SO STOKED that Spider-Verse is BACK! I honestly can't wait to learn more about how Sony Imageworks pulled this off. From a technical standpoint, it looks insane and I found myself scratching my head at how they did some of those effects. It's also hard to know when something is a 2D paint-over or a true 3D effect. What did you guys think of it?

@@jobowisheshewasnomo4171 I haven't watched Arcane yet but I am definitely familiar with the character modelling and the art style they did for it! I think they did some incredible work but for some reason it doesn't quite speak to me the way it seems to have captured the hearts and minds of a lot of people. If I give it a proper watch then yes I may be compelled to make one!

Insane art, I love how you can see the structural line work of the spot. And I love how you can see the construction lines on Miguel's face and his world, since he's from the future and the future is uncertain and can be changed, so he stays almost in Sketch/drafting form. Very cool stuff.

    • @unrulycrow6299

I would have associated these lines with The Spot being literally a WIP villain throughout the movie, while Miguel's design feels more like industrial design/concept, with sharp lines and angles, gouache for the colours, and it absolutely matches the futuristic vibe of Nueva York, being a cyberpunk dystopia with a strong orientation towards sciences (Miguel himself being a genetic engineer in the comics, and capable of figuring out dimensional travel and surveillance in the Spiderverse).

The animation choices fit and support the narrative so well that those choices appear effortless, which is a classic sign that there was actually quite a lot of effort put into it. This movie is a perfect example of why you give your artists time and pay them well.

It really breaks my heart that Disney ignored this change in animation. If you look back to 2012, disney made a short film called Paperman. It blended their CG look with their traditional 2D beautifully. It was the first form of integration even making techniques such as Meander which was used in Spiderverse. Disney chose to never use it again and kept using CG. They were once the innovators for animation but now they're years behind sony and dreamworks given that sony used to be knpen as the worst animation studio.
Walt Disney deserves to be respected

I'm sad they now seem behind, but think they did a great job with Luca and Turning Red, but Spiderman Across the Spiderverse is a much bigger creative leap for animation.
I think it was that same Paperman short and some stylistic video games like Okami, Kirby's Epic Yarn and MadWorld that made me realize they could do so much more with 3D animation. I hated how homogenized the industry was with the "Pixar" look. When Spiderman Into the Spiderman came out, it was exactly what I was thinking of.

Well said! You’ve captured everything I felt when watching it: that the movie smartly brought so many animation, art, drawing and design elements to life it felt like living 2D art but was somehow 3D. I keep telling ppl that it looked like a movie made from concept art. Congrats on the well written commentary!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video! I was so immersed in your words and narrative, I forgot the time and was surprised around 12:00 that your essay is over. The exact feeling I got at the end of Across the Spider-verse. ("Wait, it's already over two hours?") And the exact thought I had at the beginning of the film too: What? That's kinda long, I should go to the toilet and be prepared. But it didn't feel so. It felt like a breeze. You poured in so much love and appreciation for this work. You amplified my respect, happiness and pride for the all the animators in this movie. I didn't know how to properly appreciate them. And you guided me through some of the details I would never know and in place of a fan like me, really highly and appreciate the hardworking and endeavour of this gigantic team of dedicated individuals. I have heard many stories about the mistreatments of VFX artists. So, wholeheartedly I hope everyone here was well taken care of. Some quick points and sorry my comment gets so long:
    - You got me teared up around the middle-end of this video. And hearing you know/are friends with some of the animators on this incredible project, I welled up again. This movie got me emotional, you did too.
    - I love, love how you put in some stretch examples, specifically from Atlantis: The Lost Empire. It was one of the best animation from my childhood. I still think of it from time to time today. I do hope for a good live-action (ah, humanistic desire). And I really appreciate those who'd be appreciate that movie just like me. Mike Mignola's art style is also superb and super influential and memorable IMO.
    - And I love you discussed a bit on Gwen's scenes. It's just an attention-grabber from the get-go. I'm super glad Gwen's story is told in the beginning of the movie and we get to dive into her world of colours. You talked more about lines, sketches, frames and some colours. But Gwen's for me, and it's the amazing animation team too, every emotion and feeling are poured in those intricate, soft, yet clear-headed colouring (just like how Gwen is a person): purple, red, grey, etc. Even her dad's.
Again, sorry it's super long. I just want to say thank you so much again for your heart, love and will (to let people like me learn something new and wonderful).

Yes, I support all of the artists who work in this business because it is very hard work and takes lifetimes to develop the skills needed to do it. The way Spider-Punk was interesting actually, an animator on Twitter broke it down. Different parts of his model are animated at different frames like outline, jacket and cutout. He literally doesn't conform to consistency. His animation is walking contradiction.

Thank you for the art breakdown! I was thinking of writing an essay to show how the different art styles link to the story and the plot points of the movie. Watching your video was really insightful and you can tell that he artists that worked on this put their heart and soul into it! I really appreciate you talking more about the visual and technical aspect of th4e film because, I don't see people talking more about how the art direction correlates with the plot of the movie.

    • @MANIAKRA
      @MANIAKRA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the comment! You should still write your essay, I think that would be a really interesting topic to explore. I think a lot of people don't talk about the art because they don't feel comfortable enough with the process to speak on it. The best source for information now is from the artists who worked on it themselves. I've learned a lot just browsing their tweets, even learning that some of the effects I mentioned in this video are simply 2D draw-overs and not 3D effects, which was always a possibility. Still, I think there is some hidden tech in here we aren't even fully appreciating in here yet. Time will tell.

I think it's totally doable in 2D compositing but I suspect Sony is more advanced than that. My guess is it is a mix of procedural tools and compositing. Essentially at it's base it is a very crazy outline that is made to look like spray-paint, but then also can look straight edge like a paper cut out. I'll probably post a follow up video when I find out more.

I especially love the subtle but striking vibe with Miguel. There's visible sketch lines, in the manner of technical/induatrial drawings and gouache. It is insanely well fitting with a man who lives in a cyberpunk dystopia with a strong orientation towards science (Miguel himself being a genetic engineer in the comics, and capable of creating dimensional portals in the Spiderverse. My man is ✨️big brain✨️). It matches the brutalist architecture of Nueva York, and contrasts well with the softer tones of Miles's more comics/graphic style or Gwen's delicate watercolours. It also contributes to make Miguel intimidating because the man is sharp everywhere, his silhouette could be mostly recreated with almost exclusively straight lines and angles, with the occasional very slight curve for his hair.
And don't get me started on Hobie being literally made of collage and having his own animation key because of course the punk of the story will be fully out of the common rules of animation.

Great video! Just wanted to add something that i've heard/learned from other creators; around 5.30 timestamp, where you are talking about the crimson red and imperial violet notes between the frames, those are used usually (as far as i know) in concept arts or character designs for movies such as this one to literally note the colors that were used in the scene, usually the main shades of the characters/envoirement so that when continueing the work (sometimes its done by other artists) the colors does not get lost in the transition! It is literally a note for the other artists so that they know which colors to use when animating the rest of it or drawing the character/scene by themself to stay true to the original idea and concept. It is really cool that they added these elements which makes the frames raw and feel real. It really ties the aim that they were going for all together.
(Idk if this was mentioned in the comments, looked thru but didnt see anyone talking about it, alas i just wanted to share my knowledge on it. again, great video!)

    • @efethedemiurge

forgot to add; those indicators or notes are also used in architechtural drawings, i think. for the same reason. and since miguel's universe is an architechtural heaven in a way it makes sense that they added them lol (man im too lazy to look up the spelling of architecture i think i spelled it wrong two times, whatever lol)

Another essentical breakdown bro. Saw the film last night, still dizzy this morning!
But beyond the art even the film is exceptional.
The character work floored me. Example the scene with Gwen, Miles and his parents on the roof... The characterisation used to convey the tension as Gwen is trying to find a place in the conversation whilst stumbling over what reads as cultural "mind the gaps".. Not just the 1st name stuff but her awkward laughs and ungraceful miovements which WE KNOW is the complete opposite of the character when she's in her comfort zone.
And the film is littered with this story telling... I'm going again tonight!

I wonder if to achieve Spider-Punk's effect they rendered his 3D animation out and projected it onto a 2D cutout/shape in the 3D scene (kind of like what they do in games with trees and some other things) - either way it's one hell of a cool looking effect!!

Although, even just rewatching the film a ton wouldn't be able to cover all the insane things they pulled off in it! You can really tell it was a major passion project, and the team put everything they had into it
Totally agree though, his effects seem like they're a combination of every technique they came up with for the film - never seen anything like it before in a CGI movie (usually you just see it in stop motion/2D work)
