yea people always say German cars are designed to explode right when the warranty expires but that really is the case for Kia/Hyundai. I worked there for a month and I saw at least 5-6 cars around 100k with a blown motor or transmission. Whole year at BMW yet to see a ZF trans fail and only engine I've seen blow was a lube techs fault not the engines.

Currently my second which I paid 1400 is at 268k which I have done about 120k since I got it 4yrs ago. The only issues I had between the 2 is a starter, alternator and batteries, change oil every 5-7k miles using value oil. Bought the 3rd for my youngest daughter as it is a solid engine and know how long it can last. All that being said you are correct that everything after is trash.

Every bushing and ball joint in the front end was completely clapped the tow adjusters were loose brakes completly gone at both ends the oil was chunky the first few changes. About 600$ in parts and a few afternoons cussing the new Mexico heat and ford engineering i trust it just enough to make it the dogs river run car.

Even when I could barely afford to put gas in my car I bit the bullet and charged some cheap ball joints on my credit card. One bad pothole with blown ball joints and you could lose a wheel and your life.

@LiljamezZz We got it running better. It sounded a lot rougher when we got it. We got an oil change, a few new parts, and so new tires within a few years of getting it. I was told by service advisor to replaced the whole suspension and brake rotor when the mechanic round one of the knuckle during tire rotation that cost $1K for parts and labor. It took 10 minutes to brake the round knuckle and replaced it with OEM knuckle and cost $125.00 in other Asian shop!

It's hard to find an honest shop. I once took my Jeep into a local shop to replace the pilot bushing. When I got it back, the steering wheel was crooked, the vehicle pulled to the right. I also noticed thick grease on the inside of the front rims. Long story short, they messed up the alignment, they took a knife and stabbed holes in the CV boots, and they also tried to tell me that it had an antifreeze leak and a power steering leak. All of which was a lie. BEWARE of local shops. I wish The Car Wizard was local to me.

Every Honda I have had in for a valve adjustment had valve clearances that were too small. I've never had to tighten one. It's always crack the 10mm and back off the center screw about 1/2 turn. We pretty much recommend it if the vehicle is at 100k or more. I had one that was so bad, the intake valves weren't closing all the way because of the lack of clearance. Misfiring like mad. Another shop did ignition coils and fuel injectors but firing that parts cannon didn't fix it. Honda 3.5's are the worst for this in my experience.

Knowing when to say "No!" is as important a practice for a shop to follow as saying "Yes!". Swearing off fiddling with 2nd hand engines that someone else has modified or repaired recently is a good place to start. If the customer then gives you the go ahead to do whatever is necessary that's a different story. Some people have to learn the hard way. 2nd hand engines are a nightmare.

@@garrypritchard1658 They probably just checked them because they usually don't need adjusting every oil change. That was a good shop because it takes at least 1/2 hour/maybe 15 minutes if you have two people doing the job even for an experienced mechanics because you have to keep on rotating the camshaft to get the feeler gauge in to check the clearances.

The Honda engine is kind of a dinosaur and pretty unique among ‘solid lifter’ or ‘valve adjustment required’ engines in that medium is threaded adjusters. On an engine that uses variable thickness shims the procedure (and cost) for checking is very different than that of actually changing the clearance if it’s out of spec. Some variable thickness shim engines require removal of the camshafts to access the shims. So be careful when approaching the situation with your specific car. If the shop takes the valve cover off your Toyota and finds a tight valve the cost might triple.

I'm a 74yo retired Tech of 50+ years, and I owned several cars in my life but my costumers were still driving them. I, like yourself got smart and did like you did. Don't touch someone else's headache because you just unknowingly acquired another car, even if a tail light bulb burns out. It's always "it was fine before I brought it here". Some people have NO idea how difficult it is working on Cars for a living. There are so many ways a simple job can blow up in your face and most times it's not your fault. We only drove the car into the shop sometimes. I had an early 80s Civic for a simple oil change. I started the car and put it in reverse. I moved about 6 ft and the left axle broke in half. A fairly common issue on a Honda those days. Contacted the customer and he blew his cork. To make a long story short we replaced the axle for free and didn't break the bank, and told him to never return. We even showed him where the axle was almost rusted through under the rubber vibration dampener and he wouldn't even look at it. I could write a book, and maybe I will. 😁
