  • @ralphmastrangelo4818
    @ralphmastrangelo4818 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey Dave! This is a terrific technique, particularly using the mask calculator to define the Edge Mask. However, after completing the Mask Calculation in Step 4, and refining the edge mask in Step 5, I invert the layer mask in the Multi-Mask Panel and then apply it as a layer mask to the sharpened layer. This eliminates the need to paint away the halos, as the inverted layer mask does it for me! I can then modify the mask density or layer opacity to taste.

    Hi Dave, thank you for this special white edge tutorial, I have a question the background image should not have a white edge for it to work? Thank you for spending a lot of time explaining TK8

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct. You are revealing the original Background Layer (without a white edge) when you add the Edge Mask to to Sharpened Layer above it. The Layer above the Background is the Sharpened Layer with the halos. You will only be revealing the Background Layer showing thru the edge mask. If the Background Layer had a white edge this wouldn't work.

    • @TonyKuyper
      @TonyKuyper ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not quite that easy. Dave showed expanding the Edge mask using a radius of "1.5". However, that's not always the correct number. It actually depends on the width of your halo. You can use the double arrows at the top of the mask-making interface to look at the image to makes sure you've expanded the edge mask so that it fully encompasses the bothersome halo. Then, there's also the task of modifying the Lights-2 mask to give the best selection. This adjustment will vary from image to image also. These things could be programmed into an action, but you'd lose the ability to toggle back and forth between the image and the mask, which can be very helpful in making the best mask.

    Dave, I've been working on this for many hours and can't get it to work on my photos. They are TIF files. It works great on the one that you provided. What was the second layer before you applied Photo AI? Since Photo AI doesn't name layers I know that started out as something else. I've tried a copy of the background , a new layer, layer 0, locked, unlocked, etc. My edge mask looks good, it's selected yet the black paint does nothing. I have followed your steps meticulously and even zoomed in at each step to make sure my settings are the same as yours. It's probably something simple but I just can't see what is wrong. Happy holidays.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly

      The Second layer is a copy of the first layer sent into Photo Ai. I renamed the layer to Photo Ai. Are you sure you have halos on the top layer? If there are no halo's you wouldn't see a change when you painted.

      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharpening does add edge contrast so there is dark edge and a light edge. It's the light edge that sticks out like a sore thumb.

    • @donaldbernhardt
      @donaldbernhardt ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TonyKuyper
      @TonyKuyper ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way Dave did this in the video, he used black paint to conceal the light halo on the current layer, which then reveals whatever was present in the layers below. Painting black on a mask does not create a "black" halo. It just conceals the halo that is present on that layer. But it's even more precise than this. There is indeed a dark halo on all those edges that Dave painted. It's on the opposite side of the edge that was painted, but it doesn't "stick out like a sore thumb" the way the light halo does. And Dave's painting didn't touch the dark halo. It left it intact. That's because he intersected an edge mask (that encompasses both the light and dark halos) with a modified Lights-2 mask that only shows the light halos. The resulting mask, therefore, reveals light halos only and allows just the light halos to be concealed on the the layer that contains them.

      This technique is for removing halos from Sharpening your image. You need to have the original unsharpened layer under the Sharpened Layer. I added this to the Description of the video: The technique I am showing in this video is for Removing HALOS caused by SHARPENING. You would start off with an Un-Sharpened Layer and then Duplicate that layer and apply Sharpening to it. If you notice any HALOS on the Sharpened layer simply follow this technique to remove the HALOS.
      With this technique you are revealing the layer under the sharpened "HALO" layer without the HALOS. This technique only works if you have a layer beneath the HALO layer that does not have HALOS. Sorry for the confusion...
      Here is the Drop Box Link so you can try it out. It has an Un-Sharpened Layer sitting below a Sharpened Layer with HALOS: www.dropbox.com/s/4nlqv896olq8s3v/RayD-0945-Photo%20Ai%20Layer.tif?dl=0

      @@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly OK Thanks very much Dave. I took some foggy drizzle photos yesterday in the woods with my phone and the branches showed halos equal in amount to the darker branches. Is there a solution for that?

      @@srg3798 I need to think about that one. It sounds like you might need to do some cloning around those areas. Without actually seeing the image it is hard to tell without me doing some experimentation on the image. You could try selecting the branches with an Object Selection Tool and then Invert the selection and clone around the branches.This way you would protect the branches. You could put a blank pixel layer above the layer and set the Clone Stamp Tool settings to Current and Below, so you won't be cloning on the actual pixel layer. Did you shoot the image with an iPhone in ProRAW? Sometimes I notice some artifacts on my iPhone 13 Pro Max, do to the way that Apple processes the proRAW file. I think I will end up just shooting in regular RAW and skip the ProRAW in the future. When you mentioned the Halos an iPhone came to my mind.
