I disagree with a lot of the negatives you added about this game. Boss fights are definitely hard, but with practice, you can get really good at avoiding attacks and adjusting to the faster pace of this game compared to 1 and 2. I do agree that the dodge mechanic is finicky, but that isn’t the only way to avoid attacks. Also, Nemesis is certainly similar to the tyrant from 2, but that’s the point. He was meant to build upon the concept of a creature that appears at random, making you constantly paranoid. No longer can you just avoid this monster by escaping the room. Nemesis chases you relentlessly and is much quicker than 2’s tyrant. I think he’s much more intense to deal with and I dreaded fighting Nemesis far more than the T-103, who is actually quite clumsy and easy to avoid, despite how scary his appearances can still be. Yes, they both appear at random to ruin your day, and you get rewards for fighting them both. Nemesis just ups the ante. I actually think this game is on the same level of quality as 2, and I love it dearly. Nevertheless, we all have our opinions, and this was still a great video.
Thanks! I love it when people can disagree with me, but we can still find common ground. I loved RE3, and even though I complained about it, I still always have a great time with it. I wouldn't say it's on the same level as 2, but I can agree that it's an awesome game that everyone should play.
He's intense to deal with because he moves so fast and you're working on tank controls. Intensity due to a badly designed gameplay element is not the good kind of intense. It's intense because it's so frustrating to deal with him. And I am not someone who gets worked up over a video game. Nemesis isn't a good villain. He's an annoying villain.
@@xsteveconwayx Prefer Mr X over Nemesis anyways. Mr X is unique imo, Nemesis is too similar to the action packed Ustanak of RE6. A tyrant carrying weapons is ridiculous lol.
@@arnoauditore5471 Yeah that one isn't very fun so far either. The auto assist aim in that game consistently fucks me over and the camera and enemy placement is complete bullshit.
Thanks!! I wasn't saying they were identical. I was more showing that he was not as original as people give him credit for. The t103 follows you into other rooms, and was fast as hell towards the end. Nemesis definitely improved on the idea, but it wasn't a new idea.
Alejandro Marquez True but he is right they are so similar nemesis is basically Mr X 2.0 but William Birkin is something all together different and G3 would rush both of them.
Thank you for recognizing Alejandro. Only think ive really disagreed with in all of your retrospect videos. Nemesis makes mr x look like a girl. And this is only from the game. Theres other material that shows how much of a badass nemesis is. #R3MAKE!
@@fosko7443 there's a comic (i think it's a comic if i remember correctly) where birkin and nemesis fight. 3 times actually! Check it out. Also idk about that. You underestimate his agility, speed, and RPG. The thing that kills both of them instantly
This is me playing RE3 18 years ago. "I've aced RE2 so many times it's so easy now. HEY ITS THE POLICE STATION! HEY IT'S NEMESIS" YOU ARE DEAD!!!!! "what just happened"
This was me: **Nemesis pops up** ME: NOPE! **Runs through Door to next room** ME: Phew... He can't follow me through doors. I'm S- Nemesis: SURPRISE MOTHER FUCKER! **Proceeds to literally shit self**
Kenneth Eaton Yoooooooooooooooooooooo, did anyone else imagine the nemesis saying surprise mother fucker in a black dudes voice? Not Sam Jackson either, I imagined ego raptors version of Grey fox from the metal gear awesome series.
I highly disagree with you sir! Nemesis is by far one of THE MOST horrifying, badass bosses to have ever existed! He literally STALKS AND CHASES you through rooms and it’s literally the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.
That very well may be true, but I was talking about how his innovation came from another BOW. I wasn't saying he wasn't scary, I was just trying to show that he wan't as original as the internet likes to claim he is.
My favorite of the series and This is the only one that literally had my palms sweating and waking up at 4 in the morning in a cold sweat thinking I heard the nemesis voice outside my room door at 12 years old lol
The only bad thing I can really say about RE3 is that it did ruin CODE: Veronica a bit for me. After the awesome gameplay experience RE3 setup, C:V felt like a step backwards to the clunky, in comparison, style of RE2. C:V had one of the best stories in the series though, at least in the original 'Wesker gets bitch slapped' version.
Yeah the fact that RE3 and C:V were being developed at the same time really hurt the latter. I think if they spent a few more months, at least, developing C:V and using the feedback from RE3, I think C:V could've incorporated a lot of what made RE3's gameplay so good. In hindsight, it seemed to me that Capcom were just too eager at the time to take advantage of the more powerful hardware in the Dreamcast, even trying to make "Resident Evil 3" for the system, forgetting or ignoring their three series main installments deal with Sony. A similar situation could be argued for REmake and REZero, both being developed at the same time.
Valgar EXACTLY!! After playing RE3 then not having dodges, targetable items, and shitty 1 hit mechanics, it was definitely a step back for me too in CV. It’s like playing the remake of 1 then playing the original, you’re missing a lot there.
Valgar dude same played re3 first cause ive been dying to play it then and now im playing re2 and the controls through me off for a sec but its what ever each game has its own perks
Raul Rojas I don't know about mr x being garbage, i mean the fact he just slowly walks towards you made him unsettling, kind of letting you know that he'll take his time because your screwed lol
blue_hills_43r especially when RE4 feels more like a side game, Im not saying is bad but it feels nothing like the prior games when it comes to the plot
I agree. You'd be completely up a creek with no paddle if you play RE5 without having played both RE4 AND CV. That said, CV should be 4, 4 should be 5, and 5 should be 6. And that's enough confusing myself for one post. You get the gist.
I understand your points with the whole dodge mechanic, it's finicky and even boss fights it really stands out by how obnoxious as it can be. However as much as I like Resident Evil 2, I still can't get away from how much more I like Nemesis over Tyrant. While you do make a good point that they're practically the same character, Nemesis just provides a more tankish feel to him that really makes you feel a sense of dread every time you run into him. The first time you encounter him and if you manage to not get your ass handed to you he'll go down. Coming off Resident Evil 2 with Mr. X you'd suspect him to be dead at that point, but he gets back up almost immediately. Even when you're farther through the game and no longer relying on the handgun as much anymore, you still find him capable of beating your skull in. As tough as X is, by the 3rd Encounter with him you're usually armed to the teeth with magnum ammo and can down him before he gets to you. As you also said Nemesis can go through doors and chase you, but X will follow you and stop. With Nemesis it's more along the lines of area of denial because if you run from him you can't go back that way until the area you're in is cleared of the task unless you wanna get dogged by him. X would only show up in dead end areas and wouldn't chase you beyond that once you left. So ya, Nemesis just comes off more appealing to me, he still feels like a threat even near the end of the game where Tyrant stopped being a threat up around the 2nd or 3rd time until his final boss battle. Anyway, good video.
I can see that. I never really thought about the whole "him blocking you from going back" thing. That's a fair point. I think I was a little pissed at how many times I died during the acid fight with nemesis, when I wrote this script. HA
I agree! I love Mr. X as a character, he's an absolute beast but in game he was never a real challenge until the final boss fight. Most of the time I just squeeze by him and exit the room, problem solved. The only time I couldn't get past him was on the 3rd floor Balcony, but it only took a couple grenade round to put him down. Nemesis on the other hand really tests your video game reflexes and skills, dodging, running, shooting, and not to mention he follows u room to room so u never have a moment to breath. He's just a lot more relentless and terrifying to deal with. Every time I hear "Feel the Tense" music kicks in I get dem goosebumps, hands get all sweaty, heart starts pounding, and when you finally hear that dreadful "Staaaars" he's already on top of you. I always saw Nemesis as Mr. X done better.
Don't forget that it's way easier to get rid of Mr. X by just going through a door. Nemesis don't give a damn about that - you gotta put a ton of screens between you and him to get him off you. Plus that whole busting down doors thing that Nemesis does makes the game combine areas that normally are loaded separately, and that was a huge, mind-bending shocker at the time. Never seen anything like that. Don't bring up that one spot where Mr. X breaks down a wall between. It's ONE spot where he does that, and he does it no matter what. And you can still ditch him by turning around, leaving the room you're in, and coming back. I'm talking about how Nemesis will dynamically do this in response to your behavior. Plus Mr. X's wall break doesn't combine the two rooms.
Love the nemesis comparison with mr.x ,but about the dodge mechanic, pressing aim button while monster attacks you will result in dodge move, but also if you press action button while aiming you will perform dodge move -pressing x while holding r1. It says si in the ingame manual, maybe you just missed it :) btw love your retrospective
+Azriel PSX thanks! Yeah, I should have been more clear about that. The manuals are in your inventory, but I didn't think anyone was likely to read them. That does clear some things up though. Thanks for pointing that out.
Azriel PSX You have to do it during the weapon aiming animation. So, not when the gun is completely holstered, but between the time when it is not and is. What makes this interesting is that since every weapon has a different animation speed and such, it makes it harder to master.
Avalanche Reviews Lol I used to love to read everything there was to read in videogames thats how I learn about the mechanics of this game, nowdays rarely do that maybe thats why I end up sucking while playing the witcher 2 😂
This is my top favorite RE of all time, the streets are more fun than the RPD, maybe it’s because when i played it as a child, it was my first RE, and i fell in love with it.
By far my favorite of the classic REs. Love the level designs and the multiple choice and random item placement and puzzle solutions. Nemesis is such a cool villain, and I love the supporting cast of the umbrella mercenaries. REALLY hope they make a REmake of this, would be absolutely amazing.
About the dodge mechanic, it actually is just really a hard mechanic and you can sometimes alter the dodge direction that depends on (in my opinion) a player triggered dodge or an automatic dodge. Yes I just typed automatic dodge and I've played the game so many times and watched pro streams on RE3 to boldly say this game has a autododge. It was nice that you said what you said about RE3's dodge but I have to counter it by just saying you can't handle the mechanic if you say it doesn't work. Even the game says it's an "emergency dodge" and if we suck on the word emergency you'd think that it's a desperate try to get out of a bad spot. But this is just my opinion, love these series keep doing this!
just why defend bad game-design and bad input recognition ?? It's one thing to be a fan of a game, even a fanboy, but it's clear the dodge is not a reliable mecanic. (and the 3 Remake make it just worse... now it works too much, with a perfect frame "bullet time dodge" or a big punch if you play Carlos...)
@@JoPeTuYaTroJoueY the best thing about the mechanic is something you point out in your comment: uncertainty that is going to work every time. In the remake, not only does the dodge work every time but its overpowered as hell and breaks the game. In a horror game, its better to have mechanics that DON'T work every time you want them to then a mechanic that actively TAKES AWAY the fear like in RE3Make.
Amazing taste in regards to RE music. City of Ruin is one of my top 5 RE music tracks. RE1: Where's Wesker RE1: Aqua Ring Basement RE2: Nothing More To Do Here RE3: City of Ruin RE:CV: The Suspended Doll Some of the best video game music I've ever heard!
Dude this was your best review yet! You even brought in a great graphics comparison through SCART and everything. You went into great detail and made some great points. I love the 17 minute run time also. Keep up the great work!
I think I can boil down why Nemesis is praised despite the existence of Mr. X in RE2 into a few reasons. Prepare for a wall of text though, but just hear me out: 1. Nemesis immediately starts out with a much more imposing and threatening look, and the first thing you see him do is kill one of the characters you were introduced to in RE1 pretty early in this game, and in a very horrifying way too. Mr. X is covered by a trenchcoat most of the time, and you only see what Mr. X can do before the confrontation where he gets thrown over and the final battle if you let him kill you, and let's be real, he never killed me, not once, even after his transformation. 2. Speaking of Mr. X not killing me, Nemesis is a much more difficult boss monster, even in just avoiding him (because in some instances he has a GOD DAMN ROCKET LAUNCHER), and I know you've expressed your disdain for the dodge mechanic, and while I'm no fan of it either, I still think that Nemesis being more imposing and a real threat in this game isn't the worst thing in the world. Plus, if you play it as much as I have, then you get used to playing it and doing fine even without being too good at dodging. Not to say you don't have RE cred of course, as you demonstrated, but I feel like you haven't played RE3 as much. Also, a bit random, but when it comes to getting used to playing this game, I cannot praise the 180 degree turn in this game enough. It is one of the best additions to the series, seriously. 3. The problem with Mr. X is if you've played through Scenario B once, you've played through it 100 times. Mr. X always shows up at the exact same scripted points with absolutely no variance, and the pattern becomes so painfully recognizable that he loses any sense of danger. On the other hand, while Nemesis has scripted appearances, he also has points when he changes up when and where he appears, and while sometimes this is based on the decisions the player makes/the order of locations they go to, sometimes he's just a dick and shows up when and where you least expect it, and because of that, even after you've played it through a few times you're still never quite certain of where you are and aren't safe except for a few select locations he'll never appear at, and even then he'll follow you into just about every place that isn't a safe room until the game decides he's done chasing you for the time being and the tension music disappears. 4. Lastly, once again making a smooth subject transition regarding the music, that is undoubtedly part of what makes Nemesis so memorable and terrifying. I had to look up Mr. X's theme for whenever he appears and listen to the first few seconds to remember how it went. But with Nemesis? I could never forget his theme, or at the very least the first one that plays every time he appears in the first half of the game before the Clock Tower fight, and I know I'm not alone in this. There's also the track "Feel The Tense" that plays that lets you know that he could be about to show up, and while you'd think telegraphing his potential appearance should take away from his surprise appearances, it really does make things more 'tense' instead, and totally unnerves you, wondering when he'll show up, if he does show up at all. It's this element of randomness and being constantly unnerved by just the thought of his appearance that really makes him stand out. As you can probably tell, I've played RE3 a lot, and though it's not my favorite title in the series and not even my most frequently played (that would probably go to REmake and then RE2, and I'm still not sure if it's RE3 right behind 2 or not in terms of favorites, can't make up my mind), there are a lot of little things that you really make the game memorable and a great experience in its own right, and you really notice them the more you play the game, which is encouraged for all the branching decisions that give some serious replay value to it.
No, I totally get his popularity, and I agree with everything you just said. I was trying to point out that he was not as innovative as most people say. He was a very successful rebranding of a cool concept. All the improvements are killer and he's definitely an icon, hes just not a brand new idea.
Avalanche Reviews With this mindset tho, is anything in any video game new? We all just feel you have a vendetta against 3. Nemesis no doubt, as you have admitted, is one of the series most iconic Boss’s. Nothing has been around like it (with Lisa Trevor being the exception but not nearly as scary or “new”) . I dont understand how you can say 2 blatant contradictions in the same breath.
@@djfxonitg there is A TON of way to create a fun and visceral game design Boss. So no, his mindset is ON POINT. NEmesis is Mister X buffed to the max, that's it. It's not a betrayal of the franchise to say that goddam !!
Definitely my favourite of the classic RE games. It was awesome to see Jill return and Nemesis is a terrifying boss!!! I also think the voice acting is SO much better in this game!
This was my favorite game! Loved the nemesis! This was the one game where i had to make sure to stock up/save my ammo and herbs! Because i def would need them!
I genuinely loved this game, when I played it I actually never felt safe. This was probably due to the fact that you are traveling the streets of raccoon city. I felt like there was a monster around every corner!
Absolutely great content! Although I have to admit that, being a diehard fan of RE3, I'm always a bit skeptical about any kind of criticism directed towards it. Of course, I know for a fact that the game is not perfect, even if the fanboy inside me doesn't want to accept that. Anyhow, your criticism is completely fair and it's always nice to hear other people's well-formulated opinions that may be different from mine so as to form a more comprehensive view of the game. Keep up the amazing work!
That is a rare thing to hear. I take a similar position to the whole of the RE games. I love them with all my heart, but soemone doesn't like them, I can see why. Many thanks!!!
My favorite version of the original version of this game is the Gamecube. However, it does come with some caveats. 1) You have to have a GC Video HDMI adapter (and thus it only works on a DOL-001 with the digital out port). 2) You also have to have an SD Media Launcher, or some other method of loading Swiss, because the game does not support 480p (only 480i), but you can force it to 480p with Swiss. If you can do both of these things then the Gamecube has the best looking version. But 480i, even with a good line doubler (like the GC Video adapters do), looks like total ass on a modern display, so even if you have one of those Swiss is still a must.
RE3 has always been a strange animal: it's probably the one I played the most along with RE2 (there was a ton of stuff to unlock!), but it didn't add anything to the main narrative. It was more of an upgraded version of stuff we had already seen in RE1 and RE2. While Nemesis was essentially Mr. X on steroids, I still prefer him over the latter: its ghoulish appearance was more fit for the RE universe and it was more unnerving that the T-103 imho. As a game, RE3 is undeaniably very compelling to this day.Talking about storyline, was there actually a true, main narrative to the RE series? Looking back at it, I think the sad truth is that they never really had a plan for it and whenever they tried to tie some loose end, the result was always unsatisfactory (I am replaying Code: Veronica for the first time in 10 years on my old PS2: despite it being the last great RE game, there's stuff that still make me cringe: Chris and Claire's reunion, for example, feels very weak).
That's definitely true. It does seem like they were making up the whole story, as they went. I really love 3, despite the downsides I mentioned. I play through it like once a year or so.
RE3 is my most vivid Resident Evil childhood memory just because Nemesis was so hard to fight, broken controls and all. Even if you thought you knew what you were doing he would still show up somewhere random at totally rape you, it was part of the charm. So basically you were trying to solve puzzles running back and forth... running low on ammo... slowly figuring out that there really isn't anywhere to hide... and that Nemesis will most likely swat you like a fly in close combat... and then you hear it... STAAAAARRRRSS... arrhhggg! Run! Like I said.. memorable.
As I recall, 3 was considered the best game until 4 came out. Even then, many still considered it the best. I've heard it from many online and in person over the years. 1, 3, 4, Code Veronica and 0 are the ones I've played (finishing 1, 3 and 4, most of Veronica). I played 5 for less than an hour and didn't like it - and none of the rest. 3 is still my fav, although it's probably harder to play now than it was in 2000-2001.
RE3 was the best sequal to RE of them all, way better than RE2. It had everything. This is how RE2 should have been. Sadly it was the last really noticable sequal. I cant really rely to all of your criticism in the video. The boss fights are not very difficult imo. And yeah you can get hit in a tight space when you try to dodge, but I bet you can in real life too ^^ If you like RE1 you must play RE3. More than RE2.
CV was in development before RE3, and and neither were in development before part 2, so I don't think that's right. As for the difficulty, keep in mind that the DC version defaults to Japanese hard mode. Normal mode outside of Japan, was equivalent to Japanese easy mode.
Nemesis IS ridiculously hard to fight with those controls. Had the dodge mechanic been better realised. Also the story and environments aren't as memorable as 2. 3 is more satisfying to play tho since you have more ammo and is also more action-oriented than previous entries so if that is what people are looking for than I completely get why they would like it more than the other games
I was going to ask this question, but decided to look in the RE3 video comments first. For whatever reason my 90s horror experience consisted of Dino Crisis w/ RE3 Demo Disk (ends when Nemesis Kool-Aid-Mans at the Police Station).
J C Exactly have a game that takes place at the same time as RE2 and 3 and even cut to parts closer to the beginning like Outbrake. So many opportunities to scare the shit out of people. Imo RE2 remake has the greatest zombies ever to be in a game so just add more variety of looks some fresh some really messed up have a fantastic mix of the open outdoor parts and the classic indoor hallways and dark rooms. You could even have a Mr X in it. Think about it umbrella had six of them dropped one in the RPD hence RE2 and the other five were dropped in the middle of the city for combat testing. So any one of them could get involved in perusing the player. The main character should be someone new anyway I should stop or I will be at this all day.
Even though I do like RE Nemesis a lot, it doesn’t deserve to have number 3 in its title. It felt more like a DLC rather than an actual sequel to RE2, Code Veronica is the REAL RE3 for me. Resident Evil 3 - Code Veronica, that’s what it should have been called.
The dreamcast port was the one I had back in the day. It was actually my first RE game as a hand-me-down. Even though I was more of a wimp back then when it came to horror games, for some reason, I loved playing RE3. I just kept going back to it. It even helped me get over my fear of spiders as I thought they were more annoying than scary in game.
I agree with most of your criticisms (although I didn't take as much issue with dodge mechanic, thinking of it more as a luck-based 'desperation move' as opposed to a core gameplay technique). Interestingly, though, because of its streamlined, quick-paced feel as opposed to the labrinthy back-tracking of the first 2, this is the one I'm most likely to just pick up and play through for a fun time, whereas 1 + 2 are like large portion meals you have to be in the mood for.
I can understand that. I actually enjoy the backtracking of the first two, and the few parts where it's required for 3, are the parts I like the most. I think you're right about the dodge mechanic too, but since I played this on the highest difficulty, I ended up having to rely on it a little too much.
@@AvalancheReviews Hey dude, A. I doubt you’ll see this, and B. I know you’re a busy guy in general, but I’m just curious…Now that RE3Make has been out for a while, to a seemingly largely mixed reception (Although you were definitely gentler on it than a large portion of the in-my-opinion illogically enraged populous, I feel similarly), did playing through that have any significant effect on your thoughts/feelings/opinions on the original RE3??
Having started with RE1, and playing them all in order. RE3 is my favorite of the entire series. So while I find it hard to agree with most of the points you present in this video, I do appreciate and enjoy your retrospective as a whole. Keep up the good work!
Good video. However... I think RE3 was ahead of its time in many ways.. You mention the soundtrack and Nemesis has to have had one of the most tense I remember, never knowing when Nemesis was going to come crashing through a door made the game really scary! And the sound design made that happen! Also silly little improvements like 'stairs' you can now walk up and down without an animation to do it for you, something later games 'code: Veronica' would go back to! Anyways it was a great game and a good retrospective!
Thanks! I completely agree. 3 was an amazing game. I hope it didn't come across like I didn't like it. The soundtrack was super good, but I was more of a fan of the dreary, atmospheric tracks. Actually, CV didn't go back to the stairs having to be climbed, it was in development before Nemesis, and meant to be the official 3rd game. There's a good amount of info on the subject in my video on Code Veronica.
It might of been if you could explore more of the police station. Spending hours roaming the halls as if you were back in the mansion is something that made 2 better than the rest.
I just want to to add that this was my first resident evil nd up until this day is still in my top list along with others master pieces such as 4 nd re-mastered nd so on this one was just such an amazing ride...nemesis chasing nd ur heart racing to make those decisions i could go on mixing forever like the gun powder :) nd by the way sit i always enjoy ur content.
This is such an excellent video, I really feel like trying this out after playing RE 3 remake. I remember first going to a friend's place years ago who was much elder than me and seeing him play this. I have been so curious about this game since then and have always wanted to try it out, because my friend never let me try it, as I was way too young for it.
Binge watching RE videos in anticipation for the RE 2 remake. Longest 6 months ever ahead! Love your retrospective series. Great work. Rated and subbed 😊
look how many idiots in the comments saying that Resident Evil 3 was focused on action, there was no focus on action at all, but the settings of the game (The ruined streets of Raccoon City) necessitated more enemies and more enemies required more ammo, and having the Nemesis on top of this with his fast movement required giving the character some abilities to balance things up. That's the whole story. There was no intention to make the game lean towards action, if they wanted to do that they would have completely changed the controls and made it fit the action, but they didn't.
I agree with you on the boss battles. A lot of the time you have to have some luck against the first two Nemesis battles. First being that you are able to get some of the dodges to land. Second is hope you got the magnum as the random in the STARS office. All in all, I love this game but I can understand the flaws. My question is about the Dino Crisis series. Can you do a retrospective on that series? I loved the first two games and of course could not stand 3 lol. Love the work you do! Keep it up!
Not really. All you do is have to learn the maximum distance you can get away from him without him starting to run and just go circle around his right side. Not much luck needed.
causerDAguv I never said he wasn't easy. I can beat him but i wasn't able to get the dodging to work on spot every time. After the first 2 police station battles he was never an issue anymore, except court yard battle could be frustrating but not impossible.
Just my opinion, but I always found the grenade launcher to be the better of the two. It just always seemed to be more flexible and was one of the better ways (if not the best) to invest gunpowder. Freeze rounds were insane against nemesis. The magnum was better at raw damage, but in terms of efficiency and ammo availability the grenade launcher always came out ahead.
Echnew no doubt on the freeze rounds, but you couldn't get them in police station that early. I was talking for that one fight after you leave the STARS office.
I definitely understand your opinion of the game, with exception of how you brushed aside Nemesis himself. The reason Nemesis gets so much attention as the big “new” concept in the game is because of how much Nemesis has evolved from Mr. X, so much so that it creates a different feel in game compared to the 2nd game. While Mr. X was after you, and was intimidating, he was slow and only confined to a single room. If you escaped from the room he was in, you were safe, that was it. Compare that to Nemesis, who sprints towards you constantly, can attack from a distance at times, and biggest of all, can actually chase you from room to room unless you can successfully get far enough away from his general area. It went from just being the frightful encounter Mr. X provided to a literal game of cat and mouse, a game that was essentially one giant, extended chase scene. That is what makes Nemesis a new addition, despite Mr. X being done first. This being a retrospective, it does kind of disappoint me that you neglected to mention the whole concept of being actually chased in this game. Of course, this is my favorite game in the series at the moment (I’ve only played the first 3), so that’s why I’m kinda making a big deal about this.
As a speedrunner, I'm disappointed in your ability to fight the bosses and generally be good at the game, but as a fan, I'm proud of your videos and love them regardless.
the character models on RE3 have actual Mesh Skinning, unlike RE and RE2... you can look at it on your comparison screen at 11:31 Jill limbs are smoothly attatched to each other, unlike Claire's limbs disconnected and just intersecting
I love this game, but I agree about the quick dodge feature. It is a useful mechanic if you master it correctly, but it is cumbersome to use it. Sometimes it doesn't even work properly. And boss battles could have been executed better, because Nemesis has a stupidly ridiculous attack range that you just can't possibly avoid, and avoiding his attacks feels like a chore with tank controls and in tight claustrophobic spaces. This game desperately needs a remake treatment (probably even more than RE2), ditch the tank controls and implement a quick dodge mechanic as its own separate button (the one similar in REvelations 2, probably not the best choice for an example, but sure as hell beat the clunky mess of an original quick dodge). I hope Capcom will get back to drawing board after they finish with REmake2 and work on REmake3.
Idk the only area that makes it hard to dodge (not the move. I mean manually dodging) him is the corridor where you get the battery from the statue. Every other area has plenty of room to dodge him. He is very simple. Dodge around his right side and make sure to stay close enough to where he doesn't start running but far enough away to be able to attack without him hitting you.
In the lore, both the Nemesis T-Type and the T-103 were meant for mass production. Now, obviously, only the T-103 made it to production, seeing as how there are actually quite a few throughout 2 and 3. The T-103 purpose was to be "used as bodyguards (Ivans in the Chronicles games); assassins sent to hunt specific individuals (T-00 AKA Mr. X); Umbrella agents sent to acquire important objects (T-00 again), and hard-muscle for tackling armed opposition (the many dead T-103s)." (Resident Evil Wiki, except for the parenthesis). Most likely, the Nemesis T-Types would've been used as brutish killers, and would be sent in on missions that required a high body count. Basically, the T-103 would be the bodyguard for the leader of a nation, and the Nemesis T-Type would be the sole destroyer of the nation's military bases. Apparently, the T-103 was also meant for covert missions, this is why the Remake has him shorter, with a more traditional trench coat, and wearing a fedora to hide his features. Concept art actually shows him looking even more human, with no wrinkles on his face, wearing simple gloves, and simple boots, along with the coat and fedora. Their designs (especially the Remake for T-103s) work great for their purpose.
I get a pretty even 50/50 split of people who agree it was random as hell, and people who say they can dodge every time without issue. I just can't believe that though.
I can't wait for the remake of Nemesis. 2 just came out but Capcom have pretty much outright said that they are already working on a Resi 3 remake. They said it'll drop before Resi 8. Maybe theres hope for a Code Veronica remake too since it's technically the last game from the old era of Resident Evil game.
I know it's 4 years later so it's questionable whether or not you'll see this, but I know exactly what you mean with this one. I recently played through the classic trilogy (and code veronica) and the difficulty in this is so much higher. I went from dying once in the first game (and that was more down to dumb carelessness than anything else) and not at all in the second to dying countless times in 3. That dodge move is utterly useless! Given how hard the enemies can hit, especially Nemesis, it's not worth even trying to pull it off. On top of that, in spite of the fact that I kicked ol' Nemmy up and down the place, claiming two bonus weapons in the process (and dying a bunch, but that's expected) I still got a lousy E rating at the end! That's just...mean! Lol. But then I did save a ton, so there's that. I think the major difference between Nemesis and T103 is his speed and ferocity. Nemesis moves like he belongs in a different game. T103 is a slow moving tank, whereas Nemesis is so much quicker than you and he throws you about in a way you really have no answer for. Every time he shows up, you feel massively unprepared and you dread his next appearance. I never really got that with T103. He's just a little too easy to knock down. If you choose to fight Nemesis, you know that if you survive, you'll likely have very little ammo/health left afterwards and, especially on a first playthrough, you have no idea when he's going to show up again. I get the feeling this is what they were trying to achieve with T103, but it just never had the same effect. Still, Resident Evil 2 is probably my favourite of the bunch, even all these years later.
I've binge watched almost the whole retrospective series the past couple of days and man.. hats off, thank you for the amazing work. I'm not nearly as well-versed as you are on the canon of the triology but since re2 and re3 take place in parallel, and tyrants were the most advanced B.O.W's and were used to track survivors in Raccoon city, it make sense that Umbrella sent its most advanced and capable tyrant to track the main threat to them, S.T.A.R.S members. this gives a sense of connection between the two storylines, at least for me. I would also say I never cared about my final score in RE games, that makes me appreciated that the better tyrant is much harder to fight, also the feeling of helplessness that his unavoidable attacks give helps with what I love about the triology, the "very normal desparate human that could be overwhelmed and killed by a far superior force" factor to be percise.
Very well done . RE3 was the best among others... Cutscenes , soundtracks...above all is memorable raccoon city . My favorite soundtracks are the city of ruin , meeting brad , free from fear and Her Determination .
It's so satisfying to see a channel dedicated to (in my personal opinion) the best series of games ever made. Great work brotha, keep the reviews coming although I do feel you were abit harsh on RE3. For me it's up there with 2 because they made Nemisis tough and the fact he appears at random stages brings in more of a scare factor compared to 2. Of course Leon and Claire will also have the best storyline and play through, but personally I felt 3 was more enhanced and they kept to Racoon City which made it more exciting to relive the horror all over again!
As far as i know, the RE3 dodge works by holding R1 + X, which means that doesn't matter if you were holding the aiming for several seconds, it's bound to the same commands you use for shooting, so what's happening,is that you are trying to shoot at the enemy, and the game thinks you want to dodge. It's just bad game design.
Left4Coragem To be fair, you shouldn't be trying to shoot an enemy right on top of you. You should wait for an attack, dodge, then run away and get distance. I think firing away point blank is where 99% of the unintended dodges come from. Idk, I definitely got better with it and ended up wishing it was in the other games.
But that's how you get headshots in the old resident evils, also, if i have a shotgun in hands, why would want to dodge instead of just shooting? By shooting i can push the enemy away AND deal damage. Also, it's not like there was no more button combinations to use on the PS1 controller, they could easily have made the system so that you could dodge an enemy if you pressed R1+Triangle just before being hit. Another problem the system they used have, is that you can dodge and still take the hit, because you don't choose to where you are going to dodge and RE being filled with tight corridors, made so your character could try to dodge left or right, but since you're in a corridor, he just dodge on a wall, stays in place and takes the hit. The system could have been a lot more reliable using another button and being able to choose the direction of the dodge.
Left4Coragem I know. Believe me, I had the same problems as you and everyone else because I was so used to playing RE a certain way. But trust me, that mechanic isn't nearly as broken as it's made out to be. Yeah, if you're pinned in a corner you're usually shit out of luck against stronger enemies. But if you have the mindset of never shooting when an enemy is closing in and instead wait to dodge its attack and run (not shoot immediately after, you'll get screwed doing that too), you'll be fine. It's not intuitive whatsoever but it does work well if you figure it out.
Honestly this is my first resident evil game. I'd watched my cousin at the time play the 2nd one but the cinematic in the beginning hyped me up, to play. Haha never forget it
I'll have to respectfully disagree on the boss fights. I felt that they were intense, and offered just enough of a challenge that they felt very rewarding when you came out on top. Mr. X and Nemesis look similar but still felt different to me. Nemesis just seemed relentless, a being with a singular goal of hunting down S.T.A.R.S. members and brutally murdering them. Nemesis was more intimidating to me in the fact that he was so dead set on that goal. Mr. X felt more faceless to me, definitely scary, and intimidating, and while he definitely got the blood pumping, Nemesis had me terrified to go around any corner. When Nemesis broke through that wall at the RPD as I had just came down the stairs... That about made me piss my pants. I don't think they're the same at all, other than the fact they both stalk the player, Nemesis was a whole helluva lot more persistent. Killing him off finally to end the game was like a weight off of my shoulders. I grew up on these games, and while RE2 will always be near and dear to my heart I think I've got to give Nemesis the nod as my favorite Resident Evil game just ahead of the REmake, and RE2. Great video though, games are so subjective, just my own honest opinion. I agree with just about everything else you said though.
To be fair, I probably should have mentioned that the DC version uses the Japanese hard mode, as normal mode, so I was fighting the bosses on the hardest difficulty. I can see where you're coming from with Nemesis, but on hard mode, he's so dangerous, that I end up having to reset it he even touched me. It made him so annoying.
I must admit I've never played the DC port so I can definitely understand your frustration then if the Hard Mode difficulty is ramped up even worse. I watch some of these guys on youtube playing running around and knifing everything and dodging attacks making it look easy... Definitely not as easy as they make it look!
I have to say RE3 may be my favorite of the PS1 trilogy, and can't quite pin down why I just like it the most. One thing I will stay even to this day I am still amazed at the prerendered cutsense at the end with the end of Raccoon City, that is still impressive in my books.
RE3 was my favourite out of the original 3. I really disliked RE2 for no quick turn, no auto aim, and having to press a button to walk up stairs. Just moving around was such a chore that it didn't feel fun especially when you can get swarmed by an army of zombies the moment you go through a door. RE3 just hit the sweet spot between horror and action, and Nemi is super fun to fight compared to Mr.X
I couldn't desagree more, T103 and Nemesis are in no way comparables, the threat in it self its more than obvious, the differences are just not Nemesis saying "S.T.A.R.S.", he chases you to death and can kill you in a blink if you are not careful, the same can't be said for T103 that just walks in a very slow fashion and punch you only if you are close enough plus he appears just like three times in the whole run ,the only time that Mr. X feels like a real threat it's right at the very end of Scenario B when he transforms
That's true, but Mr X shows up in tight corridors, making dodging impossible, and he hits relatively hard. I think making Nemesis able to run, was a mistake. There's nothing worse than having a good run, and hearing Nemesis show up and knowing he's may get a lucky hit in. Now keep in mind, I play this game on hard mode, so one passing hit from Nemesis, is no small issue.
Jarrett i just realized...you don't have any "snatcher" content on the channel, are you gonna make a let's play or review? dope review btw be on the lookout for the next.
I have really been meaning to do a video on it. I will one of these days, I swear! I've always had some kind of child like hope that I would have a legit copy of it, but I think we both know that's never going to happen. I don't feel like selling an organ just to get it, but I will do a video (possibly two) on it, be sure of that.
I literally remember when this game came out!!!! I was at my friends house in his room reading video game magazines and I remember seeing a picture of Jill and thinking she looked hot and my friend agreeing. Remember walking home and asking my mom to get the game but she said I was too young, pissed me off. crazy how I remember the day and everything
Avalanche Reviews
Agreed. Can’t wait for you to get to the other games! I want to see your thoughts on 0. I think it’s good but quite flawed.
@@tigga2300 That doesn't even follow. RE6 came far after RE3 so Ustanak is too similar to nemesis by that logic.

Yeah that one isn't very fun so far either. The auto assist aim in that game consistently fucks me over and the camera and enemy placement is complete bullshit.
Nemesis can follow you into other rooms, actually runs and has his ranged launcher attack. Your analysis on him was too simplified. Good video though.

Avalanche Reviews keep up the great work I am a new subscriber
The only bad thing I can really say about RE3 is that it did ruin CODE: Veronica a bit for me. After the awesome gameplay experience RE3 setup, C:V felt like a step backwards to the clunky, in comparison, style of RE2. C:V had one of the best stories in the series though, at least in the original 'Wesker gets bitch slapped' version.
I will give you that. The controls handled so much more smoothly in 3, compared to CV.
I can see that a little. The voice acting also took a downward turn in CV.
I'd choose Nemesis over Mr. X any day.
+Nevets2891 I think most people in this comment section, agree with you.
Nemesis is iconic, Scary, treating, powerfull....Mr X is....just Garbage not even scary.
Raul Rojas I don't know about mr x being garbage, i mean the fact he just slowly walks towards you made him unsettling, kind of letting you know that he'll take his time because your screwed lol
160sharp Mr X was scary but Nemesis moves as fast as X final form and it has better reach wich makes him terrifying
Nemesis was scary because he's too strong. You've to think twice before fighting him
Many of my friends didn't even know that Code Veronica is a main game in the series and skipped it. Why didn't they make CV RE4?
I ask myself that same question all the time.
blue_hills_43r especially when RE4 feels more like a side game, Im not saying is bad but it feels nothing like the prior games when it comes to the plot
I agree. You'd be completely up a creek with no paddle if you play RE5 without having played both RE4 AND CV. That said, CV should be 4, 4 should be 5, and 5 should be 6. And that's enough confusing myself for one post. You get the gist.
Dreamcast exclusivity played a huge role in that.
Re4 is the best imo
Nemesis DOES what Code Veronica DON'T

I wonder how much of the praise for Nemesis comes from people not realizing Mr. X was in the B Campaign for RE2.
I'd say a good number.
Thanks man!! I will 100% admit that I am not good at triggering that dodge. This is definitely the opinion of a novice.
Use the shoot button to dodge instead of the aim button. You're welcome.
just why defend bad game-design and bad input recognition ??

I think I can boil down why Nemesis is praised despite the existence of Mr. X in RE2 into a few reasons. Prepare for a wall of text though, but just hear me out:
X's got that very creepy Organ playing when you first encounter him.
Yeah, 3 definitely had a hardcore difficulty.
I love this one as well!
trying to kill nemesis with only a knife!
the water puzzle
Jill!
and the usual end game explosion!
:D
Resident evil 3 1999 is the greatest resident evil game of all time
I genuinely loved this game, when I played it I actually never felt safe. This was probably due to the fact that you are traveling the streets of raccoon city. I felt like there was a monster around every corner!
You really nailed everything I felt about my recent RE3 playthrough perfectly. God Nemmy is so frustrating in that acid room.
STAAAAARRRRSS... arrhhggg! Run! Like I said.. memorable.
OH NO YOU DI'NT !!!
See my name ?
It's been like that for 12 years
RE3 IS .THE . BEST. RE GAME .EVER!
HA! Best reaction ever. I do want to point out that I love RE3 though.
O yeah sir it is the best e
Res game ever.! This guy is just a to hard fan boy of the second res.
"I know what you're thinking" is in every RE video that you've done.
Damn! You're retrospective is great stuff!
Thanks man! I put a lot of work into it
And it shows!
YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE YOU'RE
Yeah, you're right. I confused things there. I realized earlier but couldnt find my comment anymore.
I share your view on this. Not super keen in 2, love 3.
How to learn the dodge: try beating nemesis in his first 2 encounters with only a knife. Even if u don't. Ull get really fucking good at it.
Can you do a retrospective on the Dino crisis series of please?
I am planning on doing that. Not sure when, but it's definitely on the list.
I was going to ask this question, but decided to look in the RE3 video comments first. For whatever reason my 90s horror experience consisted of Dino Crisis w/ RE3 Demo Disk (ends when Nemesis Kool-Aid-Mans at the Police Station).
He dodged next to the wall and then complaint that the dodge doesn't work! This discredits everything he said in this video
I loved Raccoon City as an environment, there are so many stories to be told, and I hope Capcom sets more games there, given REmake 2's success.
The main character should be someone new anyway I should stop or I will be at this all day.
i come from the futur, and well... they didn't. The town is so under-utilised in the remake... it's pitiful.
RE 3: Nemesis is actually my favorite entry in the franchise, lol.
Looks like we agree.
Thank you! I still love 3, I just have some complaints with it. It's still an awesome game.
Good video.
The best resident evil, only held back by graphical and hardware limitations. Unfortunately wasn’t given the same treatment as REmake
Hold on Imma let u finish.. but resident evil 3 was the best RE game Ever!!!
Eh
It might of been if you could explore more of the police station. Spending hours roaming the halls as if you were back in the mansion is something that made 2 better than the rest.
It’s not even in the top 5
This is actually my favorite ps 1 RE game. I just loved the fluid movement with the quick turns and the variety in ammo and weapons.
I totally agree on the dodging mechanic. It is a wonky mess and I usually just ignore it.
SlyBeast th-cam.com/video/mdJoPZcsZ4s/w-d-xo.html
It definitely can be a wonky mess, but I've seen it used expertly by others. Just not by myself lol
Oh I don't doubt it and it's very entertaining to watch someone that has mastered i but for my money, it's not implemented very well.
Nemesis does a good job of making you pissed at him. Like he’s your nemesis.
Ha! Thanks a lot!
Subbed, loving the content bro! I have similar tastes in video games so your vids have been really enjoyable.
Good to hear! Always glad to meet someone who shares my weird ass tastes in games
Binge watching RE videos in anticipation for the RE 2 remake. Longest 6 months ever ahead! Love your retrospective series. Great work. Rated and subbed 😊
RE3 is still my favorite RE game right next Code Veronica X for ps2
It's a killer game, that's for sure
look how many idiots in the comments saying that Resident Evil 3 was focused on action, there was no focus on action at all, but the settings of the game (The ruined streets of Raccoon City) necessitated more enemies and more enemies required more ammo, and having the Nemesis on top of this with his fast movement required giving the character some abilities to balance things up.
You don't need luck at all. Nemiesis is quite easy if you know what to do.
causerDAguv I never said he wasn't easy.
The first time I experienced a Resident Evil game was when playing Nemesis. Great video. :)
Man, that must have been weird, coming into the series on such an odd offshoot.
I've played 3,4, and 5. That's it. I've still yet to experience the others. :)
+Yellowswift3 Man, you are missing out!
I'm sure I'll get around to trying them out, or the HD remakes. Looking forward to more in the series. Great job. :)
Thinking that survival horror games require tank controls is a really bad take.
I really hope that like your video on 1.5, you do a video on the hooked man version of Resident Evil 4, as well as the fanmade code madman.
Totally agree with the dodge button. I could only ever do it by accident.
I get a pretty even 50/50 split of people who agree it was random as hell, and people who say they can dodge every time without issue. I just can't believe that though.
I just assumed Jill was doing it automatically as I was playing on Easy! Had no idea there was a button until I looked in the manual.
Woohoo! Im playin this RN and Im enjoyin it. Nemesis got nothin on my Magnum! :D
I had to replay the RPD area twice, because the rng kept putting the grenade launcher in the locker.
i didnt actually know you could get that there. :D
i also have the launcher now. Cant remember where I got it.
There's a random chance it could spawn in the stars room, but you can get it later, if it doesn't. Speed runners hate that shit.
Not the best RE, but I think a remake of this would be great. Thanks for another great retrospective review video, Avalanche! ^_^
My pleasure man!
What's your favourite campaign for re2?
I’ll take nemesis over the tyrant any day
I've binge watched almost the whole retrospective series the past couple of days and man.. hats off, thank you for the amazing work.
How dare u sir for your unwarranted criticism's of the last real rE & standout masterpiece in the series , shame .
Please accept me apologies.
SALVIA'&TOAST ؟ RE4 is top 10 games of all time jabroni
MaCeo Millions Not a bad game at all in fact its somewhat of a classic , just not a real rE .. .
@To Release is To Resolve or what ? What u gonna do 😆
The last real rE game was Resident Evil 6. After that it went downhill.
You definitely didn't dodge that nemesis attack. You "dodged" into a wall lol
Well, that explains a lot
Exactly.
Been waiting for this!
Boobtube Jill is the best Jill.
HA!!
My interest as a young lad was piqued.
Tyrant No bro Clare feels more human and real imo.
This isn't about Claire. This is about Jill, and how the tube top version in this game is best Jill.
It's a fact.
The tyrant is entirely scripted while Nemesis has many unscripted moments that just makes hime so much better😅
Quality vid . Enjoyed all of it
Good to hear!
it's really awesome to see others out there to talk like this about my Fav game series and mostly my Fav RE game on the PS1, keep it up, subbed :)
Good to hear!
Would you opinion differ if you had the Japanese version where nemesis does less damage and has scaling health?
+Jacob Carter I actually have the Japanese version. I never knew that was the case. I think I have to give that a try.
The american version for some reason makes nemesis stupid hard.
To the point it isn't worth it to fight him.
That was to stop people renting and completing the game, same reason the Western releases of 1&2 also had increased difficulty.
RE1 and 2 had increased difficulty?
They are super easy!
Jacob Carter I found funny how action games are easy in eastern countries but rpgs are harder and in the west is the opposite
Man these RE retrospectives are the best on the subject out there! Huge respect for you my man, top tier.
Thank you! It's amazing that so many people are getting into these videos.
amazing as always 🖒
Thank you man
I couldn't desagree more, T103 and Nemesis are in no way comparables, the threat in it self its more than obvious, the differences are just not Nemesis saying "S.T.A.R.S.", he chases you to death and can kill you in a blink if you are not careful, the same can't be said for T103 that just walks in a very slow fashion and punch you only if you are close enough plus he appears just like three times in the whole run ,the only time that Mr.
Avalanche Reviews lol ok I will
I literally remember when this game came out!!!! I was at my friends house in his room reading video game magazines and I remember seeing a picture of Jill and thinking she looked hot and my friend agreeing. Remember walking home and asking my mom to get the game but she said I was too young, pissed me off. crazy how I remember the day and everything
This was the most unfair review ever
Was I though?
Nope, the review was spot on like they all are.
"Here's me taking out one of the game's bosses using only the knife" Fails to show the boss being taken out with the knife.
