Regarding the N64 port, it should also be noted that at least one zombie texture has been cut, leaving the game with a little bit less variety in zombie appearance. As well, Claire's voice is used for both cut-scenes with Annette in the sewers where she talks about commando raid and William's infection.

The upside is that Capcom is making excellent Resident Evil games again, so I guess the more times you have to tweak the series and add additional content, the better for all of us! I will get to enjoy more great games as well as more great retrospectives! (Although, I must admit that I'm not looking forward to being hunted by Nemesis...)
Hey Avalanche, thanks for this series. Despite me not playing any other RE game to completion other than the PC port of Revelations prior to finding you, I've watched every single one of these retrospectives. You've near singlehandedly made me appreciate Resident Evil like never before, and made me get excited along my series veteran friends when the RE2 remake was announced.
Now I just gotta keep up with the Silent Hill Retrospectives and whatever the heck you decide to tackle next... I'm sure you can get me interested in another series or few, even if my wallet will eventually suffer!

I've recently played through all of the versions of RE2, except the N64 version. The Sourcenext is the best one. Jared didn't mention that it has a hard mode, and it makes the game truly challenging. Also, it has an Arrange mode that plays exactly like the american and european releases, enemy placements and all.
Great to know! I always wondered what the Arrange mode did on the SourceNext version.
Tiger electronics was obviously the best port to this date. Best part is you could take it on the go!
You could download PS1 classics on PS Vita and I think the older PSPs too.

I feel in the spirit of the original game, I almost feel a Switch port of REmake 2 should be attempted. Though I imagine the likelihood of that is unlikely, especially given the quality of the other RE ports on the system.

I was disappointed, given how re2 is 60 FPS on consoles and RE Engine is multiplatform - oriented. They could have probably attempted 30 FPS 720p at least.
Not every video you make is a masterpiece, but finding one that isn't usually takes a day of binge-watching your content. 😂
And even if it's not a masterpiece, it's either still a relatively great video or just simply a masterpiece and a half..!

18:35 Small correction: the CGI cutscenes in the Sourcenext port of RE2 still play at 30 fps, not 60. There's a mod for the sourcenext port that includes upscaled renditions of the FMVs to 1080p60, but the original source files for RE2 were always limited to just 30 frames. The higher bitrates do give these cutscenes a much stronger cinematic look than the more lo-fi versions, which might create the perception of it being a full 60 frames. But look up the 1080p60fps version of the cutscenes on YT and you'll see the difference immediately.
19:45 the Japanese versions of RE2 weren't made "easier", it was actually the international releases that were made harder.
Btw, i'm surprised you didn't mention the strong red tint the DC version displays in all its backgrounds compared to other versions. There's obviously something that went wrong with the color space conversions during the porting process from the PC version. The weapons also sound quite muffled/not as crisp in this version. For me, those things alone disqualifies the DC port as contender for best version.
I think the N64 character models had polygons culled. The psx had a massively bigger polygon budget which it needed to offset the affline texture swimming due to it not being able to render perspective correct textures.
Actually the n64 could go over the ps1 polygon limit, but it had to be done with a different code set than the ones originally supplied by nintendo. I believe factor five and Rare were the few that I know of that went that far. I'm not sure how much memory a polygon model might create, but I wonder if they were culled due to them trying to save space anywhere they could.
My wallet is glad my eyes don't see resolution issues as well as yours
Same here, I don't know why I never cared about graphics and resolution in games. It never became an obsession to me as it is with others.

I'm really glad this video covers the Seamless HD project mod. This is the first (and only) video covering RE2 ports that touches on this amazing mod. Just FYI. The FMV pack *does* source the SourceNext FMVs but they crop them with black bars instead of letting them run in their full 480p resolution (you can see cut off, top edges of the Japanese subtitles in some FMV's). It's pretty damn ingenious, if you extract the FMV pack you'll see that they are basically thousands of small files, single frames, of the video which are played in real time by the emulator.
Also, the notable red tint on everything on the DC version makes it so that I can't vouch for that version as highly as you do. But this is strictly a personal preference thing.
Yeah I read about the cg's on the site. That's such an amzing workaround!!! I'm blown away at how many small modders and coders are bringing these games back to life for people to enjoy. Very cool stuff.
I kinda hope the old games get a port for next gen (PS5 and the new Xbox). I’m kinda tired of reconnecting my PS3 to play the original 3 RE games
Re 1 did get a remake remastered of the 1 game on the ps4 and Xbox one
The lack of respect for past great games is amazing.
It's not just happening on consoles, it's happening on pc too.
Keep having to return awesome older games as they simply will not work on modern pcs without outside mod support.
Some games are getting remastered and that's good. But many have not been.
Steam/Gog release too. Tomb Raider fans are so lucky they have the original series available on modern retailers. RE deserves the same treatment.

I don't watch your videos consistently, but when I do watch them I can't help but love every second and wish there was more to each video despite there being nothing more to cover. I think that alone speaks to the quality you manage, and thank you for taking your time to cover some of the best games we've ever seen!
Loving your work in general and particularly the Resi retrospective. You go into great detail and highlight ports and versions of the games that I never knew existed, considering I played them back when they were released on the PS1 (showing my age!). Thanks again for your hard work!

Too bad the analog controls kinda suck. Silent Hill 2 at least gave the analog controls there a sense of weight. N64 RE2 controls like Devil May Cry.

The DC and PC versions also have exclusive arrange modes. On DC they're called Expert and Nightmare and on PC they're called Normal and Hard. The DC version and PC version pre-DLL have a red tint to them because the game was translated to a different color space. With the .DLL patch, you can choose between the PSone's color space, the port's default color space, and a neutral RGB color space. I run my DC version at a progressive signal with a high quality upscaler to 1080p. It has a much harsher look than the analog signal you're showing here, which I think has a nice softness to it. Why do you choose not to tap into your DC's progressive signal; and, do you have any vids showcasing your setup? Fantastic, comprehensive video!

The seamless HD mod in 4k on an OLED tv is pretty magical. Been playing through RE3 with it.
The work they did on re3 is much better looking than 2. I heard from some people that 2 is still being worked on, while re3 was their baby from the getgo. Both are amazing though.

There is an HD mod available for Re2 and 3 via a GameCube emulator. The crispest backgrounds by far.

Playing the GC version in 240p on a crt is the best way! Super smooth graphics combined with scanlines is to die for.
The GC ver is 480i, but it sure as hell looks great on a CRT. Looks even better when you force 480i through Swiss.

I recently obtained the GC ports of both RE 2 and RE 3. I paid more than I would’ve liked, but I’m happy to finally have them in my collection since I’ve never had them. For the GC at least.
It felt like the Dreamcast is the best home for Resident Evil. It's just a shame it never got a official port of the first game, then you could go through the original trilogy with ease!

So, as it turns out, it seems RE2 could have actually fit on one disc. I actually don't remember if you were the one that pointed that out or not, but I do remember finding the information in my own research for the game. Plan to do my own little RE thing, though been meaning to ask how you might feel about that, since you've basically become the RE Retrospective guy. Anyhow, it seems they miscalculated how much data their sound formula was going to take, and didn't realize it'd actually fit all on one disc until it was too late.

It's so upsetting to see such an awesome and informative TH-camr with only 49K Subscribers. He should easily have 500K subscribers. Jared you are awesome!!! I don't care what anyone else's opinion is about your videos I have re-watched lots of your videos just for the fact that they are enjoyable and refreshing especially your Resident Evil videos. I think it's a crime you have 49k subs which is a lot compared to regular people like me or most of your subs but not for the quality of work you put out. Keep doing what you're doing! You're the best! With that being said your methods are cool and the fact that you are able to run all these "retro classics" on actual hardware is cool as hell however, I have always felt emulation is the easiest way to go and you can upscale and all that good stuff on it. Now what you do is way cooler and very informative but emulation is the easiest way to play all your favorite classics.

My first RE game. Played it on a friend's PS1 back in the day, and then got the N64 version and played it to death. I recently repurchased that version and still love it. It looks fine on a fat CRT. Vita port is my second port of choice, but there's no denial that og PS1 version is the way to go. Keep up the good work man! I love your channel.
RE2 on N64 was my first RE game and my first purchase using Christmas money at Best Buy which had just opened in my area. RE2 has always been my favorite of the series.

@21:51 To fix the native slowness on the gamecom emulator, there is a gamecom.ini file*, in that text file there is a setting for speed. I change that setting to 120 and the games play close to oem speed. In the emu you can only set it to 100 which is too slow.

You can also speed it up 10 - 15 % in post to get it about right. I want to say the emulator plays all the games at 80% speed when it is set at 100 in the speed setting. 120 in the cfg throws up an error but just works for me.
Wtf dude? You DIDN'T mention the looong loading-time for each camera angle in the Dreamcast-version!
I'm glad you mentioned the hidden items (green herb in planter, handgun rounds etc.) because no one ever seems to. I think they are absent in most ports of the game at least in PAL territories, only being present on the PS1

I actually needed a unified source comparing all the Classic RE2 versions in one. Having dabbled with the Seamless HD version, I'm gonna check out the patched Sourcenext version as well.
In the meantime I lost track of how many times I played the new RE2 while waiting for the new RE3 to drop. What a time for an RE fan to be alive.

good god that HD mod is amazing I remember seeing stories about that being used on Final Fantasy 7 a while back but I didnt realize they did the same for RE2 I might have to give that a go sometime!

IIRC it was considered but never given anything beyond that due to RE:DS' unimpressive sales, alas - which sucks because I think RE2DS would've been another excellent port if nothing else.

The upscaling stuff on RE2 is amazing. Although there’s obviously more to be done, it’s incredible to think where this tech could take us within the next few years.
I can't totally vouch for the Gamecube transition loads, but my PAL Discs never seemed to take that long to load, but I may just be remembering wrong
I haven't played R.E. 2 in like 12 years and the fact that I can see a high difference in the PC cutscene is amazing!
I think the re4 announcer is good for 4-5 because of the places that story took place. A village in Spain far away from civilization and a city in middle of nowhere in Africa. But i agree re2,3 and almost rest of the games in the series need more high toon voice and i know it's strange but kinda more "official".
THERE was also a standalone handheld version made by tiger electronics as part of their 99x series, but it's extremely rare, the series itself is poorly documented, and the game is nearly identical to the game com version, so it's best to not go down that rabbit hole.

I've only finished a few of the RE games, but your videos make me want to play through them all. Secondly, what settings or firebrand profile are you using for PS1 and PS2 framemeister footage? Mine doesn't look quite that good. Lastly, how did you get around the framemeister 240p/480i resolution switch issue with the PS1 and N64 ports? Thanks for all the content and keep up the great work!

unrelated note, would you have a link to them ultimate PC fan editions ? RE2 was literally the first PS1 game i ever owned. (folks literally had to have a go at the shop staff, as they refused to let them buy it for me.) Ironic since already played chunks of it at a friend's.

I bought the N64 port last year just for the technical marvel that it is. I enjoyed it, but I love how it's also the heaviest cartridge in the N64 library, something which is noticeable when holding it.
I wasn't expecting a gymnastics school video when I opened the link to the Classic Rebirth mod honestly.

Those 60fps cutscenes are pretty damn good. only the background zombies and one part were he bends down at the car, feels like it's anything less than 60. and the crispness is super nice to look at, even with the old graphics

@@AvalancheReviews Even without going back and playing it last night/this morning, it was clear even in the little clip you showed. Most people probably don't recognize it (or at least right away), which is good. I'm wondering if it is still 60fps, but the animations in those specific sections are animated with more keyframes? Giving it the look as if it were less when put up to 60fps. Cause 30-40fps was standard and good quality at the time. So they may have animated less because there is so much on the screen in that moment (especially with the fire effects)

You can find this place on the french part of wikipedia. The guy was president of the city council from 1914 to 1919. They gave his name to the place because he lived there... The more you know I guess.

Best Christmas present ever
Lossy compression is a monster to tackle, from the in-game assets having it to the YT video codec adding artifacts. It was weird when the GBA arrived since you had a lossless graphics foundation meeting a generation of game developers trained with lossy approaches and it was like oil and water heh.
The N64 port is a miracle of compression but hard to play on a modern display, nothing to hide those artifacts anymore. The evolution of compression is interesting, definitely has improved visually but the new forms don't actually work on old hardware because there is a CPU & RAM bandwidth requirement with them. Would love a modern hindsight take on a SS codec since it was pretty blocky even for that era.

I've never played the DC version of this game. In fact the Dreamcast never really took off here where I live. I grew up with the PS1 version.However, patched sourcenext version is still my go-to port of RE2 ever since I started playing it in 2014. I like having 180° turns, being able to reload guns at any time with the press of a button and being able to skip door opening sequences. It really is the most fun way to play this game.

The graphics never mattered to me, I just loved playing the game. To this day, I don't have a sensitive enough eye to care about the different versions. The only thing that matters most to me is being able to skip cutscenes for replays, so the gamecube version is my go to.
