    I have been drawing and painting for about a good 15 years now, and today only, from all the styles I have tried, I have tried this for the first time. This is a great way to get the character out of your mind and just out there! Thanks for your insight and advice, this is a great demonstration, and some fantastic art!

      I also feel like it takes me forever to make a silhouette unlike other artists who say it takes them like 1 hour. Maybe time just feels slow 😜

    • @garylaibart
      @garylaibart  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nothingspeaks Hey! So a few things. 1. Don't worry about how long it takes you to make a silhouette. Quality over speed is always preferable. If you try to do something fast, chances are you might miss the chance to learn something and could end up with a subpar design. 2. When I'm doing silhouettes, I have my brush opacity at 100% so I'm not bogged down by layering the strokes. I just mess with the shape, carving into it with the BG gray and then pushing the design again with black. It's a bit like sculpting. All you're doing is trying to find shapes. Cleanliness comes with practice. :) Feel free to shoot me a message with your email and I'll send you the brush! Thanks!

    • @garylaibart
      @garylaibart  ปีที่แล้ว

      It may work just as well if you find a good brush pen to build up the silhouette part and then use white acrylic, gouache, or some other white pigment to cut into that silhouette to create detail.

    hey gary, i have couple of question to ask.
    1)is it good to have always a reference for creating concepts for anything like for games?
    2) or for drawing and creating anything through imagination what would be your advice?
    3) if using reference does it means that u are stealing the information or the designs from that piece whoever has created that?
    4) using references is it for increasing your visual library?
    plz reply. nice informative video btw

    • @garylaibart
      @garylaibart  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are all great questions and I’ll try to answer them in the order you asked.
      1. Yes, if you find that the reference image helps to inspire your own design, it’s important to use reference. This helps build your visual library as your skills improve over time. Professional artists use reference daily if there’s something they need to create that they’ve never drawn or painted before.
      2 and 3. Through imagination can be the same thing. I’ll answer the second and third questions together- References are used not as a one-to-one copy unless you’re doing a master study or a portrait/fine art piece. Also, if you’re using reference for a specific pose or parts of a pose. The reference acts as inspiration only. Say you need to design a character with a shark head. If you’ve never drawn a shark head before, you’ll need reference to make sure that the anatomy is correct and you’re doing the character justice. If you’re using another artists work for inspiration you should NEVER do a one-for-one copy of their art. That’s plagiarism. Use it has a jumping off point to inspire only. If your character has mech legs, don’t copy another artists design.
      4. Yes, using reference will increase your visual library. Over time you’ll be able to draw a shark head without reference. The thing is artists never stop learning, and never stop trying to draw new things, but the more they build their visual library, the more successful they can be when drawing from imagination.
      I hope this helps! Please feel free to ask me anything you like! I’m happy to answer!

      @@garylaibart thank u so much for explaning the stuffs. these will help a lot. few more things to ask as i was going through your reply, these questions arised. say if you are creating anything and u are using refrence, so how to find appropriate refrences and use to it efficiently?? how to take that reference's designs and create it in own way for our concepts and as per requirements? how pros do? how you think and how other pros think? plz if possible make a video on creating a concept art from scratch, like from ideation like how to think what to create, then writing descriptions for that, then reference gathering, then starting the concepts like silhouttes design, then sketching out the details and last to final concepts. this is will be very usefull. thnks

    • @garylaibart
      @garylaibart  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@valtaoi1586 You’re very welcome. Wow that’s a lot more questions. Lol. There’s no wrong reference because you’re not going to be making a direct copy. If you find that a piece of art or a photo “feel” like they fit with the theme of what you’re going to draw then use it. Have a separate board or file open with all of your reference. HOW you use it efficiently is all up to the artist’s individual process. One way to do it would be to (and we’re sticking with the shark head analogy) draw a rough shark head based off of the photo. Then draw it from several other positions. Pick which version you like then do several variations on that one- like changing size of eyes, teeth placement, scars, tattoos, piercings, etc…. As for making a new video, it will be a while before I’m able to do that, but I am teaching a class in the Fall with Brainstorm School called “Story-driven Character Design”. If that’s something you might be interested in, you should check it out. It’s online.

      Hi Kryss. I'm happy to send the brush I'm using in this video to you via email if you'd like to reach out. Otherwise, a brush with a nice tooth and texture can treat you pretty well and give you some nice grit to your silhouettes. Many artists just use a hard round brush as well.
