After struggling with recapturing my sketching abilities for a while, turns out creating characters through silhouettes and quickly blobbing things out resonates me so much more. I suppose this is a little more painterly? If you're struggling growing your art skills, I'd really recommend giving this method a go. Great video!
I struggle to do a full character shape, but this is still very helpful for designing elements, such as different robot feet shapes or weaponry silhouettes. Thanks for the quick video!
You’re very welcome spinafire, I’m happy to see that it’s useful to you. Give it some time, you might be able to eventually do full characters if you just keep on practicing and applying this technique. Just keep on thinking about your primary shapes and what kind of emotion or mood you want them to evoke. Then you can try to apply some healthy composition rules to it, like having big, medium and small shapes present… or emphasizing main shapes and combining it with contrasting accent shapes. Keep these kind of things in mind, and I’ll think you’ll gradually get there. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey! 😉👍🏻
I cannot thank you enough! I just came across your channel through this video, and this video has given me the most help and insight anybody has provided through silhouette use in character and unit design. You have a new subscriber! 🎉
Thanks FerreusUltor, I’m happy to hear that you enjoy the content and that it is helping you move forward on your creative journey. Wishing you all the best! 😉👍🏻
I'm happy you like it Chiparooo. It's very effective at coming up with quick ideas which can often give you an additional boost of confidence. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey :)
The police dog is an awesome concept! I imagine it to be bulletproof and in hot pursuit of a gunman while blaring the siren on its back! Very futuristic :)
Haha… I recognize the incident quite well. I have some traditional driven students as well and I also started from traditional production methods when I was a student myself. Enjoy the process buddy 😉👍🏻
Love this technique, would you add a tip about using this process for drawing multiple concepts intended to be for the same chatacter? as in the one you like the most is the one you will feature
That’s exactly right El Pretender. You can perfectly use this technique to refine your silhouettes towards finding a final design for a specify character. 🙂
Hey I have an odd question for you. Here in Asia character design and concept art are treated like 2 different Jobs. To get a career in America do I have to learn environments/vehicles aswell? My passion is to create characters and creatures but If I have to learn everything else I will. I just feel like focusing on my passion would be 10 times more efficient
Hi Shine Luck, in America as well as in Europe there isn’t as much separation between character and environment artists as in Asia (at least from what I’ve heard). That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any character designers in the West though. We’ve got plenty of them as well. The issue is becoming one straight off the bat... That might be a bit trickier. Generally, not always and here again it will depend on which studio we’re talking about, you’d start off as a junior concept artist and work your way up towards senior concept artist that still does both or in some studios you’d eventually specialize in characters or environments only. But most of the time senior concept artists can do both quite well. It’s not very common to for example have character designers like Yoji Shinkawa working in the west (or at least they’re not as glorified as in the east). So what I would do if I were in your shoes, would be to get a strong foundation in art (perspectives, color theory, anatomy, etc.) and from there on have a solid generalized portfolio just to increase your chances at finding work as a starter (smaller indi studios might be more flexible about starting as a character artist). Once you’ve got that down, try to work your way up and convince the studio where you’re working at to work on characters only if there’s a clear demand or need within the studio. I think that would be the safest bet from a business perspective. Going directly for character artist is perfectly possible, but might proof a bit more challenging depending on your skills. The better your portfolio is, the easier everything will ever be. I hope this helps a bit. I wish you all the best on your creative journey and hope to see you on the field someday ;) Take care friend!
@@artofdavidarroyo Thank you very much for the reply, I really appreciate your answer, it is very clear and informative. I studied (and still do) fundamentals for years and I just didn't touch subjects like buildings and environments because of personal interest but now that I know how things work It will take a little bit longer to get there, It's definitely worth the effort. Big thanks to you and I hope people who are confused about this topic will find this post and get a clear vision.
Hey I would like to ask which brush you used to create the silhouettes. I’m using procreate too but feel pretty uncomfortable creating silhouettes with the brushes that I use currently :(
Hi buddy, I used the technical pen and the studio pen for the silhouettes in black. Then inside a clipping mask I used the old original round brush from previous Procreate versions. This one is from before Procreate 4. You can still find it on their forums. It’s like the current round brush but with additional texture to it. I hope this helps. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
Thanks MacDonellCashRicher, even though I’m replying four months too late, I’d still like to thank you. It’s true that the fifth silhouette has some paladin vibes. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey. 😉👍🏻
