To anyone who is wondering why the hell the suicidal cavalry charge against a box formation aka Carré. This is a MOVIE, ok? In reality Nicholas sent 5 waves of elite cavalry guard , Cuirassiers , to DEMONSTRATE an attack on the carrė. He hoped to disperse the soldiers, who had no idea what the hell they are doing there, in order not to spill Russian blood on his first day as an Emperor. Cuirassiers didn't draw their swords and the soldiers plaid along by firing in the air. The fifth wave went awfully wrong because the cavalry charged not against the line infantry but naval infantry, who weren't trained enough to play the game. They shot straight and killed a dozen of cuirassiers and wounded scores.
That was it. Nicholas ordered 4 cannons to open grape shot fire and quickly broke the resistance. Around 250 soldiers were killed and drowned. A number of bystanders died in a stampede that followed the shootout.

P.S. Another dramatic episode was missed in the movie. During this long day a group of rebels decided to attack the palace and take the royal family hostage. Fortunately, a loyal battalion of sappers took positions at the palace minutes before the break in and saved the Empress and the children. When Nicholas returned home he literally took his 7 year old son, the future Tsar Alexander II The Liberator and passed him to the soldiers of the battalion as a sign of greatfullness and total trust. Soldiers passed the boy across the square and returned him to his father.

The decembrist Bulatov knew this and he asked to the top people of the revolt some cannon batteries, cavalry and more men, but this did not happened.

While the enemy in this movie (unwisely and ahistorically) spent his cavalry in a rather stupid frontal charge on the Decemberists in Square, there are more where those came from and infantry to boot. If you ran and the enemy cared, you could easily be run down in droves by giant horses and men flashing sabers and lances or infantry charging in order.

Well, nobody expected this to turn into a cannon fight.
The Decembrists were trying to stage a mock-up armed insurection to occupy the palace yard and the Imperial cavalry was staging mock-up charges. It was basically a mexican stand-off until part of the Decembrist forces with less trained soldiers lost the nerve in front of the cavalry and opened fire on the cavalry.
Canister was such a dirty weapon during that time.

The discipline of the soldiers standing in the line and holding formation under artillery fire is amazing. It was critical for the combat of those days to hold the formation otherwise they get scattered and killed by dragoon attacks.

Thirty-eight years later (1863) canister shot would play a huge role in repelling Pickett's Charge (Gettysburg). Interesting fact. A year before Gettysburg, artillery (using Canister shot) would play a significant role in repelling the CSA at the Battle of Malvern Hill outside of Richmond, Virginia.

its the most painful thing to happen to a soldier, when u are fighting the people who are supposed to be your brothers and wears the same uniform. This happened to my country during a coup d etat. I was a child back then but my father fought that battle as a government loyalist. He said it was awful and many of his men did cry after each engagement sad of what had happened.

While I'm thoroughly on the Decembrist side, as a Pole... I wonder how many of the common soldiers on this square were aware they were dragged into what's essentially a coup d'etat and not something legitimate.
revolting soldiers were asked afterwards and said they thought Konstitutsiya (constitution) was Constantine's wife. whether this is genuine or a lie is unknown, but considering most soldiers chose to oppose the Decembrists i think it might be accurate.
This is the elite of the Russian army, they understood everything perfectly. And palace coups were a tradition of the Russian Empire. Of course, they had some idea of what a constitution is. And they perfectly understood Constantine is more legitimate than Nikolai.
By the way, there were the Decembrists who wanted to annex Poland to Russia in a unitary state and begin russification.

All said the same thing to their classes. Later while in university, I heard the same from other emigres and from 'merkin instructors in history classes. Too much smoke to ignore.
Those days were confusing times in Russia. There were many who wanted to basically copy the American Constitution as the new Russian Constitution. The Decembrist could be called Russian Americanophiles. There were also factions that wanted a federation of Russia (including Ukraine), Poland, Moldavia (including Bessarabia) with the attachment of Wallachia, Transylvania, Hungary (including Slovakia, Slovenia, Vojvodina, the Carpatho-Ukraine aka Zarkarpattia), Croatia, Serbia, Dalmatia, the Czech lands of Bohemia and Moravia, i.e. all Slavic & Vlach countries with the exception of Bulgaria and Macedonia,Poland. Very interesting history.

The Decembrists Revolts are some of the trippiest thing's I've read about. More specifically the dichotomy of the Northern and Southern Societies of the Union of Salvation.
The Northern Society wanted to abolish serfdom and establish a constitutional monarchy with equal justice under the law. Their members were the ones who showed up to the senate square.
The Southern Society was batsh*t insane and was some sort of communist - fascist hybrid with a need for land redistribution, a craving for the execution of the royal family, and a lust for a united Slavic federation spanning from as south as the Balkans and as far west as Czechia. Except North Macedonia and Bulgaria were exempt for some reason. They were the scary ones.
Yeah. That's why I prefer Northern Society. Southern society wanted to exterminate the entire Romanov dynasty, including children, because they did not want to repeat the situation as in France, when the Bourbons returned after Napoleon. Psychos.

OK, so let me get this straight... You're nice and comfy in your barracks as usual, then the order comes for your unit to gear up, march out and form up at the Senate Square. You stand there and stand there, *yawn*, there's some speeches and stuff, some cavalry feints, a little bit of shooting, and then you get shredded to pieces by grapeshot. And shortly before you die an agonising death from your wounds a few days later, you learn that it was all just a mutinous and illegal attempt by your commanding officers to influence the Royal Succession.

Debatable if it would be considered an illegal attempt. They wanted liberal reform in the country and they thought they’d get it with Constantine. Problem was that he didn’t want the throne enough and stepped down when Nicolas asked “nicely”. The Union of National Salvation didn’t know he “willfully” stepped down nor that he didn’t actually want the throne, they (the leaders of the coup) thought they were fighting for the true claimant to the throne because they knew that Nicolas was an autocrat who would sidelines any reforms.
Though the thought of soldiers not knowing they are part of a coup is odd, but it wasn’t just the 18-19th century when that happens. Kinda bittersweetly funny tbh.
Imagine you, a Soviet soldier of the Red Army being told that the Premier has fallen ill and that the government needs to maintain order so you are sent to Moscow where you see civilians yelling at you and fellow Red Army soldiers standing against you and is that…President Yeltsin, the guy you just voted for on a tank calling you a coupist?

Absolutely not, the Romans did not appoint them as their successors. The true continuation of the Roman Empire is Modern Greece, build and forged by the Roman Greeks, either free or enslaved by the Turks.

The last legitimate ruler of Byzantium was Constantine XI Palaiologos. The Turks killed him during the siege of Constantinople. His children were forced to give up their rights to the throne. Another potential heir - Andreas Palaiologos - renounced the throne for money and converted to Islam. Same as his brother Manuel.
However, Constantine's niece Sophia Palaiologina managed to escape from Constantinople. She came to Rome and, later, to Moscow. After the fall of Byzantium, Russia remained the last Orthodox state on Earth, so it was a wise decision. There she married Ivan III, the Grand Prince of all Rus, and, having the legal right to inherit the Byzantine throne, she passed the right of succession to the Rurik dynasty. Also, as part of her dowry, she granted Russia the right to use the sign of the Imperial House of Palaiologos - a golden two-headed eagle.
So yes, Russia has every right to be called the heir of Rome. However, she is not the only one. There is also Germany and, to a lesser extent, Spain. Germany inherits this right through The Holy Roman Empire. And the Spanish royal family also married one of the Palaiologos. However, their claim is less significant, since it is Russia that is the throne of Orthodoxy - the heart and soul of Byzantium. Well, and the Greeks, oddly enough, have the least rights. All of their rulers ultimately transferred their rights to the throne to others: some on pain of death, some through marriage, and some simply for money.

No, that is not the case, and the explanation is rather simple. I must say that I am fully aware of all the facts you have mentioned. The thing is though that in the Roman Empire the title of Roman Emperor was not one like that of nobility for Western Europe, and eventually all of post-Medieval Era. One could not simply transfer it to someone else, buy it from him or even seize it. To be a Roman Emperor one needed to be a Roman Citizen, but also be accepted and recognised by the Roman Senate, Roman Army and Roman People as such, the protector and vanguard of the Roman State and Roman Republic!
After the bitter end of the last true Roman Emperor, Constantinos XI Dragatses Paleologos in 1453 AD, along with the capital of the Roman State, New Rome, the institution of the Roman Empire was simply abolished, because there was no Roman Emperor proclaimed by the still free Romans in Morea. The only one who still existed was David Megalos Komnenos of the Empire of Trabzond in Pontus, while the former's brothers (he had no children), Thomas and Demetrios Paleologos were simply called Despots of Morea. And while the latter two either surrendered or fled, they had absolutely no legal authority to sell the title of Roman Emperor, which was legally impossible as I said. The Roman Emperorship was directly linked to the Roman State, and without it, it does not exist. On the other hand, the Emperor of Trabzond was not the Roman Emperor of the true Roman State, but a broken of state (*)
Anyways, after the fall of New Rome in 1453 AD, the Roman State continued to survive in the face of the Despotate of Morea. However, this ended in 1460 AD, when the Paleogoli brothers surrendered to Mehmet II, and much of the government in exile that had formed in Mystras after the fall of Constantinople, relocated in the peninsula of Mani. There they established a new govermnent in exile of the Roman State, joined by local nobility, and formed the Republic of Mani, based on Oilyton as their capital. This later form of the Roman State had a political system of a noble federational republic, and there was no emperor chosen, ergo the Romans themselves rejected the idea of having a Roman Emperor, hence there is none after the last that fell in 1453 AD. Now Mani was a proper state, filling all modern criteria of a state, that never fell of subdued to the Ottoman Turks, and the indomitable Romans always defended against the invader. This situation continued all the way to 1821 AD, when Mani officially merged with the newly formed Greek Republic, officially recognised in 1830 AD. Because of this, the direct continuation of Rome is none other than Greece itself, a living statehood that continues uninterrupted since it's foundation by Romulus in the 21st of April in 753 BC.
(*) Interesting to note is that while David Megalokomnenos died in 1463 AD as a martyr and saint along most of his sons, the seventh one escaped and survived. In 1474 AD he managed to reach and seek refuge in the Republic of Mani, where he was accepted by the Maniot "Laconian" Senate as a refugee protected in their state with the right of asylum, granted him citizenship and the status of an "Elder" (in the Senate), and accepted him as son of a Roman Emperor. However, while he went on to found the House of Komneni of Mani, which survives to date under the name of Stefanopouli, he was never proclaimed Roman Emperor, exactly because the Roman State was now again a Roman Republic and not a Roman Empire, abolishing the institutions of Augustus Octavianus.

How about not claiming the foreign titles of your allies and benefactors, who offered you Russians your true faith, and influenced you so deeply in terms of culture, language and politics? Especially when the title of Roman Emperor was so linked to the Roman State, meaning that it could not exist in a different statehood.
If at least the Russians were the great protectors of Orthodox Christianity they claimed to be, and actually strived to free their old friends, the Greek Romans who lived under brutal Ottoman Turkish rule, then it would be even acceptable. But the Russians that pretended illegitimately to be the Third Rome, even abandoned the Roman Greeks in their misery and fate, after the Greek Revolution of 1770 that they themselves had instigated! And to think that after said disaster, the Ottoman Turks were even contemplating on completely exterminanting all Greeks in their territory, and only did not commit such a crime because they did not want to lose the heavy taxes they were profiting on their backs!!! (and then people say Greeks were not enslaved)

Полагаю, потому что им толком не с чем сравнивать современные фильмы о русской истории? Да и вроде бы фильм «разнесли» по фактам. Для иностранцев Россия и её история - нечто сокровенное и таинственное. Не могу припомнить ещё более-менее известных современных фильмов о внутренней кухне нашей Родины, либо где нет пресловутой клюквы.
ну потому что его нельзя назвать хорошим фильмом. Как всегда за последние годы - отличная графика, приличная музыка (хотя тут слизана с меча короля артура) и какой-то слабо вменяемый сюжет и композиция уровня российских сериалов. Для сравнения можно турецкий гамбит глянуть. Тоже местами скомкано, но смотрится на порядок лучше

Got to watch the full movie on TH-cam and enjoyed it very much! Very cool scene they did here. I always heard of the "Decembrist" revolt from Russian History but never knew a whole lot about it and it was neat to see some of the background to it.

The era of standing in a line and exchanging fire with the opposing army will always be fascinating to me. It was a crazy tactic in my opinion.
I do a lot of American Civil War studying in my spare time, I'm not sure about bigger war or other nations, but during the Civil War, the man next to you would've been from your community and more than likely your brother father or cousin. Thinking about that makes scenes like these hard for me to watch
before rifling become common practice and given to common line soldier not just to elite sharp shooters, you actually had huge chance to never be grazed by single bullet as smoothbore muskets were not that accurate begin with but it was change when peole still used 400 years tactic when rilfed musket become standard issues at Us civil war, even when early ww1 they though they would did the same but they just from farther range.
@@jalpat2272 On the other hand, if a musket ball did hit you, you would often have to wait for days to receive any medical care, and most likely a limb would be amputated if you survived up to that point.

@@jalpat2272 Also, line tactics were imnportant in order to keep control of unit move,ents back then. There were no radios - only signal corp officers who were near the commanders. Each company had a few men who were responsible for keeping an eye on those signal flags.

Nicholas 1 acted very humanely. The investigation lasted six months. Out of several thousand participants, only 5 conspirators were executed.
The sixth (Count Trubetskoy) escaped from the square before the events began. He took the soldiers to the square in the morning and ran away. He was exiled to Siberia with his family.
The officers who tricked the soldiers into coming to the square were also exiled. The soldiers were not punished. Since they were deceived by their commanders.
The goal of the conspirators was to destroy the reigning family and the change of power in the country.
By law, the throne should have been occupied by the eldest: Constantine. He ruled Poland then (Poles don't like us for that either). The Poles wanted to kill Ivan 4 in the 16th century. The liberal part of the West does not like this tsar, because he was able to uncover the conspiracy. And the power in Russia has not changed. The West called him "Terrible". Although in Russia he was called "The Great One".
So. Constantine did not give an answer for a long time about the abdication of the throne. This time of troubles, when the emperor was absent, the Decembrists decided to use it.
The soldiers were persuaded that Nicholas illegally wanted to appropriate power for himself (Konstantin later wrote about the abdication of the throne). They talked about the Constitution. The soldiers asked "Who is the Constitution?". They were told, "This is Konstantin's wife." They warmed their hearts about the reforms. That we will live well (we needed the support of a large part of the population. And so on.
Those young officers studied in France and Great Britain. Freemasonry was developing in Europe at that time. And there is a version that their young were lured by a beautiful European life. Recruited in one word.
Napoleon was also elected at the time. And then he appointed himself emperor for life. Europe in Russia also wanted to make the succession of power. Who wrote the Constitution for the Decembrists is also unknown. Did they write it themselves?
The Constitution was going to be adopted later by the son of Nicholas 1, Alexander 2. On March 2, 1881. But the tsar was killed the day before the adoption of the Constitution. And the question of its acceptance again hung for an indefinite period. The demand to adopt the Constitution came out again in 1917. And that's when the tsar and his family were already killed. 100 years almost after the attempt to kill the reigning family.
There is a version that there was only a staged murder. And the family was taken to Europe. The decorations of the tsar's wife are regularly noticed on Queen Elizabeth 2 and on other women of the reigning family.

Short version. The good guys lost. Russia's serfs suffered for many more years. The Decemberists used the army to avoid bloodshed of civilians like the French Revolution. They wanted a constitutional monarchy written up like the US one (but better I think). Sad they did not get that manifesto out. Russia would be 110% better today if so.

Another thing is surprising - how diligently the West tries to imagine that the Russian army was poorly dressed. When the British last filmed the novel "War and Peace", the British press had a claim to the director of the series that the Russians had too beautiful military uniforms.
