  • All the birds in this video are WILD and can enter and leave as they please.
This video are meant to document the lives of wild barn owl and kestrel in order that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene. All the videos are documenting wild animals.
We love nature and want to share some of the beautiful wildlife in Israel.

The pairs name: Male = "Guintas" | Female= "Yasmin"
    Date of egg laying:
    Egg 1 = Feb. 17, 2022
    Egg 2 = Feb. 20, 2022
    Egg 3 = Feb. 22, 2022
    Egg 4 = Feb. 24, 2022
The barn owl cam is part of a citizen science study led by the GAIA Project, WBAIS and the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (The Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa) and funded by the USA Embassy in Israel, a private donor and the GAIA Project. The wild barn owl pair breeds in a nest box we built and added on the middle school. This is the second year in a row the owl pair has bred at the school. The wild barn owls breed in a nest box that we added as past of our biological pest control of of rodents in agriculture where they hunt rodent pests in the agricultural field next to the school. The male is lighter/whiter owl and the female is browner/darker one. For more information please see: www.birdboxisrael.org/

Once a bird of prey attacks, its claws are locked for a while. Nature's way of making sure prey doesn't get away. The bird couldn't have left even if it wanted to. Once the owl and the kestrel were physically able to let eachother go again, the bird started its escape attempt.

probably cuz kestrels & other daylight birds of prey like eagles & hawks don’t know much about owls?… they’re always hidden away during the day sleeping ofc but perhaps they also occasionally watch the kestrels, hawks, etc that are out in the air hunting during the day… & they know their evening routines as they go to sleep at night as the owls begin to get ready to take flight into the night. I’ve seen trail camera of an owl stalking a red tail hawks nest with its chicks, you can see the hawks nest & a pair of eyes in the background before the eyes just down & fly up you can see the silhouette of the owl come up & yank the younger hawk right outta the nest☠️ mother hawk woke up startled not even realizing what happened yet.

Erm, sorry to tell you, but owls aren't actually that bright. When everything stopped, they probably didn't know what to do because there was no movement. Especially the one sat on the eggs (I assume the mother). She was clearly confused and only realised when the kestrel moved again. Also, it was the kestrel that had hold of the barn owl.

The only reason why I think it was 'controlled' is the kestrel was assessing the situation against 'two' birds vs. one. Fun to read everybody’s take on this. I was impressed by the sound communication. The male owl started to get fed up and probably grabbed the intruder harder with its claws. The intruder started screaming. That’s when the male owl let it go and the pair let it get out after that. The intruder was flapping around a lot while trying to get out, and it could have been seen as yet another attack, but I think that the verbal communication was understandable for all parts and that’s why the owls leaned back while the intruder tried to get out.

Who's incubating generally isn't a good rule of thumb for gender with a lot of birds though, some species they both incubate (some take turns swapping every hour or so, some have day/night shifts, the African Common Waxbill incubate together), with others only the female incubates, and with others only the male incubates.

    -That owl (probably)

  • @a.m11558
    @a.m11558 2 ปีที่แล้ว +350

    Here’s a rundown:
Kestrel was perched outside and likely aware that there were owls nesting there, but wasn’t sure if they were present at that time or not. Kestrel tries to land on the rim of the entrance to peer in but misjudges the width and ends up falling into the nest itself.
    Not good for Kestrel.
The owl that confronts Kestrel is Owl A, which i believe is a male. The owl that defends the eggs is Owl B, female. Mummy.
Both of their instincts kick in immediately and they know to function as a team and multitask by Owl A dealing with the threat and Owl B protecting the eggs.
Kestrel falls in and Owl A positions himself beneath it to latch onto the intruder, but as Kestrel falls its own instincts kick in and it also latches, so both grab each other’s legs. Interestingly, Owl B moves as soon as Kestrel falls in and begins flapping her arms, which indicates she was trying to frighten the threat instinctively despite not needing to.
Owl A is clearly experienced in bird-on-bird combat and immediately attempts to pin Kestrel to the floor by throwing it down.
At this point Kestrel is in trouble and is well aware it has fucked up.
It tries to release its legs with a kick but Owl A has it pinned there and Kestrel’s right talon has locked up, a problem for birds of prey as this means Kestrel cannot release itself from Owl A.
As such, they wrestle for a bit but Owl A is much larger and stronger than Kestrel, and the fight takes Kestrel to the corner near the eggs, which greatly distresses Owl B.
Realising it can’t escape, Kestrel starts making a distress call and this is also likely due to pain and stress. Neither the Kestrel nor Owl A want to harm each other, they would much rather they both go their seperate ways and avoid conflict, but Owl A doesn’t know if Kestrel will leave if it lets go, and is also likely confused as to why Kestrel is still gripping its leg.
Kestrel ends up upright and Owl A settles, which settles Kestrel. The sudden shift in the dynamic of the fight results in Owl B leaning in and inspecting Kestrel, as she is confused as well. Why isn’t the threat moving anymore? Is it still a threat?
She examines Kestrel very closely and this is also a show of dominance. Both owls are now aware that Kestrel is going to have a very hard time fighting them both and causing any major damage, it just isn’t going to happen. Kestrel knows this too as during the scuffle it had either forgotten there was a second owl or was simply unaware in the first place. Kestrel freezes in place so as not to give them any immediate reason to kill it. You can see by Kestrel’s breathing it is very, very distressed.
As soon as Owl B moves away Kestrel makes an attempt at escaping and tries to leave, but its right talons are still locked and Owl A has his right talons locked on Kestrel’s left ankle. Owl A places Kestrel against the wall and Owl B begins a threatening motion which makes Kestrel less confident and less likely to attack. You can see Kestrel looking frantically at her at this point.
Owl A then attempts (quite confidently) to bite Kestrel’s throat, and Kestrel recoils and starts going ballistic to get free. Owl A once more uses his superior weight and strength to pin Kestrel down and then bites out some of Kestrel’s plumage in an attempt to get to its flesh. This is when Kestrel becomes once more very distressed and starts calling again.
Owl A gets a good bite on the back of Kestrel’s head but Kestrel manages to get its head free and tries to throw itself backwards away from Owl A. Notice that both owls are quite calm and neither one of them is calling or being very aggressive. Owl B settles on the eggs and Owl A is now intent on killing Kestrel.
He begins applying more pressure and corners Kestrel, smothering it and probably biting a few more times. This is when Owl B becomes more active and Kestrel finally gets its legs free, flapping up and around frantically to stay out of Owl A’s striking range. Kestrel is so stressed that it is disoriented and it takes some time until it leaves.

Excellent summary! I also noticed that in the latter half of the struggle, the kestrel struck at Owl A's face with a talon, clawing very close to its eye and I think scratching its nose (do owls have ceres?). At another point, before the kestrel began its escape attempts, Owl A bit down on the kestrel's beak. So brutal!

Could it be that the kestrel was just looking for a nesting place and didn't see the owls at all? Attacking two owls would be pretty crazy.

This kestrel roosts on top of the nest and this was not the first time. She wanted the box but the owls are just too big. see th-cam.com/video/ugd2TMoKZSg/w-d-xo.html thenth-cam.com/video/UL1jy9n5LYQ/w-d-xo.html

@@VL1975 Bro these people just have a camera setup. They could literally know nothing. I know that they do but just POSTING A VIDEO doesn't mean you know jack shit.
Also the owls YANKED the guy inside if you look at both cameras. He literally poked his head in for a second to look and got snatched in. So clearly the poster DOESN'T have all the details considering they've labeled it otherwise.
