- Crested geckos and gargoyle geckos both make great pets. That's why they were both on our video about the Top 5 Pet Reptiles For Beginners. Ever since we made that video, people have been asking which of these two New Caledonian geckos is the best pet? Had this debate with myself a year ago and then got my gargoyle. He's wonderful.
Same
Same!
Cool! Now to gety parents to understand that they won't grow 10 feet long 😂
Same but then when I’d decided to get a garg I ended up with one that is a bad eater even after months of me trying and have traded it to a breeder friend who’s got it eating a bit better for a leopard gecko but I might try again with a crested gecko in the future
Wow just noticed that.. likely a failed attempt at New Caledonia pine trees ? An easy fix they should do; just narrow out the trunks!
One other thing to add in favor of the gargoyle gecko is because of their less sticky feet they can be less uncomfortable for sensitive people to handle. I have autism and I had the opportunity to handle a friend's crested gecko and it was actually kind of painful when it walked on my arm and when I had to pick it up, pulling its feet gently off my hand, to return it. I knew I wanted a gargoyle gecko just because i like the look more and I wanted the regrowing tail, but when I finally got to meet one (that I later purchased), I found it didn't hurt at all to have them crawl around on me. It's always good to meet a representative of a species before you get one, or to choose between some, but if you are also sensitive you may want to test if crested geckos pull too much on your skin as they move and gargoyle geckos do not.
I'm autistic and thinking about this decision! Thank you so so much for letting me know about the possible sensory issue, will definitely factor that in and try to hold each before deciding if at all possible
that s not really a advantage tbh. could easily be a disadavantage for just as many people
I'm not autistic but I'm kinda sensitive to touch. This is good to know. Im new to reptiles, this isn't something I would've considered
On a similar texture note, tiny gecko claws can itch. When I was working with baby geckos, I thought I was allergic or there was some disease because when handling them, sometimes it itched terribly. Really it's just the little claws irritating the skin. If you're physically/mentally sensitive to texture, that's important to feel beforehand.
I wanted to add that I now have a bunch of different New Caledonian geckos (including Cresties because too many need homes) and update my experience. My Gargoyle gecko's feet are still a bit less sticky than my Crested Geckos or Chahoua Geckos. It might also be that, because my gargoyle gecko prefers to be on my clothing over bare skin, I notice it less, but I think it's generally less painful. And not all of my Cresties feel painful either, one almost never does. She's an unusual case though because she has growth issues/delays so that might be the reason. My Chameleon geckos are the least sticky feeling, I guess because they stay small, and never painful. They're basically teacup chahoua geckos so I highly recommend them too. I have a minor allergy to two of my three Chahoua Geckos, where I develop a mild rash wherever their feet touch. I'm also allergic to grass and it's a similar rash to when I accidentally sit in cut grass. So it would also be a good idea to check whether you're allergic to the animal by seeing if it irritates your skin (if you have sensitive skin in that way too). I used to only be sensitive to one, and I've never been sensitive to the third, so I'm not sure what I'm reacting to on their feet. I don't have live plants in their enclosures so it can't be that. They're all great but if touch/skin sensitivity is a big concern and you won't be able to handle the animal as an adult before purchase, I would get a Chameleon gecko over a Gargoyle and a Gargoyle over a Crested or Chahoua.
Bless you guys, this is exactly a debate I've been having with myself the last few days, trying to decide which I wanted to go with for a new vivarium. Your timing is stunning.
Hopefully this helps :)
Funny to hear, I just got the same decision to make
Here's my personal experience. I got a 3 year old crested gecko and a 1 year old gargoyle a few months ago. For me personally I wasn't happy with the gargoyle I got. He did eat like a beast but as far as for handling, well he just didn't have any "personality". He basically would just freeze as still as a statue when I handled him OR he would suddenly try and get away. As far as my crestie, he is active and definitely looks at you and doesn't sit still. He's much more fun to interact with. I wound up trading my Garg to a breeder for 2 crestie babies. One other thing that I particularly like about crested geckos is that they are great for gentle petting because their skin is so SOFT. LOL They are like velvet!
@@markadams5009 Thanks! I really appreciate your input. Firsthand experience always helps.
@@markadams5009 those kind of animals are not for handling, pls consider getting different pets like cats
I am desperately waiting for

Hey my room gets really hot during the day so do I still need a light?
@@darkmajesticduck5046 yes bro a uvb
@@darkmajesticduck5046 I personally don't give my crested geckos UVB or any type of light. They do get some light that comes in from a large window. As far as how hot your room gets, well I'd say that if it gets up in the mid eighty's than that's a little too hot and you would need to set your air conditioner at a lower temperature. I keep my room temp in the lower to upper seventies. It's quite HOT and very humid here where I live in Texas.
@Mark Adams ok thanks

Anytime I have a reptile or comparison question you always have a video ready!!! Thank you!!
The crestie at the end is a perfect representation of both my male crested geckos. I have found the males to be a bit more flighty than my females. But our subadult female that is from pangea is the calmest out of our 5 geckos.
Why is this channel so wholesome and positive? These videos always stick out in my recommended feed. Love these keep them up!
I’m getting my daughter a gargoyle. Now I’m getting the setup from Pangea. Thanks Clint!
I've been saving up for weeks. for a blue-tongued skink. my parents approve now all I have to do is work enough money for the enclosure, the food, the lizard. It wouldn't have ever happened if it wasn't for you. I was blessed by God to come across your videos. I love you💓💕 never stop doing your dream.

Dear Clint's Reptiles, Thank you for continuing to make content. You are one of the things getting me through 2020.
Thanks for being the coolest reptile guy on TH-cam. I've been thinking about getting a lizard for the last year. This video helped me decide the Gargoyle Gecko is right for me. In A few days I get to pick up my Gecko, my first reptile.

Thanks for replying,I haven’t watched this channel in a bit,but I saw crested geckos and then remembered alll your series, great to be back
Well, clearly I now have no choice but to go scoop my little gargoyle up and tell him he's the winner of a fierce competition. Maybe I'll even let him sit on the Grunkle Stan funko pop he loves as a reward.
This man did a 5 minute ad in the video. He is IN HIS BAG
When I first saw this video, I thought that they must have accidentally uploaded an old one. Then I remembered that I've never seen this video, and they filmed this in the reptile room, so WHY HAD THIS NOT BEEN MADE BEFORE!?!
All very valid thoughts indeed!
I agree with Clint valid points Newt !
I love how happy he is talking about the geckos lol
I actually think the frog butt cresties are extra cute 🥰 that, combined with those giant round peepers... so adorable 😍
They are less stressful to handle if nothing else :)
What the heck
Hi Clint! I know this H2H involves cresties, but I’m curious if in a future H2H you might consider Mourning Geckos vs. Crested Geckos? Care-wise they seem surprisingly similar (minus size) and they’re both so awesome in their own ways I can never decide on a favourite. I’d love to hear your takes on them!
Gargoyles aren't available here, so that took care of the decision making 😂 love my two cresties, they're so different.
The more videos I watch, the more I want a crested gecko lol
I would like to say a big thank you to clint for his crested gecko videos. as of last week, I bought a crested gecko and I can't say how my of help your videos have been.
Gargoyles for sure! I’ve had mine for three years now, and she is amazing!
Four years late but this is the first sponsor i didnt skip because it was actually enjoyable to watch
Watching this today, and I’ve had my free Gecko for over 10 years now (he’s 13). They gave me an extremely healthy patternless Dalmatian who wasn’t too flighty and has been a part of the family for all this time and is still going strong today! He only very recently dropped his tail to a visiting dog that stared at him the wrong way for too long.
The fact that they sent the enclosure first and gave me time to set it up before sending him was absolutely wonderful. They really do care that you are prepared before getting your animals instead of the typical situation that is reversed.
Thank you Pangea!
I’ve been wanting to get a gargoyle gecko real bad and you just come in with a video on them and introduce me to all the stuff Pangea has. Thanks a million Clint.
Pangea is a GREAT company!
Mark Adams I was looking at their website and you can get a free crestie if you buy that kit Clint showed. Pretty awesome stuff
@@jacknotnimblejackbethicc4908 Yes, I saw that as well. Although I definitely don't need another tank. Another option to consider is reptile expos near you. HERPS is a good one that has several locations and show dates. The next one that is close to me is like a month away. I've seen baby cresties go as low as $30 to $40 at expos. I've also seen some babies around $100 for nicer morphs/colors. I like expos because there are so many animals to look at. I've definitely ordered lots of supplies from Pangea though and have always been extremely pleased with their quality and customer service, you definitely can't go wrong ordering from them.
15:06 you point at the wrong side lol 😂😂😂 We love you Clint! Actually, this is the best reptile channel in my opinion! From you I learned about the fascinating world of the reptiles! Keep calm!!!❤️🐍🦎
Headed to Repticon in Chattanooga shortly. My girlfriend (who used to be TERRIFIED of snakes), is so excited.
The closed captions on this vid are wild 😂
I’m getting a gargoyle for sure. I like that they can regrow their tail, and I am a fan of their orange and red colors and the lack of spikes. Can’t wait to get it. Just gotta get the wife on board
Thanks Clint, you sparked my love for geckos
I am getting crested gecko tomorrow. I found them because of your videos. Thank you. 😊

Where is the '' 'cause you woldn't wanna own it if it wasn't stinkin' awesome'' part?
I think they're both really cool but Gargoyle's have such nice bright colours typically.
The fig and insect mix is really good for my geckos, they LOVE it. Plus it smells really good tbh
So excited to see this video! Just turned a family friend to the dark side earlier this week and they’re looking into crested geckos for whenever the next local expo will be (most likely next Spring). Appearance-wise, I’m in love with Cresties and I’ll choose them any day, but Gargoyles are amazing animal as well. So glad to see both species getting some love.
After purchasing a chameleon gecko two weeks ago I then purchased a crested gecko this week, New Caledonian geckos are absolutely awesome!
Clint, check out the Strophurus geckos, they are super cool geckos!
I agree!
Clint, we need a Leachianus taming and handling guideline for the leachie community, I feel we need more light on those awesome animals
Clint just keeps making videos I’ve been wishing he’d make. With this streak maybe we’ll get a lace monitor video 😏
i have learned so much watching Clint's firms, so i am perfectly happy to watch this whole commercial like video, and hope Clint can benefit more and more by doing things like this
I loved the video as well as all the videos you produce. Keep up the good work! To be honest, I had to do a double take when you didn’t say “cause you wouldn’t want it if it wasn’t stinkin’ awesome!”
Me too! What an egregious oversight on my part.
Excellent and awesome. Thanks, Pangea, for the code. The prices on their website are excellent. Have been enjoying the biodegradable food cups. Last for several days holding water, then I use for their food. Don’t get soggy.
Your videos are really awesome and helpful Clint
OMG look at their eyes. They look so cool
Hey, I would die if you did an episode on Rubber Boas. I don't know where else to ask!
I’ve been waiting for this my whole life 😳
I had this problem when I was getting a gecko. It got to the point where I put papers with "C" and "G" on them in a cup, shook it, and drew a paper. I ended up with crested gecko and now I have 2! Thinking about getting a garg too
I think I’ll get a crested gecko as my first reptile. I like their baggy pajamas.
That's more of a lechie
My partner and I have been planning to get one of each! He prefers the gargs, and I prefer cresties, and we figured having two lizards would be better than one anyway, so we both get what we want.
Do you keep them in separate enclosures?
@@Giobini Still don't have any, but we'd be keeping them in separate enclosures. Crested geckos and gargoyle geckos should always be housed with one gecko per enclosure (the exception being bringing one male and one female together temporarily for breeding). They're territorial and will kill each other.
I have a gargoyle and tbh the main reason was appearance. He was definitely more expensive to buy than a crestie, though! Also my vet (an exotics specialist) said they should have a basking light (15W CHE) even if your house is in the 70s, and having offered one, mine does bask and seems to move around to stay on the cool side on warm days and vice versa.
I adopted a Crested Gecko from a friend. She’s my very first gecko. Your channel was one of the first videos I watched. Since I love having my Crested Gecko, I'm really curious about Gargoyle Geckos now. 😁
Love it, thanks Clint and crew for another great video 💖🐢🐸🐊🐙🐍🐦🐛🐝
Of course :)
Thank you so much
I keep my crested gecko in a 18x18x25 bioactive and he really thrives in it! I’ve been thinking of getting a gargoyle but folks have told me they’re more destructive to plants and to use nothing but wood in the enclosure. Not sure if that’s true for all gargoyles, but I really wanted to set up another bioactive
Interesting.
I have one of each, Flokie my male rescue mission Gargoyle and Gex my female Crested. I love them so damn much, different personalities and preferences ❤
Great video. They are so cute! I was really excited to see that they have a Geckos for Teachers program that gives geckos to school classrooms.
He’s like a talking version of mr. bean
This guy said stinken rad soooo much😂
I have been using Pangea for Long time and they are amazing the packages always are in good condition
Great video!!! Congrats on getting 200k subs.
Thank you so much!
Clint, you are the best man. Thank you for all of the wonderful knowledge. Please get ahold of pbs and get a show. You should be on tv.
Awesome video. For years I have assisted my friend with his New Calidonian Geckos. I currently have 8 geckos myself now, some I am watching for a friend. 2 Leos, 2 Chewies, 2 Gargoyles, 1 Dalmatian Crested Gecko, and 1 beautiful Cresthoua Hybrid. I prefer the New Calidonian gecko over the Leos. I love both Gargoyles and Crested Geckos equally, I honestly don't know which I like better to be honest. My favourite is Chahoua Gecko but it was not in the head to head. I just love the way they curl their tail into a coil and when the light is on both of mine anyway stretch right out on a branch so are very viewable. I have found my gargoyle always find a log or something to hide in and my Cresty seems to move around throughout the day. Cresthoua really shares a mix of the Cresty and the Chahoua personality.
Edit
I have no experience with a Leachianus but would love to get one.
I would prefer a Gargoyle gecke, just because I think they are a little more beautiful. But both are cute.
I've been researching this as well. I'd love a gargoyle gecko, but they're just so expensive.
Aww i love the crestie was sleeping the whole time
They are nocturnal, it’s his naptime :3
Note to self, you need to get super famous on TH-cam so companies will start sending you free stuff including super adorable geckos! Lol. Seriously though, it looks like they sent you everything on their website. Lol
Him: They tend to not run very fast
My crested gecko: TO INFINITY AND BEOND!!!!!!!!
I have a nice story! So couple years back I really wanted a pet reptile. I spent 6 months doing tons of research to find the hardiest, cheapest and easiest to care for reptile species. I narrowed it down to cresteds and gargs, but finally decided that I liked the look of gargs and the regenerating tail much more. So, I was dead set on a Garg, and my family took a trip upstate to a reptile expo where I would try to look for my new friend. There were lots of great people there, including a man who had a bunch of crested geckos, all shapes sizes and colors, and his booth was right next to the booth of a couple baby gargs. My mom, who is typically pretty indifferent to reptiles, fell in LOVE with the cresteds. She practically begged me to get crested instead. I told her I knew what I wanted and I was determined to get the little boy Garg I had my eyes on. By the end of the day, we were bringing home a Gargoyle and a Crested and we loved them both very much!
Sadly the Crested died suddenly about a year later and we aren't sure what happened to her, but my Garg is doing very well to this day.
Cresteds and Gargs are both really great, I found that the cresteds have softer velvety skin so they're a little nicer to pet and hold, and ours at least was a much more agressive eater. When we gave them both banana, my Garg would gently lick at it, but the crested would bite and swallow chunks of it! 😂
Iv always wanted to start having reptiles but didn't know where to start by looks like I don't have to worry. What a awesome company
These are great choices as first reptiles.
No Clint's a little more nervous than Bob, especially in his iguana videos, and the varanids it's kinda funny 🙃
Rad review as always! Anniversary red striped gargoyle for my bioterrarium, it’s gonna be awesome seeing this baby this week.

Clint!! Nice shots and cool info. I’m having such a good morning because the video. Regards from México!
I'm so happy that we can brighten your day :)
Got an 18x18x18 exo Terra a few days ago, and was going to keep some inverts + plants there. And today - boooom! This video. Makes me sit down and rethink my plans. You know how to throw a spanner in the works, sir. 😉 🤩

Just wanted to say I was holding my leachie when watching the video and around when you were talking about breeding she made a giant leap at my face and her huge feet hit my glasses.
Fig and insects is by far my geckos favorite flavor. It's a different consistency, more sticky, they love it.
I couldn't decide so I got both and they're both amazing and easy to care for!
The crestie looks like my boy Harley, he's a very similarly colored harlequin. Would love a gargoyle next!
I have both. I gotta say I prefer crested geckos. I love them both and I think gargoyles are visually prettier however, the crested geckos that I have are way cooler personality wise.
Hi, thank you so much Clint for your wonderful videos. About to get my first lizard and thinking about a crested gecko. I was just wondering if the geckos from Pangea are all captive bred.
When i studied in a herp lab, i worked with both gargs and cresties, and I'm definitely biased toward gargoyles. Theyre just so cute, the color changes, the squishy round body shape...not to mention, the babies were pretty much always easier to handle than the cresties.
4:42 My one and only time handling a crested gecko so far, he leapt onto my face and I jumped about a foot. Really fun little creature.
Love this vid keep up the work
Thank you for this! I have a crestie and gargoyles caught my eye. Considering adding one to the family!
My Gargoyle gecko Louie and I take a happy smile to this video :)
Wait there’s garg/crestie hybrids? I know chewy/crestie hybrids exist but idk where I can find hybrids cuz I always have been fascinated by em but never can find one let alone adopt one
my brain tells me gargoyle is better while my soul tells me cresties.
I got a new leopard gecko and they’re amazing, sometime I wanna get a crestie but I doubt myself when it comes to taking care of them
Leopards are harder to care for than cresties. Needing frequent insects and uvb whereas cresteds don't need either
I've been looking forward to this
The Bob Ross of reptiles
Could you do a video on how to prep a good dubia colony?
Great head to head :) I got a Crested from Josh's Frogs after you did your video on their day geckos and I just adore him/her.
Quick Question: Can Gargoyle and Crested Geckos interbreed? Because I've been doing research recently and all anecdotal accounts I've read indicate that attempts to cross these specific New Caledonian geckos have either resulted in infertile eggs, birth defects, or have just generally been unsuccessful. I could totally be looking in the wrong places, but I know there are other crested hybrids (sarasinorum, chahoua, etc), and I have yet to find a gargoyle x crested.
I literally searched for this video yesterday... Did you read my search history or my brain??
Please please please oh please do a list on best geckos for beginners. I've never owned a gecko (nor any other reptile) but after watching your videos on mourning, leopard, gargoyle and crested geckos, I do feel like I might pick one of them up as a new pet.
Hello, I have a question if that's okay. I have a 3 year old crested gecko and I love him dearly but... he doesn't like fruits or the gecko diet. No matter what I try, he may give it one lick and leave it be. Sometimes I get the feeling he would rather starve than eat that. On the other hand, he LOVES crickets. If I'm somewhat near him with one, he jumps over to get it. So, now I feed the crickets with the gecko diet and fruits, so he at least gets it that way.
My question would be, should I be worried that he only eats crickets?
I love both these species!
