    A tip for using the silicone. If you’re trying to get a lot out for doing a background as apposed to a fine bead, if you cut the spout closer to you it will be easier to get a substantial amount out.

    I just set up my own paludarium for my starry night reed frogs, also from Josh's. Now I'm envious. I need to get them into a larger tank, and use less of a substrate base, more of a water base, like you did. I wanted the soil for additional plants/filtration, but now I'm second-guessing that.
    Great job!

    • @amandastakeonit7402

      Since TH-camrs rarely comment after the first bit that they release a video, and you seem to be someone to ask. Are these good beginner frogs? How about dart frogs? I know someone that wants to get little frogs, she mentioned dart frogs once I said that domestically bred darts have little to no poison since it's assumed to be mostly if not all attributed to their diet in the wild. Has Clint ever done a video on whether the darts or the SNR frogs are good pets, to your knowledge?

    • @NeverSolus
      @NeverSolus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amandastakeonit7402 I'm unaware if he's done a video. I can say Darts are easy and enjoyable pets, without hesitation. Feeding often and building a proper setup can be tricky, but if you do your research? Gold. Reed frogs are like a mix between
      tree frogs and dart frogs. They want a little of everything. So long as you can secure small feeder insects, and a proper (high humidity) setup with regular mistings I find them incredibly enjoyable.
      Of my Pixie, Pacman, darts, and reed, I enjoy the reeds the most to be honest. They are relaxing, their call is relaxing, and they are just beautiful little guys.

    • @NeverSolus
      @NeverSolus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, just realized I didn't really answer your question.
      I would say starry night reed frogs are good beginner frogs, provided you are familiar with how to set up a tank and keep humidity. Just beware their tiny size making escape a constant danger.

    About 15 or so years ago I built a 2' x 2' x 4' enclosure with complete 2' x 4'waterfall. Used PVC piping, great stuff,and metal screening,paint and aquarium sealant to seal the waterfall from top to bottom. The one side was the waterfall 2' x 4' with a reservoir at the bottom and sand box for Halloween crabs on the bottom. It was for my chameleon. Really fun to build, Cost about 250 to build. Top opened as well as 2' of the front.

  • @twitchiewitch1
    @twitchiewitch1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah I just made my 1st custom background for my T and yes, u have to lay the silicone on very thick then press it all in. I used an entire tube of silicone on a 10 gallon tank sized background and that was also with me going around many rocks I used. Just to give u an idea of how much you, or anyone needs. I also went thru an entire can of great stuff. Another tip... I built it all OUTSIDE of the tank, applying it to the correct measurement Styrofoam sheet that can then be siliconed to the back of enclosure when finished. This allowed me to make it 3D and avoid the ugly exposed sides of the layers showing thru the glass & all anyone can see on the back is the black backside of the Styrofoam sheet I used. I'm actually really proud of myself for my 1st attempt. I wanted it to look just like an exposed creekside bank, I used pieces of wild grapevine to look like exposed tree roots.

    When I built my most recent paludarium a couple of years ago, I stuck a piece of PVC pipe in the corner to run my pumps power cord through and then covered that and the background with expanding foam. I made a plug to go inside the pipe and match the background in order to prevent anything from getting inside the pipe (PVC Diameter only has to be big enough to retract the power cord through). Should you have a pump failure, It makes switching out pumps 100x easier. And everything is still hidden by the foam. I learned the hard way when the pump on one of my Paludariums had an internal failure and I had to tear out a large section of the background to get it out and the new one installed.

    So I've been wondering this for a while but haven't seen anyone discuss it - when people place live plants in those small holes, what happens when the plant grows? At a certain point won't there not be enough soil/space for its root system and growth? I'd be so appreciative of your advice! Loved watching this :)

    Clint: Remember to tuck your tie.
    Me (who owns exactly one tie and wore it once during the past 10 years): I'm gonna tuck my tie.

    This turned out beautiful, Clint! We've been wanting to do a paludarium, but so far we only keep dart frogs, which can't swim and would drown.
    What other frogs do you think would work for this kind of set up?

    The enclosure is beautiful! I am also dumb I somehow didn’t notice the frogs were even in the video. I walked away for about a second.

    Great video! You should add some weeping it pilo moss to the waterfall though, buces too. It would be neat to turn the waterfall into a garden of aquatic plants.

    For filling those gaps in an Exo Terra I prefer to use hot glue. I kept jumping spiders in a micro cage, and found the same issue as you did with escaping. Hot glue was the solution I fell in love with because you can pull it off later, but any animal small enough to use the gaps won't be strong enough to budge it. I've since used that enclosure for a few other setups, and have added and removed the hot glue as needed- looks like the day I bought it. Make sure to use a low temp glue and gun, and I recommend using colored glue if you're worried about it looking ugly. I used black hot glue one time and it looked like it was part of the lid after I smoothed it.

    I just did a similar thing for my Gargoyle Gecko enclosure. For the silicone I found using Mineral Spirits to thin down the silicone helped tremendously. It became a paint-like consistency and I just pained on the silicone then spread the substrate over it. Lots of fumes though so make sure you have ventilation.

    Good build. I’d recommend Aqua Forte landscaping foam instead though because it comes out of the can black. This might not sound a big deal but the white foam used here up against the glass on the sides is quite visually jarring and would drive me nuts.
