Before I watch the video, I’m going to say Cresties. My reasoning-
Crested geckos (Imo) are easier to care for, since they don’t need a horizontal tank, so it takes up less floor space. And they don’t need any special heating, unlike Leos.
They’re easier to feed. Pre-prepared diet, fruit, and occasionally some insects. Leos are completely insectivores.
Handleability might go to Leos, but it depends on the individual

    I own them both :D
Leopard Geckos can be left alone for a week that's a plus for me.
Crested geckos are a little bit more apartment friendly when you're in your twenties and live in a shared apartment in a city like me, it won't take up as much space.
Also, all of my room mates were a little skeptical about feeding live insects at first when I was gone, the powder diet is easier to manage. But I could always find a volunteer haha.
Also I like the leopard gecko's day night cycle better. You can catch them (in summer time) early in the morning (5 am) awake in their enclosure. At least one of my 2 geckos. So i could actually get up with my pet

I originally wanted a snake, but after my mother vetoed that idea, I started looking into geckos and 2 months later, I picked up Neo, my juvenile Crested! He is so much fun and still nervous when I initially take him out to handle, but once hes in my hands he is always on the move, crawling up my shirt/arms. He is amazing :D

      @TCShaddix001 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think the cresties are easier because you don't need the enclosure to be hot, and they do fine without uvb where the leos will die without it.

Try keeping a Leo with the right heat, right supplements, and kept on paper towels. Then dealing with impaction for no apparent reason. The warm belly baths, and belly massages are easy for me, because Bubba is a good boy, but he did squeak and chirp at me one bath.
I couldn't imagine others Leo's who are less fortunate to have such a tolerant boy.

    • @canadianlemon

@@TCShaddix001 Leos won't often die without UVB, though it is STRONGLY recommended for it's health benefits. Crested geckos are actually in the exact same boat with UVB lighting in that it was once considered optional- but is now a requirement for keeping one. I have both, and I absolutely adore the little quirks both have! My crested gecko, Ducky, has a routine of sticking her chin all the way up to the sky after licking up her food, which I adore seeing! On the other hand, my leopard gecko, Bumpy, will do the craziest things to get my attention, including screaming very loud once a night and stretching his head up to the tank door. They are both lovely creatures to be sharing my living space with!

My leopard figured out how to jump. Like, properly JUMP. Almost every night when we’ve gone to bed we hear a big commotion in her tank, inevitably go to check, and she’s balancing with her back legs standing on the door ledge, belly right against the glass, wondering what to do next. 😂
(And She’s actually in a tall tank- I got it secondhand so hey, if it had the floor space why not for that price- so that door ledge is a proper jump up for her too!)

A TIE ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I have both, but I could not decide either. Although I keep 3 Leopard Geckos, 2 Crested Geckos, and 1 Gargoyle gecko. The Crested Geckos do not like being held but allowing me to hold them while spraying down their enclosure (Spraying down the enclosure makes their feet slip and they accept my holding with an open hand as long as I place them on their ledge when I finish the spraying). The Gargoyle and Lepard Geckos accept me holding them, but only 1 leopard Gecko seems to enjoy it, the others accept it under their terms.
So in the end I am doing 1 worse, I give a 3-way tile to Gargolyl, Crested, and Leopard Geckos.

I chose leopard gecko. my reasoning: morphs colors are much more clean and bright, beautiful eyes (plus eyelids = less weird), not jumpy, dont loose tail easily. I knew i wanted some kind of bright green or orange lizard, unfortunately both of them cant be green, but leopards have the most awesome electric and blood morphs. Soooo last week i got one :) Although i love light coloured lily whites, and literally any green reptile :) Cons for both: source of food: you keep leopard you keep crickets or roaches, you keep cresties you keep buying special diet. Pros: You can be more self sufficient with leopards.

Mr. Adam, I had the same dilemma when I was trying to decide leopard v crested when I was getting my first gecko. I went with crested because I didn't like the chubby tail of the leopard. I liked the long thing tail of the crested. Also, I love how the crested can lick their own eyes. I found it fascinating and absolutely adorable to watch. I also wanted something more arboreal. There ya go. Crested wins. Of course, they are both adorable with their goofy smiles and 1/10 of 1 brain cell. There is no wrong answer. :) Thanks for the video!

For the temperature humidity part, I partly agree with you, but only because you live In a cold place, just like you said, adding humidity is easier than removing it, and that's the same with temperature, a person like you who lives in a cold environment might be luckier with cresties, but a person like me( I live in Italy) in the summer it gets really hot, and it's a pain to cool the enclosures down

One is arboreal the other terrestrial… my leopard gecko didnt get the memo it thinks it’s both. Ever since I put in a 3D rock background it’s been climbing up almost every night. Usually this at this time I handle it and let it climb my hands till it tires out, once I put it back in the tank it just chills in the basking spot lol.

Since this is not a year-round thing I took to placing damp towels across parts of the screen top. RH would pretty quickly get to 35-40 RH and my Leo would finally leave his humid hide. And then also misted the interior a time or two per day.

It's funny because I also live in southern Ontario and I find it hard to keep my African Fat-Tailed Gecko's humidity high enough without getting too high. I think it's because of the type of heating I use, which is a deep heat projector. It took awhile to get my crested gecko's humidity and temp right too, but now he's happy as a peach!
Edit: It took about a year before my crestie was consistently comfortable being active around me and being handled. I've only had my fat-tailed gecko for 5 months and she spends a week or so at a time hiding in her moist hide. I'm constantly trying to remind myself that it takes awhile for reptiles to warm up to people lol

Just wanted to add in here- for cresties humidity it is important to let the humidity drop to about 40-50% at times then have a spike at about 60-80% - You want about 12 hours with high humidity and 12 hours with lower humidity every day. If you keep it constantly at 60-80% the cresties will get a RI. Babies are way more sensitive to this than adults are in my experience.

I have both a leopard gecko and crested gecko. Both are very easy, even when you have a large collection. No one is easier than the other. No one is a better pet than the other. It just comes down to personal preference. Do you want a terrestrial gecko that likes it more dry or an arboreal gecko that likes it humid and cooler? Get what you. If you want a blue tongue or a beardy as your first reptile, do your research and go for it. Blue tongues and beardys are very similar but different as well. Like ball pythons and corn snakes.

I rescued a leopard gecko from a friend of a friend just over a year ago. I made a Serpa level bio active enclosure that I spent SO long on. I got the little guy and he does not one thing. He lives in his hides apart from eating. Can’t hunt for his life, and *refuses* to be handled. I love him so much, wouldn’t change a thing ❤

I'm actually planning on getting mourning geckos! I have done a lot of research and most of their care is almost identical to crested geckos. I'm super excited to set up a bioactive jungle terrarium for them! I know it's possible to do bioactive set ups for drier dwelling species like leopard geckos but it's just easier to find a clean up crew that can survive in a humid environment rather than an arid one.

Just be ready to find tons of eggs and house them. My mourning geckos multiplied into near 100 in less than a year. They are very cute to watch chirp and talk to each other though! Care is exactly like cresteds

My crestie seems to be missing something upstairs. She quit eating in a 18x18x24. I moved her to an 18x18x18 and she's done so much better and is back eating. I was saving that enclosure. But now I'll look for something to live in the 24 tall.

I feel like cresties are more popular.
At a local reptile show I volunteer with we have a vendor that is a gecko rescue. She sold 4 cresties and NO leopard geckos. She says she's over-run with leopard geckos.
I had a leopard gecko named Nessie. She was my very first pet reptile. After 9 years though she really wasn't getting the attention I knew she deserved because I've become more involved with reptiles and found I loved snakes more. So now Nessie lives with a friend of mine who I know will love her for the rest of her days.
Cresties are pretty cool. New Caledonian geckos in general are just awesome.

It feels illegal to be this early- but this is so interesting. The differences between the two goes much farther beyond arboreal and not. I do think (personally) setups for cresties are more difficult to set up, just because of the fact that they need such a thick “jungle”.

Could you do a video about the Rankins dragon? A bearded dragon in a small package. I've got 2 of them as my first lizards (I do have 28 years of experience with pond sliders) and they are super cute. Its like having a mini Diamond. :)

I own a leopard gecko and a crested gecko. They're both adorable and I find they're pretty equal in terms of care difficulty. I love how interactive my leopard gecko is, as she will come investigate whatever I'm doing if I'm near the terrarium, and she also "asks" to be let out daily by waiting at the door of her tank and climbing into my hands herself once the door is opened. That being said, my leo is 5 years old whereas my crestie is just a baby so the interaction level or handability may change :)
Overall, I do love both species. I think the deal breaker between them really comes down to the space required for the terrarium and your tolerance for bugs. When I was planning to get another reptile, I ultimately chose a crested gecko because they don't need the horizontal space.

11:14 this makes me laugh because I got bitten by one of the crested geckos at college (I’m not sure what I did wrong, but he’s known for being a bit grumpy. He had to come out because we were cleaning his enclosure) and I was more offended than anything. I called my parents (because I like updating them how my day’s going) they were so worried, it was very funny

I don't have either yet but I think I want a leopard gecko a bit more, they're adorable and sometimes misting setups can be difficult to setup and maintain, but also I feel like if you look at some cresties the wrong way they drop their tails xD (obviously this depends a lot on how they're handled and acclimated to people but still, haha)

It’s hard to compare these 2 geckos, but I love the video. Everytime you talk about a cresties or cresties like gecko leachie which is what I really want but size price tag, since I am not a breeder it wouldn’t be ideal to purchase one since they don’t produce that many babies and there is still a lot of demand but not a lot of stock available and the same trouble with cresties stops me, I think I’d like a crestie again. But neither probably would be good for me. I don’t have an easy source of live feeders for a Leo. I could do the prepared diet for a crestie my millipede already is eating this stuff so I already buy it. My problem would be heat and a crestie. I am in Arizona but I am in between Flagstaff and Phoenix no extremes of either, snow maybe lasted 2 days 3 or so in the shade, but my summer for 3 or 4 weeks my inside the house temps can reach 100+ degrees, I have no cooler, my snakes are fine I turn off their heaters in summer and they have a temperature flux all day cool nights and a couple hours hot in the later afternoon and comfortable the rest of the day. Fans help move the air around. I don’t think a crestie would be good for this. 😢 I have 2 tanks that would be good for a Leo, it’s 30wx16hx12 deep. But I think I’ll look for an antaresia and or western hog instead. I wish I could have a crestie, I’d have to figure out how to cool it in summer first and get a higher climbing tank. I could do live bugs when I go into town once a month as occasional treats and just get the foods with the powdered bugs for most of the time. My crestie I did have like fresh strawberries, I would give him mushy ones, and mushy blueberries. Not rotten just extra soft.

They’re solitary animals and don’t benefit from it. They’re very likely to compete for resources, which could escalate to fighting. It can be done successfully in a very large enclosure, but most people do it in an enclosure that’s too small to ethically cohab, unfortunately.

A taller enclosure (90 cm) for a crested gecko allows for a better gradient in temperature and humidity, and makes it much easier to get the parameters right, compared to the 'recommended minimum' of 60 cm tall enclosures. Just... give the crested gecko more space than the bare minimum, people.

I absolutely love my leopard gecko though. Only one of my reptiles that has 'bit' me, but that was when she first came home, so my own fault as she was just defending herself against this strange being she didn't really know. Completely different now. Bar the scratches I got on my forehead a few weeks back when my head seemed to disappear as she was exploring up there, she's my sweet princess Indi now 😊

I enjoy crested geckos much more than leopard geckos, mostly because they can be fed the powdered diet more often than needing live insects all the time. And thanks for mentioning my home state Adam! I’m from Phoenix, Arizona and I have one crested gecko named Spyro. Right now he’s at my parents house because I have to get an emotional support animal letter from my psychiatrist that allows me to take him to my apartment because my apartment sadly has a no pets policy.
