ABANDONED Chevelle will it RUN AND DRIVE 600 Miles Home?

- I take a 1200 Mile Road Trip for a 1966 Chevelle Rescue. I put together a 355 small block chevy with some parts laying around the garage. I loaded that up and drove it to North Dakota, where I purchased this 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle site unseen. I spent weekend putting in the motor and transmission - then attempt a first start with the new engine followed by the long ride home alone!

Thanks that was a great video I really enjoyed it I know what you mean about them radiators not cooling down that Motors hell they didn't want to cool down the straight six back then straight face telling it like it is I loved it you are definitely Discovery Channel material look forward to your next show
Thanks for watching Paul - really appreciate your support!
Way better discovery channel they rulen things
Buyer dropped it there
Discovery would ruin everything with their same-as-always formats and scripted blather to camera.
I agree. why dont you have a produced show and big paychecks? You deserve it
Who’s here in 2023 because of your love for Derek and wanting to see his humble beginnings? And also cause for some reason YT recommended it randomly
Me and during the video one of his o’reilly commercials popped up 😂
I'm here watching all his previous videos. I've only been watching this channel for a couple months. I really like this channel.
@@mickeyhulk6790The concept is so wholesome!
I really like the background music on this one. I wish I could download a sound track of that band...
Dec 12, 2023 watching this gem. A rare thing Derek didn't have a hat on while changing the oil
Watching this for the first time after watching recent episodes, a guy can see how you’ve grown as a TH-cam star.
Yeah, his voice changed.
lol all those gas station nachos
I prefer his old videos. More authentic.
Would you be able to find me something
Just amazing how different these old videos are compared to the new stuff. Derek is a totally different person!
Right? I was a little shook when I heard him say a tent full of piss. 😅
Yeah he's put on weight and matured alot.
those videos were pre mullet.
I like the older videos much better. Much more relatable. Don't really watch the new stuff anymore unless it is a revive and drive. Not into anything else. If you are sitting on a million or more dollars, you can go out and buy anything you want.
Yeah, I kinda miss the PG-13 Napoleon Dynamite version of Derek.
Here I am stuck in an office job tinkering on my vehicles when I get the chance - and you're out there doing the stuff I dream about and rescuing America's history. Good on you man!!
Thanks Clive

I never did pay for motor trend on demand, this is my favorite new channel!
You rock!!🤘
Who needs to pay for the Motor Trend channel now that we have found Vice Grip Garage. Between this channel and Scott at Cold War Motors I have all the old car stuff I need. But lest we forget, Emily over at Flying Sparks Garage is really fun to watch as well.
Thank you
Yep. I agree. These feel more personal anyway, because they are.
@anonymous Mortske and Duff aren't bad just not as entertaining.
Just rewatched this one again. Man you've come a long way but still close to your roots. Best channel by far!
Yep i do the same thing rewatching
And....... Same lol
I just watched because the car looked cool
I recognize his brother's garage in Stanley, NoDak from future vids
And again....
That's the nice thing about discovering VGG about 2 or 3 months ago is not only do I have an immense backlog to catch up on but I can see Derek get more and more comfortable in his videos as he goes along.
It’s funny watching your older videos when you were a little shy and not as confident, you’ve come a long way! Love your videos.
^^^^ I second that
You've completely embraced everything that was roadkill in the beginning.. And everything that made it great before they sold out. Good for you sir! Sub'd!
Thanks Pat, appreciate the support!
I subbed on the FIRST episode. Well, that I saw that is.The Dodge in the car wash.
You are 1000% correct. This is true hot rodding. Not what RK became.
@The Great Cornholio Finnegan on RK wants it back on TH-cam, they were forced to sell out without losing their show, which is their passion. watch Finnegan's garage on TH-cam, you'll see he still has that drive
@The Great Cornholio sold out? how so? TH-cam was paying them money to do the show, they started to cut off the money so they found sponsors. when the money completely shut off they went behind the pay wall so they could afford to produce the show.
One benefit of the camera flipping upside down is you got to see how good that headliner looks!
9/20/23 looking back at this feller. Makes a guy feel awesome knowin hes been a legend since day 1. Ik its not the very first vid but close enough.
I've seen your brother in a couple of your videos. He seems to be very consistent in having zero F$%KS to give.
I love it.
Yeah Chris' enthusiasm for what Derek was doing was.... palpable.
A guys come along way over the last few years! Love the channel and it’s fun to go back and watch these older vlogs
Agreed, I'm dealing with stroke related issues and found VGG a nice diversion.
I stepped back in time to view this and see your point totally.
Happy Motoring while you can, as things in years down the road don't look to positive for the older carburated engines.
'LET'S GO BRANDON!'
“It doesn’t have an engine I’ll make one real quick” I love vgg for a reason
🤣🤣
I say the same thing when I find an old bike that needs a motor
@@ViceGripGarage Would have been nice to see him work on the engine. But this is an older video, his newer ones go into more detail and it's appreciated.
I love catching up on these older videos. Great Job.
Wow looking at this old vid of yours compared to the basic "I'll be dipped" ones now is night and day. You have vastly improved.
Gotta say, vice grip garage is the best car show channel on youtube..
Great camera work all the time.
And best content, even when its about something small. Very entertaining.. Id like to see this on 7 channels on tv.. Its got what it takes. Come on people . Share the shit out of this channel .. God bless you all :)
Back when Derek had time to answer questions. Come a long way since here Derek.
Congrats on your success and I wish you plenty more.
I like the old ones more.
I love coming back to old VGG videos. It's been long enough now that I'm happy to watch them all.over again. Thanks YT for the recommendation!!!😊
Wow. I've been watching your channel for several years now and seeing this old video really shows how far you've come and how different you and the videos are!
I have been an old - cheap, needs work - car guy since I bought my old 1949 Buick Super just after I got out of the Army in 1971 for $50...(Drove it for 2 or 3 years, sold it for $200.) I really enjoy watching your impossible rescues. Whatever else you do, keep going.
Wow, Derrick and the channel have come a long way in a little under 3 years. Good to see Chris is exactly the same.
It's amazing seeing the difference between the old videos and new videos....
Had to come back and rewatch a vintage episode. Good times!
At just under three years later, this is definitely a change from the Independence Chevelle. Your videography skills have improved, as has your stage presence (that's not denigrating the early skills. Just that you're better now). Now I just have to find out what you do with this one. (Unless this becomes the 70 Chevelle in later videos)
I like this stuff a lot. Not that independence isn't a sweet build. But this grassroots hot rodding spirit is very relatable
The TH-cams just put this on my "Hey, wanna watch this video?" list despite having watched at least 2.75 times with the first being nearly 4 years ago plus the rest of the videos I've already watched...
...make that at least 3.75 times now... Give or take .25. Really awesome to see these old gems again! You've really come a long way in such a short amount of time, but still stuck true to yourself, which is what kept this feller hooked in. Great job!
Derek, I occasionally like to go back and look at these older videos that I missed before joining the channel. You were more nervous back then but still very cool!
You definitely are a great mechanic, but a better wordsmith..and thanks for mentioning of Service Folks who have served and are serving..
🇺🇸👍 thank you sir!!
Vice Grip Garage I watch the videos with the captions on, even more funner
This would be interesting to see 😂😂
@@ViceGripGarage so glad I found your channel. You are a flipping blast to watch. Make it so much fun for a novice like me to learn about wrenching. Thank you sir.
thanks for watching buddy!
It's amazed to know people have so much valuable stuff still laying around for you to do your own projects.
I seem to have decent luck finding gems here and there 👌
The success Derek and vicegripgarage has had since these early days is fantastic.
It's cool to watch this video after watching you for years and seeing how a guy hasn't changed a bit. That is one thing about you that keeps me coming back and I'm sure I can speak for others when I say, thank you Derek. Thank you for all of this great content.
Derrick’s numbers are always spot on and completely accurate ... where can anyone go wrong!
Your brother Chris is the star of your show. A man of many words made me laugh when you try to get him to smile. Well done on the rebuild sir. All the best from UK
Thank you sir! Sometime he'll mutter something
@@ViceGripGarage To you knowledge, has he ever been in a bar fight? He looks totally BAD-ASS 😎
C E yes it's amazing Derek can still speak after the lessons I'm sure Chris gave him from time to time over the years...The silent types find other ways to express themselves...Derek has a slightly different personality when he is working with his brother😬
@@carlthomas3074 The farm truck episode they are talking about him. "Is he filming this?"
I think Derek and his brother should do stand up comedy.Biggest duo since Lewis and Martin.
Car is 57 years old school American muscle 💪 very great job 👍👍👍👍👍 getting it running good to see you two working together
Hank 3 playing in the background while working with what you got to put a chevelle together for a 600 mile road trip in a day is legendary stuff
Derek, these "roots" videos are so great, please do more. Keeping it simple, honest, and real. That is what makes you great. Thank you for all that you do, you make my week, every week. Oh and yeah, Dawn is great for hair, lemon works best. Been there.
Don't move the beer bottle on the fender.....work around it. I love it!!!
😂...👍
His brother didn't look happy when Derek was talking about the water pump😊 was a great video.
Just discovered your channel. My wife and I enjoy the hell out of your videos!
"Cousin or Nephew, whatever the hell you are ?" LMFAO !!!!
Just working my way through watching all your videos again, a fella does miss these original style episodes!
Love coming back to watch these old ones!
The comic relief from Chris is "GOLD"
Absolutely love your channels and have been watching for about 3 years. Appreciate where you’re at now , yet happy there is so much content to catch up on

I watch and like every thing I see from this fella. Now is 2023. What a guy after my own personality! Very much appreciate all the content! Much love for the him, his family and all you folks watching!
love going back and watching theses old videos still
Still watch the oldies and goodies so much love for this channel congratulations Derek and Jessica y'all sure earned and deserve the best of the best!
On every one of these videos I'm expecting Red Green to walk in and say "how's it going Son" to Derek.
This was probably my most favorite yet! I love it when u do these!!your awesome. Love seeing your brother Chris. Cool cool video I enjoyed it much
Watched this video 5 years ago and re watched it today (August 2023). A short haired, less heavy, and younger looking version of the car guy we all have grown to love. It was fun to look back and realize how the Vice Grip Garage shtick has developed through the years. VGG is now a professional entertainment and instructional podcast that has continued to increase it's appeal by allowing the lovable screwball host that endeared us to the channel remain as its foundational anchor.
I am 58yo, this model was my first car, my uncle gave it to me and my brother. We had a lot of fun putting that car back on the road back in 1977-1978.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS, THEY BRING BACK ALL THOSE OLD MEMORIES
Loved the “ rear cooling” comment and the headliner also, perfect!
👍👍
Great car! I loved the "just let me throw together an engine out of spare parts" approach! LOL
Finally watched an older vid. How polished you’ve become. And the old one is good to don’t get me wrong. Just cool to see the difference..! Very cool
Wow
Love the sound, straight body & transmission didn’t grenade.
Congratulations! You are the first 1 on earth to destroke a 383 to a 355. Cheers.
I know, right? 😂
Didnt want that extra 30 cu.in to blow out her rear end.
I physically gasped when he said that...
Love watching your old stuff, you put out great content, it's so cool that we can all see how you started VGG. Hope to meet you at an event some day!
Ya know, these best of Derek\classic Derek Videos are worth money!
Just from 2 years look at how much you have come up now good job brother 🤘♥️⚡⚡
I love the upside down driving segment, great special effects.
haha... thanks!! 🥴
Somehow, I missed this one a few years ago. I'd almost forgotten how different things were. It was good then and it's good now.
That cam thump 😍
The reason you run hot is serpentine fan turning backwards. You need v-belt fan so it turns in right direction.
It also could really use a fan shroud.
Oh damn! Never thought about this as an issue before! Yes the other guy said shroud would help for sure and I was thinking electrical digical fans but he does need a V-* 4 core anyway... plenty out there for big block Malibus would cool this small block easy.
@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS I put one in my small block el camino. It takes a long time to warm up when you watch the gauges. It has senders in the intake and driver's side head. Problem is the holes in the small block shroud don't line up with the big block radiator cover so I had to use zip ties. And my soldering iron melted a divot into it.

Make sure lower hose has a spring in it. If not make one from a coat hanger. Without spring the hose collapses under acceleration.
Good point!
damn he was in really great shape a few too many cold snacks :P
That's something about this channel that appeals to those like me that are amazed at the insane auto market. 10 year car loans, manufacturers artificially limiting supply, and being forced to buy expensive, complicated electric cars in the future are all realities. It all makes a feller long for the simplicity of the older rigs.
Working on watching every single episode.... best show on the webs...
So.. A guy has watched everyone of your videos at least 17 and a half times. Great videos. I look forward to the next video.
Man, after watching this again, it almost looked like you had working air in that ol burb. Love it.
Great music to go along with the repower on the pretty decent 66, nothing a good shake down run won't kick the cob webs loose on the old girl.
Cars like this is why I love my car hauler. This car has potential. Great video thanks for sharing..
Absolutely thanks for watching. Hope I got your subscribe!
Love this channel. Kinda seems like you're beard grew an inch between the first two scenes. I'm impressed.
Dang look how young VGG is in this video.
This popped up in my recommended. So why not rewatch.
Gosh.. I didn't realize how long I have been watching VGG.. that said.. other than a more fuller beard not much has changed which is why it's been such a successful run.
Man, Loving your work. Your humor keeps me coming back. I'm rebuilding a Falcon in Australia and i love the way you get things done.
He does good work when not goofing off.
The song everyone has been asking about is "we were cheerleaders" by Alchemy
Thanks Man! It sounds better in your video! HaHa.

in your description, you list it as a different song
Them old 3 speeds are tougher than nails, I run one behind a 70 c10 for years with a 383 stroker and towed up to 8000 pounds, never had an issue.
I thought I had watched every video and just stumbled across this. Wow you have come a long way. Proud of you brother quality content from beginning to wherever you do end
Derek looked way different 4 years ago. I always liked these because they looked like a smaller version of my 66 4dr Belair. As much as I love a SBC; the straight sixes were great.
I happen to love a 4.3 V6 as well. They are torquey as hell.

Love all the Hanks!!!
I love watching the early VGG videos. It’s neat to see how far a feller has come from his humble beginnings to his humble present-ings? Is that a word? I don’t know! He’s come a long way is what I’m trying to say. 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Awesome song!
You should invest in a battery impact and ratchet. I’ve been turning wrenches for about 20 yrs and I love the snap on ones that I have both at home and at the shop. Also a fan shroud would make an enormous difference.
Ha, this classic popped up in my feed today. I loved it so long ago and still do. You've changed Derek
Just came across this. My first car in 1974 was a '66 Chevelle as well! It was also engineless but was a marina blue SS two door & had a Muncie M-22 rockcrusher & 4:88 12 bolt in her as bought. I was 16 at the time & built my first small block to bring her back to life. Fastest I could cruise in her was 50mph with that low rear, LoL. I bought new NOS chrome from the dealer for her & had her repainted. I remember problems as well with the positive starter cable melting from the header heat, ha-ha. Wish I still had her.
In my Neck of the Woods, Demolition Derbies Make use of all the Good Body Older Cars, I have seen some used in these events that were Collector Cars--back in 1980 at one Derby, a 74. Rocket 350 Olds. Cutlass was used that was Better than the one that I was Driving...
Hey Randy! I've seen some video's of some awesome cars in derbys. I get it though, guy just didn't know back then what they'd be today 👌🤷♂️
SERIOUSLY ! THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE TREE SHIFT
