Who needs to pay for the Motor Trend channel now that we have found Vice Grip Garage. Between this channel and Scott at Cold War Motors I have all the old car stuff I need. But lest we forget, Emily over at Flying Sparks Garage is really fun to watch as well.

That's the nice thing about discovering VGG about 2 or 3 months ago is not only do I have an immense backlog to catch up on but I can see Derek get more and more comfortable in his videos as he goes along.

At just under three years later, this is definitely a change from the Independence Chevelle. Your videography skills have improved, as has your stage presence (that's not denigrating the early skills. Just that you're better now). Now I just have to find out what you do with this one. (Unless this becomes the 70 Chevelle in later videos)
The TH-cams just put this on my "Hey, wanna watch this video?" list despite having watched at least 2.75 times with the first being nearly 4 years ago plus the rest of the videos I've already watched... ...make that at least 3.75 times now... Give or take .25. Really awesome to see these old gems again! You've really come a long way in such a short amount of time, but still stuck true to yourself, which is what kept this feller hooked in. nice ride, I had a 64 velle 300. paid 100.00 for it and the body was straight, I put a 283 in it that i rebuilt it by myself, *my first*. nice ride. that 66 is nice.

Derek, I occasionally like to go back and look at these older videos that I missed before joining the channel. You were more nervous back then but still very cool!
I like coming back and watching the old eps. He gave me a lot of inspiration to work on the cars I have. Early shows were all about budget builds. I revived a 63 Dodge 880 that sat for 30 years just by watching his vids and getting idea's. Today I pulled the 46 Dodge out of the storage shed and got that going. Like to see him do a show of setting lifters for the old flatheads.
Derek may have put on a few pounds, but he is the same guy now that he was six years ago. His video production has sure evolved. That last part about "a big thanks to my cousin or nephew or whatever the hell you are" is just priceless.
Oh damn! Never thought about this as an issue before! Yes the other guy said shroud would help for sure and I was thinking electrical digical fans but he does need a V-* 4 core anyway... plenty out there for big block Malibus would cool this small block easy.
@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS I put one in my small block el camino. It takes a long time to warm up when you watch the gauges. It has senders in the intake and driver's side head. Problem is the holes in the small block shroud don't line up with the big block radiator cover so I had to use zip ties. And my soldering iron melted a divot into it.
You should invest in a battery impact and ratchet. I’ve been turning wrenches for about 20 yrs and I love the snap on ones that I have both at home and at the shop. Also a fan shroud would make an enormous difference.
Watched this video 5 years ago and re watched it today (August 2023). A short haired, less heavy, and younger looking version of the car guy we all have grown to love. It was fun to look back and realize how the Vice Grip Garage shtick has developed through the years. VGG is now a professional entertainment and instructional podcast that has continued to increase it's appeal by allowing the lovable screwball host that endeared us to the channel remain as its foundational anchor.
Derek looked way different 4 years ago. I always liked these because they looked like a smaller version of my 66 4dr Belair. As much as I love a SBC; the straight sixes were great. I happen to love a 4.3 V6 as well. They are torquey as hell.
Dang, it's a stick shift car! There's a bonus! I had to convert my grandmother's 66 two door 300 model to 4 speed and dropped a .040" over 427 I built into it. Basically a 390 hp 427 engine. Runs faster now that it will stop. Got the parts to fix that but haven't had the time.
In my Neck of the Woods, Demolition Derbies Make use of all the Good Body Older Cars, I have seen some used in these events that were Collector Cars--back in 1980 at one Derby, a 74. Rocket 350 Olds. Cutlass was used that was Better than the one that I was Driving...

Just came across this. My first car in 1974 was a '66 Chevelle as well! It was also engineless but was a marina blue SS two door & had a Muncie M-22 rockcrusher & 4:88 12 bolt in her as bought. I was 16 at the time & built my first small block to bring her back to life. Fastest I could cruise in her was 50mph with that low rear, LoL. I bought new NOS chrome from the dealer for her & had her repainted. I remember problems as well with the positive starter cable melting from the header heat, ha-ha. Wish I still had her.

Long story short, I NEED TO RECREATE THAT DRIVETRAIN!!!!!! IF YOU KNOW OF ANY 1973 SB 400 WITH 4.125 STROKE, WITH NO CRACK'S, PLEASE MESSAGE ME? GOOD STUFF BRO!!!
Hey, appreciate that! Thanks for watching and supporting. In regards to the 400, they're great motors. They all have a standard 4.125 bore, the stock stroke with factory crank is around 3.75. Just have to be a little careful when boring them out. Sounds like a rad Z28! I think I have a 400 laying in the shed - but shipping will kill us unless you're from Minnesota. Have you looked through Craigslist and Facebook marketplace?

hi Derek been watching for a few years now but missed this one watching this episode in July 2023 , just watched the68 firebird at the show you put a motor and trans in very similar job to this one , funny to watch this when i'm use to your usual production ' glad you got rid of the heavy metal overlay and i noticed your brother has cheered up since this episode ' looks like this rescue went quicker than the firebird at the show albiet your using stock parts ' cheers to the years since then and now
One thing that has worked for me in the past when the engine runs hot .As crazy as it seems i turn the heater controls to hot and turn the fan on full blast . It provides another way to cool the engine coolant. And of course you have to open the windows on the vehicle.

Make sure lower hose has a spring in it. If not make one from a coat hanger. Without spring the hose collapses under acceleration.

The reason you run hot is serpentine fan turning backwards. You need v-belt fan so it turns in right direction.
It also could really use a fan shroud.

Just came across this. My first car in 1974 was a '66 Chevelle as well! It was also engineless but was a marina blue SS two door & had a Muncie M-22 rockcrusher & 4:88 12 bolt in her as bought. I was 16 at the time & built my first small block to bring her back to life. Fastest I could cruise in her was 50mph with that low rear, LoL. I bought new NOS chrome from the dealer for her & had her repainted. I remember problems as well with the positive starter cable melting from the header heat, ha-ha. Wish I still had her.

Brother had one that was bored .030 over, utilizing a stroker kit, forged, internally balanced crank, amber lightweight pistons 11/1 compression, the lift & duration -idk/ had it all written down but but, don't have that notebook anymore! it was a circle track/offroad cam from summit, aftermarket aluminum heads 202/160, roller rockers, msd ignition, Holley 750 dbl pumper w/manual seconsaries, th-400 w/new valve body, B & M shift kit, 3,500 stall conv, 373 gears in a mint 79 Z-28 BUILT BY A LOCAL MACHINE SHOP & MAN DID SHE RUN!!! 1/8 MILE BEAST!!! Long story short, I NEED TO RECREATE THAT DRIVETRAIN!!!!!! IF YOU KNOW OF ANY 1973 SB 400 WITH 4.125 STROKE, WITH NO CRACK'S, PLEASE MESSAGE ME? GOOD STUFF BRO!!!
Hey, appreciate that! Thanks for watching and supporting. In regards to the 400, they're great motors. They all have a standard 4.125 bore, the stock stroke with factory crank is around 3.75. Just have to be a little careful when boring them out. Sounds like a rad Z28! I think I have a 400 laying in the shed - but shipping will kill us unless you're from Minnesota. Have you looked through Craigslist and Facebook marketplace?

hi Derek been watching for a few years now but missed this one watching this episode in July 2023 , just watched the68 firebird at the show you put a motor and trans in very similar job to this one , funny to watch this when i'm use to your usual production ' glad you got rid of the heavy metal overlay and i noticed your brother has cheered up since this episode ' looks like this rescue went quicker than the firebird at the show albiet your using stock parts ' cheers to the years since then and now

Them old 3 speeds are tougher than nails, I run one behind a 70 c10 for years with a 383 stroker and towed up to 8000 pounds, never had an issue.

One thing that has worked for me in the past when the engine runs hot .As crazy as it seems i turn the heater controls to hot and turn the fan on full blast . It provides another way to cool the engine coolant. And of course you have to open the windows on the vehicle.
