Me too. I can't drive because of health reasons but I admit I do like these car videos. It really takes talent to work on cars (especially these days with all the electronics involved). Derick really has that talent and I think his laid back persona really helps him in some of these situations.
When I tore down the 318 from my 69 fury, I thought I was going in for a re-ring and valve grind. She was a little rough and smokey but still started well didn't knock and made decent power. What I found was 7 cracked pistons, 3 burnt valves, a cam gear with more than half of the plastic teeth completely gone, and an oil pump completely full of muck and ground up engine guts. Once I spent way more money and time than I wanted to, I got her back together but it just would not run. Took days to figure out the distributor spins "backward". My mom still has a picture of me grinning like an idiot surrounded by that first start smoke cloud. That engine taught me a thing or two about life and such..

I loved my walk home when my old 1984 charger's timing belt snapped while waiting for a train to pass by in North Minneapolis. Walked home, grabbed my 87 Celebrity drove back to my charger and pushed it 10 miles home with my Chevy Celeb.
In the early 90s working way out of state I bought a 79 Magnum XE GT for $200 at an impound lot to get me home. I probably spent another $200 in normal wear items and fluid changes and drove that car all over the Eastern US with the only problem being a flat tire. Four friends and I decided one evening to go from the coast of North Carolina to an hour West of Chicago to pick my girlfriend's brother up and drop someone off and we averaged 82mph. Such a comfortable highway cruiser that got taken by the hurricane that hit a week after getting back or I'd still have it. I even worked for Dodge later on hoping to get another and I'm working on getting a 79 300 now.

Man this hit me right in the heart... my dad had a 74 Plymouth duster.. it was brown.. i got the car in my teens as my first.. It was a slant 6.. and stayed that way.. No mods it was all original.. When you said the duster you got wasn't running i said can't be.. Engine wise... You can't kill a duster.. Everything else will go.. but the engine will always be a runner.. And she started and ran .... She's running!!! Electrical seemed to be an issue with these dusters as they get older.. I had all kinds of electrical problems with my duster in the end just before i turned her in to the big car yard in car heaven.. i junked the car because the tranny went on it.. I actually have dreams i get the duster back and i drive her again.. My dad called our duster baby.. Because he babied her and she needed to be babied to keep it on the road.. Maybe with all that care and attention your duster needs.......
I had a couple of these in my youth (16 - 19) first was a slant 6, the other was the 318. 3 speed manual. Man, that thing screamed going down the freeway just to do 55! but yes, I remember those cavernous vents. I hid a box of 36 condoms in there. never used a one. Guess I was more sure of myself than I should have been. Pretty sure I forgot they were in there when I sold the car.
Vice Grip Garage I’ve been doin that since way back when I subscribed an ya never let me down 👍 if I could I’d hit like now for the next video already lol 😂👌

My first new car was the twin sister to this, a 1974 Dodge Dart Sport. Blue w/blue interior and white Vinyl top and manual sunroof . 318/automatic. The fold down rear seat allowed me to visit camp sites and sleep 2 comfortably. Ran and drove super. Trans went out at 34k miles, otherwise was perfect for 60k miles. Forced to trade in on a 1980 Ford Fairmont station wagon (total POS) due to my newborn son. I miss the Dart to this day.
I grew up in Southern MN. My duster was same color. Mine had a lot of rust in the underbody. Black Vinyl interior was mint. It had so much potential. Wish I still had my 71.
A trick the old man told me about with carburetors, when the jets are stopped up. When you get it running drop a 1/2 cup of 30w down the throat and immediately cover the barrels, the excessive vacuum will suck all the crud out of the jets.
"Lots of smoke from .... under the bonnet here!" This channel is so entertaining - I'm more of a bike than a car person but these junk starter-upper videos are addictive viewing!
Was a 4door ordinary 1970/1971 slant six Valliant tho, nothing duster, but yeah makes me remember "Dual" too for some reason. I think it's just the front of the Valliant, Ply used about everything on everything like all GM & Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth inter-exchangable everythingy adabtable applicators.... But I'll ignore it and pretend i didn't know that. I watched "Dual" (1971) for 8 million eleventeen.2 times approximately. Can't get enuff of it. Sir Steven Spielsomething's debut masterpiece. the thing about this car is you can look cool driving it in any condition because they're so iconic. I had one with a 318, and I modified it
Since a guy only recently found yer channel, I'm gunna go ahead and like and watch every dang video I can with some wobbly pops.
It seems to me that you’ve already named it, Two Pumps.
Excellent !
Smallblockfuelie that would just confuse the wife 😂😂
I Second the name Two Pumps!
@@baloneyjusticecheezedog Or maybe just Chump! But now we're back to confusing the wife again...
That's my old high school Nick name
Dude I found you yesterday on TH-cam and I freaking love your stuff. Like 12/9. It's a fraction
😂😂.. thanks man
That MOPAR starter whine - aahh the sounds of my youth.
It gives me the warm fuzzier.
Known in Chrysler circles as the "Hamtramck Hummingbird."
Watching you wrestle with ol' Two Pumps brings back lots of memories. Thanks for that.
I can’t watch while my wife is sleeping this had to be the funniest yet.
Dust in time
I remember duster's and dart's had a air vent hatch we used to keep beers in. Stayed nice and cold in the Winter
Nice lol. I wish I had come up in that era
A guy needs to give the video a thumbs up befo’ he sees the thing because he knows it’s gonna be good!
Thank you Danny
Vice Grip Garage I’ve been doin that since way back when I subscribed an ya never let me down 👍 if I could I’d hit like now for the next video already lol 😂👌
Watching this for the second time. I'm a Mopar guy but more than that I am a Derek fan!! Love this episode!
Thank You, I thought I was the only one who Bitched about tangled cords. Now I know we all feel the same...
I’d love to see some interviews of this guys neighbors on what they think of his car collection 😹
Me too lol.
I would imagine they all know what he's all about, and a decent guy 😁
A guy gets on with his neighbours because A guy helps them out with their sparkerlators 😂
@@compostcorner5934 Or, "Harry, that guy across the street is making all that noise with his junky old cars again. All day long, vrooom, vroom, vroom... Tell him to stop it or we'll call the police."
@@sportsmediaamerica 😂. Yep it could be one or the other lol
@@sportsmediaamerica lets ask the guy... Hey Derek, how do you get on with the neighbours 😁
What a perfectly lovely treasure of videos I stumbled upon here. Never change nothing please.
“Dust Pan “. . I had a 71 and a 73 . I enjoyed this vid . I was there.
Haha, I had a 74 DustPan and a 75 Gold Dumpster
How about "Ruster"
Wishing that I had a feller like you for a neighbor. Love the daily driver.
318 c.i equals 600 waffles in Canadian. I almost split my cold snack laughing so hard. 👍🏻
needs a timing chain and carb rebuild
We can't afford waffles up here, that's crazy talk!
😂
I always gotta watch this one every 3-4 months. Always reminds me things could be worse, plus it’s some of your best work. Still BRING’N THE THUNDER!
Really enjoying these. I'm old enough to remember when Dusters were new!
They finally would not replace the starter on my sisters new Duster after they replaced it 3 times
I live in Canada and I have an 87 ramcharger with a 318 hahaha. I’m so glad I know how many waffles a 318 comes too
I imitate you whenever I am doing a project of any kind. My favorite, "get out of there" pops out all the time. You are so darn funny. Thank you for taking my mind off this upside down country. Good luck with Dusty, what a pos.
I second that name. Dusty us a fantastic choice.
When that quit on you on the way home I laughed so hard I almost started hyper ventilating! You are really fun too watch!
"Dirt Reynolds" , why? Primer black grill mustache & matching sideburns.
Taken....Rick Ness took it for his wash plant on Gold Rush
Dirt Reynolds sounds good
Sounded like burt reynolds laugh when trying to crank
@@markg.2501 didnt he shut that plant down?
@@Dapper422 Replaced it with " Monster Red"
The first time I’ve seen genuinely fear in his eyes was when he took that duster for a ride lol
I grew up in Southern MN. My duster was same color. Mine had a lot of rust in the underbody. Black Vinyl interior was mint. It had so much potential. Wish I still had my 71.
My daughter just walked in and asked me why I was watching myself. Lol
Haha
lmao
I’ll be dipped! A guy needs to stock back up on his cold snacks for Friday!
haha, see you soon daron
Amateur.
"Am I missin' lugs? Probably should have checked." Been there.
That's one of those cars were several people gave up, and everyone was almost finished until they didn't hook anything back up
When a guy must wait this long it must be a kick in the ass to get moving on some of his own projects!
great way to look at it!
This one reminds me of my late teen years when I had a 71 Dart and my girlfriend, now my wife, had a 73 Duster. Should have never sold those cars!
A trick the old man told me about with carburetors, when the jets are stopped up. When you get it running drop a 1/2 cup of 30w down the throat and immediately cover the barrels, the excessive vacuum will suck all the crud out of the jets.
"Lots of smoke from .... under the bonnet here!" This channel is so entertaining - I'm more of a bike than a car person but these junk starter-upper videos are addictive viewing!
thanks for watching
Panicked look on his face on the test drive was like Dennis Weaver in Duel.
I cant believe someone else remembers that film . nice
Remember it. I've got it on vhs!!
yea but me thinks this duster lost the duel lol
Ah! - Berg. Spielberg was a 25 yo film director at the time. But you don't need that.
I'm another one that has that movie on VHS the only problem is I don't have a VHS anymore
