I'm not one for comparisons, just one who enjoys brilliance. The emergence of Maradona was the most electrifying thing to happen to football for me. We had never seen anything like him at the time (being too young to remember Pele)

As a lifelong soccer player and fan since the early 80s I've seen all the highlights of all the giants countless times. I've always felt Maradona was the most gifted player (most natural talent) to ever touch a ball. I guess it's hard to define talent, but what I mean is that the ball seemed to belong to him more than it did to anyone else, as if he knew the ball better than anyone else, like it was a part of him more than anyone else. Watching him touch the ball, run with it, and play with it, was like watching a graceful cat run down its prey or watching water somehow find its way through cracks passing around corners and tight space with speed and grace. Even when he was falling it was like a ballet.
Messi or Pele are the other two that come to mind of course, but I think Messi wins over Pele. Messi has scored probably more solo dribbling goals than Maradona did, and more solo runs from half field which is amazing that anyone else could beat Maradona in that, and yet Messi's play has always looked a little robotic to me, a little more rigid and less graceful. Like somehow he tapped into what works to beat defenders better than anyone else, and yet doesn't have the same level of natural giftedness for ball control if that makes sense. Even if it makes sense, does that matter? I guess not in terms of end results, but there just seemed to be this magic that came from Maradona and his gait that I don't think anyone else can get close to.
For the longest time (probably until about 5 years ago) I said Maradona was the best player ever without hesitation, even during the height of the Messi hype. Now I hesitate and am not always sure if I can say that it's Maradona, but I still stick by my statement that he is without a doubt the greatest natural talent to have touched a ball. Talent doesn't always get you the furthest since there are always other factors at play. In this case, I still would probably vote Maradona as best footballer ever, but don't feel as strongly about my choice as I used to. Messi could easily be chosen. Pele or George Best rank third for me.

Now, watching his video footages after many many years, due to the emergence of internet, and realizing how great a player he was. It is hard to believe that he is gone too soon and is no more. Superb performance from the 19-year-old Maradona. Diego is the most skillful player I've ever seen, and that's coming from someone who's been watching football since the 1970s. Messi just doesn't have the touch, pitch presence, and aesthetic flair of Maradona. However, he's highly consistent within a more systemized, disciplined style of play. If I had to choose which one to watch, both at their very peaks, it's Diego all the way for me. Just an extraterrestrial manipulator of the ball. ⚽🌟 #FootballLegends

What makes Diego's mastery and genius more apparent is that the Austrian team was an amazing and talented side being, strong, skilled and strategic, yet maradona outplayed them and annihilated their defense. I waa born 1977, so only watched diego really properly from 1986 onwards, but his early footage is phenomenal. The 70s footage from Boca is pure genius.

As a Dutch youngster I started to watch football at a very young age in 1978. We had to play Osterreich in Argentina and while we beat them they were indeed excellent. Koncilia, Prohaska, Jara. The guys seen here were very good. Argentina also had good players, Luque as we see here was also great and Diego was coming. They also played at the mundialito against NL and Maradona was unstoppable. What happened were a lot of fouls which is a red line throughout is his career. You see refs were very easy on defenders. I have never ever seen someone getting kicked so much and brutally as MAradona yet he rarely whined about it and even tried to go on whenever possible. Whjich made him all the more exciting. Since a freekick just slows down matches but with him, even very severe fouls did make him stop and so by continuing the pace went up. Because of this, really being close to unstoppable he created chances for his team and prevented the other team to organise themselves. With Messi and others their roling over the floor even when barely a thing happens this means they slow down an attack. Hoping for a card or something, not hoping to make a decisive goal by pulling on. That is a big difference and again: due to this very frequent behaviour of MAradona he also became more exciting.

He's one of the greatest goal scorers of any era. There are several issues to have in mind, the way Maradona treated the ball, the several ways of shooting the ball, the rest of his team mates weren't the Barcelona of Messi, all kinds of kicks and fouls he received. Don't forget his double fracture of both bones of his leg... and the list is huge...his dribbling plus his explotion was unique too... Just watch for archive videos and you will get crazy about him. Messi played in a time that defenders cant sneeze in front of forwards and glass type ground. Also Diego is the only one ever one bet for his team even against an alien team. In Pressure Messi is not half player he was. Always the comfort zone,, depressed in tough games..surrounded by legends he can do things,if not nothing. Today's defence does not allow any advancement in the center. It's all flanks. Maradona would practically be a Latin American story only in today's game. His most famous performances were against tactically weak defencing sides. Messi, for example, played against best of the best and left everyone in awe. There is much more physicality in today's football too, it's just not cruelty, but precisely physical defence.

For me Maradona and Ronaldinho had a gift for the unexpected that no other human in the history of this sport ever had. I can't argue who the greatest player in history is and there are so many aspects of the game but for me Football is a spectacle and I've never see anyone put a show like those two could. When they took the ball you could never guess what is next no script. Ronaldo, CR7 Messi, Mbappe, Haland... you know what they can do and for the most part they do it anyway and thatts their greatness. When you saw messi running down the band with the ball you knew he was going to cut to the inside... the defenders knew it too and piled up but he'd still do it no matter how many players were there and that's crazy but not suprising. When Dinho or Maradona came running down the bands you just didn't know what's next. Their imagination was just so far out and incomprehensible. You could argue who was better who won more and whos the greatest for all eternity but you won't find more entertaining football than Maradona and Dinho. PS - I never saw Pele play... only the Reels and it looks like he fall under their category but its a shame there are so few videos to whatch of him.

With Maradona came up e restart. Nothing was comparable to that was before. A great luck having be lived that time to be testimonial as a similar old guy. I have read his book: "Yo soy el Diego" original written in Spanish, my favorite language.

@@arielhectormeza4079 En ese partido el negro, Maradona, hace una jugada similar, pero, en vez de dársela a Ischia patea al arco.

Such a good game... Austria's goal was superb! Fun fact:
100 meters to this stadium Ernst Happel Stadium in Praterstern, there is a Napoliten Pizza shop called Maradona which was not existed at the very day of this match.
