    This is the best method! You will really get to see how your derailler will angle out.

    Thank you, helped me replace my derailleur thanks to your video. However left my deraileur/chain a little slacker. I would have liked to see a clearer view of how you fixed the master chain link.I will add one in due course.

    If you’re just replacing your chain without changing the gears, you can just cut your new chain to the length of the old chain side by side. Many times, when people measure how much chains they need to cut, they could cut too much and it behaves differently to the old setup.

      I've been riding for a while and have always had some chain slap on rough terrain. I just figured that's just the way it is. Finally decided to see if I could do anything about it. Turns out my chain was too long and poorly tensioned. It had even been replaced before by my local bike shop during a tune up, with no change in behavior before/after. They must have copied the length of the old chain assuming it was fine (as did I until I finally investigated it). It is pretty fair to assume that if it's working fine as is, it makes complete sense to just copy the chain length.

    it does matter how you install the master link, that is why they have a direction arrow...

    For anyone reading this.
    He says back off a couple links for full suspension because because you length from the bottom bracket to the axle will change, become larger through the travel.
    You can air down your suspension and use a tape measure to tell.

    I have got to agree with you 100% although i have a question . why are you the only bike mechanic that breaks and adds only 1 space and every other bike mechanic adds 2 then joins ? I am asking about hardail mtb .chain breaking and joining thankyou sir. your method is for me perfect GRACIAS Lol.

      This is too late of a reply to be helpful, but he is adding a master link. Some chains don't use a masterlink, some do. If you do add a masterlink that's one extra link you need to account for. So instead of leaving two links you leave one.

  • @justhikeit
    @justhikeit ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video but you failed to mention one thing which is what if the new chain is too short like it is on 9 cog bikes or 27 speeds. You need to buy 2 chains and put them together with pins or quick links to make one chain. All chains sold are too short to go around most if not all 27 speed bikes. You get one chain for the price of two since the new chain is about 6 inches too short.

  • @SharonD369
    @SharonD369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That’s not the way you should be sizing your chain, you should put the chain around big / big only and add 2 outer and two inner for hard tail. You don’t put the chain through the derailleur until you have the plus inner and outer, you’ll never get the chain right like that me ol China.

    • @HoneyBeesUK
      @HoneyBeesUK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found this video better than the others I looked at. Can you make it clearer what you mean by "adding 2 outer and two inner" is there a video please, Many thanks? I used this video to setup my moutain/off road bike but with a little bit more slack in the chain/derailleur.

    • @SharonD369
      @SharonD369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HoneyBeesUK , To size a chain properly you should put the chain round your biggest rear and biggest front ( not using derailleur ), then pull the chain together so there’s no slack. Where the end of the chain finishes you should add four pins which will be 2 outer link and 2 inner link, if the end of the chain starts in between a link you should start from the pin that’s in front. If you ride a full suspension bike you add two pins one outer one inner.

      You got chains for 6/7/8 speed (number of gears) and others im still learning to but thats what i have come a cross with. Worst case go to a bike shop they will answer any questions you may have. With the virus you might have to just call since they can only have so many people in the store and technically shouldn't be open
