    I was fortunate enough to make friends with Jessie Colter. She loved my dog and would come into my store to see the great Irish wolfhound and get his hugs. When I told her how special Willie and Waylon had an effect on me as a young teenager in Nashville, she brought me Waylon’s entire works as a gift. I’ve still got a photo of her, my hound and me in my store. She would tell me stories that would curl your hair and the love she had for him. God bless all three of you and Mickey Raphael for giving me my first harp lesson and telling me what books to buy. I love you all!

      Don’t fret too much over it, Henry. Country music is a big pendulum that swings back-and-forth. Remember all the strings on the late 70s music? Then came the new traditional movement with Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, and Reba. It has already happened many times, and it will do it again. 😊

    When I was a teenager growing up in the 70s, sure, I listened to rock and roll, but Willie and Waylon were definitely in the mix of my favorite music. I don't listen to rock, much, anymore. But,I still listen to W&W, and will till the day I die.

      I was a kid in the 70s, and loved "Outlaw" country. My favorite group when I was 8 was actually KISS, but I couldn't help myself from loving Waylon and Willie. Get those two together, and you can't help but feel good. My family is from Colorado and Texas, so that Cowboy thing is in my blood or something.

    I remember playing Dice with Waylon,when I was 12. The game was called Horse,and it was at a tavern.My Dad was in the managers office arranging his and my Mom's set schedule. You had this big leather cup with dice inside. You turned it upside down on the bar,and read out the points. I'm 64 now,so it was a long time ago,but i still can remember it well.He's still deep in my heart. :}

      That cup was called the "pill bottle" in my parts. There was a local bar where they bet on literally anything. I saw two old guys betting on Jeopardy on the tv above the bar one day. The bartender always gave you the choice to pay cash for your beer or grab the pill bottle. Food, cigarettes, any and everything that bar had you could bet on to get. Those were the good old days.

    In the early/mid 70s i was all about the Outlaw Movement and lived accordingly in every way! There was no music but Waylon, Billy Joe Shaver & Willy… Bar None! Im the only 70 year old in my neighborhood who still jacks up my truck’s speakers with Honkey Tonk Hero’s and Waylons rowdier hard driving stuff at nearly full blast while I’m messing around out in the yard! Nobody ever asks me to turn it down a few clicks! I guess they like it too….or not? When Waylon got sick and lost all the weight, it literally broke my heart, i knew just by looking at him!!! After all… Me, Waylon & Jack Danials went through my divorce together in the traditional Outlaw kind of way! ….i still miss Waylon to this Day! Seems just knowing he was on the planet with his Band made things a heck of a lot better for most of us!

    Lest anyone forget: Waylon and Willie were there at the beginning of what would become Rock n Roll. Willie wrote songs for Patsy and Waylon was in Buddy Holly’s band. I don’t believe they get as much credit as they deserve for their contributions and influence on Music in general and not just the Country Western side of things. Attitude was 100% Rock N Roll!!!

    • @dalesinclair7299
      @dalesinclair7299 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree 100% , I listened to them and really hard and southern rock , especially when I was partying which was way more often than not. I listened to it together and loved it all , they deserve way more than they get . In those days a lot of different kinds of music could be put together in one bag and then just play em as they came out , wow what a ride

    • @STETTRACE
      @STETTRACE 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dale Sinclair I hear you my friend. I turned 16 in ‘87. So I had the heavy metal thing mixed in with this and the southern rock stuff. I got lucky, my parents had an amazing record collection. My mom would follow the trends and my dad would have the purest of what was available. It was a good mix.

    • @STETTRACE
      @STETTRACE 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dale Sinclair But... LOL I WILL admit most of the 80’s and a good part of the 90’s are still a bit.....blurry? Yeah that’s the word lol. But the music is so timeless. It’s always there just the way it’s always been.

    • @michaelclark9762
      @michaelclark9762 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Waylon was a fill-in bass player on Buddy Holly's 1959 tour. Willie was a member of Ray Price's road band. Then Faron Young had a huge hit with Hello Walls in early 1961 before Patsy Cline agreed to record Crazy (which has nothing to do with Rock & Roll).
      The beginning of what would become Rock & Roll happened in the early 1950s in New Orleans (Fats Domino, Earl Palmer, Little Richard), St. Louis (Ike & Tina Turner, Chuck Berry), and then in the mid-1950s Memphis (Sun Records with Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley).

      The biggest problem in country music today was laid out In Shooter Jennings song "Outlaw You." The suits in Nashville have co-opted the outlaw movement and repackaged it. Now there's all these family friendly, radio safe "outlaws." Most of these guys claiming to be outlaws in Nashville wouldn't know outlaw if it whipped their ass. If you're looking for real musical outlaws, check the Red Dirt Country and Alt Country scenes.

    I thank my entire family for raising me on classic country. In the 70s and 80s it was "today's" country music. My mom and her siblings/extended family lived and breathed country music! I had 2 uncles who separately played in country bands around our small town. I was exposed to alot of "pickin an grinnin" Many summer nights would be spent at my aunts house with big picnics...... my uncles and other musicians in town would gather and it was country music and BEER 😜 In my family country music blared at home on the radio or in the car. As a child i must have sucked it all up like a sponge because there isnt a classic country song that i dont know. My mom and aunts are amazed because they cant recall as much as i can. We watched Hee Haw every Saturday night and that must be where i picked up the artists names and how they look. I was born in 70....so i was fairly young. I bet a friend one time that the classic country music channel cannot play a song i wont know.......i won! 😇

    My mom would go and see Waylon at bars around Arizona in the 60s. I last saw Waylon play in Del Mar ca. in the 80s. I had a sign that said "honkytonk hero's", at the start of his on core he walked out and pointed right at me, then started playing Honkytonk Hero's, I think I gushed like a little girl, probably. I just really looked up to the man because he was "tough" and didn't take no crap from anybody.. God bless Waylon Jennings and Jesse - son

    What a fantastic documentary. I came up with those giys on the 70's loving contemporary country music. I was in Vancouver Canada at the time and was ostresized for straying from folk and rock n roll. Well - l didn't stray from anything, l just liked lots of different kinds of music is all. R.I.P. Waylon & Willie--- two of the greatest singers, songwriters, & entertainers ever. Best of all, they never gave in to Institutional Conformity...they did it their way. R.I.P., Waylon...and keep on truckin', Willie. Kudos to Jessi as well...she never gave up on her man...and made a musical mark herself. To all three of them--- thanks so much for inspiration and electrifying memories.

    Legends they deserve to be.
    Mate I again have got to be one lucky man May be unbeknown to these guys they were getting more
    Exposure in Australia than in the States but incredibly they didn't know ,Because I grew up in Australia and to me they were always both champions .I'm watching this and nearly disbelieving that

    Really appreciate that you stuck it out this is Country Gold to me and it's good to see their total history.

    In the early 70's I was driving a truck and willie and waylon started taking over the real music we all wanted. I remember One time telling my brother the radios are going to start playing more and more of their music or the people will change stations. Sure enough it seems like very other song was one of theirs and I never knew another driver that didn't listen to their music and love it. I never knew Waylon was having money troubles and I dont think a lot of truckers did either, we all just loved their sound.
    I heard a lot of talk back then wondering how such an ugly guy got such a beautiful woman. I never really paid any attention to Waylons looks. It seemed to me like all the women were crazy about him back then, I dont know if it was his music or his looks.
    I think when we lost Waylon we lost someone special in country music. Even today Willie is still coming out with great songs, and when we loose him another great will be lost. I dont enjoy the present "country" music like I did Waylon and Willie's. It seemed like I could relate to their music and this stuff today bores me. Maybe it is just me!

    Waylon was a great guy. I worked as a an audio engineer at the WWVA Wheeling WV Jamboree USA live radio broadcast of a live show in a beautiful theatre for 25 years and 10 years before that as the lighting director. Waylon came once a year. this show was second only to the opery as the second longest live show broadcast on the radio in the USA. Waylon would talk to any one. He wasn't an asshole to any one that I had seen in my days in the country music industry and Willie was even more so the same way.

      My Dad was a DJ and we had Waylon over to the house for dinner several times. Waylon and Jessie were standup faithful God fearing People that were down to Earth and you'd never know they were at all famous. I didn't know they were stars for 2 years after I met them.
      Waylon and Jessie are the type of people God wanted America to be filled with.

    Those were great times, and this film just reinforces those memories. I was working the overnights and if it was "outlaw" music, I was playing it; much to the dismay of the program director. Just a few short years later I would wind up working for a major entertainment group who would ultimately change Nashville. Those 20 years were one hell of a ride; never to be duplicated again.
