The title says it all, nice dudes! Altaf showed Chris SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004), directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It's a classic film Chris has been yelled at a lot to watch, and it was an honor for Altaf to show it to him for the first time!

The world's end is actually my favorite of the three. It just feels like a perfect culmination of everything that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright were working for. All three of them are 100% worth watching again with director commentary, or even better at least the first two on DVD had a trivia track that you could put on as basically subtitles that would point out various bits of trivia about the movie, so all the little things that you don't catch until like the 7th time would be brought to your attention

It's an inside joke between the crew.
Pegg frost and Wright made a tv show called spaced. In that show the main characters dog runs away from home with the owner (played by Yvonne's actress) calling it from the bedroom window which was on the 3rd floor.
Apparently after about 20 takes they just couldn't get the dog to look up to her in the window but it would always turn around and face the right direction.
So someone asked "can dogs look up"? And it sort of became a running joke on set and they referenced it in this and in hot fuzz I think

One of my favorite moments of the movie is when Ed and Shaun are arguing with Pete. As Pete walks away, Ed says "Next time I see him, he's dead...". And then the next time Ed sees him, it's when he's already turned into a zombie. It's a really subtle and very clever use of foreshadowing/callbacks.

Another little british joke in this movie that I didn't see you guys call out (i might have missed it) - every so often Nick Frost's character gets a phone call from someone looking for a "henry" 15:40. Henry is a british term meaning an eighth of weed - i.e. henry the eighth. So somewhere in the apocalypse there is an unseen stoner group who haven't left the house who are still trying to pick up some weed. Americans love that every time I point it out, they generally dont get it and move on.
"Do you have a henry mate?"

Easy to miss, but Shaun's friend who was leading the other survivor group they run into was named Yvonne, theoretically leaving the door open for her own spin-off film called Yvonne of the Dead (though it was never officially announced and the cast has long since moved on to other things). The actress, Jessica Hynes, was Simon Pegg's writing partner and co-lead in Spaced, which is really excellent and should totally be watched (and has an episode themed around Resident Evil 2 which is basically the spiritual predecessor to this movie).

I've seen 'Shaun of The Dead' once before, but on watching this again, I've just realised that at 20:31, during the Mexican standoff scene where Simon Pegg's character is wearing a red bandana and has blood running down the side of his face, it is a homage to the Russian roulette scene in the 'The Deer Hunter' where Christopher Walken is similarly attired and also in a life-or-death situaition involving guns. The team who made Shaun are fans of classic movies, and it's fun to try to spot the references to those classics they put in their own.

0:59 There's a funny reference to Night of the Living Dead that you didn't mention. In an early scene in the original NotLD a brother and sister are visiting a grave in a cemetery. They used to come out there as children and the place still makes her nervous just like it scared her back then. Her brother teases her by saying "They're coming to get you Barbara" (and then a zombie appears). In Shaun of the Dead, once Shaun and Ed realize what's going on, Shaun calls his mom (whose name is Barbara) on the phone. She tells him that people have been trying to get into the house. Shaun tells her that he will come over, then ED yells into the phone "We're coming to get you Barbara!"

Chris Martin from Coldplay has two cameos in the film. He plays a zombie out side the pub at the end. But yeah this is one of the best written films you will ever see. Nothing is wasted at all, it's tight and to the point with no filler scenes. Even the flowers play a role in the plot. The zombie plague/infection has already started before the film begins. So many little things like radio broadcast, news papers and small things in the shot all point to it but we don't take it in because Shaun doesn't. As for Shaun going from life hitting him in the face to grabbing life by the balls is one hell of a character development. I love this trilogy so much and they took everything they learnt from Shaun of the Dead and took it to another level with Hot Fuzz. They don't make them like this anymore which is very sad.

As backstory: Simon Pegg's first big thing was Spaced, co-starring Nick Frost (ed) and Jessica Hynes (the random girl he meets occasionaly). Also up and coming actors aplenty including Michael Smiley (cameo drummer 15:30). Same generation included Martin Freeman, Matt Lucas, Tamsin Gregg who all got cameos

I love movies like this. So much detail, so entertaining, it warrants multiple watches. You see new things too. Like... after many re-watches, I only just now noticed that Pete's right half is discolored. I thought it was just a lighting thing. Maybe it's got something to do with him standing in the shower for too long.

Hey, I know this was done a while back, and you probably already know, but you mentioned how Simon Pegg commits himself to the whole zombie genre, so I thought you'd like to know that he and the producer of the Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and At World's End) did a cameo AS ZOMBIES for a brief scene in George Romero's Land of the Dead! It's the part near the beginning where the woman is having her picture taken with chained zombies.

    • @NiceDudeMovieNight
      @NiceDudeMovieNight  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Wow! It must’ve been awesome for Pegg to be in a Romero movie. Especially since he’s such a fan himself

There are a lot of callbacks to the TV series Spaced too, the cyclist zombie with the headphones is a character from that TV show, a courier called "Tyres" (I think that was his name). There are so many discreet jokes and Easter eggs in all the Cornetto Trilogy movies you really need to watch them all (and Spaced) to fully get it.

  • @petermchugh3829

As a previous commenter mentioned, Tyres is from Simon Pegg's series, Spaced. In fact, the woman Simon Pegg bumps into both before and after the Apocalypse, was his co-star in Spaced and there are a few other actors/characters from Spaced sprinkled throughout the movie.
