Good lord. This movie stressed us out in the best way possible. Enjoy our first time watching reaction to Office Space, directed and written by Mike Judge and starring Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, Stephen Root, and Gary Cole!

Fun fact: this movie got red staplers on the market, got a number of restaurant chains to stop requiring pins and buttons, AND got America to look at TPS reports and realize just how terrible the current setup was.
TPS reports have changed a lot over the years, all thanks to this movie.

I mean I have had my share of pointless paperwork, so I can totally relate to the joke. I just assumed they made up the name for the movie.

@@ElderonAnalas Test Procedure Specification report. It's literally just a report that lists out the procedures you use when testing something. They're important in software engineering because they clarify the exact process you went through for testing a piece of code, which helps any other software engineer that might need to work on or test the code know what you did, how you did it, and so on. TPS reports themselves are pretty useful, but the process has absolutely been streamlined since the days of floppy disks and dial-up internet.
Fun fact: the entire Tchotchkes restaurant thing was riffing on TGI Fridays which basically had a similar flair policy at the time. About 4 years after Office Space came out, they got rid of the policy because so many people were coming in and making fun of it, referencing Office Space

Well those were just people who could express themselves with the bare minimum, and that's fine, but some people like to do more, and they encourage that.

24:20 I think you missed the joke that Peter was trying everything to get the letter back from under the door, which was unlocked the whole time.
One thing I just realized watching this; when Tom is arguing that his job as the go-between for the clients and the software engineers? Speaking as someone who's in software development and testing: that's actually a really important job! You need someone who understands how to take what the client wants and turn it into something that the engineers understand, and likewise you need someone who can take the questions from the engineers and turn them into something the client (who doesn't understand software dev) can understand. Basically, he's a project manager.
But since the Bobs don't think in terms of the needs of the process, just in terms of cost (plus Tom not explaining himself well due to understandable panic), they just see him as someone's who's just carrying a piece of paper across the room. They don't actually care about what the workers need, they're just trying to "save costs" without actually knowing how things work.
well said - My job is like 60% co-ordination of emerging issues - I need to be that translator. This job is essential to ensuring smooth running of everything else!
I do a similar thing in security. Essentially I'm a glorified translator between the complaining party and the management. I take the verbal abuse, filter it down to the actual problem, convey only the root issue.
Yeah, it sure seems like Initech was a year or two away from folding due to mismanagement anyway.
@@Chasmodius You dream... I worked in computer industry, and most of the companies I've been working for have HUGE mismanagement... But they are mastodons and still alive... Ubisoft being one of them...
Yeah the idea of a client directly interacting with software engineers is bonkers. Most of the guys I know in that job would immediately quit if that ever happened :P
A good business is like a RPG, and the front facing "faces" tank the clients so that the heavy hitting engineers can actually get things done.
Office Space isn't a comedy, it's a documentary. I worked that job for many years and saw everything from the movie. Including embezzlement and arson.
Fun fact, when this was released Swingline didn't make a red stapler. But after a while hearing daily requests for one they finally caved and made it. It was their best selling stapler ever.
That is true for another Mike Judge film, Idiocracy.

There is a little caveat to the Red Stapler story.
So after the movie, many requests came in and Swingline ignored them as the stapler was discontinued (or didn't exist, I think they painted the stapler and it was originally black), now one of the reps came in and was like,
Rep: Hey, we got any of those red staplers people keep asking for them all the time.
Higher Up: Nay its just some silly thing in some movie, we get these requests all the time, just ignore them.
Rep: *Stares incredulously at the Higher Up*
Higher Up: What?
Rep: Okay so let me get this straight, we make staplers, like run of the mill anyone can get anywhere staplers right... In a market where there are literally hundreds of other companies making them and we can't patent or control who makes them right?
Higher Up: Uh, yeah, but I mean-
Rep: Now we have a generic product anyone can get, but we have HUNDRDS of SPECIFIC Requests, for a RED version of what we already make and they want it from us coz WE ARE Swingline... and your saying, argh, I am so unhappy our customers are DEMANDING something we can easily make and SUPPLY... and they will PAY FOR IT...
Higher Up: Well I mean.
Rep: Yeah I'm sure our company has no use to SUPPLY a product that is DEMANDED, literally the cornerstone of business and all that.
It was then the Higher Up realised he was a dumb a$$ f*ck and went to the board and bascially showed them over 3 thousand requests for Red Swingline Staplers.
The funny part, this is pretty much EXACTLY what the mvie was parodying, Higher Ups who LITERALLY Have one Job, Make sure Supply is provided for Demanded products and instead of seeing the LITERAL Definition of Good Business, they se it as a nuisance.
Fun fact: Swingline never made red staplers before this movie. After it came out and became a cult hit, there was a ton of demand and now it’s their best-selling stapler, by a wide margin.
Not just a demand, but Swingline discovered people were actually bootlegging them and reselling their products on eBay. They decided to get in on the market and it became a huge hit for the company.

Mike Judge has two cameos, as the restaurant boss and the brown-noser who's always nodding along with Lumbergh.
The funny part about the mistake they made with the computer virus is that if any of them had actually bothered to watch Superman 3, they would've known that Richard Pryor's character made the exact same mistake that caused the exact same problem. That whole subplot is just one large reference to Superman 3.
...did you miss the part at 15:38 where the characters literally say that the virus is from the plot of Superman 3? They had seen the movie and already knew about the mistake, they were just dumb lol, but it's obvious that it is all a Superman 3 reference given the characters themselves say so
The copier scene is still my favorite scene in the entire movie, the music and the fact its shot like an old mafia movie where they beat up hostages always gets me.
The nightmare scene is one of the best nightmares I have ever seen.

Not to mention how they dive RIGHT into the movie. No title sequence, no "SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON" at the beginning, no story about what they know about the movie. They dive right in, and I LOVE that.
Absolutely love the reaction, guys! Fun cameo: Jennifer Aniston's boss is played by Mike Judge. Also, Milton, played by Stephen Root, does the voice of Bill from King of the Hill, another Mike Judge project.
Something Mike Judge is really great at his entire career, is that he zeroes in on the little details that are missing from a lot of comedies. Comedy by design is supposed to be 'bombastic' in a way. Judge has these little ticks that reflect the annoyance of everyday work-people. Really appreciate him for that.

Yeah, true, this careful love for realistic, relatable detail mixed with satirical black comedy is really what makes MJ's genius and why his comedic style is so relatable. Even if his humor is often rather cartoony and over the top, it's still grounded in real everyday life.
Some reactors are TERRIBLE at watching comedies because they interrupt a great joke with a comment and miss it, but you guys did this perfectly and I was laughing hard along with you!!
You FRICKIN' NAILED IT! I've gone through a lot of reviewers (ever since I lost my movie-watching partner in crime/dad, I have been driven towards this genre of TH-cam videos). And the best ones are the ones that don't make the video about them, don't pretend not to have not seen what they are reviewing beforehand (unless they actually haven't), and just respond to the video the same way you would with a bunch of friends in real life all sitting around a TV set, having a beer.
These guys get it.
Also, "On My Mind Entertainment" gets it also.

Nothing will turn you off from working in an office environment faster than actually working in an office environment. It is not for everyone and I absolutely hated it. So glad I freelance now, been doing it since 2008.
Gary Cole stole the whole show. And that's saying a lot as this entire movie is awesome.
Gary Cole is also amazing in Veep
It's amazing that he came up as a serious Steppenwolf actor in Chicago, alongside people like John Malkovich, Gary Sinise, Laurie Metcalf. And his first visibility in TV was in a drama, Midnight Caller... but he's become this king of deadpan comedy in the last couple of decades, and it's a joy to watch.
Fun fact: TGIF stopped requiring servers to wear buttons because of this movie

The stapler in the movie originally wasn't offered in red; in stead the prop department simply painted a regular one. Thanks to the movie it was made available in red. Stephen Root a still owns one of the red stapler movie props and whenever he starts on a new movie- or TV-project there'll be a box of red staplers waiting for him to be signed.

Office Space is one of the 1. most influential 2. smartest (though it plays dumb) and 3. best comedies ever on the screen.
Laurence is the underrated heart of this movie.
God that moment when he's dreaming about work ad nauseam, that's something that plagues me. It was far worse when I was actually in a call center and not working from home, but that was always a good indicator that it was time to take some PTO: when I couldn't stop dreaming about work. I would literally wake myself up yelling at annoying coworkers in those dreams, or actually talking out loud as though I was answering a phone call that didn't exist.
Yes! I (Chris) used to lean up in the middle of the night thinking a customer came into the store. Such a stressful feeling.
I used to spend 8-10 hours a day at work drafting maps, then would go to sleep and dream about drafting maps. It's like it never ended. LOL.
For a while I’d answer my personal cell saying “hi this is jimmy how can I help you with your travel insurance”
That’s when “I could do this job in my sleep” isn’t a flex.
@@0okamino I served in the Navy on submarines as a reactor operator, and we always told people it's like Office Space, but mathematically squared. Take all the problems of the office job, and then take away the windows, and sleep there overnight. And cut down the 24 hour day into 3x 6-hour blocks, to where your "day" is only 18 hours... and every 3 days, you sign into the logs with EXACTLY the same date as the last "day" you just lived. Groundhog's Day like a motherfucker. For 3 months in a row.
They also overworked us with drills, pretending there's fires and nuclear plant catastrophes (aka "casualties") at all hours of the day and night to prepare for tests run by outside organizations. We could average 4 hours of sleep between Monday and Wednesday, and the rest of the time we'd survive on coffee and adrenaline. We also had written tests we had to periodically take -- also administered by outside organizations. When we returned home one time, our command was upset and sat down the entire engineering department to ask us why we did so good at drills and sucked so bad at the written tests. I told them, "Well, you wanted to prove we could do these drills in our sleep. I think you achieved that". They didn't appreciate the feedback. "Point taken. Anyone else?" was all they had to say.
So when you say, "do this job in my sleep", you're referring to dreaming. We actually did the job half awake. I told them it "wasn't a good idea" to split atoms while semiconscious, and left the Navy as soon as my contract was done. I now live in a house with skylights, and I appreciate the sun every day that I see it... on its normal 24 hour cycle.
I had a job where i was so stressed i worked like 12 hours a day and then dreamt about work during the nights... Yeah this movie hits a bit too close to home sometimes. But it's also one of the greatest movies ever made!
If you've never worked at an office, you think this film is a comedy. If you did, you realize it's a documentary.
I worked in Flood Damage Restoration. I had a PAIN IN THE A@@ customer that would call me 3x a week for months as his home was being put back together. I used to have recurring dreams of dealing with him. I have been out of the business for 10 years and I still, occasionally, have them.
At the end, you can see Lumbergh's car parked in his spot, but you don't see Bill anywhere in the crowds of people.
One thing you may not know, in a deleted scene, you find out Lumbergh died in the fire. It was a short scene where Peter asked Mike and Samir if they were going to Lumbergh's funeral (during the part where Mike, Samir, and Peter talk when they are at the construction site).
Mike said "Shit no" and Samir also said "No". That's the entire scene, not even 10 seconds.
Since it's deleted, it's not treated as canon (even though it could be) but does change the tone of the ending. Don't mess with Milton and steal his stapler or he will burn you down.
Some said it would have made it too dark with Milton now comitting murder (via arson), but honestly, I think they should have left it in. By the end of the movie, everybody hated Lumbergh anyway so nobody would care (us viewers I mean). Besides, how they treated Milton, I'd say he should get a free pass here.
I don't think the film outright confirmed it was Milton who set the blaze, despite his mumbling to himself he was going to do it, but hinted at it, and left us viewers to "Jump To (our own) Conclusion". Milton was in a hurry to leave the scene though.

Mike Judge is a real down to earth comedian, but when he wants people to laugh, by God, he will do it!

I worked in the corporate environment for over 20 years and have worked with every type of person in this movie. The managers were spot on, the kind of ass kissing yes men that get promoted you want to punch in the face.
And yes, Gary Cole is AMAZING as the boss you just hate!

The scene where they beat the shit out of the copier was spoofed in ab episode of Family Guy, where Stewie and Brian, having had enough of Peter's "Surfing Bird" record, take it to a field and get their revenge.

As a software worker of some 34 years now, this movie is one of my favourites of all time (the same way Spinal Tap is dear to the hearts of anyone who's toured with a band) - and the printer execution scene is right up there with all the classic cinema moments!
I love when Peter's trying to sneak out of the office. Lumbergh makes me think of a shark going up and down the cubicle rows lol.
That scene is shot like a horror film. Overall the cinematography in the film is awesome.
Fun fact. The swing line stapler started a line of red staplers based solely on this movie. That was a hand painted prop used for the movie that had thousand of people asking about it from swingline. It was so popular they decided to make them. It's currently one of their top selling items.
I LOVE the copier destruction scene! I'm a nurse, but we depend heavily on that kind of equipment (we send/receive faxed test results, have forms to fill out that need to be copied in triplicate, etc), and it breaks all the time. When we request repairs, management usually forgets/doesn't bother to take care of it, so we usually try to fix it ourselves before asking. It's only natural for destruction fantasies to arise.
This should be mandatory viewing for all cubicle workers. Brilliant.

1999 was a great year for smaller films that didn't get promoted very well and didn't do very good at the box office that have gone on to become cult classics such as this movie and Galaxy Quest. Two gems that unfairly got overlooked at the time they were released.
"Let me ask you something. When you come in on Monday and you're not feeling real well, does anyone ever say to you: Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays?"
"No. No, man. Shit, no, man. I believe you'd get your ass kicked sayin' something like that, man."
Fun Fact: Milton was actually based on a former co-worker that Mike Judge had worked with during his days as an engineer. One day, Judge went to the co-worker and asked him how he was doing. The co-worker began talking about how he was going to quit his job because he had been forced to move his desk around too many times.
Environmental Ab-Lib Fact: The "P.C. Load Letter" scene was not scripted. David Herman had more lines to say to Ron Livingston, but he was interrupted by the photocopier jamming and didn't understand what the error message meant.
Wanted Stapler Fact: The iconic red stapler coveted by Milton was created for the film by the prop department. They needed a bright enough color to be seen on film and chose red. After the film was released, Swingline began to receive requests from customers for red staplers. Having stopped offering red several years before, they made the decision to start offering the color once more.
The first time I watched this movie I had a ptsd type reaction. It was so much like the place I had just quit. Many years later I watched it a second time and was finally able to laugh.

It would be hard to describe the specific kind of hell of cubicle life. Comfortable chairs, a/c, only actually 15 minutes of real work a day, reliable paycheck, regular hours. But it is a real hell of stupidity and meaninglessness. And bosses who say "yeah...."
I related to the whole "multiple bosses" line. Working at Walmart there was the CSMs (Customer Service Managers) and salary level management the assistant managers, managers, and store manager. So many times I would get like 2 or 3 CSMs separately telling me something, then an assistant manager, then finally one of the managers to the point I'm like "I've heard this five times already let me do my work!"
The way it is normal for a boss in the US to literally order you to work overtime is wild to me.
It isn't legal. But if you say "no" they go find something you did to justify firing you.
@@greenrevolver30 Don't you have "Employment at Will" laws in the US? Don't they mean you can be fired for anything that isn't a protected class?
Labor laws specifically state you cannot be fired for refusing overtime. That is national. Most corporations have Human Resources dept that approved termination. Most have criteria. If criteria isn’t met, potential law suit for wrongful termination. I know people who call in/no show to work 20+ a year, show up late, etc. HR will not approve termination.

There were a few scenes removed from the movie because test audiences didn't like them. In particular, in the original movie it's revealed that Lumberg died in the fire, for example, but that was deemed a bit too dark so it was cut. Also, in the end where you see Peter's supervisor walk up to him and Lawrence, in the original film the guy talks and acts exactly like Lumberg did, which implies that Peter is going to be stuck hating his new boss just like the old one, but people felt like that took away from the ending.
When I watched this movie I actually went to work on Monday in a much better mood. So many life lessons packed into a comedy

@@ericb.4313 I never said to anyone of my colleagues "case of the Mondays". However, when someones says he doesn't like Mondays I ironically say "You have Garfield syndrome - you hate Mondays".
Office Space hit me hard the first time I saw it and it has become one of my favourites. As someone who has spent over 30 years in a dull office job, it really does portray the soul-sucking nature of it very well. As an aside, Mike Judge plays Joanna's manager who is fixated on her lack of flair.

It's a call to the corporate tactic of forcing a person to change their personality to do more for the company.
It's not enough to have your time and attention, they want your soul.

I saw this movie first time in 2003 or 2004 and i was young and still got the message and jokes. Absolute fave comedy movie to me. Im not even an office/coder worker, regular factory worker
Also there was another ending filmed, before the movie was finalized, where after Peter leaves the construction site, some boss walks up and starts giving a random employee the Lumbergh spiel. 'Cause there's _always_ a Peter and _always_ a Lumbergh regardless of the job (case in point, the waitress). You can find it on TH-cam.

All I hear when Mike Judge is talking to Aniston as her boss is David Van Driessen the hippie teacher from Beavis and Butthead.
Gary Cole (Lumbergh) was very good at playing Mike Brady in The Brady Bunch Movie and A Very Brady Sequel. This movie came out after both of those.
In case you didn't know it, the actor playing Jennifer Anniston's boss who was obsessed with flair was Mike Judge, himself.
Dude your arm! That's the kind of injury you get from blocking an attack with a bat. Very cool.
If you two ever care to delve into TV series, you can see Stephen Root in some of his funniest work on the show "Newsradio." It has a fantastic cast, and is my personal favorite sitcom.

probably the most effectively brutal skewering of management culture ever, really cathartic no matter what kind of job you have. but it's so funny how different the job market is now. i was 21 in 1999, and one of the bleakest things my generation could imagine was spending 20 years in the same cubicle, and now like samir says "it would be nice to have that kind of job security."
I work for the government, and when people ask how does work feel, i say watch Office Space and Pentagon Wars.
Speaking from experience, cubicle office work was not too far off from this reality. This movie was like watching my life at the time!!! It was a liberating experience to see this movie...kinda changed my life actually. For the better? Depends on your take. 😆 🤣 😆 ❤️
You should most definitely watch "Idiocracy" as well... another classic Mike Judge film.
I didn't fully understand this movie until I started in the job I had before my current job. Working in a bigger office, it's so horrifyingly accurate.
This movie is absolute legend like it’s beyond 10/10 as most Mike judge work is. Great cast, soundtrack and writing.
No joke in 20 years working in IT not one day has gone by where this movie wasn’t completely relevant.
The fact that Milton got that $300k was perfect too because the company owed him 5 years of his life anyway.

I interned in the late 90s/00s and I had fantasies about taking the company printer out to a field with a baseball bat/ playing rap music while I destroy it/ favorite dream for years. You have no idea how little they tried to spend on tech and how much they didn't know about it.
When this movie came out I worked at a Tech company it spoke to us.. :)

The first exposure I had to Mike Judge's work was on the MTV series "Liquid Television" which showed short, adult-oriented animated clips. His "Milton" which this film was based on was there, and also "Beavis and Butthead" which grew to have its own half-hour show and a feature length film. A few years later, "King Of The Hill" premiered, based on a side-character from "B&B-H", and I'm sure you know what a success that was. Judge himself played in this film, as the Tchotcki's manager.
First office job I got, the trainer told us to watch this movie because that's basically what all office jobs are like.

This movie is too real, like even if you showed your colleagues or managers this film, the next day, they'll still just have those annoying traits.

Have you never just not gone into work. I remember the first time I did it. I sent a sick note saying I would be off for 3 months. Gave no actual explanation as to why just (personal reasons) at that time in the UK you got paid 80% of your wage/salary. During that time I took myself off to Tenerife in the canary islands and worked in a pub for a year. To be young again. 🤣
A deleted scene that adds context, yet removes the coziness of the ending, is when the foreman walks up as the credits begin to roll, he says "Yeah, I'm gonna need you guys to speed up mmkay, thanks a bunch". Lol

In the beginning credits, it says the movie is based on Mike Judge's Milton. Milton was one of Mike Judge's experiments making short cartoons. It was featured on MTV's Liquid Television, as was Beavis and Butthead.

My first experience with Stephen Root was on the sitcom News Radio. His name was Jimmy James, and he stole every scene he was in.
Prior to this movie, Swingline actually didn’t make red staplers. After this movie it became one of their best sellers.
Stephen Root (Milton) has been in a lot of shows. I loved him in the TV series News Radio and also his voice acting in King of the Hill.
Just in case you're interested: this was filmed in Austin TX. Morningwood Apts was actually great hills apartments. I lived in the complex right next door for a while. Nice area.
