Jim Carrey said that being in the Grinch makeup was like being buried alive every day. He told Ron Howard that he couldn't do the movie, but they were able to help him cope by hiring a specialist who trains CIA operatives how to withstand torture. Ron Howard wore the makeup himself for one day shooting so he could appreciate what Jim was going through in the role.

I like how this whole movie could be a Greek Epic or something. Because certain characters feel like they could be stand-ins for certain Greek Gods.
The Grinch is obviously Hephaestus. He's "ugly" and therefore shunned by most of society. He lives in a mountain (maybe dormant volcano?) and he's an inventor and craftsman. He's highly intelligent and it shows in his home decor and workshop area.
So, if the Grinch is Hephaestus, then Martha May HAS to be Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love, also ends up being Hephaestus' husband. She also feels like Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Just that unbelievingly beautiful woman that seems unattainable by others and is married to an unusual husband.
Mayor Augustus May Who has to be Ares. He's always willing to start a fight, he's a HUGE bully to the Grinch and Cindy Lou, and nobody should like him,

One thing I think REALLY shows how much of a truly amazing writer Suess was is that, I don't think this story has ever had a truly "bad" adaptation. I own all 3 major versions of this story on blue ray, and make it a yearly thing to have a Grinch day and watch all 3, cause all 3 are really good in their own ways. (Yes, even the modern one from Illumination)
Also, if I remember right, Cindy Loo's actress actually grew up to become a proper singer. She fronts "The Pretty Wreckless" if I remember right.

While the production value on this movie is insane and Carrey puts his all into this.. For my money, the perfect adaptation of this story is the beautifully animated Chuck Jones Christmas Special from the 60s. It takes the threadbare Seuss book and expands it out about as much as you could. Besides the extra bloat Ron Howard adds here with the Grinch backstory, what always rubbed me the wrong way about this movie comes from personal experience.
I was working retail the Christmas of 2000, and "Grinch Merch" was absolutely inescapable that year... it choked every single every retail outlet with drastically unappealing Grinch junk.. and the movie, by Ron Howard's admission, was made just for that reason.. he saw the commercial potential in merchandising.. which to me, is the EXACT OPPOSITE MESSAGE OF THE STORY. The Grinch's whole fable comes down to one line "Christmas doesn't come from a store.. Christmas perhaps is something much more", which was entirely lost on Howard.
This is up there with Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" in how you can bloat out a short story until it barely resembles the beloved thing it was based on and the original themes get crushed under the weight of commercialization.

Then I guess the satire of the Who's being materialistic at the start rang true, huh?

1:00 Yes, every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas as such,
But the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville? Not so much.
    There fixed it
Edit: 23:59 well apparently there's a deleted scene where the Grinch eats the Mayor's nose so that's something

10:37 I think what Altaf means by "perfect dick" is what we would call a hate sink; the Mayor is supposed to be unlikable. Another example would be the Bishop from the Castlevania Netflix series, if you want to try that for Halloween!
If you want more Jim Carey craziness, please watch both Sonic movies!
10:50 Kind of a dark behind the scenes fact, but it's said that he went a full 8 HOURS just on that makeup (it might have taken only two and it's just Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey, but still...)! He abused the makeup artist too

The teaser trailer to me suggested that the movie could have easily been done as a horror as it didn't suggest that it was a comedy, I remember only seeing the grinches hands as he goes around the house sucking up the presents and cutting the floorboards to take the tree away, even in that scene where he pretends to be santa while hiding behind the tree could easily be nightmare fuel to make a straight up Grinch horror movie if they wanted to... but no the movie itself wasn't scary as a kid, you were immediately on board with Jim Carreys Schtick plus I was already obsessed with Ace Ventura and The Mask.

Yeah it was top 20 Unscripted Jim Carrie moments that left in the movie. The Grinch have 3 moments the table trick, having dinner by myself and the Director that it.

Also the 'trick' where the grinch whips the table cloth off the table was an error. Jim Carrey was supposed to whip it away and everything come clattering down but he actually whipped the table cloth out and 'had' to go back to have everything fall over

15:09 My problem with the Whos in this movie is that they all just very soulless and greedy and only care about material stuff (in the book and the original TV special with Boris Karloff, the whos are supposed to be the complete opposite of the grinch, they’re nice, joyful, good hearted, and already know the true meaning of Christmas)
I get it that is the point in the movie of them being soulless I get it, but that kind of goes against the point of the book itself. The grinch shouldn't have to be the one who spells the message out for them, *he's the one who's supposed to learn the lesson.*
The movie got it so backwards and you honestly side with the grinch in that scene after everything you saw in this film tell me you don't understand why he thinks christmas is so stupid, he's absolutely right.

  • @binkyboy448
    @binkyboy448 ปีที่แล้ว

The one thing that annoyed me about this movie is that the narration sticks close to the book by saying no one quite knows why the Grinch hates Christmas, only for the movie to introduce characters who know _exactly_ why the Grinch hates Christmas. If they were going to put in characters who'd explain his backstory, just a little tweak in the narration would've worked better.
