What did you think of the biggest battle of cour 2 so far? Were you impressed with Kenpachi's long-awaited Shikai reveal, and did Kenpachi vs Gremmy live up to the hype? Let me know your thoughts!
i've read this arc when it was being released weekly, I've started to re read the chapters again and i've notice the pacing in the manga was quick too. my thing is that i was hoping that the anime would expand on the enemies back stories in the Anime, but feel like the enemies appears and quickly get's killed off . i still don't understand Gremmy. what is his back story , i want to know more about him.
What I liked about Gremmy was how he paralleled Kenpachi. His power is so broken it meant there was nothing that could challenge him and he felt bored. But Kenpachi is able to bring out the thrill of battle in Gremmy and being engulfed in that bloodlust is what ends up being his undoing. At one point Gremmy nearly imagines his own defeat in battle and at the end imagines possessing Kenpachi's strength and being torn apart as a result
Personally, my head cannon is Gremmy the brain utilized Gremmy the body so long that they mentally became the same thing. Fully united through the Visionaries power. So once Gremmy's construct body was killed, Gremmy the mind thought it was killed as well (since it views them as the same thing) thus making it so. I think of it as being akin of a psychosomatic effect.
I really like how Yachiru's one fight is so reminiscent of Kenpachi's fight with Tousen in the SS arc. Up against an invisible enemy? Get slashed a few times before getting the hang of fighting on instinct, at which point they take a massive slash to the chest.
kenpachi immediately understood the Visionary powers of Gremmy. that's why he also used psychological warfare against gremmy. the reason why he never lost is because gremmy was passively imagining Kenpachi to be an unstoppable monster. kenpachi was actually getting buffed through the fight
When Kenpachi called Gremmy a fool, it was so well done and so sympaethic. Loved this progressions arc from Zaraki. Bleach is simply top teir right now.
The whole Yachiru thing is why I am a firm believer that Gremmy cannot just imagine people to die because he would have to focus on that imagination of a person dying. Also, that person has the willpower to fight back as well thus it can make it harder for him to just think it.
Agreed. The fact that Yachirus bones reverted back to normal is a literal the biggest showing that gremmy relies on reiatsu to manipulate others. If it was as op as ppl thought, then her bones would have stayed cookies permanently whether gremmy was actively thinking about it or not
Most of the cuts weren’t that big of a deal, but the ones just before the meteor hits were criminal. I felt it while watching the episode that the meteor just doesn’t feel as impactful as it did when I read the manga.
Lets hope the blu-ray in late feb 2024 can add extra few scenes even if its not much. The cour 1 blu-ray improved on a lot of minor stuff when it was released (animation fixes, added extra detailed background, color correction, anatomy and design correction, general details, etc), it even featured an seperated video where you get the fully explained power from Sternritter Q before kenpachi rips his throat. I can already see there are some stuff in this cour that is probably going to get a few correction once the blu-ray comes out.
When his face lit up that cracked me up so much. His face glowed grinning like a psycho Cheshire cat and he jumped over Gremmy's head. It was like he was saying,"Move b**** I see a bigger object, I'm slicing it up!"😂
This episode was spectacular. I didn’t want the fight between these two monsters to end. I’m glad you mentioned the "reiatsu" effect that we haven’t seen since the og anime. I didn’t even realize that Arumaki was one of the shinigami cheering on Kenny. They are cooking with the cgi in the TYBW. The guns Grammy imagined were animated so well. Of course the Nozarashi reveal was awesome, but the missing reactions to the meteor hurt the scene so much.
I think he tried to reach zarakis full power and what happened to him would happen to anyone including zaraki himself, he's just too op at this point, didn't everyone pretty much know that zaraki would be at the top when he got his bankai? Only captain in bleach history to not have a bankai? Kenpachi is him.
Gremmy's power is amazing...but difficult. You are at the point where high level characters are at least near light speed. It would be hard to vividly imagine anything useful in the time it takes them to close the distance. On top of that, morbid curiosity could be fatal.
I mean, Gremmy could’ve just imagined Kenpachi’s head exploding when he first arrived. That would’ve been quicker, and he also could’ve bragged about killing one of the special war powers in under five seconds. But he didn’t do that because🤷
My Only complaint is the removal of all of the reactions to the meteor. It makes the entire fight so much more hype and serious IMO. Other than that absolutely phenomenal episode! Easily my favorite episode of the second cour.
I think that works well in the context of the manga but so many reactions would slow down the pacing of the fight. Kubo stated there would be changes to the source materials to better the pacing & I feel that's one of them. I feel he did it to where If you want to reminisce in that minor detail, the original source material is there for that purpose.
A comment I completely agreed with on Reddit: I'll do my best to explain Gremmy, his powers and limitations. First regarding Gremmy himself, he was locked up (mentioned in the manga) due to his power. In the light novel we learn that he wasn't exposed to the outside world and most likely got only general knowledge. He lacks combat experience and his isolations hinders his creative potential. He was told he's the strongest and believes it but nobody ever really challenged it. As a result, he was easily pressured by Zaraki to try and fight more with his imagination. For his powers. you need to remember he's still more or less a Quincy. He has to absorb reishi and uses that to fuel his imagination. The reason why he needed 2 bodies for the meteor is because a single body's reishi isn't enough to fuel what he wants to imagine. Things he create with his thoughts will stay even if he stops thinking about it. HOWEVER, this does not apply to trying to effect other people. Fights are a battle between reiatsu and when Gremmy is trying to manipulate another, it's his reiatsu going against his enemy. If his reiatsu is strong enough, he can manipulate their body in the case with Yachiru. Even being able to change their body, Gremmy still has to maintain focus because if he doesn't, his reiatsu weakens and the enemy body's reiatsu can push back and regain their original form. For Kensei and Rose, because they were so weak at the time, Gremmy just imagines them dead and there is no reiatsu left to fight back. Zaraki's reiatsu is so great that Gremmy cannot even effect Zaraki at all. One misconception people seem to have is that Gremmy buffed Kenpachi by imagining him a monster. This isn't true given what I said earlier and also it was Kenpachi's theory that Gremmy made him out to be a monster which Gremmy later corrected. Gremmy's defeat simply came from not being able to imagine a body to contain Kenpachi's power so he blew himself up and with that he basically exhausted his mental capacities and couldn't maintain staying alive anymore.
Kenpachi's true strength is so OP it literally damages his own body while he turns into an uncontrollable beast. A perfect match for Gremmy. This was a wild one and it really shows the insane and terrifying depths the war is getting to. Yeah maybe it for the best humans remain blissfully unaware of all of this and Spirits as a whole.
First taking on the role of Yachiru’s surrogate brother/father-figure, and now “coaching” Gremmy in what it truly means to be the strongest. Kenpachi is surprisingly good with kids.
yachiru is nazarashi.. shes not even real, shes the spirit of the zanpakto.. this is why she never feels pain and why she always appears to other soul reapers and people dont know where she comes from but when kenny ask where are you from she touches the sword as if to tell him this is where she is from.. this is why when he finally calls out her name she dissapears for the rest of the bleach story.. so shes not even a actual person
"There is nothing in this world that I cannot cut" - Zaraki kenpanchi Gremmy is a character that can mess up and win against most characters in the show but it's too bad that the first enemy he had to fight was zaraki, a monster that cuts through anything.. Also the power of imagination is busted but at the same time it can backfire
This is one fight that definitely needed to be spread across 2 episodes. They could have Atleast left in the reactions from the shinigami but even more importantly the sternritter’s reactions to the meteor. That added so much weight and depth into how powerful Gremmy truly is.
Eh, I don't think the reactions from the Sternritters is a major loss. But we're getting closer to fall anime so I think TYBW is close to ending. They probably felt they wouldn't have time to make it a two-parter. If my math is correct, they're most likely ending cour 2 with the reveal of Uryu's betrayal
Actually in this Cour it is covered till chapters 610 so after cour 2 only 77 chapters remaining form the speculation at most 40 chapters for each cour 3 and 4 therefore we get more anime only scenes for that only they are cutting most unnecessary comedies and redundant dialogues and monologues so that we can get the true vision of Kubo 😇
Yes but still it adds more impact to the scene both Shinigami and Quincies running panicking Hashwalth telling troop to protect his majesty at least that I wanted to see the other cut I don’t really mind but that was a big scene where things goes to another level.@@IchigoKurosakitheSalvation
I absolutely agree with some of the criticism! When I voted in the poll over at the Bleach subreddit, most people were incredibly impressed with the episode, and I felt almost like a fish out of water because, while many things were awesome like the animation and voice acting, I just couldn't overlook its flaws. You have explained it perfectly well in the entire video: the pacing was borderline insane and it's really a shame that some nice worldbuilding elements were sacrificed in order to fit so many manga chapters in a single episode. I certainly enjoyed the battle, but I can't love it like I did with Rukia's fight.
My personal theory as to why Gremmy died is it’s kind of like Gerard’s cross. The brain is the core, but can’t really do anything without the body, including making new things with imagination.
Nozarashi in it's shikai form looks so good it's like a huge butcher knife,it connects with the character of zaraki. Also the fact that he had gremmy panic and also scream that zaraki is a monster in a panicked tone speaks volumes on how monstrously strong zaraki really is.
I'll give my take on Yachiru's powers here: As she's Kenny's Bankai Spirit akin to fused Tensa Zangetsu, the powers that she's demonstrating are Kenny's zanpakuto techniques and abilities in the same fashion as they would normally use in a shinigami's inner world when they mediate with their sword for an extended period of time. Kenny's zanpakuto, in my opinion, is clearly a blade with the effect that alters cutting ability and has the aesthetic and symbolic signifiers of "demon" specifically Japanese oni. Even with a sealed blade, Kenny's battles have often fixated upon cutting ability, be it the ability to cut through someone's overwhelming spiritual pressure, cutting someone you can't perceive, cutting through someone who's skin is neigh-indestructible, cutting someone in half or just being able to cut someone period. When Kenny says he can cut through anything Gremmy imagines, I believe it is because Nozarashi's ability is to amplify the cutting ability of the blade. This may seem a little simplistic, but I think a straightforward general ability like that fits Kenny pretty well. Being known for his monstrous spiritual energy in battle with an opponent with a monstrous ability like Gremmy, Kenny takes some level of confidence in his ability to cut anything Gremmy can conjure because Kenny is confident in having more raw power to work with in conjunction with his blade. In a sense, Yachiru's "I can cut you even if I miss ability" is just an extension of Nozarashi's ridiculous cutting power amplified by the fact that she's the evolved form of it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kenny could learn to use that ability in shikai if he were to train to. As for the onis Yachiru summons, I'd guess that "in cutting you when you're out of reach" could extend to "my blade's edge is longer than my reach" or "my blade exists in a place beyond my reach as well as my hand." Seeing as Kenny's bankai turns him into a demon, and a bankai is a sword release, I'd reason that Kenny's bankai can turn what's holding the blade into a demon, so... if the blade exists beyond its current location, it could turn the space surrounding the conceptual blade into a demon as well with the user's spiritual energy. My only real trip up here is that Yachiru can manifest 2...
Aside from Aizen, Kenpachi is my favorite character. Glad to see him emerge victorious, but Gremmy should have imagined himself intangible. His potential is off the charts, but he didn't have any battle experience because everybody was scared of him.
@@nahte123456 There isn’t anything he can’t cut. I love how this series takes that concept to damn near ridiculous extremes with kenpachi 😂 that’s why this battle was pretty perfect conceptually tbh.
I think it would’ve been awesome if they had split the fight up into two episodes with the first episode ending with the creation of the meteor and Zaraki speaking to Nozarashi and then the second episode opens with everyone panicking about their impending doom, finishing the fight, and then when Zaraki gets ganged up on, ending on the cliff hanger of Ichigo showing up and talking to a near death Zaraki! Either way, just lucky to have this animated but this was what I thought might have been a good alternative for the pacing issue! Love the content!! 😁
I feel it was better to introduce Gremmy's inner dialogue and focus on his own as a character rather than the conversations between Askin and Pepe, because they think of him as a monster and how they feel he should be locked up, but since the sternritters don't show any care for each other I doubt they wouldn't be saying that about any one of them. The reactions to the meteor dropping should have been kept in though.
It's a huge shame that the Pepe/Askin dialogue and the meteor reactions were cut. Seeing both sides panic would definitely help flesh out the scene more and give us a bit more context to what the other quincy think of Gremmy. However, I understand why they cut these scenes. I feel that even if they included these scenes and maybe some more extended combat scene, I can only see maybe an extra 5 min of content that could be added from it. Trying to add this would mess the pacing of the future episodes and where those would want to leave off and maybe extra content that is more deserving of being shown. Overall, it's a fine episode but didn't achieve it's full potential and for manga readers, is a bit disappointing in what it could have been. I just hope what we see going forward will surprise even manga readers.
What if since yachiru is the bankai spirit and obviously knows all the abilities and has access to them and as we seen even regulates them. The "shikai" we seen her have is actually a sword ability Zaraki has but not quite yet. 🤷🏿♂️ since he just started having his sword abilities.
she is.. in the flashback he ask her where is she from and she touches the sword.. then when he calls out the name of his zanpakto she dissapears forever.. this is the last episode you ever see her.. its so obvious its not even funny.. she was never a real person.. this is why ichigo, uryru and many others always see her magically appear and say "where the hell did you come from" how many times have people in bleach said that to her.. cause she just appears and dissapears at will.. shes the only soul reaper we have seen to NEVER experience pain
I think it's safe to assume with yachiru description that sanpo kenju are sword spirits of other shinigami or even dead shinigami that follows yachiru as they met her someday in the past. Like in the zanpakuto fillers we saw lots of stray zanpakuto spirits so I always assumed that's what they were especially since they have shikai zanpakuto...
The visionary is very powerful but it still has a limit as we seen Gremmy needing a perfect clone of himself to create a meteor and even more to create the vacuum of space
A completely null point however since Gremmy's clones aren't really clones, they're literally another him spawned from nothing and *explicitly* double his capabilities at no cost to himself. Meaning; nothing's stopping him from infinitely making more of himself until his power exceeds whatever he's facing even if it *was* more powerful to begin with. Needs 2 clones for a meteor? Just make a thousand clones, now there are 500 meteors and nothing keeps him from going infinite.
@@crispycreammcfly4782 It's not that he couldn't, it's that he just *didn't.* Gremmy himself states explicitly that he imagined himself with Kenpachi's power and *succeeded* in manifesting it, meaning it's not a power beyond The Visionary's ability to manipulate, but he *didn't* imagine it in a body that could handle it and that's why his body then started dying. Not because he *couldn't* manifest it into a vessel that could hold it, he *didn't think* to manifest it into a vessel that could hold it, because he thought his body *was* a vessel that could hold it before realizing his mistake. The fact that Gremmy's power *could actually duplicate and manifest Kenpachi's power in the first place* means that irrefutably, The Visionary is capable of handling it in the first place or it shouldn't have been able to *create it from nothing* and put it into a body to begin with.
@@officiallyjan8596 He literally says he couldn't imagine a body to hold the power. That's a limit. You're assuming a lot and that there are no limits when clearly there are.
Aizen survived Soi Fon's shikai because his reiatsu was stronger. I think Kenpachi couldn't be affected directly by Gremmy's power due to his high level of reiatsu. Gremmy had to create exterior threaths (like a meteor.) Yashiru's reiatsu was presumably weaker, so he could affect her directly, by transforming her bones into cookies. I think Gremmy can't impose his imagination onto Kenpachi. His high reiatsu reinforces Ken chan's belief in himself and his own personal capacities to overcome challenges.
The glaring issue with that assumption is that it's a limitation that *needed* to be stated in some way, it's not good storytelling to simply *NOT* have a character do something they should logically be able to do and have *all the reason in the universe* to do and then leave the explanation for why they didn't go *completely* unacknowledged and unexplained. It would've been incredibly easy too, all it would take would be a *single* throw-away thought-bubble of Gremmy thinking to himself that he's trying to kill Kenpachi directly but it's not working because Kenpachi is too dense with spiritual energy or something like that, and the fact that it IS that easy makes it all the worse writing that it's not there if it was the *intended* explanation. As it stands, we just get a character introduced to us who can do literally anything and who explicitly has no real limits based on stated information, then he fights a guy who couldn't possibly really threaten him no matter what he does, then he accidentally kills himself in a way that he really should've been able to recover from but he just... didn't... and that's the end of it.
@@officiallyjan8596ah yes every detail needs to be explained, gremmy tried to become as strong as kenpachi could get and it was simply impossible because kenpachi is so powerful, zaraki is simply him.
@@officiallyjan8596 lore obsession has absolutely *ruined* people's ability to enjoy interpretation. All the pieces are there to show how Gremmy's powers work and are limited, but Kubo just trusted his audience's reading comprehension too much ig
Ya, i feel the same as someone who read the manga and saw all the hate this arc got back when it was being released and now seeing it get so much love especially with the new added/extended scenes is a really great feeling. I hope and cant wait to see what more kubo does to expand and or add to this arc, especially with the 2nd half of this cour now going forward. It's actually really amazing to see and have bleach back after so many years.
I think there has to be a limit on Gremmys power, when it comes to being able to imagine people dead or doing something that directly causes death. Because Yhwach gave him his Schrift. Surely Yhwach wouldn't give someone like Gremmy the capability to kill him by just imagining it? Or doing something like erasing his Sternritter on a whim. I think Gremmys power has a lot more nuances then people tend to think about. He can't have negative emotions about himself, because he can affect himself. He is also locked up, so he shouldn't have enough experience in the world to be able to think quickly enough and have enough imagination. Also the dude put Kenpachi in space and it didn't matter? Like what is he supposed to do? A black hole? He would need about 30 more clones to imagine that and Kenpachi would still cut through it. 😂😂😂
Ikr, space didn't matter. What else would? Certainly not some puny bombs lol But I like how someone in some other reaction explained it. "Kenpachi was affected by space even as Shinigami simply because Gremmy, in that moment, also imagined what outer space will do to a body, boiling off fluid in low pressure and eventually dying." So Gremmy might actually have imagined what being in space would feel like which caused Kenpachi all the physical damage in the process. It makes complete sense. Which also concludes that YES, he could have imagined Kenpachi dead, but he didn't want to do it that way. And I presume, someone who can strike a meteor into pieces can also harden his muscles enough to build pressure and survive space too?
Once he became Gremmy he eventually forgot his original self making Gremmy the new identity of the brain and once that persona died he can’t think anymore.
i believe gremmy didnt create a new body because he believes that if his physical body dies then he would actually die, so basically he imagined his own death because he truly believed that his imagination was reaching its limit when it really was not
The removal of the entire battlefield's reaction to the meteor really diminished the scope and the intensity of what was about to happen and a shame. Somehow it made the meteor look like a cookie. When I read the manga nearly a decade ago, I remembered this scene in epic proportions, but in the anime, I could imagine Zaraki simply slicing the meteor in half simply by removing his eye patch and not needing to release his shikai.
@janno278 why respond to me if you're just going to insult me and then not even respond to what I said. You're the one that's tripping. At least address what I said and not go off on your own...
Kenpachi did not struggle with him to be fair it was just spread out to give it more epicness it could be said this should have been in 2 episodes, definately rushed
The fight was of course great. The dialog is really good. I like that he finally starts to fight. But again, the way Kenpachi breaks down how he could never imagine losing to him. and that totally crushes Gremmy was really great. It also shows how much Kenpaci has grown. I also loved the dialog between Kenpachi and Isane. That was brilliant.
I personally think the brain just accepted its death upon being unable to handle his imagination of Zaraki's power. It clearly broke him, he accepted defeat, and as a result, he imagined his own death. Heck, I personally think Gremmy had a bit of a death wish based on his poem and last words. It seems he longed to go somewhere he could no longer imagine anything. That, or the brain requires a shell to actually move around and live, and the destruction of the child Gremmy's body actually killed him in that way.
Anime is adapting well, but it ends ups highlighting one of the main flaws of the source material: lack of development of the Quincies. They're pretty much villains of the week. Weekly manga kinda masked this (8 chapters for this episode, for example), reading all at once made it clear, but the anime just throws it on our faces. Again, as an adaptation, Anime is going great. I hope they can give us more of the extra story parts that Bleach needed, for us at least feel like there is a plot. Biggest flaw in Bleach manga was not what was in it(although there are problems in that too, especialy all the convenient powers like Nanao's sword and Uryu's and Hashwalt's Uno reverse showdown, i.e.) but what wasn't (mainly Reio plot).
@@Stanzbey69 While Haschwalt's power had been eluded to since Chang's execution Uryu's kinda came out of nowhere and just happened to be conveniently good against it. I don't have a problem with it but that's probably what they ment.
It seems like we a going for chapter 611 in this cour, and if the rumors are true we are probably getting a 50min long episode 26 in itself which is probably going to cover the last 10 chapters. This is why cour 3 and 4 is going to have 2.88 chapters per episode on average after cour 2. Its building room for new anime adaption. To give some perspective It means that over the next 26 episodes (cour 3 and 4) we can have almost 12 episodes of them be purely anime canon and still pull off 14 episodes with about 5 chapters pacing. This is also not taking in to account extended episodes if they decide to do that too (longer episode, skip intro or outro). Now ofcourse they are going to mix the amount of anime canon with the manga adaption and change up stuff.
Awesome video, as always! I didn't really mind most of the cuts, honestly, I just wish they'd kept the reaction scenes in there at least. As for Gremmy's death; it never bothered me too much because I always assumed that he just ran out of rietsu and died that way. Maybe it's a bad assumption, considering how weird his abilities are, but I figured it made sense since everything in this world works off of spiritual pressure. I just assumed that he needed the raw power to use his ability, which is why he needed a clone to make the meteor and needed multiple clones to send Kenpachi to space. He also seemed out of breath/tired after the combo of meteor+clones+outer space+bombs+healing. Just my 2 cents.
Reiatsu determines everything in battle. Kenpachi's reiatsu eclipses Gremmy's, so the latter's powers cannot affect Kenpachi directly, only what's around him.
no. the entire premise of the fight is that gremmy didnt want to use his powers on kenpachi. he wanted to fight kenpachi so he was only going to construct thing with his imagination to fight kenpachi. he could of used his powers on kenpachi. but due to kepnachis hubris he wanted to teach kenpachi a lesson. this is all explained clearly in the manga.
That's one of my thought too when gremmy vanished, he said he imagine what if he can't imagnine anymore or something like that. But the fight itself for me because he run out of juice.
@@masyan3457 in the fight the way i interpreted was that less that he run out of juice more he didn't think to give himself a strong body before he gave himself the power. Even with imagination if one is not smart to think ahead something will came up short in the end
My guess as to why the brain didn’t create another body could be because while the body that died was a product of his own imagination, before creating the body, Gremmy hadn’t really truly gained consciousness until then. It was just that a brain, and giving himself a body made him into a fully loving being. But now Gremmy, the being it came to be known as, is dead.
I wish the anime had added scenes earlier with some of these characters. Teasing their powers or showing people like as nodt actually using Senbon Zakura. Making this whole second invasion feel less random and on the fly
I always took the death scene as Gremmy trying to imitate Kenpachi's power but couldn't. When he realized he couldn't then he basically gave up on living.
I believe gremmy died because he overused his imagination. After he tried everything he could think of and imagined something that he wasn’t capable of. I think he basically overheated his abilities, killing his brain
I apologize if this has already been stated. But it simply comes down to the fact that Kenpachis power is unimaginable. It's why he couldn't create a body that could contain it. And this monster being something that he couldn't imagine, he was broken and defeated. Utterly destroyed. How very existence can't live if there is something beyond his imagination
Regarding the brain : I believe that Gremmy envisioning Kenpachi's power didn't just wreck his body, but went as far as negating the visionary. I believe that when Gremmy takes in Kenpachi's power, he takes in his monstrous reiatsu. We know that in Bleach, reiatsu trumps all. Now, one might argue that nothing tops SK reiatsu, but I'll take my chances with Kenpachi's (who in the novels is almost on par with Ichigo) reiatsu being able to surpass the reiatsu that a part (just a part, not the whole) of the SK possesses. If that is the case, then Gremmy absorbing Zaraki's power destroyed him, while making the visionary nul and void. To conclude, the brain's power is temporarily knocked out, and it will take time for it to reform a body (except we know Tokinada takes it). It is also possible that the brain couldn't imagine anything more powerful than Gremmy, or something along this veine.
Awesome video like usual! I think the fight showcases kubo's style of writing the best in the series. He said he thinks of cool scenarios for his characters them makes the fight around it. What better way for a fan favourite like kempachi to return with an out of the box fight like this. About kempachi cutting space, I highly doubt it. It opens too many plot holes down the line. Cutting space is the same as warping it. This would invalidate the 45 or so chapters when they need to reach the palace later on, as kempachi could just cut a way there.
I've always thought that Gremmy's death was due to him imagining himself a dead man. Gremmy went all in, his last attempt to attack Kenpachi was out of cope, by that point Gremmy probably figured out he would never defeat his opponent and he himself would die as a consequence, either in combat against Zaraki or punished by Yhwach's hand.
Next episode will be kubo's favorite group of girls The Bambi's I'm actually really hyped by least hope we get the aftermath of the meteor being destroyed everyone's reactions after
I believe that abrupt and uneventful end to the fight was pretty much perfect as well as the lack of background music throughout the episode. Kenpachi is about to realize that from this point forward, he will stand at the top unrivaled, lacking Challenge and purpose, in other words empty and lacking something. From here on out, every single one of his fights will be like this (once the absolutely bullsh*t hax characters are either retired or defeated oc), being reflected in this episode. No idea if this was done on purpose but i do like this idea.
I don't like how Zaraki says his Zanpakuto's name before he uses Shikai. The name reveal would have been better done by calling out his Shikai for the first time.
I think “What Can You See in Their Eyes” was the perfect song for the Gremmy fight but that they definitely missed an opportunity with the reactions. Having the lyrics: ‘Far too strong to resist, there is nowhere to hide from the force that will tear them apart and banish their souls.’ playing over scenes of others reacting to the meteor would have really drove the message home about how terrifying Gremmy really is/was.
Removing the meteor reaction is a big shame but I guess we can't win them all, but if mean there's more new content for the later of this arc then I'm fine with it.
The destruction of the shell isn't what leads to the death of his brain, his body and brain both shut down because he fully *couldn't* imagine himself winning. After facing the truth of Kenpachi's strength and power, all he could imagine was losing. So The Visionary made it come true, his body returns to reishi and his mind stops. He imagines being unable to imagine things anymore, and it comes true.
Gremmy being locked up is a something that was first mentioned in Can't Fear Your Own World. it's just a short history of the guy and how dangerous he is that Yhwach himself sealed him away and only brought him out to fight
I think the reason why things feel rushed and missing lots of content, is not because of poor directing, but because of the 4 seasons this series is getting. This series should not have been limited in any way, in fact Kubo should have given the all clear to go back and make the story he wanted too from the start had he not been given a deadline. This series should have been allowed to go as long as it needed.
Yeah, imagine how cool and great this adaptation would be if TYBW would get more than 52 episodes and each cour would start and end with one hour episode.....
Grimmy imagination hit a wall which resulted in something akin to writer block. The brain couldn't think or produce anything at the point which is why he faded away and couldn't generate anything new. That my best guess what occured.
Now that I’ve seen the fight animated I actually like it less. Gremmy could’ve been way more creative with his abilities and could’ve defeated Kenpachi without having to actually imagine him dead. I think Kubo was a bit generic with how he handled Gremmy’s creativity but I do like the way he is defeated. That was good.
This might just be me but I always loved how the first thing Gremmy did after being released from his prison was create a mountain of candy and food with Liltotto to eat
It's a difficult thing to try and cram all of the cut content in. If we remove Guenael we lose that important character building and intrigue around yachiru. Do we remove the issane scene? Then we just never bring up unohana. If the fight is split between 2 episodes then it could lessen the impact as well since we would move onto other things. At the end of the day the episode was great and was given Kubos blessing since he is so involved this cour.
I always wondered why Gremmy didn’t just imagine Kenpachi’s head exploding right when he arrived. That would’ve been quicker, and he could’ve bragged that he killed one of the special war powers in a matter of seconds. You know what, I’m gonna stop right here. When dealing with abilities like this it’s better to not think about it at all.
@mongreltwoo6972 was that stated somewhere in the anime or manga, or is that what people speculate? Because if Gremmy can’t use his power on someone with higher SP, than that kinda undermines the whole idea of him being OP in the first place. If anything, his own spiritual pressure shouldn’t have limits anyway because that power could also be whatever he wants to imagine. There’s really no reason his spiritual pressure should pale in comparison to anybody tbh. I guess that’s the rabbit hole you end up in with powers like this.
Interesting thing is is on Twitter a animator on the anime Sakai I think his name was who is a veteran in effects actually showed a sketch/animation of yhwach’s reaction of the meteor which obv didn’t make the ep. Did they just not have enough time to add more scenes in because of the chapter count or is it because they didn’t want to and it was intentional.
27:00 this is to emphasize the fact that Gremmy is VERY combat inexperienced, keeping him locked up for so long has DEFINITELY stifled his imagination.
Haschwalth’s reaction is by far the most important one, you would never cut that, the point is that everybody’s afraid, the Quincy king is not in his ultimate form i.e. even he’s at risk, that’s the point, this guy is unbelievably powerful!! Hell he doesn’t even have a holy form, he’s Kenpachi, he has unlimited potential w/o the needed disposition or loyalty, which makes him the ultimate wildcard. By removing the reactions, you totally watered down the threat that he poses, the tension of the scene and the stakes of the battle. PS- Yachiru’s battle scene was awesome
GREAT VIDEOOOOOO, AGREED with pretty much everything:) last weeks rukia vs as noidt is phenomenal this was was great but not as spectacular as i hoped but am still happy. enjoy ur night
Thank you so much for your consideration of us anime only fans and spoilers I cannot overstate that, I enjoy your breakdowns of Bleach but there is still a lot I have not seen so I try to be careful.
I also miss the reiatsu crushing effects but I think Kubo toned it down because most characters involved are captain level at that point. Only Ichibei and Yuha could crush people like that by now and Ichibei would rather giant hand people away and Yuha just blasts people with actual reiatsu blasts. The last scene that kinda showcased reiatsu pressure was Yama's bankai on Royd and Hashwalth
This is the official description of Gremmy's death: "In the end, he imagined power that could overcome Zaraki Kenpachi and made it his own, but because he couldn't completely imagine a body that was able to withstand that power, it resulted in his own self-destruction. He awakened from his dreams and his brain ceased all function." So basically, once Gremmy's body sustains enough dmg, his Brain will "wake up" and he wont be able to imagine anymore no matter what.
I genuinely feel they shouldve gone the opposite route with this battle. Instead of cutting content, make it longer and split it over two. Maybe have the 'Vanishing Point' battle be a bit longer, add a few more 'warm up' attacks between Gremmy and Kenpachi, before starting the meteor scene. Have the first episode end with the Shikai activation, and Kenpachi's form and new Shikai illuminated by the falling rubble. Then have Part 2 continue the fight from there, with a slight cut to show the diced remains of the meteor causing havok below, and then resuming the fight. Have their final confrontation go on for longer, with some new attacks and challenges thrown at the revamped Kenpachi. Nobody would be upset at getting more Kenpachi OR Gremmy screentime I think. I dunno. Cutting out half of the buildup to fit it into a single episode just doesnt feel right. If they need more content, you acould easily show how mundane Gremmy's life was previously. Everyone fears him. Everyone dies so quickly. He's then sealed away with nothing to do. And now, hes free, hes having fun. Hes... and then that's when you have his imagination become his undoing with the attempt to copy Kenpachi's strength.
That moment when a fake sternritter gets a splash screen but two members of squad zero don't. edit: Regarding Gremmy's brain form, I'm guessing you could compare it to waking up from a dream, or perhaps the reverse, or maybe even going comatose. If it's still alive, there's nothing to link it to the external world. I'm hoping we'll get a short scene of someone carrying it off remarking on it having no reishi left or something, and what a grim existence that must be.
13:13, I feel like, due to Kenpachi giving her a name, solidified her as more than just a fragment of nozarashi, but as in a hybrid, similar to the zanpakuto found at oetsu's palace. If zanpakuto have their own rietsu and soul of their own, its not impossible for them to use a zanpakuto on their own...
Also, addressing the death of the brain. I always thought it was psychic/spiritual feedback from the link between the body and the brain that killed the brain.
Thank you! And 'The Visionary' is probably technically the 'strongest' ability (outside of The Almighty), but given Gerard and Lille's other qualities, like being extremely proficient soldiers in their own right where Gremmy doesn't have a clue, I'd say they're 'stronger'.
@@MrTommo2304 you are welcome and thanks for responding i was hoping there would be a future video of how strong the schutzstaffel is compared to him would even Hashwalth even have trouble fighting him?

What did you think of the biggest battle of cour 2 so far? Were you impressed with Kenpachi's long-awaited Shikai reveal, and did Kenpachi vs Gremmy live up to the hype? Let me know your thoughts!
I think kenni vs gremmy was the best yet but I'm waiting for ichibei vs yhawach and can't waittt❤❤
The pacing was a bit rough as usual, but the nozarashi reveal was really well done
It was pretty badass but it felt like it went by really fast
No doubt Kempachi vs Gremmy but I still think Ichibe vs Yhwach will be better than Kempachi vs Gremmy
i've read this arc when it was being released weekly, I've started to re read the chapters again and i've notice the pacing in the manga was quick too. my thing is that i was hoping that the anime would expand on the enemies back stories in the Anime, but feel like the enemies appears and quickly get's killed off . i still don't understand Gremmy. what is his back story , i want to know more about him.
I felt the symbolism about this fight made it much better as well.
@@TheFallen_29
Agreed
But then also is able to right after just imagine the thoughts of his own death away, and still somehow dies 😂 none of it makes sense
She did slash his chest
kenpachi immediately understood the Visionary powers of Gremmy. that's why he also used psychological warfare against gremmy. the reason why he never lost is because gremmy was passively imagining Kenpachi to be an unstoppable monster. kenpachi was actually getting buffed through the fight

That and Askins picnic basket (and maybe Pepe)
Zaraki is always a delight whenever he shows up!! And his smile while cutting the meteor showed how he was enjoying himself 😂
When his face lit up that cracked me up so much. His face glowed grinning like a psycho Cheshire cat and he jumped over Gremmy's head. It was like he was saying,"Move b**** I see a bigger object, I'm slicing it up!"😂
lol seeing Kenny fight is like watching the bigger brother you never had beat up your bullly with ease
I think Gremmy believing Zaraki to be a monster is what caused him to lose. His strength was literally his main weakness.
I think he tried to reach zarakis full power and what happened to him would happen to anyone including zaraki himself, he's just too op at this point, didn't everyone pretty much know that zaraki would be at the top when he got his bankai? Only captain in bleach history to not have a bankai? Kenpachi is him.
I liked when he almost lost because he imagined that he would when he couldn't heal himself fast enough
it is what made him lose. even zaraki points this out
Gremmy's power is amazing...but difficult. You are at the point where high level characters are at least near light speed. It would be hard to vividly imagine anything useful in the time it takes them to close the distance. On top of that, morbid curiosity could be fatal.
its also difficult to fight an opponent with plot armor thicker than aizen's ego

Absolutely missed opportunity
I think that works well in the context of the manga but so many reactions would slow down the pacing of the fight. Kubo stated there would be changes to the source materials to better the pacing & I feel that's one of them. I feel he did it to where If you want to reminisce in that minor detail, the original source material is there for that purpose.

A comment I completely agreed with on Reddit:
I'll do my best to explain Gremmy, his powers and limitations.
"There is nothing in this world that I cannot cut"
- Zaraki kenpanchi
Gremmy is a character that can mess up and win against most characters in the show but it's too bad that the first enemy he had to fight was zaraki, a monster that cuts through anything..

@@IchigoKurosakitheSalvationIt absolutely is a major loss. The meteor lost a lot of it's impact precisely because we lacked those reactions.

Wrong
What poll
Loved it on the whole, specific pacing issues aside. Bleach has been on a roll these last few weeks and next episode will no doubt continue that!
Honestly, he made probably the biggest attack he could imagine against him and zaraki cut it like butter. I would be freaked out too.
Kenpachi cuts through space....which is intangible so....good luck with that?
@@nahte123456 There isn’t anything he can’t cut. I love how this series takes that concept to damn near ridiculous extremes with kenpachi 😂 that’s why this battle was pretty perfect conceptually tbh.
Now aizen vs kenpachi would break the internet
The way Kenpachi’s inner shield up as he cut the meteor and release his Shikai was not just epic, it was also a big foreshadow of his Bankai
Its about ur riatsu not the visionary infinite riatsu infinite potential
A completely null point however since Gremmy's clones aren't really clones, they're literally another him spawned from nothing and *explicitly* double his capabilities at no cost to himself. Meaning; nothing's stopping him from infinitely making more of himself until his power exceeds whatever he's facing even if it *was* more powerful to begin with.
Needs 2 clones for a meteor? Just make a thousand clones, now there are 500 meteors and nothing keeps him from going infinite.
@@officiallyjan8596 He also couldn't imagine a body to withstand Kenpachi's power though. So there is a limit.
@@crispycreammcfly4782 It's not that he couldn't, it's that he just *didn't.*
Gremmy himself states explicitly that he imagined himself with Kenpachi's power and *succeeded* in manifesting it, meaning it's not a power beyond The Visionary's ability to manipulate, but he *didn't* imagine it in a body that could handle it and that's why his body then started dying.

Aizen survived Soi Fon's shikai because his reiatsu was stronger. I think Kenpachi couldn't be affected directly by Gremmy's power due to his high level of reiatsu. Gremmy had to create exterior threaths (like a meteor.)
Yashiru's reiatsu was presumably weaker, so he could affect her directly, by transforming her bones into cookies.
I think Gremmy can't impose his imagination onto Kenpachi. His high reiatsu reinforces Ken chan's belief in himself and his own personal capacities to overcome challenges.
Exactly
Fax

Certainly not some puny bombs lol
But I like how someone in some other reaction explained it. "Kenpachi was affected by space even as Shinigami simply because Gremmy, in that moment, also imagined what outer space will do to a body, boiling off fluid in low pressure and eventually dying."
So Gremmy might actually have imagined what being in space would feel like which caused Kenpachi all the physical damage in the process. It makes complete sense. Which also concludes that YES, he could have imagined Kenpachi dead, but he didn't want to do it that way.
And I presume, someone who can strike a meteor into pieces can also harden his muscles enough to build pressure and survive space too?

lets go baby, another 50+ minute Bleach discussion from MrTommo, goodbye to the next hour
Once he became Gremmy he eventually forgot his original self making Gremmy the new identity of the brain and once that persona died he can’t think anymore.
I've always felt he didn't affect kenpachi directly because his high spiritual pressure prevented it.
i believe gremmy didnt create a new body because he believes that if his physical body dies then he would actually die, so basically he imagined his own death because he truly believed that his imagination was reaching its limit when it really was not
The removal of the entire battlefield's reaction to the meteor really diminished the scope and the intensity of what was about to happen and a shame. Somehow it made the meteor look like a cookie. When I read the manga nearly a decade ago, I remembered this scene in epic proportions, but in the anime, I could imagine Zaraki simply slicing the meteor in half simply by removing his eye patch and not needing to release his shikai.
The fight made Gremmy seem much weaker than the source material. Rushed through all the high points.
You’re tripping he threw him into the vacuum of space, his powers are limitless . He’s just the wrong Quincy to use them.
@janno278 why respond to me if you're just going to insult me and then not even respond to what I said. You're the one that's tripping. At least address what I said and not go off on your own...
@@janno278Dawg they're talking about how a lot of context for Gremmy was cut
Dont lie
Kenpachi did not struggle with him to be fair it was just spread out to give it more epicness it could be said this should have been in 2 episodes, definately rushed
Plot-armor so thick Gremmy couldn't even imagine winning
Yes sir love the long review keep it coming lets get one of these to 2 hours
What’s wrong with uryu and haschwalth’s powers?
Tsukishima enters the chat
no. the entire premise of the fight is that gremmy didnt want to use his powers on kenpachi. he wanted to fight kenpachi so he was only going to construct thing with his imagination to fight kenpachi. he could of used his powers on kenpachi. but due to kepnachis hubris he wanted to teach kenpachi a lesson. this is all explained clearly in the manga.
"where'd you come from kid" as Yachiru reaches out and touches the blade, amazing touch.
I always thought Gremmy ended up imagining a world where he couldn't imagine anymore, and thus made it a reality, killing his own power himself
This fight is like Wolverine beating Franklin Richards to me. I didn't know how to feel lol
Your videos butter My biscuits thank you
My guess as to why the brain didn’t create another body could be because while the body that died was a product of his own imagination, before creating the body, Gremmy hadn’t really truly gained consciousness until then.
His brain is Very much alive. His body is what reached the limit as he can't "imagine" a strong enough body for the "power" he imagined
Just caught up to the anime the other day and gotta say. I love the way the anime introduces the titles card of the episode
This episode is the opposite of the current One Piece Episode where they add alot to 1 chapter instead of crunching alot of chapters
Zaraki has been one of my favourite captains ever since his first reveal, bonus was he had the same voice actor as Jiraiya
Akaino
Awesome video like usual! I think the fight showcases kubo's style of writing the best in the series. He said he thinks of cool scenarios for his characters them makes the fight around it. What better way for a fan favourite like kempachi to return with an out of the box fight like this. About kempachi cutting space, I highly doubt it. It opens too many plot holes down the line. Cutting space is the same as warping it. This would invalidate the 45 or so chapters when they need to reach the palace later on, as kempachi could just cut a way there.
The royal palace isnt easy to reach
I've always thought that Gremmy's death was due to him imagining himself a dead man. Gremmy went all in, his last attempt to attack Kenpachi was out of cope, by that point Gremmy probably figured out he would never defeat his opponent and he himself would die as a consequence, either in combat against Zaraki or punished by Yhwach's hand.
Next episode will be kubo's favorite group of girls The Bambi's I'm actually really hyped by least hope we get the aftermath of the meteor being destroyed everyone's reactions after
Same. I also hope we get Liltotto reflecting over Gremmy's death.
Shoutout to Maki Maki for being one of the smartest lower seat officers.
Having the lyrics: ‘Far too strong to resist, there is nowhere to hide from the force that will tear them apart and banish their souls.’ playing over scenes of others reacting to the meteor would have really drove the message home about how terrifying Gremmy really is/was.
keep in mind trhat adding scenes and VA for the characters costs lots of money too and probably the budget for the episode was already too high
Didn’t even realise mini moustache was in this ep! That’s a nice little touch
Ack, I can't believe we only have six left. Time is flying by.
Until now i was hoping for more.
Knowing kubo had more time now.
And why?
I think the brain in the jar 50:42 was just a high-class Easter egg/reference.
Boltzmann Brain 🧠
GREAT VIDEOOOOOO, AGREED with pretty much everything:) last weeks rukia vs as noidt is phenomenal this was was great but not as spectacular as i hoped but am still happy. enjoy ur night
Since yachiru is a zanpakuto spirit
I'm pretty sure sanpu kenju are just spirits who hang around with her
Thank you so much for your consideration of us anime only fans and spoilers I cannot overstate that, I enjoy your breakdowns of Bleach but there is still a lot I have not seen so I try to be careful.
He awakened from his dreams and his brain ceased all function."
So basically, once Gremmy's body sustains enough dmg, his Brain will "wake up" and he wont be able to imagine anymore no matter what.
Official?
From where?
@@no..2756CFYOW description of Gremmy and his death.
I imagine (lol) that the cage Gremmy was locked in was his own mind. He didn't have a physical body other than his brain, after all.
Also, addressing the death of the brain. I always thought it was psychic/spiritual feedback from the link between the body and the brain that killed the brain.
6:51 Not rose catching a stray 😭
Kenpachi is unimaginably strong, and if there's no will to fight there's no life for a brain...
I wished to see everyone's reaction to the meteor as in: oh shit this will turn the war around
Given Gerard and Lillie barro exist is Gremmy the strongest?
I feel like Grammy's body exploding like that had to hurt so bad for his overpowered imagination that it really did force his brain into death shutdown
