    I think this must have been a very tough decision. Your success in doubles this year has been great, but in my opinion potentially you are even a much better singles player, but keeping in mind that doubles may be easier on the body. Difficult with injuries and financial situation (family obligations are even more important).
    I am sure you know that Karue wrote an important tweet about the prize money for lower ranked players also several days ago (made some tennis headlines). Maybe one thing ATP/ WTA, ITF (and other tennis organizations) can do is to help out to double the prize money for all the challengers and futures tournaments immediately to give some relief for those who hover in 100-400 ranks (both in doubles and singles). It is complicated of course. Anyway, good to take some time off to get a better perspective; and best wishes 🙏

    • @mrnowak2835
      @mrnowak2835 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +8

      For doubles you need to be probably top 70 and those players still mix it up with challengers. Piotr matuszewski whos a doubles player just inside the top 100 only got to play twice in a 250 this year. Simon would have to halve his ranking to play 250s consistently.

    Excellent career Simon and I am glad you are rightly proud of getting to the level you got. In my 20s I was a professional poker player and travelled 40 weeks of the year so I found this video very relatable.
    I'm not sure if it makes good content, but selfishly I'd love a series on how a mid-30s amateur can improve their game, how to train properly, how to eat properly, how to deal with various injuries (why does my wrist elbow and shoulder always hurt?). I'd also really enjoy a video on the different factors that effect a tennis game - surface and weather being obvious ones, altitude, speed of court, even line judges - and how you adjust based on those factors.

    Wise decision. You must love the lifestyle considering the money level you play at. If that fades, better find something else. Top 1000 singles and 160 doubles is no small achievement but a dramatic rise in level to really big money is highly unlikely. You are a smart guy and will find a new thing.

    It’s a very expensive sport too. I remembered you mentioned the cost of traveling, and the rewards just isn’t there. Or more accurately, ur reward money goes directly to ur next tournaments cost. It’s a never ending financial cycle. Unless ur in the top 100… it’s very hard and it’s very grindy. Like most men like myself, we want profit, we want results. But sometimes when we give it our all, it’s just not enough. But I love ur videos man. Thank u for sharing ur experience

    I think it's a sas reflection on the ATP that a player in the top 200 (singles or doubles) is only making enough to get by. In my opinion they shoukd flatten the prize money out more to reward those that are working just as hard as the top 50. Good luck with your next challenge.

    Everyone knows the dirty little secret of pro tennis. It’s a modern gladiator sport. Win or die, basically. The ATP and WTA should seriously consider changes to the remuneration and support systems. Prize money at the majors and 1000 level tournaments should be redistributed. All QF and up rounds should reduce prize money by 25-30% and move it to increase money for the earlier rounds. The tours should have guaranteed low cost health insurance for every player, including in futures and challengers, who plays a minimum of like ten tournaments.
    If they are truly “player’s associations” they should charge a membership fee of 5% of gross earnings so that services would be available for all players.

    • @zepintoferreira8431
      @zepintoferreira8431 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I'd go even further and say that prize money should be distributed in a pyramid: Those at the bottom should get way more than those at the top, who will make easily enough money from sponsorships and pay-to-play. But even then, that extra would only be spent on more resources to climb to the top. It's the nature of star-driven markets.

    I think you're making the right choice. I have to say I love following your matches the most of all the TH-cam creators, but I think from a financial maturity point of view it was probably time to call it a day. Make a family enjoy your life. I do think people playing in the low levels of tennis don't quite realize the purpose of those levels and it's to actually make people give up on their dream which is extremely difficult to do if they paid well enough that you could make a decent living at 300 level, then you would have people that never stop. They would just make a career of playing 300 and the purpose is to find the stand out players and they will
    Move up and make a good living and then the rest that realize they have to drop out.
    Getting somebody who is competitive enough and good enough to be 400th in the world to give up their dream of playing professional tennis is not easy. You have to make it very financially penalizing to keep playing.

    I personally think that the pro tennis life isn't worth it (regardless of passion) unless you can become a singles top 100 player by around age 23. If you manage to achieve that milestone in that timeframe, you prove to yourself and to others that you have the talent, ambition, resilience, and backing (of all sorts) to compete with the elite athletes that are actually making money from the sport. Stretching a pro career out any further than that without the necessary results seems like it can risk massive opportunity costs in other areas of life

    Bit unexpected after seeing how you guys were on a roll in doubles this season! But I can see the point of being close to 30 and still not actually earning any money is not a desirable situation to be in. Good luck with your future, hope you will push for the Chasing Gold series to continue!

    You're clearly a smart articulate guy who will be successful at whatever you do. Hope you keep the channel going the way you were filming your matches and practice at ground level was kind of innovative. Wonder f you had a chat with Karue Sell before making your decision as he took a break and is now seeing how high he can get at 30.

    Question, how do you break even when your career earnings are $55k and change? Or are you including your YT channel and coaching, etc.?

    exactly what Karue Sell was talking about lately re: money for 100+ ranked players. it's extremely tough and most cannot survive playing challengers (if you're lucky). hell, how many potential stars had drop out because of lack of financing? we'll never know...

    Can't really blame you when I hear about the financial aspect. Watching all your "winnings" just melt away every year, just to be able to continue playing... And that's while being ranked in the top 160? We're not shaking off the "tennis is for rich people" stigma any time soon.

    Simon,
    Thank you for taking us on this journey. I was a top junior in my region and I ended up getting injured an having to give up competitive tennis. Watching you and your career has been such a fun ride for me to think about what could have been and I appreciate how you always kept it honest with us. You didn't just show us the glamorous parts of pro tennis, you showed us what it REALLY is like on tour. Excited to keep following you in whatever you do going forward. Thanks again mate.

    It would be great if you would upload instructional videos. You are really good at explaining things in a simple way.

    truth is if you're not comfortably top 100 in singles in the world, you won't be able to make ends meet. thats how brutal tennis is.

    I’ve really enjoyed watching your doubles matches more than most of the espn pro tennis coverage. I think It’s a side of tennis that’s way more interesting to hardcore tennis fans. All the best in the future!!

    I became a better tennis player watching your match play. So I wanted to take this time to thank you for the uploads. Just as you mentioned about financial my parents never supported me in highschool. I only had my high school varsity coach but he taught me how to love the game. I want to reach a high level of tennis so that I would become a great coach.
