    For those who want to build a lantern but don't know anything about soldering and programming LEDs (like me) Walmart sells some fantastic little LED strobe lights in the Halloween section - there's a basic strobe, a color-changing strobe that starts out slow, speeds up, then slows back down (I'm using that in the head of my banshee) and a yellow flicker strobe. They're $3, and totally worth it - very bright and long-lasting.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's a great tip Becky, thanks for sharing!

    • @Dee_Just_Dee

      You can also find LED strobes in the automotive section year-round. The neat thing about those ones is that they're hooked up to a pair of 9V batteries right in their packaging for demonstration purposes, so you can just copy that setup for your own purposes.

    As someone who owns one, if you didn't have the money for or the skill to build the LED set up, you could probably just use a compact LED camping/survival lantern, I own two and have used them for a similar purpose with lighting pumpkins on Halloween with coloured plastic to defuse the light, of course they won't flicker but, would still make for a good prop.

    I'm in the midst of a large LED programming project (with hundreds of LEDs!). A technique to cut down on the soldering that we're using is to zig zag the LED strips back and forth instead of cutting them and adding leads and connecting them together. It makes the programming a bit more complex, so it may not be a net time savings, but it is removing hundreds of (somewhat delicate) solder connections for us!
    I'll have to work on a video to show the technique.

  • @dav1dsm1th
    @dav1dsm1th 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool. Some drawn/painted on lines, or glued on strips, to break up the window panels into smaller sections may have been very effective too.

    I had done the same kind of prop some time ago, albeit less beautiful and more functional, instead of a foam column i had used pvc with aluminium tape all around to dissipate heat faster, the more expensive the LEDs are, the more important this trick becomes as you want your leds to live as long as possible :p
    awesome job tho, love the flickering

  • @AndrewHasara
    @AndrewHasara 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As usual, it was a fun video and I was glad I watched it!
    Some thoughts :
    Isn't that the second or third time that bandsaw has broken a blade this season? It's good that you have a replacement, but it may be time to retire "Bitey".
    Acrylic and EVA foam are easy to cut with a laser cutter, and you are very good with making electronic patterns. Can you talk a sponsor into getting a nice laser cutter for your shop?
    For people who are trying to make that quicker and cheaper (but maybe not as well) there are lots of flickering electronic tea lights at the dollar store!

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I replaced the blades yesterday and gave everything a tune-up. It all seems to be working great now. =D
      We actually already have a laser cutter in the shop. For this project it would have actually taken me longer to draw a vector pattern and have the laser cut it out than it was to just cut it out by hand.

    • @clonkex
      @clonkex 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WilliamJakespeareProps No, they definitely wouldn't. You'd need some pretty ridiculously powerful magnets to interfere with electrics. Even platter-based hard drives are not easily damaged by magnets. Really the only thing you have to worry about is old CRT screens. Putting a magnet on the screen of a CRT makes it go all funny colours, and they have to be degaussed after that.

    Instead of soldering pins onto the ends of your power leads, I'd recommend getting a set of DuPont crimpers and connectors! They electrically isolate every component and make working with Arduino a lot easier!
    The crimper I use:www.amazon.com/VOLADOR-Connector-Ratcheting-Compression-0-1-1-0MM²/dp/B076K97JRV/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1537252530&sr=8-7&keywords=dupont+crimper&dpID=41zY5DHr2ML&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
