*A very very important thing I've learned is to not discard certain pieces even if I don't like them.* I'm a person who buys something only if I am completely in love with it because fashion is an investment, an extension of my personality. It has to be perfect. But there were certain items in my closet that I didn't like at all and I used to discard them whenever I decluttered. *What I've come to realise is that it's not the item itself, it's the way you style it.* For eg. I have a long maroon top. I always wore it with jeans (black/blue) and always felt like an elderly matron. But recently I tried it on with shorts and viola, it instantly made me look 10x better. So the problem wasn't the piece, it was what I wore _with it._
Through the years I’ve learned to listen to myself and embrace my different style personalities. I used to think I had to pick one style, but that always felt so off and restrictive. Now I know that I like a minimalist look of clean lines (a slight Eurochic / Eileen Fisher look) with a slight edge and trendiness. At age 66 it all just works for me.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I love any help you can offer me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It’s refreshing to hear someone say wear what you feel best in. Your weight, body type, skin tone, etc DO NOT MATTER. Thanks Emily. We should all flaunt our individual beauty!
I agree let's join nudist communities... 😜 JK... I was raised to believe 💯 that looks aren't important its what's in your heart and mind that counts. don't judge a book by its cover or a person by they're color and or shape.
Love this. I can't be pigeonholed into a specific style category that many capsule wardrobe groups use. Definitely have multiple personalities in fashion. Today I am wearing leather leggings with a boho/girlie white pin tuck shirt with slipon pointed toe sneaker loafers. Yesterday was BF jeans and cashmere and converse.
I feel amazing in all black. I have black hair and dark brown eyes and every time I'm in black people ask me if I have a special occasion to go to, it just suits me. Loving the channel. Love from London 💋
I have the most difficulty with embracing different styles. Super feminine or frilly styles have always been something I wanted to wear, but once I felt so uncomfortable. Now I wear one frilly item with something a little edgier. Perfect balance for me, and I no longer feel boxed in. :)
This is so helpful... I've spent way too long letting other people tell me I can't or shouldn't wear this or that. I recently purged my closet to declutter and I've been getting into sewing, thrifting, upcycling. But I've been a bit lost on where to start figuring out my style again. This was a good reminder to start with what I'm drawn to. Thanks!
So glad that the video was helpful and sounds like good timing with your recent declutter. I've got more personal style videos coming out, so stay stuned. I also have a playlist that includes them all.
Just wanted to put this out there. Your channel is making an impact in peoples lives. I was sexually abused as a kid and from that I learnt that my body and my clothes were at fault for the rape and abuse. I am now 10 years later at 23 searching for what my style is as I’m so tired of blaming my body and wearing clothes that make me feel unattractive(in order to give myself a false safety that people won’t notice me and hurt me again.) time for change, thanks for your videos, there really helpful in my journey!
You go girl! I hate victim blaming. Even if you were wearing a bikini down a city street, that is no excuse for someone to attack and rape you! There used to be a public service announcement that made me angry. It showed a guy walking along a street checking to see if car doors were locked, and basically blamed people who didn’t lock their cars for having them systole not. Most people don’t know if cars are locked or not. Only thieves check for locked doors. They are crooks, not the car owner.
Thank you Emily...this is all so true. 'Multiple style personalities' .🙄...I totally identify with this and it has always been my struggle...how to marry them together. I think I'm finally beginning to just accept the complexity and your advice has given me the confidence to run with this!
Love that Vera! And yes, it is hard sometimes to figure out how to marry them all together. Maybe I'll do a video on that, once I figure out a concise way to communicate it. Thanks Vera!
I’m not buying clothes this year, I’m working on what I have - I’ve decluttered some of my winter items, which I thought I needed. Realistically I’m working through and leaving only items I love x
SO TRUE about confidence and not second guessing yourself. I was doing a polished, minimal, classic look for a few years; but I was always feeling that something wasn't clicking as it should. And I was watching influencers like Natalie Martin and Thanks to Fashion and drooling over their style; but deep down felt that I just wasn't "cool" enough to pull it off. Once I threw caution to the wind and started adding in more interesting, off beat pieces; it came together like peas & carrots; and my signature style just seemed to slot into place. I also love Alison Bornstein for her 3 words. It helps so much to put those words to your style to truly define it.
i love watching these video's so much. Thank you for your advice on this topic. In particualy the advice :wear that scare's you. being diagnosed with breastcancer i lost all of my hair during chemo, and i struggle with wearing short hair. Although this is an old video it really helped me accepting what happend.
I love how you explain style personalities. What I learn is that the more I understand and own my essence, the easier and more fun I have with the looks I pull together. I see it as a way of acknowledging the self. I went out last night and got lots of comments on my look which meant a lot to me because I dress intentionally as a stylish pattern interrupting rebel. Thanks !
Hi Emily Loved your advice, I do feel like I don’t want to be just one style. Sometimes I like being girly, girl and other days I like wearing my Dr Martins and baggy jeans 😊
I grew up not giving much thought to what I’d wear, I guess mostly because I did not feel comfortable with my body and felt like clothes did not work for me. And I was really prejudiced towards certain items; like, I read that as pear-shaped, I should wear A lines, and felt like bodycon/ bias cut/ pencil dresses and skirts would not work for me and I didn’t even try them. Until I did, and loved this line, it honestly feels the most flattering to me. I’m 31 and trying to figure out what works for me, gravitating towards feminine styles and masculine elements, classic styles and edgy elements at the same time, but really, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that there really are no rules!!
I found this video, very helpful, certainly! Even though I’ve worked in fashion, and have a degree, in fashion design, that was lifetime’s ago, then I changed careers and went in a different direction. I can always style, other individuals. But, when it comes to myself, I am almost paralyzed, with fear. Because I can’t narrow down, which features to play up, etc., I stick to joggers and white sneakers. So your channel, has been a blessing and you have struck me, as being very relatable, without the pretentious attitude. That others are known for. So, this is certainly a serendipitous moment. Thank you, Cassandra
I love this perception that you can wear what ever makes you feel fabulous. The idea that was predominated the fashion industry to be out there that you could not mix colours like red and green is over, thankfully.
My personal style consist of athlesure and edgy graphic tees and leapord print and some florals plus basics. I have a friend who dresses up everyday. That's not me anymore. She said you need to quit wearing t-shirts and dress up it upset me I love what I wear and it suits my lifestyle. Your right don't wear certain things because someone else wants you too.
Exactly! What makes someone else feel amazing might not be what makes you feel amazing. Thanks so much for sharing your personal style with us, love hearing about it. Sounds very cool and effortless :-)
I’m so glad to have found you. This will be a huge help toward revamping myself. I also need to build a travel clothing set for cruising! I always over pack and I want to avoid it.
I very much agree with wearing what might scare us, every time I do, someone also compliments me too! Then I feel like, yessss. Even sometimes my husband has said he did not like a dress once. I wore it anyway, got tons of compliments, and I remember he looked at me and said, I had made the right choice to wear it, and that it looked really good. I am plus sized and do not always follow the rules for us, and when I break them, it feels glorious.
Always great content... Thanks, Emily! 😁❤️ As a lifelong redhead, I have gotten used to having people look at me, so I wear what I enjoy. Maybe it's a funky style or a color that isn't a "redhead color". I am here for all of it. 😁❤️💯
Emily, I completely understand your multiple style personalities. I love goth, vintage 1930-1950s dresses and suits, Victoriana, steampunk, 1970s punk, etc. In the end, I am quite lazy, and I don't like a lot of fussy details, so I keep is simple, but I am looking for ways to add a bit of what I love to a more minimalist wardrobe. Goth/punk is easy with some cool boots. Pencil skirts are a good nod to the 1940s and 1950s.
Yes, love that combo. Yea we don't have to go too literal with each style personality. But doing just what you did, bringing in details or nods to them. Thanks for sharing Gina!!
what i found is most important if we want to find our style is to find who we are truly, and for those who are into spirituality full on, as i am, that takes a bit of meditation and mindfulness practice... when we are reconnected with our true self, somehow clarity comes and confidence as well... also it's when fun begins ;) because we then feel more free and eager to play and experiment with our looks and style :)
I wonder what sort of revolutionary type of thing I'll do with my style. I'm 27 and I've never cared even a little about what clothes people had and in general had absolute lack of fashion sense. I just would ware the first thing I grabbed every time. So now more out of curiosity than anything I'm checking into styles to find out why they are so important for other people and maybe try my own. I love the idea of controversial blending and bohemian style. honestly I prefer things that are comfortable have meaning to it and or a purpose... lots of pockets + hidden pockets + colors based on time of year and mood as well as things that inspire others to think differently and or laugh.
I love your music choices so much! Have you seen a video before that you just had to turn off, because the music clashed with the talking, etc.? Not yours! Great tips! Thank you 🙏
Good advice¡¡ i've found that whenever i wear something that makes me feel good it also elevates my confidence. I liked your advice on trying things that scare you, i don't exactly do that but i've realised that i like bringing one item from a different style category to what i'm wearing, for example a boho bag with a classic outfit. Experimenting with curiosity and see what comes out. I'm having fun as you can see. 😉
Hi I happened to find this by accident. This is something I have been wanting help with so thank you very much. From what I have seen on the video I like your style. You are probably the only female I ever seen that is beautiful with short hair. Your face is freaking perfect. Dead serious.
I was wondering if you could make a vid about decluttering our fantasy self wardrobe? For example: Years ago I bought a couple of beautiful dresses for special events. I never wore them. Not once. I ended up giving them away because I figured out that I don't go to special events, & if I ever did I could just wear a dress that's already in my closet & just zhuzh it up a bit with accessories or a different hair-do. Hoping I'm not the only one who has purchased clothes for those "occasions" or 'lifestyle" that never materialize, lol!
Excellent work! Enjoy your videos and have been binge-watching since I discovered your channel. Would love to see your take on fashion pieces that are universially flattering across all body types, if there is such a module. Keep the great content coming!!!!
No matter what: we get influenced (by all sorts of sources) and we make mistakes in our style choices: the thing is really using these mistakes to help define our style. Also I pay attention to spontaneous comments from friends, family, co workers when they say: "Oh! you look good in this" or "That outfit suits you perfectly": that might help define the shapes, colors that suit you and obviously you like as well as you are wearing it! I think colours and shapes are important and we should definitely try it on before buying (even shoes!) that's why I am not a fan of online buying for clothing....
The style personality is definitely a thing. I love dresses with combat boots but I also love high rise black slacks with a wild print button down or turtlneck tops with leopard sneakers. I go back and forth to pin it down to one. But your saying I don’t have to choose and can embrace both. Is that what you are saying?
You don't need to choose, that is right, embrace each look. You sound sort of like you have a similar style to me, you like classic balanced out with Edge. So you could focus on that general combo and let your self be free with in that. But if one day you decide you want to go more classic, do it or another day you want to go full edgy look, go for it. I think I'll do a video on this as I've been getting lots of comments on it. But let me know if you have any other questions.
LOVE!! One of my all time favorite boots for so many reasons. Amazing craftsmanship and great quality, will last for years. And the style is so edgy yet so timeless and goes with everything. Hope that helps!
You have some really great advice! However, most of it doesn’t pertain once you get over 60 which is so disappointing! I love the boho look now that I see it has been reinvented from the 70s. But at 62 I feel silly wearing ruffles and tiny flower flowy prints. I find it hard to wear what I feel good in!
Let me know if there is any topics I can speak to in some videos to help you change your mind. I think that personal style can be had at any age. I bet you look fabulous in those ruffles and flowery prints. Thanks for sharing with us.
Boho doesn’t have to look girly actually with hair, shoes, make - up , bag You can control that IF you want and go more edgy, artsy or classical or even goth
I'm transitioning to middle age, so I'm re-evaluating my closet. My shape is a large bust with a small waist and wide hips. In younger years, I could wear tight tops, but now it looks cheap. I looked to experts, who recommended peplum tops. I would have never worn these, but I took a chance and they are really fetching on me. Your advice is spot on! Take a risk. Listen to experts. Try things out.
Thank you for the video! Helpful! Quick thing! I think you are not looking straight at the camera .. it seems like you are talking to someone beside me. Just thought you might want to know !
OMG, my one friend used to say this all the time I can’t pull that off I can’t pull that off girl you choose to not pull that off Stop putting yourself in a box.
Amazing video. Going to listen10 times to make sure it sinks in. Isn't it interesting how powerful and boring the old rules were. I think those dead rules made people dead.
Emily, overall you look fantastic, but I feel you would look even better with either a super short bob, French bob or a pixie cut. Just my two cents worth as a man. Scott
I was watching you for the pass three day. Have you ever dress a rectangle but short under five feet mannequin? Challenging!,, that is ME for the whole life and still learning. Do you dress one please
I neeed to stop the hype i see something that i love how it looks then want to buy but don't like to wear it after i buy i neeed to really stop this lol

Hi Emily
Loved your advice, I do feel like I don’t want to be just one style. Sometimes I like being girly, girl and other days I like wearing my Dr Martins and baggy jeans 😊
I totally agree, I'm exactly the same. Thank you Lara!!
You the best explainer of fashion I have everrrrr seen in my whole life thanks a lot
This is a definitive, “mike-drop” intro to you. Really awesome!
Exactly, there are no rules!! Love it Amalia! You've discovered what you love, which I think is key. Thank you for sharing with us Amalia!!
That is so great to hear! Thank you Cassandra and welcome to the channel!
I love this perception that you can wear what ever makes you feel fabulous. The idea that was predominated the fashion industry to be out there that you could not mix colours like red and green is over, thankfully.
Yes, thank goodness! Thank you for your comment Rosemary!

I’m so glad to have found you. This will be a huge help toward revamping myself. I also need to build a travel clothing set for cruising! I always over pack and I want to avoid it.
Love the ending info, on multiple personal styles, according to mood. Very helpful. Another winning video.
Thank you! Such a lovely comment to receive :-)
Love that Shelli!! You break those rules!! :-)
Always great content... Thanks, Emily! 😁❤️
As a lifelong redhead, I have gotten used to having people look at me, so I wear what I enjoy.
Best advice I’ve heard! Love your channel👏🏾💯
Thank you Neisha! :-)

So you could focus on that general combo and let your self be free with in that. But if one day you decide you want to go more classic, do it or another day you want to go full edgy look, go for it. I think I'll do a video on this as I've been getting lots of comments on it. But let me know if you have any other questions.
But what if you like aspects of 15? 🤣 I find it difficult to choose a style the older I get. Glad I found your channel!
Great video
Such a good video! Thank you :)
Thank you Tanya!
Your opinion on your Mr. Dean boot? Seriously considering purchasing. Thanks Emily!
LOVE!! One of my all time favorite boots for so many reasons. Amazing craftsmanship and great quality, will last for years. And the style is so edgy yet so timeless and goes with everything. Hope that helps!
When I said "noise" at the same time....I *knew* that I found the right place!!
Ahhh love that! :-)
That's such an amazing piece!!!! If I could I'll give you 1000 👍
The best!!!!!!
make me to feel the fashion and style.
I’m almost 73. Get over dressing the way you should. Dress the way you love.
Do what makes you happy. That’s what your personal life journey is all about.
how could I go about building my own personal brand or even getting custom designed clothing?.
Yes, sometimes you have to get a little out of your comfort zone to really figure out what you like. Thanks for sharing your story Michelle!!
Thank you for the video! Helpful! Quick thing! I think you are not looking straight at the camera .. it seems like you are talking to someone beside me. Just thought you might want to know !
Am enjoying your content but would love some images of the things you talk about to give context.
I like slightly 'ugly' things. Wonder what style that is!
How about “the multiple facets of your style personality”?
Thank you Joey!
Being a man and wanting to change my wardrobe to only ladies clothes is a scary commitment. Would you say i'd still be able to pull it off
If that's what makes you feel the best version of yourself, then yes, you can definitely pull it off.
@@EmilyWheatley Appreciate the vote of confidence. Thank you.
I thought the intros started with "freshman friends" until accidental captions revealed it's actually "fashion friends." 😂🙈
Haha well I think that says more about my speaking ;-)
Lol, me too. Every single video, even tho I know now it’s “fashion”
I love your style, but I wish you showed more outfits.
How l wish you would do less talking and go straight to the point.😢😢😢😢
