This doesn't solve the problem. What if I don't have any other microphone? I want to use the microphone of the Airpods AND have the great quality sound. Also I want to be able to walk while I talk during meetings and not be glued to my desk or carry my laptop around with a separate microphone.

This fix isn't required anymore if you are on the current Windows 11 version build 22631.3593 or newer. Headphones work with DVD quality and the Microphone with Tape Recorder quality

tldr: disable AirPods Pro mic in windows settings: System > Sound > (click at the ‚>‘ next to AirPods Pro under „Input“ section) > click „Don’t Allow“

For my problem, I saw that windows had an audio enhancement feature automatically turned on. I just turned it off and my airpod's sound normal again

Hello, everyone! Just passing to tell you that, if you are somehow facing issues with airpods microphone on windows. I somehow was able to solve it, but unfortunately I don't know how exactly I did it.
But here it goes what I believe I did:
- update all your drivers
- remove / forget the device on Bluetooth settings
- pair it again
- put the earphones under the case
- open again (but letting they inside)
- hold the button (in the case) until the led becomes white (it will be recognized by windows now)
- on windows, pair it again, it should be visible
I was able to repair it somehow connecting it to another device, I tried ubuntu for while, then when I came back to windows, the airpods were somehow getting disconnected right after connect. So doing this procedure, the issue was somehow fixed and I noticed it by using Discord.
I had to deactivate the microphone through the external sound manager window (Don't know the name) to deactivate the mic and it instantly fixed it. Thanks.

When I disable the AirPods Pro 2’s microphone there is no sound at all..
1. I connect AirPods
2. I do what you showed on the video: Headset > Don’t Allow
3. The audio cuts off then there’s like a short click of sound of something I listen
4. Nothing plays at all

The lag sounds like an issue with your Bluetooth adapter in your computer.

Hi. I have the AirPods Pro 2nd gens, but for some reason whenever I open a multiplayer game, the audio level immediately goes up to 100 and becomes incredibly distorted. I tried disabling the mic, but it still happens. It is only with multiplayer games through PC Game Pass, not single player and not multiplayer games from Steam. I have absolutely no idea what is going on. When I go into the input settings, the format is tape recorder quality, and the volume slider is set to 100 for the mic. The audio quality that I'm hearing sounds like tape recorder quality and the volume goes up to 100, so I think that my PC is using my input settings whenever I open a game. Anybody know how to fix this?

I know the why - but I don't know how to fix it yet.
The why:
Windows thinks that the bandwidth for Bluetooth isn't there. So, when you are using a mic and a headphone over the same Bluetooth device, the quality of each is reduced to allow for that. In Windows 10, there was an option to make it ignore that. In Windows 11, there is not.
I do not know how to fix it yet.

For some reasons didnt work for me.. sound on my airpods pro 2 is still breaks like i can only hear 20% and the rest 80% it breaks cant make out anything from the audio. This is my new windows 11 i7 13th gen 16 gb DDR5 ram cant figure out what the issue is. Sound works fine on the laptop speakers and senheisser headphones but not on these bluetooth airpods. Any suggestions please? Thank you

First of all, thank you for this post which helps better understand why this quality drop occurs when using earpods with Windows.
For the record, I've experienced the same problems with my Marshall Major III headphones, also re-produced with Apple earpods.
Clearly, as explained in the post, it's a Bluetooth operating problem on Windows 10 and/or 11.
No problem with MacOS.
Nevertheless, I have a question, if you use a specific bleutooth dongle for your earpods, and only for their use, can it solve the problem?
It's mentioned that you can use the jabra dongle, but are we sure that this dongle can accept peering from non-jabra equipment?

So we can't use its microphone on Windows as we use on Macs. That's sad.
I had zero difference (Sept 11 2023, AirPods Pro Gen 2). It sounds "ok", but if toggling this mic option has no impact at all. By "ok", I mean, it's not garbled, but if I load up the very same TH-cam video on my iPhone, pair these AirPods Pro Gen 2 to that, it makes me feel like I want to go back to wired headphones.
I suppose I can try the Bluetooth adapter idea, but can anybody tell me, WHY this is the situation? If not, no problem, but as of Sept 11 2023 here, I can say that this fix did not change the audio quality at all. I've no idea what my Airpods firmware and the like are at though.
