Hey John, maybe for some video ideas if you won't be out on the fields as much, perhaps some behind the scenes kinda stuff. Finding permissions, cleaning, sorting or researching historical info on your finds related subjects to fill in the gaps. I for one would be interested in watching those types of videos as well as the digging videos. Just a thought.

Buttons and buckles beat a blank !!! You know, when I first started following your channel, you where detecting the Roman fort. You found a couple oblong, smooth stones. I swear they were sling ammo. Did you ever follow up on that ? Thanks for another good video John. Cheers !!
Some people think buttons are boring but in my experience I've found a few really unusual ones like Clergy and livery and I think they're quite Interesting and it's always good to get a nice military button in good condition.
That button has a Coldstream Guards design in the middle there and the division of guards are the queens personal guards so I don’t know if that’s what’s depicted there but it would fit.
The grenades are designed to fracture on the grooves, as the material is significantly thinner in the fracture areas. It does not produce enough force to damage the bottom as it is thick and solid, so the bottom becomes a piece of solid schrapnel.

Hi John, The grenade Base Plug is from a British No36m Mk1 grenade. the standard fragmentation grenade used from 1915 all the way up to 1970. WDC is the manufacturer which I think is Walsall Die Casting and the big Z indicates its cast from zinc. 40 is the date of manufacture. The 36M grenade was commonly known as the Mills Bomb, after its inventor Sir William Mills. You nearly always find them intact but distorted from the explosion.

Ok, I've figured out why I love your videos. Sure the stuff is amazing, and your backstory history is amazing and all, but honestly, how many times does one need to hear about George VI or Dirty Bertie? No, these aren't the reasons why I love your videos. It's your voice and mannerisms. You are the single most soothing person I know. And I say that as a totally straight male. Your videos are like background music when I'm doing work or something similar.
I agree, it’s the “ welcome to the fields of Perthshire” for me. As an Aussie we have a pretty harsh sounding accent. It’s no where near as soothing. We sound like a murder of crows 😅
If you can't detect in the fields owing to planting, etc., why not try the brushy areas like the area behind you at the end. Seems like people would spend a lot of time there to get out of the wind or sun while having their lunch etc, or just hiding in ambush waiting for a enemy army or what have you. I know it's more difficult, but if you can't explore the fields, its a rarely detected area.
Y’all are so lucky! It would be fascinating to find something that old here where I live. I know when I was younger I found a cannonball from about 1836 or maybe 1848. That was a cool find. When I lived in New England we lived in an old house and there was a “Trash Heap” that was from about 1812. We would dig through it and find bottles, marbles and shards of pottery. That was fun for us. All of our finds went to the Historical Society. Any and all finds were taken by them. I don’t know if that law still stands there or not. I do love the buttons.
Morning John, I'm not sure if this is your sole income but if it is its likely to dry up somewhat with the farming season. You've suggested producing fewer videos but why not take the opportunity to make the SCOTTISH DETECTORIST ROAD TRIP. Get yourself a cheap campervan and with the help of co-driver Simon I'm sure there are enough of the subscribers with decent pasture / fallow permissions throughout the UK that would welcome the opportunity to have you and your camera to continue to make these precious videos. I'm sure some of the venues would provide a stop over with the equipment to produce the videos. I for one would welcome you if only my permissions were worthy of a video and I'm sure I'm not alone. It would be hard work and difficult if you have family ties but it would be very interesting for you and maybe the next step toward a promising TH-cam career.
We have thousands of years of human activity here in the US too, but sadly no metal working before the European arrival. Lucky to find something from the 18th century.

Maybe I should have clarified that on the East Coast (original 13 colonies) there wasn't metal working before European arrival. The copper culture from the upper Midwest didn't actually process metal. They broke off pieces of copper in the rocks and worked it into tools. Very similar to working flint, quartz or jasper into projectile points.
The stamp on the spoon handle is a fake hallmark used to dupe people into believing it was silver. More often than not it was EPNS. (Electro plate nickle silver)
I love a good sunny day in Scotland, with a wee bit of overcast. I like these trips when you find old buttons. That clasp that Matin found looks like it may have been from an old set of braces.
Another good video - thank you John. When you cleaned up your RCA button, did it only have two crossed arrows or was there a third arrow lying top to bottom (fletching uppermost)? The third arrow was added in 1720. Kind regards, Allison
Very nice - the P&S Firmin 153 Strand (that is the address) was the mark used in 1837. They still make the buttons and uniroms for the royal guards and military uniforms.
That micky mouse item looks like an eye from a set of hook and eyes for a monster garment or house blanket. Ladies use them on under garments only much smaller, like 3 to 5mm or 1/4"

I watch your videos probably watched most of them, i have an old crap detector but dont really have a clue where to go, what kit i could use and how i should use it, if i wanted to do some searching as an occasional hobby what do i do? I trust your experience here cleary you know what you are doing!
I don't imagine there would be a lot of Queens guard buttons to be found, Excellent find! As was the next one! I think the base of the grenade being solid would be to force the explosive compression into the fragmented shrapnel, or pineapple'd part of it. That's my guess! Cheers Mate!

Queens body guard RCA is the queens body guard in Scotland. RCA stands for Royal Company of Archers

WDC stood for Wolverhampton Diecasting Company in the West Midlands, and the 36M (M for 'Mesopotamia') was waterproofed, whereas the 36 was not.

That's not completely true. Quite a bit of natural copper was used in Wisconsin and Michigan. And that was traded down the Mississippi River.

Great finds! I’d recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush and a spray bottle instead of that wire brush. Wire would ruin a soft metal silver or gold coin.
