Galaxy S7 edge Vs Nexus 6P: Is Stock Android Truly Better? | Pocketnow

  • When choosing your next smartphone, some argue that pure Android is the way to go. The question is if following an ideal is really better than everything else?
    By now, most of the world already knows about Samsung’s new Galaxy. The company does a tremendous job at marketing its flagships, and our reviews prove that this year, marketing isn’t the only good thing about this phone. By contrast Google is at the opposite end of the Marketing food chain, but at least among geeks, the cult following behind a pure Android experience is strong. Today we decided to test what it was like to live on either side of the spectrum, and we chose the cream of the crop in each respective lineup.

    1. Buy a Galaxy S7 Edge
    2. Install Package Disabler Pro (after buying an 800 dollar phone you can afford spending another 2 dollars)
    3. Disable the useless bloatware with one tap and scroll through the disabled list to enable the few things you'd use.
    4. Install Google Now Launcher or Nova Launcher
    5. Enjoy the best of both worlds.
    Useful additions of Touchwiz, without the million background processes and additional wakelocks. Battery life is out of this world (huge increase in deep-sleep time), speed is greatly increased over the Nexus 6P (atleast with the Exynos version) and you get the exact set-up you want yourself.
    When stock Android will get triple home-button tap for one-handed mode, a shit ton of camera options (pro mode, sports mode, slow-mo etc.), a health app with step-tracing and a heart-rate sensor and split screen mode for simultaneously using youtube and whatsapp, then I'll consider moving back to Nexus. For now, (can't believe I'm saying this) Touchwiz ftw!
    Aside from that, Samsung's apps are really sweet. The calendar shows way more info on the month mode and the gallery allows moving of photo's from folder to folder like a device manager. With the material design theme they even look good.
    For anyone interested in what my Galaxy S7 Edge's UI looks like (Material design theme + Samsung's Good Lock app + Nova launcher with an icon pack), check out the screens here drive.google.com/open?id=0B4catb47CZ9seVVsamNnb2ZXWkU
    Kind regards,
    A former stock android and Cyanogenmod user

      It's cheaper in the US, but as expensive if not more expensive outside of it. In Asia the 6p costs the same as the S7 edge. So what you say is not necessarily true for everyone in the world. In my case the 6p is close to $800 dollars!

      Samsung's touch wiz android has way more features than nougat and runs better and more efficiently. It's literally android marshmallow+. And when Samsung releases its version of nougat it'll have way more features than android O. I don't get why would would want a less developed OS with a lot features and optimizations just because it's a higher letter in the alphabet.

    Samsung makes great phones, but I can't stand the shit out of touchwiz. I was really surprised when the guy said Nexus slows to a crawl. I personally think touchwiz is way more demanding than Stock Android. And come on of course the S7 has the edge cause it's a newer phone. But just imagine the S7 running stock android, it would be way more smoother and less lag. Of course not everyone would agree with my statement, but it makes sense on an extent.

    • @taz874
      @taz874 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well touchwiz has improved alot. believe me i mean i used to hate touchwiz with it being super laggy etc but since the s6 it has gotten incredibly better and my s7 has been rather smooth surprisingly. but i am surprised to see that he said the nexus 6p became slow. then again it could of just been a software issue since the nexus does get updates first so bound to get the odd software update that isnt that great i guess. getting software updates first does mean your likely to experience a few bugs

    What people get scared away from, is the fact all the reviews state the phone "slows to a crawl". If you consider an extra half second slowing to a crawl, then please. Go rethink that statement. Try having your daily driver a Moto G2 for two years. THAT, is slowing to a crawl. The truth is, both of these phones will never reach the limits of any phone that slows to a crawl, and they will both always be lighting fast.

      Parodyst1 also notice that screen size is not phone size. The LG G3 is also 5.5 but has incredibly small bezels which makes it feel like a 5.0 inch screen, but no. The iPhone 6(s) PLUS has such large bezels it could have been 6.0 inches (like there Nexus 6) instead of 5.5.

  • @pidge8964

    Ok I normally don't post comments on tech vids but I had to say this. I've been using the s7 edge for roughly 4 months now and I've seen a drastic drop in its ability to perform with speed. It's constantly laggy, struggles to open tasks and the keyboard is always slow. The Samsung launcher [not sure whats its called sry] is extremely slow which caused me to switch to the regular Android launcher. Much faster and simpler with cleaner animations. So I don't agree when he says that the Samsung launcher is better, because right out of the box, sure it may be fast....but give it time and its almost unusable.

    @CarsFX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The S7 pretty much better in every aspect, the only reason to choose 6P is for stock android, and even that is not that relevant since TW is faster than stock on the 6P (exynos)

    • @CarsFX
      @CarsFX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Emad Ahmed Even when the next nexus is released, it isnt going to be faster since the 820 is not that good of a chip, it has heating issues and throttles (not as bad as the 810, but still there), the 6p indeed lags, reddit has many threads talking about this, its smooth for the first 15mins of browsing, after that it just starts skipping frames. For the updates, nothing that android N is going to offer that doesn't already exist on TW, TW is not very bloated, most of the apps pre installed are shortcuts to the play store for full download, I disabled all of em on mine, and their collective size is less than 5mb, aside from the fact that TW only takes 7.27GB of the memory with all of its features, stock android is pretty much useless and it consumes 7GB too. that bloat argument is old buddy. Sammy made the phone of the year and when the nexus comes out, the Note6 will come out swinging leaving it behind, Again!

    • @JattAnmoli
      @JattAnmoli 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FalconFX Exynos throttles far more than the 820 after gaming. 820 also comes paired with adreno gpu which is miles ahead of samsungs own. exynos has longer battery life. my 820 doesn't heat up.

    • @CarsFX
      @CarsFX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anmol S The 820 is far worst than the exynos, google some tests, it can't sustain either its CPU or GPU for long before throttling, Exynos on the other hand, takes longer to reach the same temps. and even with that way too powerful gpu, the exynos can play pretty much the same games at the same level of performance, and even if there were games to take advantage of that difference it will be unusable, since i throttles down from its peak clock in under a minute of full load

    I don't necessarely agree, I had the 7Edge and I sold it for the 6p.
    1 - Fingerprint scanner waaaaay better on 6p
    2 - Stock Android is faster. Scroll down in google keep on both devices you'll see
    3 - Ok Google doesn't work when the 7e is locked... You have to unlock it to use google voice... useless.
    4 - Nice screen but I feel like the immersion is better on a flat screen.
    5 - Terrible night camera shots and selfies are not realistic at all.
    Perhaps I liked the wireless charging, water resistance and video recording is way better compared to the 6p.

    Relative to price: the Nexus beats the S7. I believe these two phones are at the top of their own markets with the Nexus taking some (although maybe very small) of Samsung's high end market. A better comparison would be with this year's Nexus.

    I've never experienced lag on my 6p? I have the s7 edge and had a lot more hiccups than on my Nexus so I switched back and gave the s7 to my gf. the point of getting a nexus is to root and unlock it allowing it to be used at its full potential. I dont think any phone out rn besides the iPhone compare to the fluidity of the nexus

    This review misses two key points, one being that the 6p is not as new as the galaxy, though that's loosely covered, but more importantly the vast difference in user interface between Google and Samsung. While Samsung my have improved their UI in recent years, it's undeniable that Google simply does it far better, which is a strong reason to go Nexus. If you don't take this into account you may as well get an iPhone, because Samsung's user interface is pretty bad.

      +DarklightRebel " google simply does it far better" which is the better part? the UI lags? or the boring icons? Try the galaxy, even if you put a healthy theme on, with a live wallpaper, and 10 apps running in background, it is as fast as without them.. don't forget that it is samsung that made android popular, and it is samsung which makes up for the most sales of android phones, and there's reason behind it. go figure.

    • @tjeulink
      @tjeulink 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bijan Alpha Faster software update and more developer support, which means more customization options. That's one of the buying factor when I pick an Android phone.

    I actually like the Touchwiz look, except for some app icons and their colours. Touchwiz on Marshmallow's notification bar is very simple, I think someone new to Amdroid entirely can learn to use it very fast compared to the Stock notification bar. The round folders on stock seems too dull for me after awhile. The Touchwiz UI also uses more words instead of icons in apps to navigate their users to their functionality. The notification bubbles are also nice to have. I think I would be too bored with stock

    I hate the custom UIs. I wish there was an option to just get stock Android on any Device.

    One of the reasons I like Samsung is how they fit a big screen into a relatively small body. I held the s6 edge+ today and it felt very easy to manage

    Where is this lag on the 6P? I've had the phone for about 7 months now and I haven't experienced any lag.

    I like The New TouchWiz more than stock. The theme store can change everything about the phone, plus it's had handy features like Split screen and voice command camera controls for years.

      +The Stegman there's an inverted touchwiz theme, I've been digging it on the s7 Edge, dunno why, I was trying to make it more vanilla, but it just looks boss. Totally agree with what you're saying.

      Same here I was playing with the GS7E the other day and I have to say I'm kinda falling in love with touch wiz. I like the NEXUS 6p but over time your gonna get bored with stock Android and the interface that's just my point of view correct me if I'm wrong.

    I have used stock Android, but I like OEM skins because they add more functionality and features that eventually become a part of Android as a whole.

    This is interesting. When i used my Note Edge, it turned very sluggish within a short amount of use and would have to factory reset often.
