    It was amazing, in the scariest of ways. In all my years in eastern Ky, I had never seen a rain like this before. It was the hardest, heavy rain and it just went on and on. Before I knew it, in not time, the water had made it into the yard and began to pile up. It was scary, the power was out, the rain got heavier and all I could do was pray. Keep all these places and people in your prayers. Last report, 26 deaths, many were still missing.

    • @EarlAndJill

      Hey Papaw. I can only imagine how scary. When I was in school, we lived in Knox co. High up on a hill. But the flood came and we were waterbound for 14 days. People who've never been in a flood can't realize the worry. I hope you are well. Take care.

      Went through a a crazy rain and hail storm in an rv in Laramie WY the other night at 4 am. It was only maybe 2 inches but all day I was freaked out. To live in a river valley and go through what you folks did is on a level people can't understand. Reminds me of the Johnstown flood.

    I feel so deeply for these folks. We had an awful flood when I was 12 years old. We were blessed. Daddy built on high ground, but it still came within 5 feet of our house. So scary. I remember it so clearly 45 years later. It blew out a sink hole close to the house that could have swallowed a car. Water was boiling out of it. When that happened, we went to higher ground to stay with my grandfather. Water backed all through the caves and blew out a hole on top of a 3000ft ridge (water pouring out like a waterfall). If I weren't so handicapped, I'd be there helping them.

    There's many negative comments about people living in "obvious" flood plains. That's not accurate. A long time ago when towns and cities were first settled in America, there was no running water or indoor plumbing. America did not have indoor plumbing in homes until the late 1800's, and the vast majority of that was in cities, NOT rural areas. You built right on top of the closest water source for your day-to-day survival. Water is heavy and was hard to move before plumbing and electricity came into existence, and then only if you had the money. There were NO records readily available to study past flood trends to know where NOT to build. You would just find water and start building your shelter there, and they eventually turned into towns as the trails turned into roads. That's world-wide, since the beginning of time. I never see anybody mention this historical fact, they just judge.

    • @EarlAndJill
      @EarlAndJill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey Lynx - Many of the people here had ancestors who recieved "Land Grants" for fighting in the Revolutionary War. You're right. Their children inherited the land ... The only flat land for farming - was by the rivers and creeks. Even now - the cost for some people to build a drive way even a 100 feet or so up the mountain side is prohibitive - and then the cost to maintain. And some of these houses I saw - appeared to be old mining camp houses ... maybe 100 years old or so. These people are doing the best they can with a dollar and a deed. :(

      @LYNX-R-US I wish what you said here could be repeated in every video on the flooding. I have been looking through them and in so many comments thoughtless people are saying why didn’t they just swim out? They don’t have any idea what a flood is really like. They also don’t have any idea that most of the homes are rental homes, and the people are not rich, they are poor. I just have to hope that the people out there who are good people are already on the way to Kentucky to help.

      Hi Kitty, I was born and raised in So Cal and lived the last 45 years in San Diego. CoViD permanently killed my steady and reliable music job and so after sitting on my butt for a year waiting for work to return, I gave up, retired from the music biz and left CA for South Eastern KY in early 2021. Where I am didn't get hit, but only a few miles away there was devastation. When I first got here it was just after the most severe ice storm in decades. There was flooding in the same areas as this year, so these folks near me were hit two years in a row! The news doesn't bother telling much about how people in this county were affected.
      I moved here because there is no way I would be able to live decently anywhere in CA on my retirement. I would have been relegated to renting one room in someone else's house, where here I have a huge and beautiful home on 14 acres of lawn and lush forest. I also chose a state where water won't be a problem for a very long time. I could see the writing on the wall telling me the entire west is going to run out of water. It won't be long before you will have to have a stock of water for the days they shut the taps off.... or move away.
      California is losing population by the droves, but many of them are moving to dry-as-a-bone states like Nevada and Arizona! NOT smart!

    This was a very hard video to watch but very compassionate. You said lots of good things for ones to think of. Sadly I've come across youtube vlogers going to the area video everything with no compassion, not helping others. One couple talked to a man stuck on his porch with flood waters surrounding him and never offered to call authorities or help him. The one time I wish I could reach in this screen. I have no idea where he is. I pray that couple gets run off. My family is from Linefork and we had to move after Obumer shut down coal. I can't wait to get back home and help. This is going to take a long time. Newness will wear off and news will be onto other stories and they will still be there trying to put back. Please everyone don't forget these families.

    That bus wedged unto the side of that garage is nuts. You are correct the power of water can cause much destruction. Then once the water recedes everything it consumed is ruined. Between all the floods across the US lately, and the demand for used automobiles at the moment. Consumers need be very cautious buying a vehicle in coming months. That applies to every part of the country.

      Totally agree - there will be a lot of water logged cars sold in the next few months. Supposed to be marked salvage on the title - at least in Kentucky, but people are unscrupulous. Buyer beware. :(

      Kate - unless you've been poor - and lived here, it is difficult to understand the challenges. The flood impacts people in many ways - can't get to work, can't get work, bills get behind, ... It impacts more than the people who actual get flooded. Not to diminish anybody's misfortune. Just - you can't imagine the impact - unless you live it.

      @@EarlAndJill We lucked out and only had the culvert wash out. We can jump the gap, but sure can't drive it. Have to wait for the county to repair it. But family friends (daughter, mom, grandma) all three generations lost their homes.
      This is the second major flood we've experienced. The previous one a few years back, did just as much damage. Wiped out the entire mobile home village.

    My mom always said --"Red skies at night, Sailors delight, Red skies in the morning, Sailors take warning!!!" Relates to what the commentator said at the beginning!! I have seen the pain and disaster that floods can bring. it is horrible and heartbreaking!!! Nature can change in an instant. This man does an excellent showing and commentating on the situation. So much flooding around the world and the same with fires. Very painful!!!

    • @EarlAndJill
      @EarlAndJill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Betsy, good morning. A couple of folks have tried to ding me on my comment about red skies. The earliest known writing comes from the Bible, a 1395 (?) edition. "The eeuenynge maad, ye seien, It shal be cleer, for the heuene is lijk to reed; and the morwe, To day tempest, for heuen shyneth heuy, or sorwful." The passage in the bible referred to Shepherds, who certainly had an interest in the weather. The "Red sky at Night, Sailors Delight, Red Sky at Morning, Sailors Take Warning" is what I grew up with and what most people are familiar with. I don't care that someone wants to disagree, If I'm wrong - show me. The sad thing, is nature is an awesome force to reckon with, and can change your whole life in an instant. Tornado, Fire, Flood. Lives lost. And you have to consider the property loss, after all - that's how a people provide security for their family, their children's safety and future. You take that a way, and a man or woman can feel devastated and vulnerable. THat's a terrible feeling. I hope your day is good Betsy, take care.

    People don't realize how much rain we get in Kentucky. We've always had floods that would block the roads. I'm 70 years old. I remember the flood of April 1977. We'd had unusual snow that winter and the ground froze. I remember my dad saying if snow was laying on Black Mountain like it was here in Bell County that We'd have worse floods than other. Black Mountain is the highest point in Kentucky. My daddy never lived to see it, he died in March of 1977. In April the spring rains started. The Cumberland River begins in Harlan County, comes on through Bell County where I live. We lived up on a hillside. I couldn't believe what the radio was saying, that the water was going to go over the flood wall in Pineville. We lost power right after he said that. It had been raining for several days. That night it rained the hardest than I've ever heard. The next day it was unreal. The only communication we had was a CB radio. We couldn't get out of our holler. We were used to the river backing water up our creek but I could see water above the church windows. I'd never seen that. On the CB radio we could hear how they'd got the people out of Pineville and onto higher ground, some up on the cemetery, some up above the rail road tracks. Water flooded places on Highway 92 that it'd never been before. I'm not trying to take anything away from those victims of this flood. I'm just saying this brought back memories. I consider myself lucky that I never have lived where the water can get to me. As I'm writing this we are under flood warning here in Bell County. It's rained all day. My condolences go out to all the families that have been impacted by the flood. Especially those people that have lost loved ones.

    • @EarlAndJill
      @EarlAndJill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maxine, good morning. I remember that flood - and you're right. We were waterbound for 14 days ... much of it without power. No generator. It was a rough time but fortunate for us the house was built on the top of the mountain. I remember the water breaking over the flood wall in Pineville. Somehow Barbourville was spared. I know yellow creek there - used to be a tannery there. Noe town usually floods easy. I hope you are safe. Take care..

      @@EarlAndJill..I'm up on the hillside. I'm 70 years old. I've always lived on hillsides. I don't understand how Middleboro gets flooding so much. Their's seem to go down. I was born and raised on Greasy Creek, on 92, I raised my kids there. We of course didn't get home flooded, but got locked in. I would never live in low lying areas. For anyone that is caused by Climate Change. I read Dr Thomas Walker's journal. He's the one that actually found the Cumberland Gap in the 1700's. He didn't go as far as he wanted to because of the heavy rain and flooded creeks.
