Local floods are not caused by climate change. There have been floods like this in that region for centuries (and probably longer). You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to bring politics into a tragedy like this.

You can't argue that the number of extreme weather events has not been increasing in the past few decades relative to previous decades. Fires have hit states this year that had no idea how to deal with them. Texas' shitty power grid cut power to millions of people in the winder because ERCOT was too stubborn to listen to past warnings. Climate change in it of itself is not even a political issue, it's literally something we're causing that effects every person regardless of affiliation - but thats a whole different conversation. So dumb that every issue people disagree with turns into a "political issue". It's only "political" because our politicians are the only one in a position to do anything about it.

IF god were truly omnipotent, then evil wouldn't exist; goodness would prevail. IF god were all powerful, floods would NOT kill people (especially children) for evil would have NO power. This is heartbreaking and my heart goes out to all these people. To the mother who lost her home and survived with her kids, sometimes mobile home insurance covers flooding. Please check with your company to see if this was covered (it sometimes is covered regardless of a separate flood policy). God Bless you all!

One, with the use of Fossil fuels releasing co2 "green house gas", the atmphere was never designed to handle 7.8 billion humans. We have deforested half the planet. humans have exploted the oceans and ocean species are shrinking fast. In 1860, co2 emissions were .006 billion tons a year. Today they are 36 billion tons a year. Scientist have since the 1950s warned the us goverment to cut back on co2 and well they did not listen. I was born in the 1960s when portland winters would drop to 0F and now, it never gets to freezing. Ka, the cities in America are designed WRONG in many cases to minimize co2. Urban sprawl with single use land zoning is terrible as it only support the use of cars to drive miles for necessities. not the case in Europe.

There's many negative comments about people living in "obvious" flood plains. Well, a long time ago when towns and cities were first settled in America, there was no running water or indoor plumbing. America did not have indoor plumbing in homes until the late 1800's, and the vast majority of that was in cities, NOT rural areas. You built right on top of the closest water source for your day-to-day survival. Water is heavy and was hard to move before plumbing and electricity came into existence, and then only if you had the money. There were NO records readily available to study past flood trends to know where NOT to build. You would just find water and start building your shelter there, and they eventually turned into towns as the trails turned into roads. That's world-wide, since the beginning of time. I never see anybody mention this historical fact, they just judge.

So very sad. I hope something changes with the building permit process there. Almost every wrecked house I have seen has been built in a floodplain. People deserve to be safe.
All of these towns were settled back BEFORE there was water and elctricity. You always had to build right on top of the nearest water source just to survive. Since the beginning of time, world-wide.
It's not a flood plain.. I live here. I got flooded few years ago and we don't live anywhere near a creek or river. It was flash flooding caused from run off from the hills. And this flood, some places got 12 inches of rain in a short period. The ground was already saturated. That kind of rain will flood anywhere.

I have survived wildfires, tornados and flash floods. You are a smart and brave mother. You did what you could with what you had. Amazing mom. When I was a kid we had a tornado blow over. Mom was just throwing us down the basement steps. She told us to slid down. The wind caught the door and knocked her out and down the steps. Like this woman, she kept it together. Kept it cool. One of the side effects of such catastrophic events is that many businesses also lose sites & must close. And displaced people can't get to work the next day or even next week if their workplace did not have to shut down. There is no way to rebuild a respectful, safe, happy life without employment. Then you are just getting by hand to mouth. People need to be able to work to get financially stable again and do right by their children. The Gov't needs to help this area, since as she said, they were not stupids who built in a flood plane & could expect such life losses.

Hard to believe this happened in America. We've seen tragic floods like this in 3rd world countries with little infrastructure and no early warning systems. What happened here and why was no one aware of this tragedy before it hit? Was weather forecast wrong, were early warnings not heeded, so many questions.

Why is it hard to believe? This has happened so many times and it will continue to happen even more in the future. Hurricane Katrina was the worst example. Experts were warning about it decades before and yet no one did anything. Then when it happened, it was the worst recovery. They still haven't recovered.

My heart goes out to you all. Please remember we CAN all do our part to stop the excess climate change if we all do our part to lower our carbon footprint. You can also call your senators and congressman and congresswoman and ask them to do more. You can sign petitions and more importantly, VOTE! Vote for people who care about how our climate (not the seasonal weather) is changing and not for the better. Our ocean is acidifying, the storms are coming stronger and longer lasting and coming sooner then they used to- the season lasts longer with worse storms and it's just terrible. The whole globe is changing and it's going to be a catastrophe if we dont start acting upon our caring.

There's many negative comments about people living in "obvious" flood plains. Well, a long time ago when towns and cities were first settled in America, there was no running water or indoor plumbing. America did not have indoor plumbing in homes until the late 1800's, and the vast majority of that was in cities, NOT rural areas. You built right on top of the closest water source for your day-to-day survival. Water is heavy and was hard to move before plumbing and electricity came into existence, and then only if you had the money. There were NO records readily available to study past flood trends to know where NOT to build. You would just find water and start building your shelter there, and they eventually turned into towns as the trails turned into roads. That's world-wide, since the beginning of time. I never see anybody mention this historical fact, they just judge.

It's not a flood plain.. I live here. I got flooded few years ago and we don't live anywhere near a creek or river. It was flash flooding caused from run off from the hills. And this flood, some places got 12 inches of rain in a short period. The ground was already saturated. That kind of rain will flood anywhere.

I have survived wildfires, tornados and flash floods. You are a smart and brave mother. You did what you could with what you had. Amazing mom. When I was a kid we had a tornado blow over. Mom was just throwing us down the basement steps. She told us to slid down. The wind caught the door and knocked her out and down the steps. Like this woman, she kept it together. Kept it cool. We were lucky. Our house was not touched but some leaves down. Our neighbors..... not so lucky. Good luck ma'am.

What a heartbreaking and tragic situation! Please, please take climate change seriously, otherwise we will be suffering increased events like this.
One of the side effects of such catastrophic events is that many businesses also lose sites & must close. And displaced people can't get to work the next day or even next week if their workplace did not have to shut down. There is no way to rebuild a respectful, safe, happy life without employment. Then you are just getting by hand to mouth. People need to be able to work to get financially stable again and do right by their children. The Gov't needs to help this area, since as she said, they were not stupids who built in a flood plane & could expect such life losses.

i feel terrible for her and i don't mean this in spite but... why would fema come in and help them in kentucky in that capacity of bailing out the uninsured? they voted against that kind of "commy socialist tax payer funded stuff" so if what they voted for went through.. it isn't available to help them anymore. When natural disasters are more common, suddenly people see a need for government assistance where they once saw none.

Poor Kentucky. First the tornado that wiped out towns in western Kentucky where my great grandparents were from now the poor folks of Appalachia. They have so little especially after their and W.Va.'s energy industry has been destroyed.

Hard to believe this happened in America. We've seen tragic floods like this in 3rd world countries with little infrastructure and no early warning systems. What happened here and why was no one aware of this tragedy before it hit? Was weather forecast wrong, were early warnings not heeded, so many questions.

For most the population the US IS a third world country. Billionaires pay no tax while the poor lose everything.
Why is it hard to believe? This has happened so many times and it will continue to happen even more in the future. Hurricane Katrina was the worst example. Experts were warning about it decades before and yet no one did anything. Then when it happened, it was the worst recovery. They still haven't recovered.

Certainly, SOME of the missing must have hunkered down in a safe place for the time being...I pray that we start discovering survivors. I can't imagine having my child swept from my own arms. So painfully tragic. A vacuum cleaner cord; it worked, they survived. You have to use what you have to keep yourself alive. Creative. Blessed Be!! Staying alive is the prime directive. I hope you are able to relay those stories to your grandchildren.

My heart goes out to you all. Please remember we CAN all do our part to stop the excess climate change if we all do our part to lower our carbon footprint. You can also call your senators and congressman and congresswoman and ask them to do more. You can sign petitions and more importantly, VOTE! Vote for people who care about how our climate (not the seasonal weather) is changing and not for the better. Our ocean is acidifying, the storms are coming stronger and longer lasting and coming sooner then they used to- the season lasts longer with worse storms and it's just terrible. The whole globe is changing and it's going to be a catastrophe if we dont start acting upon our caring.

We need to stop climate change & start reversing some of the damage we’ve done to the planet. These devastating natural disasters are becoming more frequent & more damaging each time. What’s going to happen when insurance companies are unable to pay out to help people? When we won’t be able to afford insurance? Dimwits like Steel Scrap can mock all they like, but I bet if his house was washed away he’d be the first to expect help!
@pulehu. Shortribs those are also pretty expensive and just sucky in general, gas cars go longer and faster than these sucky electric ones. As well as that many of us live in rural areas where trucks are necessary, where the gas stations that are out here would never consider getting electric chargers, and you don’t save much money as it takes about 40 years for the car to pay itself off. Why go green when green is garbage.
