It is easy to understand why people there live in the long house : Because they live in the mid of the jungle. It is better to live together and help each others rather than get bored.
fun fact : 1. one community of longhouse from one blood line, meaning they are relatives 2. its a land of "headhunter" (only officially ended less than 100yrs ago) longhouse in a traditional way normally 10ft or more above the ground and having perimeter fancing / fort like as a protection from enemy (other tribes of Sarawak or Indonesia) this is the prime reason. 3. every longhouse will having land borders with another village or gov. land (meaning the forest surrounding the longhouse are belong to them) legally under the Native Land Law Act. As for me, I can stay at longhouse or any squatter as long got huge space of room with bed or hotel like facilities with (most importantly) strong internet coverage. I used to stay at longhouse-like squatter at oil palm estates and logging camps during my audit trip in the past and the experience is not bad for me.
