Surprisingly people in Sarawak speak English so well. At least when you travel in Sarawak, there is no language barrier at all.

English has been the Main language all over Malaysia.
      Including the Gov departments.
Jabatan Kerja Raya(JKR) used to be Public Works Department(PWD)
JPS was (DID)..Dept of Irrigation and Drainage
JAN was (WWD)..Water Works Dept. etc..etc..
But about 40 years ago, the Gov made Government Departments' literature in Malay language. All Private Companies, Financial Institutions and Public Facilities as well as the Court still remain English today. Our Newspapers are still English too.
Did you know that you can write to the Gov Department in English? Their official reply would be in Malay though.

It is easy to understand why people there live in the long house : Because they live in the mid of the jungle. It is better to live together and help each others rather than get bored.

      fun fact :
      1. one community of longhouse from one blood line, meaning they are relatives
      2. its a land of "headhunter" (only officially ended less than 100yrs ago) longhouse in a traditional way normally 10ft or more above the ground and having perimeter fancing / fort like as a protection from enemy (other tribes of Sarawak or Indonesia) this is the prime reason.
      3. every longhouse will having land borders with another village or gov. land (meaning the forest surrounding the longhouse are belong to them) legally under the Native Land Law Act. (Native Customary Right)
      4. the rest is pretty common with the other community or tribes from others country.

As for me, I can stay at longhouse or any squatter as long got huge space of room with bed or hotel like facilities with (most importantly) strong internet coverage. I used to stay at longhouse-like squatter at oil palm estates and logging camps during my audit trip in the past and the experience is not bad for me. PS just accept whatever given to you, treat it also as a gift from God and be grateful.

They call them longhouses, because its actually one long building on stilts, made of timber/attaps.
At least in the olden days.
Nowadays it appears they are a hopsctoch of houses attached to each other (at least the one in Annah Rais) , or one long concrete building.

I live in KL past 26 years.I am Kelabit orang Ulu from Long Napir Limbang Sarawak. We have long house not that much less than 80 houses. From Limbang Town it takes 30 minute driving to Brunei and 3 hours driving to Miri Town.My Father is from Mulu,Baram has lot of Long House to visit and to explore. My cousin brother he works at the National Gunung Mulu Cave as a Tour Guide.Uncle and cousin sister they has a Homestay at Mulu so called “Diana Mulu Homestay” very close to Mulu Airport.
Enjoy Borneo and Exploring Sarawak 🥰❤️ 🙏
~ Back in the 1960’s English is the main language above all in Sarawak, school subject/hand writing, all written in English.Back at Our village those days.We called it the golden times because The British Teacher’s trained the students so well.Later than 1970’s My times, the goverment system has been changed to Bahasa Subject. That’s what My Family recalled their memories back then. Many Thanks to late “Bruno Manser” Swiss activist,he has sponsored My Uncle further studies at the British Columbia in Canada
Salute Sir 🙏 Your Soul Rest In Peace 🕊
