Great video Shawn! Really enjoyed that - the teamwork reminds me of setting up camps in the Forces... a platoon of 50 people working like clockwork can do an astonishing amount in just a few minutes. The feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself while working towards a common goal is highly motivating :)

Man, I can't wait to see the finished product! I remember as a kid using the Ash bark for various things, but no longer in my area. Years back a group from a local college setup a Native American shelter in the Shawnee National Forest using traditional techniques. Unfortunately, it's long been abandoned and can't be built using the same materials due to the Emerald Ash Borer. An art to be lost forever using those materials. Hat's off Shawn! Keep it alive as long as you can!

I really give a lot of credit to @My Self Reliance for pushing me to purchase my dream property, One of the things holding me back from buying some land was I didn't have anyone to spend my weekends/weeks building it into a little piece of paradise. Your videos reminded me all I needed was an axe, my dog and myself. I just purchased a 400 acre plot of land (mixture of forest/rivers/ and 1500 feet of water front) in Thunderbay Ontario and can't wait for this summer :) I hope to bump into one of these days and say Thanks for all the great videos! Simply amazing! My boy, in 4th grade, was studying those longhouses not too long ago...to see it be build from the ground up is wonderful. Now I can show him how they were built. It's nice to see that you share a part of your land for your friends and family. Very kindfull. If someday subscribers would be welcome to visit or get to work on builds too, I would certainly be ready to take some time to drive from Quebec city to put my hands to work and share my passion for your videos. It is great to see the positive feedback from folks with varied indigenous backgrounds. I would love to know more about how the Algonquin's were able to survive in Ontario on the fringe of the Canadian shield. I was surprised to see Doug Linker was there. I love his channel especially the carving. I'm a green woodworker myself. Spoons more than anything else. If you ever decide to have a bush craft get together at your camp I'd love to join in. Great job fellas. Many feel the need to criticize work and efforts. Building something with your hands is time and labor intensive as well as rewarding.
I am an Iroquois archaeologist in AlbaNY. My field school was a 16th century longhouse. My buddy, Barry Keegan, who builds these for museums and other venues, we were talking about the shape of a longhouse. And we both laughed and said the reason they are shaped that way, is because you could bring an entire tree in there and burn it. Less chopping.

Christine Natvig, your great grandmother is probably Mohawk. You can check with the Akwesasne reservation; it has probably the most remaining Mohawks concentrated in one place. It’s in Canada. The Mohawks are the eastern most of tribe of the Iroquois nation.
Beth Suter oh my goodness, this is the closest I have come to finding my heritage. I had wondered if she was from Canada due to being right on the border.
I remember building models of a long house, both with my children, and when I was a child. (We still have my son's.) Seeing it done in full scale is amazing! It adds so much to understanding how native Americans lived. Now I'd love to be part of such a project myself!

Is it not just totally amazing the architects the Native American Indians were using only basic crafted tools and the natural abundance of building material that nature provided. I am thoroughly impressed with this build. PLEASE provide more videos like this and of course continue to keep us abreast of your additions to your cabin area (like your future Workshop)

Awesome project! I'm from two different indigenous cultures. The Tlingit Indians from Southeast Alaska and Unangan (Aleut) from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The Tlingit's built and lived in long houses and the Aleut's made semi-subterranean style homes some were found to be 200 ft in length. Did you place the door towards the East to honor Creator? The Aleut subterranean homes withstood hurricane force winds. The Aleutians are called, birthplace of the winds. I read where semi subterranean homes maintain 55 degrees anywhere in the world. We have many different tribes here in Alaska and many do culture camps to promote and perpetuate the culture. Our youth learn how to cut up seals and filet fish, mostly salmon, including they put it up by canning or drying/smoking to last through the the winter months. They get octopus, clams, bidarkies, sea urchins, gather plants and berries for eating and medicinal use. They learn many indigenous crafts such as making full size kayaks which the Aleuts are well known for. Modern kayaks were fashioned after Aleut crafts. Youth learn how to put up seal oil, make fry bread, smoke and/or dry fish, pluck ducks, gather sea gull and sea bird eggs, they put up berries and such. I taught basket weaving at a couple of camps one in the Aleutians on Popov Island (Sand Point) and one here in Anchorage. I think our youth are pretty lucky to learn what they are learning. I quit teaching this year; I taught for 37 years. Even though our summer days are long the summer is short, so I want to enjoy the outdoors more this year even putting in a garden. Alaska is a big beautiful state to explore. I'm excited to see the progress in your long house.

I was raised in the longhouse environment and lived there until I graduated from the Teacher's Training College. Now I stay in one single house in the vicinity of a small town. The memories and joy living in the longhouse keep on coming to my mind if I see the same type of a house, quite resembles a longhouse. Keep on sending videos on longhouses from any country that still keeps this practice.

Actually, a Man would Marry, Build a room, start a family, and his wife's family would move in... then the house would be extended. When a female offspring would 'marry' Her Husband would add on another 'room', and move into Her family's Long house... Clans would follow the Matrilineal blood line, so "Her Clan" would be the dominant Clan in the "House". "Haudenosaune" means, we who build Longhouses. It is the Name Of The Iroquois People, of The First Nations of All NY, Southern Ontario, and Southern Quebec. Great Vid, And I Love your Enthusiasm to show ancient bushcraft. but they sometimes used thin bendable 6" saplings to make the walls, and the start of the roof 'form'. Also, there was always a space for smoke exhaust, as a square opening in the center of the roof. One or two openings for a room... Bravo Gentlemen.

So much outrage about "cultural appropriation" by liberal whites, but the Natives of most countries don't mind at all, as long as it is done respectfully and with a true desire to learn about that culture.

This is such a fantastic and educational video. I grew up in northern Minnesota and have seen buildings like this growing up but never seen one built. To bad the young could not receive this kind of building.
A beautiful long house and a project that unites friends and experience those things that the Native peoples did so well. I'm sitting by my Canadian stove and under my moose skull which came from my friends on Golden Lake Reserve in your country. I bought my stove from my friends and brought it back to Pa. years back. You've done something I always wanted to do here on my 8 acres of woods where I live in Lancaster Co. Pa. The long house was the common home in this area and I believe often they were over 150 feet long in villages. A number of Native nations lived here as the Susquehannoux, The Conestogas, The Shenks Ferry Natives, Shanee and others. I live about 10 miles from the Susquehanna River where it is believed to contain the biggest concentration of petroglyphs on the east coast. They can trace life back along the river over 14,000 years. I must comment on your respect and spiritual connection to the land. It shows very well along with your great music and video. I appreciate so much your sharing and knowledge of these things you've learned and experienced. I could feel the reverence you felt when you held things on your hands like the tool that Dick used and the cabin he built. That is certainly on my bucket list but I'd be doing a day trip, perhaps one day. I graduated from high school the year he built the cabin. We shall see because there is always plenty to do here at my home in the woods. Thanks so much to you and your good friends! Great teamwork, great craftsmanship and the food made me hungry. As a tradesman, one skill I can’t encourage enough is the use of both arms when tasked with sawing , hammering , lifting, and so on. You really extend your productive pace doing this. Balance is the key my friends.

Man, I can't wait to see the finished product! I remember as a kid using the Ash bark for various things, but no longer in my area. Years back a group from a local college setup a Native American shelter in the Shawnee National Forest using traditional techniques. Unfortunately, it's long been abandoned and can't be built using the same materials due to the Emerald Ash Borer. An art to be lost forever using those materials. Hat's off Shawn! Keep it alive as long as you can!

I really give a lot of credit to @My Self Reliance for pushing me to purchase my dream property, One of the things holding me back from buying some land was I didn't have anyone to spend my weekends/weeks building it into a little piece of paradise. Your videos reminded me all I needed was an axe, my dog and myself. I just purchased a 400 acre plot of land (mixture of forest/rivers/ and 1500 feet of water front) in Thunderbay Ontario and can't wait for this summer :)

Simply amazing! My boy, in 4th grade, was studying those longhouses not too long ago...to see it be build from the ground up is wonderful. Now I can show him how they were built. It's nice to see that you share a part of your land for your friends and family. Very kindfull. If someday subscribers would be welcome to visit or get to work on builds too, I would certainly be ready to take some time to drive from Quebec city to put my hands to work and share my passion for your videos. Great job fellas. Many feel the need to criticize work and efforts. Building something with your hands is time and labor intensive as well as rewarding.
I am an Iroquois archaeologist in AlbaNY. My field school was a 16th century longhouse. My buddy, Barry Keegan, who builds these for museums and other venues, we were talking about the shape of a longhouse. And we both laughed and said the reason they are shaped that way, is because you could bring an entire tree in there and burn it. Less chopping.

Christine Natvig, your great grandmother is probably Mohawk. You can check with the Akwesasne reservation; it has probably the most remaining Mohawks concentrated in one place. It’s in Canada. The Mohawks are the eastern most of tribe of the Iroquois nation.

I remember building models of a long house, both with my children, and when I was a child. (We still have my son's.) Seeing it done in full scale is amazing! It adds so much to understanding how native Americans lived. Now I'd love to be part of such a project myself!

Is it not just totally amazing the architects the Native American Indians were using only basic crafted tools and the natural abundance of building material that nature provided. I am thoroughly impressed with this build. PLEASE provide more videos like this and of course continue to keep us abreast of your additions to your cabin area (like your future Workshop)

Awesome project! I'm from two different indigenous cultures. The Tlingit Indians from Southeast Alaska and Unangan (Aleut) from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The Tlingit's built and lived in long houses and the Aleut's made semi-subterranean style homes some were found to be 200 ft in length. Did you place the door towards the East to honor Creator? The Aleut subterranean homes withstood hurricane force winds. The Aleutians are called, birthplace of the winds. I read where semi subterranean homes maintain 55 degrees anywhere in the world. We have many different tribes here in Alaska and many do culture camps to promote and perpetuate the culture. Our youth learn how to cut up seals and filet fish, mostly salmon, including they put it up by canning or drying/smoking to last through the the winter months. They get octopus, clams, bidarkies, sea urchins, gather plants and berries for eating and medicinal use. They learn many indigenous crafts such as making full size kayaks which the Aleuts are well known for. Modern kayaks were fashioned after Aleut crafts. Youth learn how to put up seal oil, make fry bread, smoke and/or dry fish, pluck ducks, gather sea gull and sea bird eggs, they put up berries and such. I taught basket weaving at a couple of camps one in the Aleutians on Popov Island (Sand Point) and one here in Anchorage. I think our youth are pretty lucky to learn what they are learning. I quit teaching this year; I taught for 37 years. Even though our summer days are long the summer is short, so I want to enjoy the outdoors more this year even putting in a garden. Alaska is a big beautiful state to explore. I'm excited to see the progress in your long house.

I was raised in the longhouse environment and lived there until I graduated from the Teacher's Training College. Now I stay in one single house in the vicinity of a small town. The memories and joy living in the longhouse keep on coming to my mind if I see the same type of a house, quite resembles a longhouse. Keep on sending videos on longhouses from any country that still keeps this practice.

Actually, a Man would Marry, Build a room, start a family, and his wife's family would move in... then the house would be extended. When a female offspring would 'marry' Her Husband would add on another 'room', and move into Her family's Long house... Clans would follow the Matrilineal blood line, so "Her Clan" would be the dominant Clan in the "House".
"Haudenosaune" means, we who build Longhouses. It is the Name Of The Iroquois People, of The First Nations of All NY, Southern Ontario, and Southern Quebec.
Great Vid, And I Love your Enthusiasm to show ancient bushcraft. but they sometimes used thin bendable 6" saplings to make the walls, and the start of the roof 'form'. Also, there was always a space for smoke exhaust, as a square opening in the center of the roof. One or two openings for a room...

This is such a fantastic and educational video. I grew up in northern Minnesota and have seen buildings like this growing up but never seen one built. To bad the young could not receive this kind of building.
A beautiful long house and a project that unites friends and experience those things that the Native peoples did so well. I'm sitting by my Canadian stove and under my moose skull which came from my friends on Golden Lake Reserve in your country. I bought my stove from my friends and brought it back to Pa. years back. You've done something I always wanted to do here on my 8 acres of woods where I live in Lancaster Co. Pa. The long house was the common home in this area and I believe often they were over 150 feet long in villages. A number of Native nations lived here as the Susquehannoux, The Conestogas, The Shenks Ferry Natives, Shanee and others. I live about 10 miles from the Susquehanna River where it is believed to contain the biggest concentration of petroglyphs on the east coast. They can trace life back along the river over 14,000 years.
I must comment on your respect and spiritual connection to the land. It shows very well along with your great music and video. I appreciate so much your sharing and knowledge of these things you've learned and experienced. I could feel the reverence you felt when you held things on your hands like the tool that Dick used and the cabin he built. That is certainly on my bucket list but I'd be doing a day trip, perhaps one day. I graduated from high school the year he built the cabin. We shall see because there is always plenty to do here at my home in the woods. Thanks so much to you and your good friends! Great teamwork, great craftsmanship and the food made me hungry. As a tradesman, one skill I can’t encourage enough is the use of both arms when tasked with sawing , hammering , lifting, and so on. You really extend your productive pace doing this. Balance is the key my friends.
