  • World no.2 Alireza Firouzja (FRA, 2656) was up against Ukraine's top junior, Kirill Shevchenko (2508) in Round 9 of World Rapid 2021. Firouzja managed to catch Shevchenko's mistake and he was cruising towards victory, until he missed his theoretical win in the rook endgame against his opponent. Eventually he figured it out.
Find out where did Kirill go wrong and when Firouzja initially missed his opportunity in the rook endgame.

The R & P vs R endgame is drawn position. K cutoff by 1 file, and P hasn't crossed 4th rank. Black needs to execute the frontal defense properly.
Shevchenko knows this standard idea, but forgot some detail. Fatal mistake was 13:50 Rh8+ (Ke5 attacking the R needs to be played). Two important things to remember 1) Keep enough checking distance from front and 2) Attack the R with K if it tries to protect the pawn.

In the Soviet Union they'd have both been sent to rook endgame school for a fortnight after that. It's surprising how hard the 'basic' rook and pawn v rook endings are; I remember Magnus losing one, harder than this, against Aronian when he was young.

Pause at 12:17, just after ali played Rf5, considering the time constraints on both of them, kirill could have jostled for a drawish possibility with Rg6 which i feel is worth the risk

Terrible play by Shevechenko in the rook and pawns ending. First he should never that let the white king get to the fourth rank. Second, he had a draw if he just keeps moving his king between h7 and g7. When he started moving his king towards the white rook I thought it was over. You have to put your ego in siberia and realize that it is you who are fighting for the draw, trying to win will lead to a loss. Later the engine showed he had draw because of a mistake Rf1 by white, but after white defended the pawn with his rook, the Rh8+ move no longer worked and was the critical mistake, he had to play Ke6 attacking the R. White after a check has nothing better to return to defending the rook and so on. Granted rook endgames are notoriously difficult, but I think that black had a known draw, as passive defense with a knight pawn by keeping his rook on the first rank is a draw. White realizing black made a mistake the last time with Rh8+, cleverly engineered the position again, but now with the rook on a4, but this allows the black king to get in front of the pawn for an easy draw. I think if they have more time this would have been played correctly.

Since it was a knight pawn black could have gotten a draw by passive defense, king in front of the pawn and rook on the back rank. This passive defense does not work with the four central files having the pawn but it was a no brainer here, when he brought his king out to attack the rook I was thinking , what are you doing you have an easy draw.
