Love that not only is it the same guy working on shin ultraman, but the fact that the same technique is used in tandem with modern cg just shows classic techniques are still not only a viable effect, but can all be done properly today
It's really nice to see this man finally getting credit for his work, He worked an absolutely brutal schedule AND didn't get credit till recently. That's like a nightmare.
I just want to say that this is the coolest fucking thing they could have done for Shin Ultraman, and I'm so happy that Shin Ultraman is doing this in the first place.
Now THIS is what I call a high quality video! The editing is spectacular, the research is Fantastic, and the writing is immaculate! Keep doing what you're doing man, you have a HUGE potential!
The optical effects animation work of Ultraman, Godzilla, and all of old school Tokusatsu to be honest, has always been a fascinating subject to me. So to have at least one English language video tackling part of the subject is a delight. Thanks for the video, Matt, and I definitely want to see more like it.
I'd love to see more deep-dives into the history of old school film techniques and the pioneers who changed how sci fi movies were made. This was a great video, loved the research and the focus on the people behind the camera, we don't see enough of that in Kaiju-related videos.
I feel the tokusatsu genre as a whole is one where you can see the most love poured. They didn´t have to make tha spacium beam the way they did, they could have go with a more modern locking effect, but instead, they gave an old classic a revamp look, they brought back the same techniques, the same person who make it and simply improve upon it by using modern cgi. They aren´t just taking a concept and building something different out of it, they took the concept of what Ultraman man is, modernized it without losing the meaning behind said character. There´s so much love put into this films by the people behind them that I can´t help but clap and shed a small happy tear at there dedication.
I have been a fan of Ultraman since the 1970's when I came home from school to watch the English dubbed version while doing homework. However this is the first time I learned about Mr. Sadao Iizuka and his contributions. His work was one of the things that made my childhood a joy, and thank you for telling this story.
Absolutely! It's about time people started talking about Ultraman more. It's a treasure trove of Toku goodies! I would love to see a video that talks city modeling or even spaceship models used by the various attack teams throughout the Ultra franchise. That might be a good start!
That was an incredible video! As a fan and admirer of the Tokusatsu art form, I was pleasantly surprised by the information shared here, and I feel more love for Ultraman-and the genre as a whole-than ever. Moreover, let’s always remember the unsung heroes that had a hand in literally shaping some of our fondest memories growing up. Excellent job, Matt! I’d love to see more.
Seems shin ultraman is huge success now, really hope the movie will be released in my country. That old + modern touch in shin ultraman trailer is godly
Such an amazing video, and I wish I knew about Sadao Iizuka earlier than this, considering his contributions to the many Tokusatsu franchises we know and love. I am extremely hyped for this movie.
This..is awesome! I remember the first time I saw the Spacium Beam..it was back in the 90's and I had rented an Ultraman video game for the SNES, Ultraman: Towards the Future. I had never seen Ultraman before, though I was VERY familiar with ToHo's Godzilla thanks to my father, when I would go stay with him for a weekend we would often rent videos and my dad is the one who introduced me to Kaiju films with the very first Godzilla, been a fan ever since. The VERY first show of 'Ultraman" I ever saw was the US version of "Gridman" "Superhuman Samurai Saiber Squad", it's only recently that I've started seeing Ultraman DVDs start popping up in places like my local Walmart to buy.
Thought you were gonna mention the religious influence behind the pose, but analyzing the man behind the effect is great because I had no idea of him. Continue the Ultra stuff!!!
A friend of mine introduced me to Ultraman a few years ago, and I'm a big fan now. The Specium Ray is one of the most iconic moves of Ultraman this Specium beam of Shin Ultraman can even Rival Shin Godzilla's Automic beam. I'm still Curious about Shin Ultraman doesn't have a color timer on his chest but I still love the original design so I don't mind, LETS GO SHIN ULTRAMAN!! I want to see the giant of light on the big screen again
Very Awesome upload, so please continue with more videos, about the Ultraman Series!!! It is entertaining and educational for all of the young and old dedicated Ultraman Fans!!! Especially, in regards to the Tsuburaya Staff responsibilities, as a crew and artistic design department!!! Awesome!!!
Incredibly informative and very moving. I really enjoyed this a lot :) Would love to see you touch on the monsters that will be in the film and their origins and updated looks :)

TH-cam just suggested your channel and not a minute on this video, you have a new sub on me. Really love the details and the spacium beam is something I've never thought to ask who created it. Really greay video. Hope you could do more videos on Ultraman and his brothers. 👍
I hope you make also henshin related effect in ultraman, I really like that effect of him transforming with red flash background at the back, that scene really is nostalgic thing for me back in the days.
As my name would suggest, I may be a little biased but I think Shin Ultraman will skyrocket interest in Toku fans and I think that there will be A LOT more people craving information on the Hero of Light. Think of the Power Rangers in recent times. When trailers for the 2017 movie came out, a lot of older fans came out of the woodwork because Power Rangers was back in the public mind.
Yes I do and also I want to know what that one called you that looks like shin Godzilla with a bench tail and a horn stuck up on his head on top of his head
Hey, Matt. Thanks for another deep-dive into Ultra lore! Today the movie (or was it yesterday?) opens in Japan. I wonder how long it'll take to premier Statside, or even worldwide?

i love to see more of a fan theory on your part of what if Ultraman was in the Monsterverse
No way. We don't need a big obnoxious dumb Hollywood Ultraman. Leave it to Japan.
Mister Iizuka is a treasure, period.
This man deserves a lot more credit people should know his name
Thank you for this video Matt. Absolutely fantastic. I've always been fascinated by the optical effects from this time period. Seriously. Well done.
Very insightful video, i am an Ultraman big fan, grew up watching it in the 70s and 80s
as someone who only grew up with JUST Godzilla and Gammera Ultraman is a new frontier for me! i'd love to see more on the subject!
Thank you. Please do more. Ultraman is my favorite superhero series.
the sheer amount of labor is amazing
Ultraman without color-timer is like Iron Man without arc reactor.
I'm so exited to see this is FINALLY coming out!!! Remember watching this when I was a kid!
Yes, please. Some in depth on the decision to remove the color timer I would be interested in
