  • Shin Kamen Rider Review - Shin Kamen Rider (シン・仮面ライダー) is a 2023 Japanese superhero film directed and written by Hideaki Anno. Produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kamen Rider, it is the third reboot of a tokusatsu series to be adapted by Anno, following Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman, as well as the first without his frequent collaborator Shinji Higuchi. The film stars Sosuke Ikematsu, Minami Hamabe, Tasuku Emoto, Nanase Nishino, Shinya Tsukamoto, Toru Tezuka, Suzuki Matsuo, and Mirai Moriyama. In the film, a man and his female cohort attempt to eradicate the criminal organization responsible for his conversion into a mutant cyborg and stop their plans to conquer society.
Shin Kamen Rider is one of the most divisive of the Shin Series of movies by Studio Khara. When put up against Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman how does Shin Kamen Rider Compare?

This movie was freaking beautiful. I'm surprised people hated it. It felt true to the original vision of the series and told a simple, beautiful story.

They look at it from a storytelling, filmmaking stand point. Sometimes you’ll find issues from just the way it was shot, all the way to dialogue. I hope that tells a little more why some “real” Rider fans might not be liking it.

I dont understand the hate either. Seems more like its folks expecting the pace of a series...from a film...its like they never watched films before unless its a cross over film...which is rooted on a pre-established show and continuing that story.

Hi Zeo, nice to see you here :)
Short version, the movie felt narratively sloppy to me and I felt like there were many ways it could had been improved. The pacing is symptomatic of that, I like the the amount of forward momentum it had but there also felt like there was a lot missing. Personally I approach these things as a movie fan who likes Tokusatsu and not a Tokusatsu fan who watches movies. If that makes any sense, I tried really hard to be fair to my experience in any critiques made.

@@TheHighsea I think the issue for me was that a lot of the nitpicks regarding characters and their lack of development or how we got to where we are is due to them releasing a Prequel manga that dives into all that. Which is fine and all, but it shouldn't hold what we have presented in the film held back by all that. Changing my mindset into making this more of a Kill Bill style film did improve things a lot.

From a person who watches more than just Toku stuff and watched even more obscure cult following films, I think it was great. I don’t mind the convoluted stuff as long as it’s done right like a Gaspar Noe or a Lynch film. But it’s hard to recommend the movie for a general audience without prior knowledge to Rider lore. I do appreciate the fact Anno doesn’t dumb stuff down and not holding the masses hands. It definitely is a thought provoking movie since you have to actually pay attention otherwise you’re screwed if you missed one line like a Nolan movie. It wasn’t difficult for me to follow but I can see why it can be a turn off for some folks including the ones that want the reiwa tone and such. Shin Goji is still the best for the general audience but In the end overall, I think this is by far the definition of what a “rider” hero should be by Ishinomori intent especially if you compare it with the manga. The pacing felt fast to me but then again I did mention Lynch so I can handle slooooww burn films.
For me the Fan boi score is a 9/10 and a general audience score is a 8 or 7/10 cause it is a lot to process for a person to take. The reason why it lost a point on the fan boi section is cause of the scorpion…after reading the prequel manga it was disappointing for her arc.
P.S - do read the original manga and Shin Kamen Rider Shocker prequel manga so it’ll help enhance the experience(optional of course). It’s funny too how folks complain about darkness and the shaky cam, I can tell you now they’re way better than the majority of budget horror/martial arts films I’ve seen.

I think this looked like a summary of a full season more than a normal movie, like, it cut some parts of the episodes and tried to make it make sense. As someone who actually read the manga (whatever was in english at least) it didnt bother me that much, but I completely agree when you say I wouldnt really be able to recomend it to someone despite my personal feelings towards it

Personally, I liked it. It was very cool to see a Kamen Rider movie in theaters, in the west. It does feel like an updated version of the original Kamen Rider.
It does have pacing issues, some wonky cgi moments and design choices... but I was hooked on this movie.
One criticism that I can't overlook... I wish they made Takeshi Hongo more likable and have more personality... Ichimonji/Rider 2, was easily the best part of the movie because of his personality. Still, it was fun to watch and I'm glad I got to see it. At my theater, there were Kamen Rider fans in their 40, 50s and 60s, with their kids and grandkids... by the end of the movie... the kids were singing the theme song.

i'm a casual Heisei fan (finished 3 series and Black Sun) and my only takeaway here is how weird the CGI fightscenes are. i know it's bound to happen in tokusatsu but i just hoped it's gonna be different. imagine if they use mocaps for the action to retain the human element, and if they add more depth to their action as their character (like in Black Sun which they're using their extra appendages to full extent). but i enjoy and adore the remakes of original scenes

I loved it and a lot of kamen rider fans may disagree. True, K (as a character) was never fully realized. I wish I saw more too. Shin KR is not a rider movie, it’s a human movie. Rewatch the the fight scenes and pay attention to Hongo’s expressions… behind the mask. (Ex: him shaking putting on his helmet). It’s the humanity of Kamen Rider that Anno tries to capture in SKR. The movie forsure has a lot of exposition and a lot does happen in the movie. I agree on that point. The movie does feel crammed but I did not mind it. Maybe, if the movie had an extra 30mins or so, the movie wouldn’t have that effect.

I agree with your criticisms and have heard similar criticisms from some Japanese reviewers, but I rather liked the movie. I'd probably give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. It was well-shot and entertaining in its own way. After seeing so many superhero movies with origin stories, I am honestly kind of sick of it so found this style to be refreshing. My biggest gripe was the exposition. Especially with Hachi-aug. But both Ikematsu and Emoto also gave solid performances. Plus the final battle was quite entertaining. Though your average American viewer would probably not like it, especially with its lack of handholding. Black Sun was a disappointment, though, especially because I am a fan of Shiraishi.

Also, it did feel like there was a bigger story behind everything that just didn't fit into the movie. But I really had a great time watching it and I love that there are movies that don't try to appeal to the most people but try to be as good as it can for what it wants to be. Some of it is licensing, theaters have to pay for the license to show it, so s third party pays for the license (in this instant, Fathom) and broadcasts it on a limited run. It’s mostly about trying to secure a deal with a distributor after then the one/two night showing. I’d love for these to have a theatre run. I never think old kamen rider has a barrier to entry comparing to the newer ones that just over complicate itself just to sell toys. But the film did the terrible crime of tell but don't show. It started with expositions than letting audiences sees what happen. So yeah, if you have not watch the original run, you might think there's more to the origin story. But I feel like that's the overthinking on your end than anything else.
But I like the action & the pacing of this than Black Sun. If you want fun, Shin Kamen Rider will give you fun.

I believe shin ultraman has a more coherent story
than shin kamen rider. SKR storyline / transitions feel rough...definitely many camera headshots try to take it from the evangelion ones...YTber is right that there's no background story.
We learn about shocker thru the very short account from Ririko about the origin of shocker...the rich dude who committed suicide, the big AI "I" and its little *ahem* "f" toy "K"
What is shocker with no shocker foot soldiers in their black spandex with the outline of the skeleton trying to get more test subjects...?
Overall the movie is barely ok to so, so...if u are a fan of Minabe Hamabe (from the kakegurui life tv series & movies), then it was a GREAT movie...

The only good thing was seeing Nanase act in a big movie 😂 There were parts I enjoyed but overall it was meh. It did do what Amazon and Black Sun failed to do. The movie was actually consistent with it's themes but it was rushed, and used the violence for shock factor at least in the opening. I think it could have been better if it was more focused. The movie was a marathon and it didn't feel satisfactory to go through.

This film doesn't match up to the 2005 Kamen Rider the First which also has a very different vibe from the TV show. One of the things that made the original Kamen Rider show work were the fight scenes. It was very different and worked on many levels and the camera work was cool. Even Ultra man started flipping around because of Kamen Rider's influence. This movie is devoid of that just quick cuts and people moving around. The story is another take on Hongo and there is no problem with that but the "Shin" crew takes on established characters don't always work, especially if you're trying to take it outside of Japan. Another problem with the film is it no soul. I see the Kamen Rider costume but it the movie doesn't really have it's spirit a la Kamen Rider the First and it's sequel.). And with the show still on in some fashion it will draw comparisons to the other show(s). BTW the Spider Cyborg looks just like the one in Kamen Rider The First. Word is the designer of the character did it for this movie as well.

    1. I disagree for your first half of the review....the style and design and filmmaking does not feel appreciative or seem influenced by traditional Showa at all. It's mostly muddled, dark, poorly edited with invisible choreography (in other words, if there is action, good look seeing it) If anything, it's trying to be too Hollywood in that regard. Lots of grimdark and no passion,
Real tokusatsu (yeah, I'm going there)....part of the 'spirit of toku' .....is all about being daring enough...to take chances enough...to SHOW everything.
To even go as surreal as possible, regardless of whatever resources / budget is available.
    2. I agree with your second half, that the writing/plotting is terrible.
    3. I DO think this movie would be the most 'accessible' to Americans, mostly because it does feel more Hollywood than the previous two, and I've noticed the wilder toku gets (giant-sized heroes or monsters. for example). the harder it seems for many Westerners to accept. But human-sized characters they are more used to.
This is also (IMO) why the kaijin designs in this movie are so lame.....toned down...less fantastical. Just people in human clothes with helmets on. Hard to even call them kaijin.
If I didn't know better (I don't!) I'd say Anno made this film with American audiences in mind as his top priority.
    4. Overall, though, I just find these types of 'reimaginings' very lazy ideas. Anno is arrogant to me for 'redoing' the shows he supposedly loves, but with different FX. This is not creativity. This is not moving forward. This isn't what toku has always been about. Shin Gojira stood out because it was ALL NEW IDEAS that added to the legacy. It wasnt trying to redo the past.
But this new trend of him is 100% copy/paste, with added lens flare, oh, and reduced fun.
    (jumps off soapbox now)

I thought it had potential but yeah, it tried to do too much and got nowhere. My favourite fight scenes were also the super gory early fight scenes vs the faceless mooks. The later overly CG-ed stylized stuff was interesting in its own way, but overall looked kinda cheap. The final fight also felt a bit anticlimactic...
I can tell that it really respects the old school ways, but sometimes I feel it's at its own detriment. I don't think it needs to be super modernized or anything, but I think the intention from here needed to be tempered somewhat.

Yes I agree, this movie is for the hardcore showa fans. Too bad cuz I really wanted it to be a movie for the masses. I liked the visuals, and the story concept was good, especially for the times we live in. The mix of classic toku tropes with a modern twist was good too. But for me, the movie felt incomplete, especially in the story department. Also, maybe I am nagging too much about this but although the action scenes were good there were scenes with too much CGI, I understand some of these scenes may be too hard ( or too expensive) to do with practical effects, but It would've looked so much better. Those who watched the movie know which scene I'm talking about in particular.

Honestly, as a lifelong toku fan, i was stoked to see this movie. And in the end, there was really no point to the story being told. It had the makings of a modern update on the first season of Kamen Rider, cramed into two hours. But with Anno's chronic depression coloring everything.
I watched it again and ignored the story aside from the fight framework.
This movie then blew me away.
This! This was lore accurate Kamen Rider! A man, empowered by an unstable and un trustworthy piece of technology, fighting against foes as or stronger than him. Fighting battles no meer man could face! The action! The set pieces! The design.
That is where you could see the actors fanboy come out. He loved this series, and wanted the part he enjoyed the most to be perfect.
He just expected other super fans who grew up with the show to watch it.

Yeah, I'm gonna get crucified for this... *much like Ultraman* but would the "negatives" been put in near a "positive" light had it been ANYONE other than Anno?
Look, as an avid Toku watcher, I found the story to be trying to be edgelord *another problem I have with Anno in general*, it's incomprehensible, and feels like there was literally no direction for the "story" to begin with. And the whole "The bad guys plan is the same as Evengelion!" kinda sucked too.
Some of the actual nods to the early season of Rider made sense *the absurd blood splatters* and such.. but like.. Trying to give SHOCKER a reason for it's name gets bloody stupid.
And I disagree with the "Character growth" because... Except for Hongo early on, there was no real growth. The characters "changed" but there was no honest reasons for those changes. They just happened to keep the movie moving.
Also, the action.. I understand the point with changing from the main cameras to Iphone work.. but we've seen that with Ultraman before, and while it can do some cool shots, I'm not sure it'd be great for considering it new methods.
Honestly I though this Movie was about on Par with Kamen Rider The First.
Really while it seems like Anno and his company want to make the action scenes from Ultraman and Rider, to me they either miss the entire points, or the simply don't have the heart that the series does.

It feels more like a whole season of tv series condensed into one movie but leaves little room for character development to keep the audience engaged. It's a bloated two hour movie that are both full of action and boring at the same time. If I were Anno I would have keep the exposition to a minimum and possibly add more urgency to the general plot. Like, let's say Doctor Midorikawa before death gave them an assignment to stop this edo tensei prana bullshit machine from being turned on but to do so they would need to upload a kill program created by combining several keycodes held by Shocker's generals and they need to do it before a certain amount of weeks because Ruriko's body is deteriorating and she's the only one that could compile the completed key since that's what she was created for. Once the kill program is uploaded she can finally purge the nanomachines that are killing her from inside out, so that way we'd get some tension in the story because we want her to survive. The way they do it in the movie just feels like they're hunting down the Shocker augments for... Uh, I dunno revenge? They just seem like assassins for hire that the government is exploiting for their own ends. tl;dr the movie doesn't seem to have any plot whatsoever, Anno simply cobbled together as many monster of the week as he could and call it a movie. Hayato showing up near the end is a welcome sight since the whole movie before that point was just so Goddamn bleak.

I have watched Kamen Rider since I was a little kid in the 70s. With all the superheroes running around nowadays, Kamen Rider is still my #1.
So Shin Kamen Rider doesn't use storyboards? Now I see why.
As an artist working in feature animated films for over 30 years, Shin Kamen Rider failed because it doesn't use storyboards. I don't know why Hideaki Anno doesn't use storyboards; arrogant? Super low/no budget? If Hideaki uses storyboards, he will see that the movie is full of holes, and he can fit them before any shooting starts and make a much better movie. The only thing in Shin Kamen Rider that I like is Kamen Rider and Haichi Augment-01 costumes; everything else is sad. 2023 now and still making stupid film.

Shin Kamen Rider feels like an average episode of any Kamen Rider series of the recent decade. Just the dialogue was a bit choppy and story plot paces a bit faster in my opinion. Comparing Shin Kamen Rider to Kamen Rider: The First (2005), I prefer the faster pace and action in Shin while First have better story development and special effects that I find satisfying. Overall, Shin Kamen Rider is enjoyable for anyone who is familiar with tokusatsu and Kamen Rider but might hard for normies to like or buy into the world of Shin Kamen Rider.
