You will find that this is just an "average" performance for Sohyang when it comes to her epics i.e. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'I Have Nothing', 'Lean On Me', and the uncomparable 'Everyone' (make sure to use the Vimeo version w/ CC on). However, as impressive as all of those are, her performances on the show 'Begin Again' busking with a small gorup of musicians and singers around Korea are mind-blowing. Her subtle and delicate choices in the stripped-down acoustic arrangements are just beautiful. In a group of excellent singers she stands out prominently. This song was actually originally written and performed by Secret Garden (lyrics by Brendan Graham). Josh Groban is one of several hundred covers. This performance was on a show which celebrates and brings in famous singers from around the world whose songs the contestants have to reinterpret. The guest this particular episode was Shane Filan, a former member of the Irish boyband Westlife who also covered this song.
Shane Filan, a vocalist of the band Westlife, stands up and claps as soon as Sohyang's song is over. He praised her on this day. 😄

So Hyang is a 43 year old devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being healed by God, her goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She is not motivated by either money or fame. She has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. She is a published author of several books of fiction. She also lectures about singing and vocal technique at a South Korean university. She speaks fluent English. Even when she sings in Korean, it isn't necessary to understand the lyrics, because So Hyang is BRILLIANT at conveying the message/meaning of the song. Many of her performances she is singing ballads. However, she conquers every genre of music, including rock and rap ('Day Day'). She can spit bars as good as any rapper.

So Hyang is _the_ current _bona fide_ Super Star of the female singing universe, whether most people know who she is or not. She sang this while suffering from pneumonia. Her doctor said don't do it, but she did not want to disappoint her fans so she came in and leveled the building with this performance. She mostly disappeared for two years after this due to eight recurring bouts of pneumonia.
The lyrics for this song are lifted almost word for word straight from the New Testament, so it isn't really a motivational song but a song of Christian faith that God will help us over every obstacle we face in life if we surrender our lives to Him and rely on Him when things get too tough for us to face alone. This is largely So Hyang's life story and certainly was the night she performed this. It was written by a man from Ireland named Brendan Graham. Josh Groban may sing this song but he didn't write it. The guy in the audience the camera kept coming back to is Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife, who had a very big hit with this song back in the 2000s. That night's performances were in honour of him and his group's hits. He said So Hyang's was his favourite version now. Easy to see why, isn't it? The Whitney and Mariah comparison is literally the most common thing you hear people say. Her influences are very apparent in her style.
She is a rare human. She's always heavily involved in the arrangements she sings, she has absolutely incredible technique that is essentially self taught. She's written fantasy novels, and so much more.
She could be touring the world making millions, but instead, every performance she gives is something she chooses specifically to do. Her music is not for making money, it's for comforting those in need. And in every performance, you can see she completely connects to the song she's singing. Her musicality and technique are born out of years of singing and her sheer passion for expressing herself through song.

Thank you for your Wonderful reaction to this Beautiful Lady ! Ahead of describing her as a Unbelievable Performer, I would say ,SoHyang is just a Wonderful , kind, caring and humble Lady! She is a Fighter too! So many road blocks , hardships on her Path! She was advised to not do this Performance, by her Doctor! You see she was still battling the last stages of Pneumonia! She remembered back when she was struggling with depression, after her Father left her Mother and Her! She remembered listening to Whitney, Celine and her favourite, Mariah! The comfort and peace their voices had brought her! She had been told and witnessed herself, the effect her voice also seemed to have on her Audiences ! So she said,”I must Perform as someone out in that crowd may need to hear my message in this song and I Promised, God, after he saved my life, that that is exactly what I would do with my second chance at life! So she did! She gave it her all as did those around her! She had Pneumonia 8 times over an 5 year period and battled through! She thought about quitting but while recovery I g one time. She was visiting her sister-in-law in the USA , and one day came across a Banner of a quote from former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, that said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” She knew God was telling her if she quit now she may regret her choice in the future! So she headed back to Korea and signed up for , “The King of Masked Singer”, that she had been asked to join! She set a new record for consecutive wins by a women with seven segment wins and gaining a huge fan base!
Though she never set out to be a professional singer, she had come to dream of being a Big Star in America! She said she had many arguments with, God , over her desire! God won and on three separate occasions she has turned down contracts with big record companies(most recently with Sony Music)
She states that she had convinced herself the fame was to better serve God and reach more people who suffered! She said ,God had said it was that she was becoming prideful and wanted it for herself and that she still had work to do and a contract with a big company would restrict her and push her into more sickness! She said she agreed and had to keep humility! Her Friend and Father-in-Law has been her Manager for years now! She doesn’t like the term ,” Manager”, so usually calls him, “Her Biggest Supporter” and points out her, “Best Friend”, also helps out a great deal, to. That person she describes as her,” Best Friend”, is her Mother-in-Law( she just calls them, Mom and Dad! Both of them are Christian Ministers Her Husband and Her live in his Parents home! They each have a floor of their own with another floor for a practice area and recording studio ! Her Husband(Kim Hee-jun)
is a Drummer and Producer( she started out in his Family Christian Music Band, POS. , which also included her Sister-in-Laws ! She discovered she had cervical cancer at twenty, just after her marriage, which left her unable to naturally bear children and also with Hepatitis due to tainted blood she had received! She is a devote Christian,ls a successful published Author of Fantasy Novels, Part time teacher of Voice and Performance at Baekseok University in Cheonan City, she also likes to design and make things( did interior design in their home ) , she plays guitar and is a genius at arrangements, she and her team arrange all her songs though she says it is a team thing and involves many( her husband is involved , and also in song selection!
Sorry I get carried away talking about this woman and her Family! I particularly love her songs in Korean ( I do not speak or understand Korean, but with her you Feel the song) Can never pick just one favourite, I have at least 20 favourites! I think the song I last listened to is my Favourite! Here are two songs she wrote one about following her in never giving up on your Dreams( the song title is Dream and her nickname is Dreamer) The other is called, The Day is Sunny Kiss( about the sunny day when at 18 she met and fell in love with,”Jesus”!)

This song was originally composed by Norweigan - Irish duo, Secret garden. Rolf Lovland was the composer and Brendan Graham, the Lyricist. This beautiful song has been performed by dozens of Artists Worldwide including Josh Groban. At around 6.40 you can see the camera zoom in on Shane Filan from the Global Irish `Boy Band`, Westlife, who first really put this song on the map with a wonderful performance. Sohyang has a fantastic voice and sings with so much emotion, and does a great job here, even if it`s not my favourite interpretation. I just think the original is so good that it does not need to be altered in any major way. That is not to take away anything from her performance here. She is a star.

Additional info, her vocal cords were very damaged and she actually planned on this performance to be her very last, ever. BUT LOOK AT HER SHE IS INCREDIBLE! Good thing she is recovered and performing more these days :) everybody stay healthy!

It is a well known back-ground story that, at the time of this incredible performance, she was going through very tough time because of pneumonia. And she was actually considering to retire entirely because of pain and everything... She confessed later that, before the stage, all she could do was praying to the lord that she would not mess up this beautiful song ㅜㅜ This is why you can hear the slight huskiness of her voice at the very beginning of the performance. Knowing that and listening to the lyrics, you can imagine what she was thinking when she was performing... There is no doubt that she is the living example of how the lord works on us. Thank you for this fantastic reaction vid. Great job!

Phenomonal performance. She definitely deserves to be the Queen vocalist in all times!
This performance is impressive, especially, given the fact the PHENOMENAL So Hyang was not well, as she had just been released from the hospital, still recovering from one of her numerous bouts with pneumonia. However, this performance is just a small sample of the weapons in her vocal arsenal. Vocal coaches and opera singers agree, So Hyang's technique is FLAWLESS and EFFORTLESS. Her vocal range is RIDICULOUS and her breath control is INSANE. Some fans jokingly question if So Hyang is even human.
BTW, So Hyang, along with her husband and music assistants, arranges every aspect of her live performances; the music, background vocals, staging, etc.
