I Love So Hyang! She is very good and has an outstanding vocal talent, however she CANNOT compare with Whitney/Céline/Mariah ... yet. She has the necessary talent but needs to come up with her own songs and her own flair as an artist. It's easy for a good singer to perform a great song well, but the true artist MAKES his/her great song. Having mastery of your tool doesn't make you a great artisan if you have no inspiration/imagination. She has her own songs, but mostly in Korean and often with Christian content. She is a gospel singer and well known in churches. You have to understand, SoHyang is not focused on an international career. I think she doesn't really care about a career in Korea either. There is no record deal or anything like that. She is a real authentic singer and not a music worker.

When she sang "You Raise Me Up," she had only gotten out of the hospital for pneumonia the day before. The doctor told her to not even speak, much less sing. And she did that performance. This is Sohyang healthy. Whole other level!

Tom, I think this is the greatest performance of music ever captured by microphones and cameras. So Hyang isn't just on a different level. She _is_ that level. The first time I ever heard So Hyang sing was this performance and I knew right then and there that she was the greatest singer and performer I had ever heard. I was 61 at the time, two years ago, and then I discovered this almost endless list of her other _live_ performances, and she is without question without peer. The greatest singer of our generation. It is almost like time out of mind. She takes you on a journey and you _will_ go along for the ride--and come back for more. Elvis did a really well known cover of it too. If you just put in the name of the song on Google, Sohyang and Elvis pop right up after S&G.
This is great? Sohyang performances in Immortal Song 2 are all at this level. Chills and goosebumps guaranteed. Even a Christmas song O Holy Night is epic. In some churches performance, she would knelt down on the 2nd chorus and remain there for the rest of the song. Watch to believe it.

You are correct to put her in the top level class! Too many say things like one singer is better than another when that is a matter of personal taste. I love Whitney, Mariah and Dion but Sohyang is the most relatable to me and so I dusted off a spot on that lofty pedestal and placed her upon it!

More you study vocal techniques and singing in general, more you appreciate Sohyang. She is not just singing. She is “crafting” her voice her tone, volume to the song. Her placement of resonance changes constantly to magnify the effect. Most singers, even the most accomplished singers, often sing a song with the natural tone and voice that they are born with. I am not saying singing with a natural voice is inferior. I am just mesmerized by the range of techniques sohyang has in her arsenal, which is second to none, and she can craft just about every song with her technique in her toolbox and turn it into a piece of artwork. More you study the music and vocal techniques, more i discover them in her songs, and that’s when you get a goosebump and really see the “craftsmanship” she put into her songs. And i think that’s why vocal coaches react strongly to Sohyang, because they can see these things and they know how difficult it is when an average joe, like my old self, will only see the high notes she hits.
I agree, So Hyang is perhaps the best singer on the planet (with Dimash), maybe even more versatile and controlled than Whitney and Mariah (I love Whitney, but...). It's one thing to just "sing" a song without really mean what you sing. From a technical point of view it might be impeccable but the heart's not fully in it. When it comes to Sohyang she means every word she sings she has been through some hard times in life. She feels God gave her a second chance.

I am crying more for this my 40-50th listen, than I was for my first listen. She gives everything she has to her music. Watching her sing is exhausting because you actually feel her level of effort. That last little bit where she goes from whispering, 'I will lay me' then goes straight into a full on belt and then the little kick at the end was perfect. Just as He is through her.
Loving watching you discover this amazing vocalist. You really need to see her singing Arirang Alone from Immortal songs. It is in Korean, but there are versions with English subs. She will blow your mind. She is like no other. Her voice is a gift from God and she uses it to make us feel beyond anything I have ever felt.

First she make a traditional performance, second verse is dramatic (with the choir and her giving it a full voice) and when she kicks in third verse, you get the feeling that this is the ULTIMATE version of this song. You are correct to put her in the top level class! Too many say things like one singer is better than another when that is a matter of personal taste. I love Whitney, Mariah and Dion but Sohyang is the most relatable to me and so I dusted off a spot on that lofty pedestal and placed her upon it!

More you study vocal techniques and singing in general, more you appreciate Sohyang. She is not just singing. She is “crafting” her voice her tone, volume to the song. Her placement of resonance changes constantly to magnify the effect. Most singers, even the most accomplished singers, often sing a song with the natural tone and voice that they are born with. I am not saying singing with a natural voice is inferior. I am just mesmerized by the range of techniques sohyang has in her arsenal, which is second to none, and she can craft just about every song with her technique in her toolbox and turn it into a piece of artwork. More you study the music and vocal techniques, more i discover them in her songs, and that’s when you get a goosebump and really see the “craftsmanship” she put into her songs. And i think that’s why vocal coaches react strongly to Sohyang, because they can see these things and they know how difficult it is when an average joe, like my old self, will only see the high notes she hits.
I agree, So Hyang is perhaps the best singer on the planet (with Dimash), maybe even more versatile and controlled than Whitney and Mariah (I love Whitney, but...). It's one thing to just "sing" a song without really mean what you sing. From a technical point of view it might be impeccable but the heart's not fully in it. When it comes to Sohyang she means every word she sings she has been through some hard times in life. She feels God gave her a second chance.

I am crying more for this my 40-50th listen, than I was for my first listen. She gives everything she has to her music. Watching her sing is exhausting because you actually feel her level of effort. That last little bit where she goes from whispering, 'I will lay me' then goes straight into a full on belt and then the little kick at the end was perfect. Just as He is through her.

Loving watching you discover this amazing vocalist. You really need to see her singing Arirang Alone from Immortal songs. It is in Korean, but there are versions with English subs. She will blow your mind. She is like no other. Her voice is a gift from God and she uses it to make us feel beyond anything I have ever felt.
