This Master Class performance is even more impressive, given the fact the 8th Wonder Of The World, So Hyang, was released from the hospital prior to this performance. She was still recovering from one of her numerous bouts with pnuemonia
(Eight times between 2016 - 2018). Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest.
However, So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Also, she believed her singing career was over. Afterwards, she kept a very low profile for almost two years, and refrained from public
singing. From her return in approximately 2020, to present day, So Hyang has proven her technique is ROCK SOLID. If it's even possible, she sounds better than ever before.
When you inhaling and exhaling, that is what I am doing exactly the same. 🤣
The European guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that her version was his new favourite. Not hard to see why, eh?
The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and performance, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever.
Here is how to pronounce Sohyang properly. So is just as it would be in English. The h and y are where it takes a slight bend in the road. They are pronounced as English speakers would say Hugh or huge or humongous. And the the ang is said as ong or ung with the o being soft and u as well. Sohyang, all one word and the spelling is from her passport, so that is how it is correctly spelled, too.
Sohyang was named by her grandmother, whom she believes God inspired with the name even though neither her parents nor grandmother were Christians. Her name means "enjoy the light" as people have correctly informed me. Sohyang's favourite movie star is Brad Pitt. Like "duh," eh? What woman doesn't love Brad Pitt? Ha, ha! 😎 Sohyang is a 100% self-taught singer except for a handful of sessions with Seth Riggs, which she didn't talk about in the interview I learned this from, so I think she had her Seth Riggs lessons after 2009 when this interview was recorded. She said she spent time with one of the producers of Boyz II Men while on vacation in California and learned either vocal technique or audio recording technique or both because he had a home recording studio. When she watches movies she doesn't take her hubby along because she wants to concentrate on the film without anyone interrupting or talking to her. Sorry hubby, but you can be so distracting and annoying at the movies! 😝 Sohyang likes action movies! She carries her Bible with her most places. It is an English New International Version and she tries to read five chapters a day, because it helps her stay fresh on her English.
Oh yes, Sohyang wanted to be involved in musicals on stage but was offered the role of Carmen, which she turned down because Carmen was a prostitute. It sounded like she was offered prostitute roles repeatedly, so she more or less gave up on anything operatic. Though, of course, she did appear in "The Sound of Music." She is just one of those naturally wholesome women, and I think that is one of the reasons we like her. 😇❤
Sohyang is also analytic to the nth degree! She will listen to a song she likes over and over until she is satisfied she knows it inside out. The bass line, the drums, the vocals. She keeps going until she has almost worn out the recording. Well, she didn't say that last part but it is pretty obvious that she knows her music and when she decides to cover a song, she is going to cover it like it has never been covered before! If you want something without backup vocals and very little instrumentation I would go with "I Will Always Love You" that she did on Begin Again Korea.
Also really, one could say he is the male Sohyang as she is 44 and he is only late twenties. Sohyang has been singing for over 20 years since he was in Kindergarten. She isn't well known because she has no large label backing, which is her choice due to her health and her faith. She is a cancer survivor who had many years of repeated bouts of pneumonia and she was recovering from one of those here.
The arrangement is a masterpiece, the vocals are stunning, and more remarkable is the fact that she performed this whilst recovering from pneumonia. As for being the female Dimash,; Sohyang is incomparable. She is an elite level vocalist in her own right and does not need to be compared to anyone. Now you know why Sohyang is called Queen Sohyang! She was sick that day and had to take extra breaths, but the performance is stunning. She sounds even better when she's healthy. The only stripped down videos I've seen are on a pier during Covid when she sang for Korean dockworkers. There was a group of singers, but she sang at least one song alone. The first time I heard Sohyang was when she sang "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." She made it entirely her own, and her version is my favorite, better than the original. One of her signature songs. You've got the best vocalist alive right there. Don't underestimate the number of varied magical performances she has because it's at least as many as Dimash...a lot. And this one really doesn't even touch the magic. Just her performances in masked singer blows away most anyone and they aren't even reached that much... because there's a lot. Mona Lisa is rock, Day Day is rap...it's amazing too lol... Home and Breathe are magical. And Fate from I am singer is just a rocket. You will hardly get recommended those because of so many others. But those... Breathe and Fate make more tear up than the others even. But anyway this is not near top ten to me... fwiw. If that tells you anything.

Great reaction! As a die hard fan of So Hyang I can honestly say this performance is maybe 30% of what she usually does in terms of difficulty and skill level. I am not even exaggerating. She did this performance while sick with a pneumonia. You will hear many comments about it because she has became even more legendary for having such an amazing live performance of this song while being sick. React to Arirang Alone, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Everyone, I Have Nothing or Dream and then you will see why Dimash is considered the male version of So Hyang.
As a gospel/CCM singer she naturally sings with choirs and choruses. A good "I will always love you" others suggested. Magnificent "Everyone" represents a totally different genre, features different timbres and stylings, both lower and higher portions of her range, largely without the chorus and partly solo a capella. (The Vimeo versions have English subtitles.) "Misty" features only her voice and beautiful in yet another very different style. The Begin Again version has minimal instrumentation.
How about song written by Sohyang "Stay" in Korean language on Begin Again Korea. She sang outside with no back up singers.
When I want to feel shocked and amazed I listen to Dimash. He is brilliant. But when I want feelings of happiness joy and warmth I listen to this beautiful woman. Comparing them I think is pointless. They are both wonderful in their own unique way

She was recovering from her latest bout of pneumonia, even worse for a singer as it affects your lungs, & had been advised by the doctor not to perform. As an avid Sohyang fan I can assure you that although this performance is fantastic, it is only a fraction of what she is capable of. Not only is she an elite vocalist but she is also a very talented musical arranger & is responsible for the arrangement of all her performances. She is also a published author of fantasy novels & all this whilst suffering poor health. It may not seem that this performance is ‘Dimash’ level, I can tell you that now you have been introduced to Sohyang, I know the Sohyang recommendations that are gonna come your way & I have no hesitation in telling you that IMO they all outdo the performance you have just seen, although I realise that it’s about personal preference so not everybody will agree.
You are right in mentioning Westlife having a hit with this song, unless you’re from the US, where people know it as a song made popular by Josh Grogan. The actual composer of this song was actually Irish & he was blown away by sohyang’s version. I don’t know if you took any notice of the ‘western’ lookin guy the camera kept going to but that was Shane Filan, lead singer of Westlife, who was in the audience because the theme of that particular weeks show was in fact ‘the songs of Westlife’. You should check out her performance of ‘lean on me’ from another episode of this show, where she blew Michael Bolton away with her rendition of the song & led him to say her performance was ‘spectacular’ & that she had taken on the role of ‘virtuoso’, but this is only when he could actually speak as he was initially speechless when the host first went to him for his comments.

In my never to be humble opinion, whenever So Hyang covers a song, sometimes she makes the original sound like a demo tape. She updates and elevates the song, giving it more polish and shine.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!

Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

• First is a type of Korean traditional music.

• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an enthusiastic and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

Also just try searching "Sohyang Arirang Alone vocal coach" and look at the thumbnails. I'd do that for most of hers. The charasmatic voice called her a vocal goddess. Julia Nilon is 5 for 5 on the tears. Again the thing is only a few reactors commit to doing most of them and getting to the other absurd magic out there. Few even do I have nothing...but the ones that do say she even owns that like you just said and we're talking Whitney here lol. The ones always done are this one, Bridge over troubled water, Arirang Alone and Everyone. Arirang Alone is at least a top two on her. I don't massively get the Everyone one being placed so high or bridge... only because some of the others are just different and magical. Lean on Me... she owns that one by a long ways too lol. Another worth checking out vocal coach thumbnails on for a hint.
But after going through them all so much I personally love Arirang Alone...Fate... Breathe... Home.... and Misty from begin again korea...a Jazzy one. All those are epic and only Arirang is frequently reacted to. It's just sad reactors end up stopping too early as missing epic stuff. Especially vocal coaches because it's like boy you'd have to get a kick out of them .

Exactly. She has mastered every technique while Dimash is amazing he has more to learn to be on So Hyang's level. I love Dimash but he can't make me tear up like So Hyang can countless time. Here is the kicker, I am usually not an emotional person so thats pretty amazing that she can make a grown military man sob his eyes out lol.

She is a great singer not only because she has such a high note or perfect skill, but also she always makes listners moved with her sincerity. There are other singers who can hit high note, and they can surprise me. However she doesn't just surprise me. She always takes me to her own world and comfort me. Let's go to her another awesome cover, "Bridge over the trouble water" from the same TV show. You will be amazed once again : )

'Misty' from the Korean BeginAgain Concert would be a great song to hear her beautiful voice without another singer involved. But she shares her music with everyone. She is not one who cares to hog the spotlight, so many of her songs are with a lot of others involved. That is her nature. But, trust me, she is the best female singer on the planet to many, many experts and laymen alike. No one has quite the complete package of breath control, dynamics, range, power and above all, her way with her audience. None better. The most honest singer I have ever heard. Always from the heart. She just happens to have the best technique over most other very authentic singers, even singers like Lara Fabian, who I love, and Eva Cassidy, who was an angel on earth. Queen Sohyang is simply the best of the elite . Incomparable , heavenly and outstandingly unique .
There are some that say she is better than. Dimash, and the reason being is, that she sings with TRUE honest feelings as if she is living the song and telling it to you. Dimash has more of a put on feeling to his songs.
This was a tiny sample. Probably the worst of her live performances only because she has pneumonia, and those of us who follow her know the one note she strained on only because she had a bad throat and weak lungs at the time. She was told by a DR. that day not to speak, yet she performed anyway. The man they kept showing on the audience was Shane Fillon from West Life. I am sure I spelled his last name wrong.

Sohyang is not just the best female vocalist, but THE BEST in my opinion. She has many fabulous songs and covers performances. And A Must react to is "Everyone". Even she herself said it's a difficult song. Would also strongly recommend you to react to another great Korean group called Forestella. This group is very different from those kpop idol groups. Trust me, you won't regret! Their cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody is a good start and I look very much forward to see your reactions to both Sohyang and Forestella. Cheers.

So Hyang is by far the best female pop singer out right now. I don't care what country you are from. She is better than any female singer in the USA by far. Korea puts out amazing singers. Another singer to check out is Park Ki Young. She and So Hyang are best friends. Park and So Hyang are equals. These are the 2 best female pop singers in the world. That is saying a lot.
I don't agree that she is a female dimash. She and he are completely different from each other.
She has perfect vocal technique in the term of traditional pop and gospel vocals, but he focuses on a more operatic fusion sound with wide range he has.
Sohyang cannot follow Dimash's range, but Dimash cannot follow Sohyang's technique. Dimash's range is so wide that it breaks the existing concept of tessitura, but on the other hand, he doesn't show impressive tessitura either.
Also So Hyang is a Gospel/CCM singer that was anointed by God to minister spiritual messages. That is why almost every reactors tear up with So Hyang. Dimash is amazing as well but he is more of shock and awe and not as many people get emotional with him. Plus So Hyang has over 15 years more of vocal maturity than Dimash which isn't his fault. She has vast more knowledge in techniques, timing, diction(English song) , stamina, color manipulation, support and resonance. This all will come in time for Dimash eventually. It takes time and many years to master all those techniques. He is in his 20's so maybe in his 30's it will all click. I follow Dimash also but So Hyang is the only vocalist in the world that makes me tear up and takes me on a journey with her when she sings.

I love Dimash and watched all his performances but only So Hyang can make feel the emotions when she sings. Sorry Dimash. Maybe one day he will get the experience and know how to connect with people better like So Hyang can so easily.
