This phenomenal lady came to the stage for this song, from hospital bed and returned there afterwards, recovering from pneumonia. Doctor's orders was to not even speak. She sang this song with the impression that this was her last time on stage singing. She stopped for around 2 years and this particular arrangement of hers was one of the factors that she returned back to us, performing again.

No matter what Sohyang sings, she injects life into you. She is the most extraordinary woman I know of. You can tie your behind to a piano and it will prove futile because Sohyang's performance will literally suck you into the emotion and power she exudes, piano and all! She is the most magical singer I have come across in my entire six and one half decades on this planet. Sohyang is a once in a lifetime singer. The guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The television program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that after hearing her version "the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up" and it was "amazing" and "outstanding!" Not hard to see why, eh? The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and rendition, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Sohyang had to _really_ pull back on concerts after this appearance, and thought it might actually be the last one of her singing career due to the serious pneumonia. Thus the Irish embassy had a difficult time finding Sohyang but they did finally get a hold of her and delivered Mr. Graham's message. Other than this one performance, we know of only two other times Sohyang has performed this rendition of "You Raise Me Up," both in 2018. When she changes key there a couple of times near the end of the song and belts those high notes so powerfully, you expect her to actually lift off the stage and go into orbit! Yes, Sohyang is famous for throwing in everything and leaving it all on the stage--including the kitchen sink! This Master Class performance from the PHENOMENAL So Hyang is even more impressive because she IS NOT well here. Some time prior to this event, she was released from the hospital, still recovering from her most recent bout with severe pneumonia (eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, around the same time, she was experiencing vocal cord issues and believed her singing career was over. In an interview, she said that God humbled her because she couldn't understand how this was happening to her. So Hyang wanted to perform one last time. After this event, she disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. She returned in 2020. In 2024, at 46 years old, not only is she aging in reverse, she sounds better than ever before, if that's even possible. Her vocal range is still RIDICULOUS, and her breath control remains INSANE.
We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek! She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. If you do a closeup you can see her tongue was white which is a sign of a someone that is not 100% plus if you know So Hyang like we do, you can tell by her face she was not feeling well.

Thank you for reacting to this Amazing Aritist! Here are two songs one a rearranged version of a 600+ year old Korean Folk song ! It starts like an opera and ends like a hurricane just struck! This version has become to be more like a second National Anthem! Taking on the struggle for freedom , splitting and someday become united, strong and free! SoHyang is very religious to and spent her first 20 years or more singing CCM( Contemporary, Christian song in her husband and siblings FamilyBand in 50 + countries around the world His Parents are both ministers and also Co- manage SoHyang, making sure she gets enough rest! She was discovered to have ovarian Cancer at 20 years old , after her marriage!she credits God for saving her as both her and her husband said they had repeated dreams where God kept pushing for them to hurry up and get married! It was only after marriage she felt compelled to see a doctor for a complete physical , where the doctor found a dark spot on one of her ovaries and said she should have surgery immediately before it got worse! During surgery he Removed the affected ovary, then double check the other to find it was also in bad shape! He paused the surgery and called her husband and his parents and told them it of the new development and that by removing the second ovary she would no longer be able to have children,but to reduce the chance of her dying he recommend it too be removed!Her husbands Parents spoke up immediately say , just save the girl , they can adopted if they want children as there are many needle orphans in Korea and around the World and they would all love that child as much as if she gave both to it ! So the doctor did and SoHyang says she is grateful for that decision and to God for hurting the marriage know she would have herself checked out ! Because of the surgery or her travel she caught Hepatitis and in a about a 2 1/2 year period she got very sick with pneumonia 8 times and almost gave up singing because she was letting down so many people When god saved her she promised to use her voice to comfort his Lambs! So Hyang is bringing back the power ballad in the new independent album she released in Nov '24 entitled "DIVA", named to honor the diva's Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and others, from which, by listening to and imitating, she has become the singer she is today. For this album, So Hyang and her team, C. P. K., wrote some power ballads, such as ""Til You Love Me Again", and "Surrender". I absolutely loved your reaction. I couldn't help but subscribe! Well, now you've heard So Hyang after coming from the hospital after having pneumonia, you will really dig some of her other stuff. I maintain that she is not only the best female singer we have on earth now but her live performances are mind boggling, maybe the best of all time for a soloist female singer. You have to see her 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' from KBS K-Pop TV (the one with about 10M views). It is like nothing you have ever heard before, I promise. It really is far more spectacular than this little ditty. Her 'I Have Nothing' from the 2015 DMC Festival is the best, to me, that that particular song has ever been sung live, and, yes, I love Whitney as well. Her Korean-English song 'Everyone' is a masterclass in vocals, and a marathon. For softer stuff, 'Misty' (old jazz standard) from the Begin Again Concert and 'Angel' (from a recent busking tour in Spain -- her as a blonde, again like here only more so). Like you said near the end 'We don't have that anymore!' So true, except with So Hyang. Also, her cover of Lady Gaga's 'I'll Never Love Again' while on the same tour is so remarkable given it is on a street with minimal instrumental backing up. As a long time sohyang fan, I have to admit that although this is still an amazing performance, I think this isn’t as pristine as most of her other performances, which is understandable as she was advised by the doctors looking after her not to sing as she was still recovering from her latest bout of pneumonia. Anyone familiar with Sohyang would probably agree that she looks very pale & tired & like she’s lost weight from her face. Not only is she an amazing vocalist but she is also responsible for her own arrangements. I think a performance that is a must for you is her performance of ‘arirang alone’ from the ‘immortal songs’ series ( it’s the performance that has the most views). I just know you would love it, having said that, any musician with an in-depth knowledge of music can’t help but be impressed, even if it’s just from a technical point of view. You just mentioned you love Whitney, so I urge you to check out a couple of performances that are very different. Firstly her performance of ‘I have nothing’ from the DMC festival, a performance that led David Foster, the songs writer,to go to Korea to seek her out & perform with her. And secondly, a low key performance done during the pandemic to a small audience of essential workers of ‘I will always love you’, like you’ve never heard it before. I believe that a lot of people, myself included, first experience of this amazing woman is her performance of ‘bridge over troubled water’ from the ‘immortal songs’ series and I know that some really great sohyang fans are probably right this very moment composing you lists of her performances, along with the links, please use them. She can literally sing any genre, rock, pop, blues/jazz ( check out her performance of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’, again done during the pandemic) she can rap, obviously the big power ballads but her heart is with gospel music & elements of gospel can often be heard in her arrangement of songs that aren’t usually associated with the gospel genre in their original form. She is self taught, apart from when she spent some time the very famous voice coach Seth Riggs when on vacation in the US, it was he who taught her how to sing in her mixed voice & sohyang is widely known as the ‘queen of mix’. You should check out her back story & the continuous health problem she has had to live with since beating cancer in her early 20’s,which will also go some way to explaining why she isn’t the world famous diva her voice surely merits. She actually chooses not to follow the path of fame & fortune and has turned down all of the world’s biggest record companies who have tried to sign her. She is the most beautiful human being, both inside & out. I am so excited for you that have taken your 1st step into the amazing world of sohyang & i know that there are so many more performances that are more impressive than this, although I appreciate that ultimately it comes down to personal taste. She is the essence of joy. I don't know if the fans have told you this, but she designs the musical arrangement, chorus, orchestra, and staging for all of her live performances. So, yes, you are seeing every bit of her enormous talent in all of these performances. At the height of this performance, when the music stops, and Sohyang soars up to sing "I", it must have echoed across Heaven and surely the Angels stopped for a moment to hear one of their own. Her condition was so bad due to severe pneumonia that the doctor tried to dissuade her from performing, but she did her best to keep her promise, and after this performance, she did not sing in official schedules such as broadcasts for about two years. Nevertheless, many people were moved and comforted and encouraged. As time passed, she came back and told people that she was dissatisfied with her singing in the worst condition, but she was more moved by the audience, so she gained courage and strength. Welcome to Sohyang's world. :) I love this version, it's the only time that she sang this arrangement that is easily found. She was getting over a bout of pneumonia here too. Sohyang is a cancer survivor who struggled with her health for many years. She is the best female singer alive today. Not well known because she remains an independent artist due to her health and her faith, so no large label backing. Sohyang is well loved and respected, but nothing beats the first time hearing her. :)

Sohyang disappeared for about 18 months after this to try and get herself well as she had been having so many bouts of pneumonia. This is due to her having hepatitis from a blood transfusion she got while undergoing surgery for tumors. She had early stage ovarian cancer diagnosed right after she got married when she was about 21. Her health struggles have been a very long ongoing battle. This is why we like to be sure reactors get the best videos. This one is special however as it's the only time she did this arrangement, or at least one that can be found. It's not just me who regrets that she, who could have become a global star, ultimately gave up contracts with major foreign companies just for religious reason, tearfully setting aside her greed as a humble human. Did we not witness her representing what arrangement and singing truly are with just this one song? It is an arrangement and singing technique that will remain in the history of global popular music. She left a masterpiece that even other singers, including herself now, cannot cover. Her discography, of course, is filled with iconic performances that showcase her extraordinary talent for arrangement and stagecraft, making them nearly impossible for others to replicate easily. It is an incredibly magnificent song where all musical and non-musical elements on stage perfectly blend, providing listening pleasure. If you know of one of the Korean instrument Danso, I must acknowledge your background. Although it was introduced on screen as an Irish flute, don't woodwind instruments of that type usually have similar tones? I'm not sure. Anyway, I must warn you that there are numerous reactors who struggle with broadcast copyrights and give up reacting to her. lol. Typically, the first song that introduces her world of music is the most important, and this song wouldn't be a bad choice for that purpose. If you make a wrong introduction or if someone has a lot of prejudices like you might have, they might dismiss her or give up before truly appreciating her. She is one of the few singers who can sing any song we want to hear with the highest quality. I think the tone of a singer's voice accounts for about 2/3 of their ability. I mean, If you dislike the tone, no matter how excellent the technique and emotion are, you wouldn't listen. As someone who is familiar with classical music, I believe she possesses super tone, technique, and emotion, and she is a wonderful person with admirable character and even courage as well. I seriously doubt if there is a more perfect singer in the world. I hope you continue to take good care of her in the channel and wish for the prosperity of your one. Finally, true fans and reactors of hers know well that her Korean songs are more precious. If you stop at covering foreign songs, you are not a fan.😊
That isn't exactly the full picture. The main reason she has not made the ultimate effort for world wide exposure is her health issues and her inability to go on tour which would be stressful for her well being..

No one appreciates So Hyang more than musicians do, because they understand what they're listening to, and it's not _just_ beauty they're hearing, it's astounding _world-class_ _talent_ and musicianship! So Hyang sings in the center of the pitch better than anyone I've ever heard. In my opinion, there are two aspects of this performance which indicate So Hyang is not completely well: 1) she goes into her falsetto to hit a high note toward the end of the song which she would normally belt with no problems, and 2) she doesn't hold the last note of the song very long, whereas she would normally hold it for twice as long. Miraculously, the tone of her voice and pitch as are perfect as always. She is truly an angel and a blessing!! Next up should be _Arirang Alone_ followed by _Bridge Over Troubled Water_. Not only is she likely the best singer in the world but what is really special is the emotion she invokes. No other singer can consistently bring tears to my eyes.
Sohyang released this year a great new Whitney Houston style song "Til You Love Me Again" written by her and her two regular collaborators (CPK). KBS kpop channel has a high quality live outdoor performance. There are excellent videos of her" "I Have Nothing" and "I Will Always Love You" covers. Sohyang has been and is still primarily a gospel singer. She sings to bring comfort to others. Two other Korean vocalist you should know would be Song Sohee who sings in a very traditional way with unmatched skill. The other is HYNN who is likely the best ballad singer I've heard.
Sohyang is not one of my favorites singer but my only favorite singer. You must see a lot of her songs like: Bridge Over Troubled Water, I have Nothing, oh Holy Night, Misty, Amazing Grace…. Many many more. I love your reaction.
As I’m sure you’ll find out soon, if not already, that sohyang probably sings from a place that many would not understand because we are so lucky to have this wonderful human being with us at all as she discovered she had ovarian cancer in her early 20’s & although she beat it, because of the treatment she was left unable to have children of her own. She also contracted hepatitis from a blood transfusion. She has repeated bouts of pneumonia, an absolute disaster for singers as it affects the lungs. Also, contrary to what many think, why wouldn’t you?!!!, she has had no formal training except for when on a vacation in the US one year, she met with probably the most famous voice coach ever, Seth Riggs, and I believe it was 4 sessions with him & it was he who taught how to sing using her mixed voice, and now you will often hear her referred to as the ‘queen of mix’. This amazing lady just looks at life in a different way to the majority of us, which explains prob why she’s not the world famous diva her amazing voice warrants & why she’s refused to sign to one of the big record companies that try to sign her. Her whole reason for singing is to use her voice to help comfort those that need it, she’s not interested at all in the material things that a lucrative record deal etc could give her, plus she doesn’t need more & more work because her body just wouldn’t be able to cope physically because of her ongoing health problems she has. I would imagine that it is going to be very hard for you not to just dive in to sohyangs performances & watch as many as you can as fast as you can but I’m sure I speak for many who so want to go on your sohyang journey with you because having been there, you can never re-experience what you felt like when first heard sohyang or what each performance since then does to you, however, I can assure you that watching other people take their first steps on the sohyang train is a good substitute, I know that it brings me joy. So please do as many sohyang reactions as you can & as often as you can because you can never hear or see ‘too much’ sohyang. I have seen performances like ‘bridge over troubled water’ easily more than 200 times over the years, maybe more, and I never get tired of hearing it, it still gives me the chills in the same places that it did when I first heard it, it’s uncanny!!
Sohyang is amazing and among the top singers but I fell in love with her best friend Cho Yong Jin aka ALi who does more than one genre and style of singing. She introduced me to the traditional and very popular genre of Trot and now it is all I listen to, many singers of years past have been brought back to life as a younger generation has filled those shoes with great passion of the genre my all-time favorite new singer in the Trot world is Jung Seo Joo.
Here we have a like Disney Princess who meets Celtic music and together they're takling us to church! A side note she was actually struggling with Pnemonia at this performance yet she killed it. She didn't wanna let the production down although it came with a price. She couldn't perform a sing for quite some time afterwords. Sorry to spam, but since you after good singers of the more real variety I will suggest John Farnham. He is known as "The voice" and "Farnsey" here in Australia. For what ever reason he isn't well known in the US but he's a legend here. We are talking somebody who has been singing for over 50 years. Also he just got over jaw cancer, what is it with great singers and cancer. I will suggest him singing "Help" in 1989 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It's a cover of the Beatles song, but again re-imaged. He had permission from John Lennon to sing it this way with JL saying that this is what they wanted for the song but the label wanted it to be pop so they never sang it this way. It's really special and I think you will love it.
So hear me out. I landed on her watching reactions and got stuck. I never even usually watch this one. You can watch 10 others of hers, that will utterly blow your socks off and STILL just have no idea yet. I don't think this one is in my top ten lol. She does a cover that then sets the standard for the top possibility of that song. Over and over. Just try Lean On Me...I Have Nothing....Bridge Over Troubled Water. They smoke this one. And these are nothing. Heck the best first reaction would be Arirang Alone. There's others. But then there's like almost 10 in the masked singer that are just otherworldly. If you only do one song at a time you'll never scratch the surface. Throga did several and then did a 90 minute live and they are still missing some absolutely epic ones.

SoHyang had been under a doctors care for pneumonia. He advised against her performance but she is just incredible. And yes, she did the arrangement. Prost !
This phenomenal lady came to the stage for this song, from hospital bed and returned there afterwards, recovering from pneumonia. Doctor's orders was to not even speak. She sang this song with the impression that this was her last time on stage singing. She stopped for around 2 years and this particular arrangement of hers was one of the factors that she returned back to us, performing again.

No matter what Sohyang sings, she injects life into you. She is the most extraordinary woman I know of. You can tie your behind to a piano and it will prove futile because Sohyang's performance will literally suck you into the emotion and power she exudes, piano and all! She is the most magical singer I have come across in my entire six and one half decades on this planet. Sohyang is a once in a lifetime singer.
The guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The television program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that after hearing her version "the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up" and it was "amazing" and "outstanding!" Not hard to see why, eh?
The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and rendition, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Sohyang had to _really_ pull back on concerts after this appearance, and thought it might actually be the last one of her singing career due to the serious pneumonia. Thus the Irish embassy had a difficult time finding Sohyang but they did finally get a hold of her and delivered Mr. Graham's message.
Other than this one performance, we know of only two other times Sohyang has performed this rendition of "You Raise Me Up," both in 2018. When she changes key there a couple of times near the end of the song and belts those high notes so powerfully, you expect her to actually lift off the stage and go into orbit! Yes, Sohyang is famous for throwing in everything and leaving it all on the stage--including the kitchen sink!

This Master Class performance from the PHENOMENAL So Hyang is even more impressive because she IS NOT well here. Some time prior to this event, she was released from the hospital, still recovering from her most recent bout with severe pneumonia (eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, around the same time, she was experiencing vocal cord issues and believed her singing career was over. In an interview, she said that God humbled her because she couldn't understand how this was happening to her. So Hyang wanted to perform one last time. After this event, she disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. She returned in 2020.
In 2024, at 46 years old, not only is she aging in reverse, she sounds better than ever before, if that's even possible.
Her vocal range is still RIDICULOUS, and her breath control remains INSANE.
We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek!

She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.

• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

So Hyang is a gift from God to us. Her singing will literally make you feel things like goosebumps and tears. You mentioned about her performing sick. If you do a closeup you can see her tongue was white which is a sign of a someone that is not 100% plus if you know So Hyang like we do, you can tell by her face she was not feeling well.

So the doctor did and SoHyang says she is grateful for that decision and to God for hurting the marriage know she would have herself checked out ! Because of the surgery or her travel she caught Hepatitis and in a about a 2 1/2 year period she got very sick with pneumonia 8 times and almost gave up singing because she was letting down so many people
When god saved her she promised to use her voice to comfort his Lambs! I absolutely loved your reaction. I couldn't help but subscribe! Well, now you've heard So Hyang after coming from the hospital after having pneumonia, you will really dig some of her other stuff. I maintain that she is not only the best female singer we have on earth now but her live performances are mind boggling, maybe the best of all time for a soloist female singer. You have to see her 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' from KBS K-Pop TV (the one with about 10M views). It is like nothing you have ever heard before, I promise. It really is far more spectacular than this little ditty. Her 'I Have Nothing' from the 2015 DMC Festival is the best, to me, that that particular song has ever been sung live, and, yes, I love Whitney as well. Her Korean-English song 'Everyone' is a masterclass in vocals, and a marathon. For softer stuff, 'Misty' (old jazz standard) from the Begin Again Concert and 'Angel' (from a recent busking tour in Spain -- her as a blonde, again like here only more so). Like you said near the end 'We don't have that anymore!' So true, except with So Hyang. Also, her cover of Lady Gaga's 'I'll Never Love Again' while on the same tour is so remarkable given it is on a street with minimal instrumental backing up. She can sit at any table with Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lara, or anyone and talk shop. I like to say that perfect pitch follows So Hyang around so it can learn from her. Great reaction, thanks! As a long time sohyang fan, I have to admit that although this is still an amazing performance, I think this isn’t as pristine as most of her other performances, which is understandable as she was advised by the doctors looking after her not to sing as she was still recovering from her latest bout of pneumonia. Anyone familiar with Sohyang would probably agree that she looks very pale & tired & like she’s lost weight from her face.
Not only is she an amazing vocalist but she is also responsible for her own arrangements.
I think a performance that is a must for you is her performance of ‘arirang alone’ from the ‘immortal songs’ series ( it’s the performance that has the most views). I just know you would love it, having said that, any musician with an in-depth knowledge of music can’t help but be impressed, even if it’s just from a technical point of view.
You just mentioned you love Whitney, so I urge you to check out a couple of performances that are very different.
Firstly her performance of ‘I have nothing’ from the DMC festival, a performance that led David Foster, the songs writer,to go to Korea to seek her out & perform with her.
And secondly, a low key performance done during the pandemic to a small audience of essential workers of ‘I will always love you’, like you’ve never heard it before.
I believe that a lot of people, myself included, first experience of this amazing woman is her performance of ‘bridge over troubled water’ from the ‘immortal songs’ series and I know that some really great sohyang fans are probably right this very moment composing you lists of her performances, along with the links, please use them.
She can literally sing any genre, rock, pop, blues/jazz ( check out her performance of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’, again done during the pandemic) she can rap, obviously the big power ballads but her heart is with gospel music & elements of gospel can often be heard in her arrangement of songs that aren’t usually associated with the gospel genre in their original form.
She is self taught, apart from when she spent some time the very famous voice coach Seth Riggs when on vacation in the US, it was he who taught her how to sing in her mixed voice & sohyang is widely known as the ‘queen of mix’.
You should check out her back story & the continuous health problem she has had to live with since beating cancer in her early 20’s,which will also go some way to explaining why she isn’t the world famous diva her voice surely merits. She actually chooses not to follow the path of fame & fortune and has turned down all of the world’s biggest record companies who have tried to sign her.
She is the most beautiful human being, both inside & out. I am so excited for you that have taken your 1st step into the amazing world of sohyang & i know that there are so many more performances that are more impressive than this, although I appreciate that ultimately it comes down to personal taste. I am also happy that someone that obviously knows what they’re talking about when it comes to music, like yourself,has discovered sohyang & can point out all that is good about her amazing vocals & musicality in general in your reactions etc, because believe it or not, there are people out there who will try & have you believe that she can’t sing & that she can only scream. She is the essence of joy. I don't know if the fans have told you this, but she designs the musical arrangement, chorus, orchestra, and staging for all of her live performances. So, yes, you are seeing every bit of her enormous talent in all of these performances.

Her condition was so bad due to severe pneumonia that the doctor tried to dissuade her from performing, but she did her best to keep her promise, and after this performance, she did not sing in official schedules such as broadcasts for about two years. Nevertheless, many people were moved and comforted and encouraged. As time passed, she came back and told people that she was dissatisfied with her singing in the worst condition, but she was more moved by the audience, so she gained courage and strength.
She always touchs my heart and makes me cry. I love her.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. :) I love this version, it's the only time that she sang this arrangement that is easily found. She was getting over a bout of pneumonia here too. Sohyang is a cancer survivor who struggled with her health for many years. She is the best female singer alive today. Not well known because she remains an independent artist due to her health and her faith, so no large label backing.
Sohyang is well loved and respected, but nothing beats the first time hearing her. :)

Sohyang disappeared for about 18 months after this to try and get herself well as she had been having so many bouts of pneumonia. This is due to her having hepatitis from a blood transfusion she got while undergoing surgery for tumors. She had early stage ovarian cancer diagnosed right after she got married when she was about 21. Her health struggles have been a very long ongoing battle.
This is why we like to be sure reactors get the best videos. This one is special however as it's the only time she did this arrangement, or at least one that can be found.

It's not just me who regrets that she, who could have become a global star, ultimately gave up contracts with major foreign companies just for religious reason, tearfully setting aside her greed as a humble human. Did we not witness her representing what arrangement and singing truly are with just this one song? It is an arrangement and singing technique that will remain in the history of global popular music. She left a masterpiece that even other singers, including herself now, cannot cover. Her discography, of course, is filled with iconic performances that showcase her extraordinary talent for arrangement and stagecraft, making them nearly impossible for others to replicate easily. It is an incredibly magnificent song where all musical and non-musical elements on stage perfectly blend, providing listening pleasure. If you know of one of the Korean instrument Danso, I must acknowledge your background. Although it was introduced on screen as an Irish flute, don't woodwind instruments of that type usually have similar tones? I'm not sure. Anyway, I must warn you that there are numerous reactors who struggle with broadcast copyrights and give up reacting to her. lol. Typically, the first song that introduces her world of music is the most important, and this song wouldn't be a bad choice for that purpose. If you make a wrong introduction or if someone has a lot of prejudices like you might have, they might dismiss her or give up before truly appreciating her. She is one of the few singers who can sing any song we want to hear with the highest quality. I think the tone of a singer's voice accounts for about 2/3 of their ability. I mean, If you dislike the tone, no matter how excellent the technique and emotion are, you wouldn't listen. As someone who is familiar with classical music, I believe she possesses super tone, technique, and emotion, and she is a wonderful person with admirable character and even courage as well. I seriously doubt if there is a more perfect singer in the world. I hope you continue to take good care of her in the channel and wish for the prosperity of your one. Finally, true fans and reactors of hers know well that her Korean songs are more precious. If you stop at covering foreign songs, you are not a fan.😊
That isn't exactly the full picture. The main reason she has not made the ultimate effort for world wide exposure is her health issues and her inability to go on tour which would be stressful for her well being..

No one appreciates So Hyang more than musicians do, because they understand what they're listening to, and it's not _just_ beauty they're hearing, it's astounding _world-class_ _talent_ and musicianship! So Hyang sings in the center of the pitch better than anyone I've ever heard. In my opinion, there are two aspects of this performance which indicate So Hyang is not completely well: 1) she goes into her falsetto to hit a high note toward the end of the song which she would normally belt with no problems, and 2) she doesn't hold the last note of the song very long, whereas she would normally hold it for twice as long. Miraculously, the tone of her voice and pitch as are perfect as always. She is truly an angel and a blessing!!
Next up should be _Arirang Alone_ followed by _Bridge Over Troubled Water_. I would suggest waiting a while before reacting to _Everyone_ (and make sure you listen to the version *with subtitles*). Great reaction! Looking forward to more So Hyang reactions from you!
Not only is she likely the best singer in the world but what is really special is the emotion she invokes. No other singer can consistently bring tears to my eyes.
I recommend 'Angel' that she sang in front of the Spanish cathedral.

Sohyang released this year a great new Whitney Houston style song "Til You Love Me Again" written by her and her two regular collaborators (CPK). KBS kpop channel has a high quality live outdoor performance. There are excellent videos of her" "I Have Nothing" and "I Will Always Love You" covers. She also has sung these songs with David Foster who composed/arranged them.
Crazy isn’t it. Her influences were all the divas. Whitney, Mariah,Celine and Aretha. She’s mentioned this in interviews. Her cover of “bridge over troubled water” is epic as well as Whitney’s “I have nothing”

Sohyang has been and is still primarily a gospel singer. She sings to bring comfort to others. Two other Korean vocalist you should know would be Song Sohee who sings in a very traditional way with unmatched skill. The other is HYNN who is likely the best ballad singer I've heard.
Sohyang is not one of my favorites singer but my only favorite singer. You must see a lot of her songs like: Bridge Over Troubled Water, I have Nothing, oh Holy Night, Misty, Amazing Grace…. Many many more. I love your reaction.

As I’m sure you’ll find out soon, if not already, that sohyang probably sings from a place that many would not understand because we are so lucky to have this wonderful human being with us at all as she discovered she had ovarian cancer in her early 20’s & although she beat it, because of the treatment she was left unable to have children of her own. She also contracted hepatitis from a blood transfusion. She has repeated bouts of pneumonia, an absolute disaster for singers as it affects the lungs.
Also, contrary to what many think, why wouldn’t you?!!!, she has had no formal training except for when on a vacation in the US one year, she met with probably the most famous voice coach ever, Seth Riggs, and I believe it was 4 sessions with him & it was he who taught how to sing using her mixed voice, and now you will often hear her referred to as the ‘queen of mix’.
This amazing lady just looks at life in a different way to the majority of us, which explains prob why she’s not the world famous diva her amazing voice warrants & why she’s refused to sign to one of the big record companies that try to sign her.
Her whole reason for singing is to use her voice to help comfort those that need it, she’s not interested at all in the material things that a lucrative record deal etc could give her, plus she doesn’t need more & more work because her body just wouldn’t be able to cope physically because of her ongoing health problems she has.
I would imagine that it is going to be very hard for you not to just dive in to sohyangs performances & watch as many as you can as fast as you can but I’m sure I speak for many who so want to go on your sohyang journey with you because having been there, you can never re-experience what you felt like when first heard sohyang or what each performance since then does to you, however, I can assure you that watching other people take their first steps on the sohyang train is a good substitute, I know that it brings me joy.
So please do as many sohyang reactions as you can & as often as you can because you can never hear or see ‘too much’ sohyang. I have seen performances like ‘bridge over troubled water’ easily more than 200 times over the years, maybe more, and I never get tired of hearing it, it still gives me the chills in the same places that it did when I first heard it, it’s uncanny!!

Sohyang is amazing and among the top singers but I fell in love with her best friend Cho Yong Jin aka ALi who does more than one genre and style of singing. She introduced me to the traditional and very popular genre of Trot and now it is all I listen to, many singers of years past have been brought back to life as a younger generation has filled those shoes with great passion of the genre my all-time favorite new singer in the Trot world is Jung Seo Joo.
Here we have a like Disney Princess who meets Celtic music and together they're takling us to church! A side note she was actually struggling with Pnemonia at this performance yet she killed it. She didn't wanna let the production down although it came with a price. She couldn't perform a sing for quite some time afterwords. Yes she is inspired by Celine, Mariah, Whitney just like many many others are! Sohyang is a reabbit hole to discover and you should check out Everything, Upon This Rock, I Have Nothing to name a few.

Great reaction! She sings along with a violin in "Arirang Alone" from Immortal Songs 2. The original Arirang is a Korean folk song. She makes it her own, and I think you'll like it. Thank you for reacting to her! I subscribed for more.
Sorry to spam, but since you after good singers of the more real variety I will suggest John Farnham. He is known as "The voice" and "Farnsey" here in Australia. For what ever reason he isn't well known in the US but he's a legend here. We are talking somebody who has been singing for over 50 years. Also he just got over jaw cancer, what is it with great singers and cancer.
I will suggest him singing "Help" in 1989 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It's a cover of the Beatles song, but again re-imaged. He had permission from John Lennon to sing it this way with JL saying that this is what they wanted for the song but the label wanted it to be pop so they never sang it this way. It's really special and I think you will love it.

So hear me out. I landed on her watching reactions and got stuck. I never even usually watch this one. You can watch 10 others of hers, that will utterly blow your socks off and STILL just have no idea yet. I don't think this one is in my top ten lol.
She does a cover that then sets the standard for the top possibility of that song. Over and over. Just try Lean On Me...I Have Nothing....Bridge Over Troubled Water. They smoke this one. And these are nothing. Heck the best first reaction would be Arirang Alone. There's others. But then there's like almost 10 in the masked singer that are just otherworldly.
If you only do one song at a time you'll never scratch the surface. Throga did several and then did a 90 minute live and they are still missing some absolutely epic ones.
