These knives aren't 1000 years old, it's a click bait. He could have 1000 one-year-old knives but I see only 18. Meteorites on the other hand are millions if not billions of years old and they do make knives from them.

Да и оно стоит дешевле, чем стоило тогда, когда его изготовили. Цвайхандер 15 века можно купить за 800к. В отличном состоянии. Даже угол заточки будет виден. С документами. Почти произведение искусства. А тут... Фигня это, такие и у меня валяются. Вы переоцениваете историческую ценность. Как думаете, сколько стоит десять самых мелких монеток времён золотой орды средней степени сохранности? 500 рублей. Ранне-византийские фибулы можно найти и за 2000 рублей. Простые колечки с камнем стоят в районе 1000.

Seen other master smiths that do the same. It's a skill I wish I'd learned. My metalwork teacher at school was a complete arsehole. Every year did the same projects. Spade scraper, onion hoe etc. We weren't allowed anywhere near the furnace.

Honestly, has anyone ever heard or seen anything like this involving ancient metals? What a clever idea! I have a thing for metals since childhood. I'm not exceptionally academic at it --- just love metals and doing things with it. This video has an interesting conflict of interest being that you have to sacrifice residual ancient historical relics to create a modern implement bearing an ancient metallic recipe composition formulation of said relics. That's mindbogglingly scrumptious!

They're too rusted out and too insignificant to be an exhibit in a local museum. So the way it turned out probably is the best outcome for that piece of history.
Well, according to the google, iron was being used (in the middle east) as early as 1500 bc, so, its possible.
You'll be surprised how common those beat up old blades are; especially if they came from around Kiev.

At first i thought it's bad to destroy such ancient blades with a method that doesn't leave much to be seen about what it's originally made of, but really, it kinda does. And that knife now contains so much symbolism and evolution of blacksmithing tradition. Making it didn't destroy those knives, it gave them new life. And it looks damn awesome, so that's a plus.

For those who wonders, the pepper thing is actually a derivative tradition from an old trick against corrosion.
A part of the Capsicum annuum (peppers) paste actually affect the iron compounds within the steel during heating on a molecular level. It has been proven as "showing potential as an inexpensive environment friendly corrosion inhibitor for mild steel".
It's literally just a joke, in Ukrainian language "гострий" means both sharp and hot/spicy

It's a confusing title, but he means used 1000 knives in total and those knives were *each* one year old

@@blackmage665 Don't worry, these particular types of knife are not rare. There are probably millions of them out there to be found from the medieval. These kinds of little knives are the sort of thing most everybody, men and women, would have carried about with them. The tool was essential for a lot of little tasks that come up; and/or they ate with them (back then an eating knife and a spoon were the only utensils widely used at the table, and people were expected to provide their own).

I’m deff no expert but I’d guess there is more value in the remade knife, then the rotting blades. Not just monetarily either, it shows that even after this long, the metal was high quality enough to be used.

A totally creative and beautiful creation. It's a privilege to watch a master at work. So few have mastered so many techniques these days, and to me these are what true mastery of the craft is.
This is so different than the forgeing our ancestors did. So many power tools - electric grinders, electric/ hydraulic hammers, manufactured sand papers, etc.
Still nice to watch.

I wondered that myself when i started to watch his videos. The explanation was that it's some kind of pum, in which the word for sharp in russian is equivalent to spicy. So he adds pepper to the canister in order for it to become "spicy". You see him doing it in all of the videos

Lol same here, I couldn't resist when I saw how nice the blue color is. Have you tried adding citric acid to change the color purple? Both colors are very pretty, though I don't like the taste with citric acid. Honey works pretty good to sweeten it (kinda needs it IMHO), the flavors pair well.
@@TheExplosiveGuy I haven't tried citric acid. I have tried lemon, but didn't really notice a color change. I made a batch of iced tea with it and it looked great, but the flavor was extremely subtle. I tried adding more flowers, but that gave it a bit of a sage brush taste. I want to try honey, but I keep forgetting to pick some up when I'm at the store.
I guess I didn't try lemon after all, as I just brewed up a cup and the lemon immediately turned it purple. Made it taste way better as well.

The scale that falls off doesn't have much mass so it should be cooled off by the anvil pretty quick

I would love to watch this same video with a running narration of every step. Fascinating stuff! When I was a kid my dad had a machine shop I had access to. I had all this gear but just didn’t know what to do with it. Now I know but don’t have the gear.
Adding a narration, verbal or subtitles, would narrow his audience to just those language speakers.
