  • Our planet has seen its climate fluctuate significantly across billions of years, but the past 100 years has seen an unprecedented spike in Earth's temperature. Dr. Paul Sutter returns to Ars Technica to break down the factors behind our changing climate, where we go from here, and what there's still time left to influence.

    Why do you say that the greenhouse gas connection was discovered in the 1980s when the heat trapping properties of greenhouse gases has been known since the late 1800s and the idea that these gases could warm the entire planet was theorized all the way back in the 1920s?

    It's not just from the sun and green house gases. The oil that we pulled out of the ground dissipated the heat that comes from the core. Why isn't that being addressed. We are cooking from both sides.

    The funny thing is that you believe there could be a consensus about this.
    There won't be, poor in developing countries want the same lifestyle we have.
    It requires energy and produces carbon emissions.

    You ask the question: "is it too late to do anything about climate change?"
    Yes, it really IS too late. For centuries the rich of the world have kept the poor very poor. So poor in fact that they can hardly afford to live. And that's still going on today. So no matter what the rich countries of the world would like others to do, the future of the planet is absolutely not in the hands of the rich. It's firmly in the hands of the poor.
    And with the poor outweighing the rich five to one - at the behest of rich countries - they choose to not starve (instead of buying their Teslas and other electric cars which the rich have made totally inaccessible to them) and will most definitely be burning fossil fuels for many more centuries to come.
    Get ready to get rather hot.

    You look at some of these comments and realize the human race is doomed.

    • @wolfejar
      @wolfejar ปีที่แล้ว

      Capitalism and the survival for humanity are in direct conflict with each other. Humanity has a choice of other obtaining temporary wealth or we choose the health and the survival of humanity not to mention other animals. Humans cant have both. We live on a planet of finite resources but Capitalism requires unlimited growth while consuming resources. This party is coming to an end, the punch bowl is going dry.
      I used to have hope but now I don't. Since the 2015 Paris climate agreement we have not hit a single one of our benchmarks. IPCC has said in the past couple of years time is running out.
      Now i just accept humans has maybe 20-25 "good years" left before food and water becomes a major problem.

  • @hofnaerrchen
    @hofnaerrchen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is very strongly connected to the growth of human population and the fact technology and wealth developped - human did not.... 1900 there were 1.26 billion people, today it's almost 8 billion and now guess what the problem really is... the current lifestyle would work if there were less people but modern lifestyle/wealth is highly aspired - something nobody can be condemned for - but with this comes a responsibility not to reproduce like we have done for the last 100 years... at least if you want your children to have a life worth living. I bet we will see more wars, drought and famines in the years to come. Congrats!

    • @HellGamingPlus
      @HellGamingPlus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oldineamiller9007 if anything 97% of studies showing statistical man-made climate change is arguably more damning than 97% of scientists, because that means its consensus on a meta-analytical level which in the scientific method is way more powerful than the thoughts of the individual. The scientific method specifically is designed to rule out subjectivity through using all the studies as evidence to find objectivity, so if that 97% is through studies and not individuals then actually that's way more damning proof that man-made climate change is real.... which it is :)

      Make a honest poll and among the climate scientists only and you will find out.
