Very good idea. Rings are very hard to do.

There's way too much to do in this process. A $50 HP inkjet printer using #60, 61, or 65 ink would solve 97% of your problems.

What material do you print on?

@@alastairduncan4702 , I use Pictorico Premium overhead projector film. It's designed to work with inkjet printers. It only has one printable side with emulsion on it. Lick your thumb and first finger a little and pinch one corner. The side that sticks to your finger is the printable side. Inkjet printers can make far more detailed transfers than a laser printer.
Not all inkjet printers make good transfers though, just like not all laser printers work for transfers. Any HP inket using #60, 61, or 65 ink will work. Those inks are proven to work.

Thanks for the information Chuck, I've seen that a number of engravers use this method on engraverscafe and it looks interesting. The problem I have with it I think is that its great for engravings where it has a fairly flat surface and there is somewhere to tape the transparency to or hold it onto. The ring is a lot harder to hold it in place while transferring the image around the ring. Its a problem for me because I don't have the skill to draw the design directly on to the ring as many professional engravers do and I don't do enough engraving to learn, my drawing skill have always been pretty poor. I do agree that the method I've described is an edge case and most of the design transfer problems can be solved using your method. I will dig out my inkjet machines give them a clean and give it a try. Thanks

@@alastairduncan4702, that's also a simple problem to solve. Tape your transfer to the ring. I do rings in sections, so the transfer never gets smeared or dirty. You can put "tic" marks along the edges of your transfer to easily line it up for the next section.

@@alastairduncan4702, my drawing skills suck. I use Adobe Illustrator and Autodesk Sketchbook.for designing. Inkscape is free software very much like Illustrator. Scan an image in of what you're going to engrave, and you can use the spiral tool to make perfect scrolls every time. With your image scanned in, you can size your scrolls perfectly, and make "tic" marks on the edges of the transfer to line it up if you do it in sections. I use a cheap inside ring holder to hold the ring for applying transfers and engraving it. There's inside ring holders with different sized collets on Aliexpress for around $15. If you don't have a ring holder, get one. It will really help.
