Laser image transfer to metal for jewellery and engraving

  • This is a video about how to transfer an image from a computer onto the surface of a flat or cylindrical metal object. It is particularly useful for jewellery, silver and goldsmithing as well as engraving. It is not the only way of doing this but it suits me and it has been adapted from other methods that you may find on youtube. Shaun Hughes' video started me off looking into how I could do this. The materials that I use are:
Zinsser B.I.N - primer paint, this is shellack based so can be cleaned up with methylated spirits/alcohol.
Silicone coated baking parchment, the transparent kind for ease of placement of the image on the metal
Spray glue, I use 3M spray mount but there should be no reason why other spray glues will not work.
Laser printer, I use a HP laserjet pro m201 dw but there is no reason why this should not work on other models

Great idea. I never thought of spray gluing it to another piece of paper.

Shadowman9 No I don't think so. What you need for etching is a transparency with the required pattern, then spray the item to be etched with photoresist. Place the transparency in close contact with the item and expose with UV light. Wash away the unexposed photoresist and then etch. This is very similar to how circuit board s are made. Something like this th-cam.com/video/NntLi4KcLlI/w-d-xo.html it is suitable for flat surfaces or curves in one plane.

I wonder if hair spray will work.

I've never tried hairspray but I've seen that others have used it successfully. It would need some tackyness for the laser print to stick to.

Why is toner erased with your finger?

    • @alastairduncan4702

The baking parchment is coated with a thin layer of silicone so that the toner does not stick to the parchment. This enables the toner to be transferred. If the toner stuck to the parchment then it could not be transferred to the painted/lacquered metal. Once the toner has been transferred, then it is heated so that the toner is melted and well bonded to the paint/lacquer, then it won't be erased.

That's a transfer to paint. How about a transfer to bare metal?
