that can have its uses since diagonal cutting tends to be good (and particularly if you want to cut flat across the grain in a mortise, where the regular chisel would have its edge parallel to the fibers). but it would be a much more specialised tool and necessitate having left- and right-handed chisels, and even that would leave the cutting of the rear right angles of a lot of mortises and corners more difficult. so no, I'm pretty sure that the common chisel in russia isn't like that. that's one thing where european, asian, and american woodworking tools all agree with one another.
GETTING a chisel as sharp as a razor is one thing and there are many ways to achieve this (every male woodworker has a series of rectangular bald patches on his arm from testing razor sharp chisels). Whether one can maintain this sharpness depends on the quality of steel. This is good but there are already so many videos on achieving "scary" sharp edges and many viewers will be disappointed because they cannot achieve the same results on cheap chisels. What is needed are videos on SELECTING good chisels to begin with. When you buy cheap chisels, you'll never be short of something with which to prise open tins of paint. Research brands or buy old antique edge tools (even quality modern tool companies cannot afford to invest in the time to make their own steel these days). The sharpest chisels and plane irons I have were made around 1900 or earlier. They all get sharpened and honed the same way... but they're not all MADE the same way.
The wood block wearing down quicker than the chisel is going to interfere with the process - could stick a sacrificial thin sheet of metal onto the bottom of the block?
Darn that's just tooo easy to get it right! I'm sure glad their r guys like you around...Its quite simple to make it happen..Many thanks my good man... Bring some more common sense to all us guys...
The whole point of a chisel is to have a flat back to use as a support guide for paring etc. Honing just the front end will wear that part down and the back will no longer be flat, so while the chisel may be sharp, it will no longer be an accurate tool because the instant you have to raise the back of the chisel to get the edge to bite you're guessing
Dang good trick/tip! Of course NOW get this recommendation rather than sooner after buy one of those rolling chisel sharpening clamps!😂😂😂 Good thing to know if ever away from the shop without all of the gadgets. Thanks for posting.
For all the guy commenting…a hacksaw!?…different countries use different saws. That saw was the appropriate profile and tpi count to cut that wood that way.
First run it over a grinder wheel hollow out the bevel. Then buy a cheap chisel sharpener holder/roller. The square the edge and roll it until you have a good edge with a hollow on the blade.
All well and good, but at some point, the primary bevel will need to be “reset”, so a secondary bevel can be added later, if they so wished. At least this way, the user has the choice to do both.
2:35 Wrong - if you back off with the course stone you are just making work for yourself because you then have to grind out those coarse scratches. Wait and only back off with the finest stone, which is all you need for that job. Anyway, you don't need the guide in the first place, just learn to do it freehand and save yourself months of messing about over your working life. Title should be; 'How to sharpen .... if you can't be bothered to learn how to do it properly.'
The first thing I was taught was how to sharpen a chisel with no guides. I can shave with my chisels, and my work site colleagues prefer mine over theyre own. Just a little practice, and youll be supprised at how easy it is without making or buying guides.
I agree 100%. I would add that by relying on a guide you don't learn basic sharpening techniques such as microbevels and changing the bevel angle to prevent chipping or lowering it for higher performance. If you start out with a crutch you will never learn to run!
@@djpaintles very true. Essential skills. And once you know these sharpening skills' you have them for life's and they are very quick on a well maintained chisel.
Not a fan of flat sharpening, a quick pass on the grinder gives you a nice concave surface to sharpen. Less metal to remove and I do not need a jig to hold the chisel at the right angle while honing the edge on a stone.
Real way: few touches of the belt sander (dont blacken the tip) then run it over a fine stone, get a leather strop if you want to go sharper. Forget this jig. Using chizels since i was 12 and im 35 now. Thousands of doors fitted, thosands of joints made.
The chisel sharpening technique is so perfect, it's worth learning from your sharing

Same idea cept I use 600 3M wet sandpaper and honing oil! Works great when you put a full sheet of paper on a piece of glass.
I really like your idea. I’ll be making one myself, thank you 🙏
Very good ! Thank you very much
Wow, this is the best tutorial I've seen. Very simple device to put it together. Well done.
Thanks bro
It turned out to be an excellent sharpener, simple and reliable, well done by the author!

Well done! Very simple device to sharpen a cutting tool .
okay
Here in Russia, the working edge of the chisel is sharpened not at 90 degrees relative to the body of the chisel, but slightly obliquely.
ok man

Good idea , but won't the wood block eventually clog the sharpening stone surface.?
Thanks bro
my thought too
The wood block wearing down quicker than the chisel is going to interfere with the process - could stick a sacrificial thin sheet of metal onto the bottom of the block?
Nothing a little clean won't fix.
I saw a similar idea but it had wheels not just the block of wood

So, I think the honing of the back is, not to wear off steel, but to remove the small burr raised from honing the beveled edge. Just my opine!

First run it over a grinder wheel hollow out the bevel. Then buy a cheap chisel sharpener holder/roller. The square the edge and roll it until you have a good edge with a hollow on the blade.

Just flatten the back then put a secondary bevel on it and you have the same sharpness with out the extra effirt
All well and good, but at some point, the primary bevel will need to be “reset”, so a secondary bevel can be added later, if they so wished. At least this way, the user has the choice to do both.
You could add roller-bearings front and rear, to straddle the sharpening stone. This would prevent the block being worn away.
thanks bro

glass marbles (school)
4 holes
4-8 metal washers - 2 different internal diameters/ball
4 balls
4 large pierced metal washers + screws

Your block is only touching in the front. As a result, you're not sharpening evenly. You'll end up with a curved bevel.

A properly sharpened chisel has 2 bevels, not 1

Put more effort into reducing the thickness of the wood!
Why? As far as i can tell he needs it to offset the sanding action he will have from rubbing the block on the paper
Buy a chisel sharpening guide for a fiver and it will help you put the bevel on as well in less time than it takes to cut this contraption.
