I agree, what a load of rubbish and time, A good honing guide can be bought that takes quarter inch to two inch chisels plus some plane blades. also the man does not seem to know that you have two angles to a blade, the grinding angle then the sharpening angle. Total waste of time.
I'm not a joiner but I have enough skill to sharpen a chisel, otherwise I shouldn't be using one. What a "Heath Robinson" device you have knocked up here. Reminds me of my childhood watching Blue Peter. The only thing missing is the empty washing up liquid bottle.😁
My old dad was a superb chippy, he taught me with an oilstone and an old leather belt. You could have SHAVED with his chisels, like straight razors! He even sharpened his drills by hand, the skills that man had were amazing to me. I never mastered drills sadly.
My dad taught me the same. I just use a wetstone like in the video (but with a store bought chisel block instead of making it out of wood) and then scrape it off afterwards on a piece of leather. Much faster and less messy than using toothpaste and an old battery :)
Your dad sounds like a true craftsman! Those skills are incredible, especially sharpening drills by hand. Even though mastering drills is tough, it's great that you have those memories and skills passed down!
You don't need to use a battery to strop the chisel. Get a old leather belt and lay it on it's face. Then add the toothpaste or cleanser with water to the leather and pull the chisel edge across the leather. It looks like there is a double bevel on the chisel: an angled edge on both sides. While this is okay for rough work, it means more work being done for accurate use, compensating for the chisel wanting to move upward in the cut. The bottom of the chisel needs to be absolutely flat, hopefully with a little hollow area about 1cm from the tip.
I thought everyone knew about the two bevels on a chisel??? I knew it in shop class in 1964 and it has worked excellently for me since then through hundreds of chisels of various sizes......
She doesn’t mean an angle on one side and a different angle on the back 🙄. Traditionally chisels are sharpened at two angles but have a look at Paul Sellers style. He sharpens at one angle and works great 👍
Great video! I really appreciate the detailed instructions and the use of various tools to assist in sharpening the chisel. This may not be your area of expertise, but I value this creativity that can help with other tools as well. Thank you very much!
Merhaba.
Lots of criticsm from people who want to show how superior or clever they are. Good tip though for someone who isn't a cabinet maker or skilled carpenter and just wants a sharper chisel than what they currently have, and for that this vid is useful. Me - I use a Tormec circular whetstone running in water, to get the double edge, diamond paste and a leather strop.
You must remember that when you sharpen a chisel it must be at least 30% but the point of the chisel for at least 2mm shall be 25% that is the proper way so you can work on mortise & tenant joints that's what carpenters do Good luck from Ireland
"What an incredibly informative video! I never knew sharpening a chisel could be this easy and effective. The step-by-step instructions were clear and concise, making the process accessible to beginners like myself. Thank you for sharing such valuable DIY knowledge!"
Most sensible comment in the section. Spend pennies on a proper honing jig or 30 mins making a wooden honing jig that will load your oil stone with wood fibres, and limit the bearing surface when you remove the burr. I've freehanded from grinder to oil stone since my trainee days so never even owned a honing jig!
Honing angle then sharpening angel, take off the burr then finish with a leather strop. Learnt that over 40years ago, bu hand too or use a honing gauge
You don't sharpen the whole length of the bevel of the chisel as manufactured. You should sharpen it at a steeper angle to produce a second bevel that is only a sixteenth of an inch, or so, long. Sharpening then does not involve taking off anywhere near as much material from the blade.
Hell throw a couple of Crest White strips on it, too. 😂 Or skip a step and slather some of that toothpaste on the stone. Or better still do it free hand much quicker. Nuff said !!
A wood chisel has two blade angles, usually 30 and 25 degrees, better achieved with a proper sharpening guide and an oil stone, whetstones are more suited to penknives and bush craft knives, precision tools such as a chisel should not be abused in this manner, the battery is a hook gimmick, how many of the views were obtained on here by people wondering what' that about? well nothing, nada no real purpose at all.
They advise you not to take the covering from the batteries because of chemical leakage and possibility of causing a fire which lithium is well known for.
Alternatively, buy a little gadget that adjusts to various sizes (widths) of chisel, and provided the correct angle. It's on wheels so moves easily on the whetstone.
Cabinet maker here; this is a load of bollocks. Get a honing guide, a strop, and some honing paste. Ignore this cobblers.

Lot of effort to sharpen a tool, just learn how to use a whet stone properly and u will get a sharp chisel every time..
You only need to craft it once, the next grinding takes less than 1 minute
@@creationholic101 But presumably one is needed for every chisel!

Every chisel and plane iron should have two angles on the cutting edge unless I have been doing it wrong for 60 years as a joiner
160. Or 40. According to the people perspective.
On a wood chisel, one side is flat, the other side has an angle. Always, everywhere.
That's not entirely true. You can add a secondary micro bevel to make touching honing easier. @@hixyz19999
A chisel is NEVER sharpened with two angles. Why do you think the back is flat. It is not a knife.
She doesn’t mean an angle on one side and a different angle on the back 🙄. Traditionally chisels are sharpened at two angles but have a look at Paul Sellers style. He sharpens at one angle and works great 👍
A minty fresh chisel is the cornerstone of every woodworker's 'shop!
Absolutely! Keeping tools in top shape is key to great woodworking.
I don't know why I am even watching this, I don't own a chisel.
It's all about curiosity! You never know when it might come in handy!

Now the stone will develop a hollow from only using half its length due to the wooden block. Proper use of a stone is to use its entire length

It looks difficult if you think it's a one-time use, but with many subsequent uses, you'll see it's very effective and quick.
Try using all of the saw blade. Save a lot of effort and steel by using a second bevel for a cutting edge. Love the wedge device.

Yup. Been using the Veritas one for years. AND, it is adjustable for the bevels of ALL my many chisels.
First you need to flatten the face of the chisel then work the bevels😢 and the wood is destroying your water stone

Not only will this clog up your stone, the water will cause the wood to swell lifting the edge of the chisel off of the stone.
