Almost a year later and I finally have one of these beauties in my rig, performs very well. I prefer the understated design without too many RGB lights splattered all over it, but that's just my personal opinion . Thanks to this review I chose the 3080 over the 3090. Cheers TTL
this is a card that I want I'm still waiting hopefully before too long I can get one I have a Asus strix 1080 gt oc . I feel like it would be a great upgrade I didn't bother with the 20 series
Just got mine after a 10 month pre-order waiting list here in Australia. The first card got cancelled and the v2 cost me a little extra but if it's fixed anything that I haven't yet experienced then it's money well spent. Great review, cheers m8.

Nice review Tom. I do agree with you regardint the aesthetics department. Yes, it was time for the Strix lineup refresh and they have done a good job with it. When the 20GB VRAM models are available, it will be a tough decision between the TUF and the STRIX.
To be honest. I started watching tiny Tim right from the beginning of his channel. Somehow, I got drawn away to channels like gn and jayztwocents etc. But, not because I thought any less of Tim. Nice finally seeing reviews for that elusive card that I'm hoping to get (in Canada). Bonus for being in a 500D, got the 500D SE with dominator rgb plats as well. so nice preview! The rog eye on the backplate is a triangular plate addon that should have been in the box which also covers the visible connector. I love the ''safer'' aesthetics and will match great with the x570 E-gaming. To me that slanted slotted line is elegant and stylish compared to most others. That iCue integration is a notable factor for preferring the strix.
I agree about the aesthetics. I own an older ROG Matrix 980 and believe it to look superior to the new STRIX. But at the end of the day, it's the performance that matters. Cheers. ✌🏻

The rgb on this card is garbage. An rgb strip across the front is just plain lazy. No rgb branding? What happened to the rog eye or republic of gamers rgb logos? Top of the card rgb? I personally dont care for vertically mounted setups. But the people that use the vertical gpus get no rgb whatsoever. They screwed.
@U are My submissive toy i got mines september 30 off newegg for 749. The gigabyte gaming oc 3080. Its amazing how fast it is i love it. Im sure big navi will be great but im banking on dlss becoming huge. The biggest thing I've noticed is the temps. It never goes above 66 c under full load at 4k thats crazy to me, its really not that audible as well.

Fantastic review. And can I just say that what actually blew me away here was finding out that my 500D case can support a 360 on the top! The manual more or less says the top only supports 2x 280 fans or 2x 240 fans, so I assumed it couldn't (despite always feeling like it had the space). I'll be picking up that H150i today.
Great review you did there Tom! But you missed a couple of details worth mentioning. Given the new high power requirement of these new GPU's ASUS provided diagnostics LED's where the power sockets are. So if the PSU can not provide enough clean power you will get a red warning light informing you of this. Very handy function. Another thing ASUS did here that is a bit naughty actually is they now offer you a way to remove the Geforce RTX branding on the side of the card. Nvidia requires board partners to have it there but now ASUS offers a way to remove it by simply unscrew 2 screws and voila the plate can be removed for a cleaner look! 😁 I agree that the RGB especially for us that like a vertically mounted GPU is a bit lame on this card! I am a sucker for RGB! 😋😁

What's with the huge disparity in the Control benchmarks between the 3080 FE and the AIB cards? I know that the developers updated to DLSS 2.1, which supposedly leverages Ampere's architecture more efficiently, after the 3080 FE reviews went out. Did DLSS 2.1 really provide a 30+ fps uplift?! If so, that's insane and why is no one talking about it?
Nice review, I’ve seen stock has started to arrive in the uk, Overclockers has shipped some out over the last few days. Hope they get a lot more soon. I have to say though it does seem like there are only a few frames in it over the FE and I prefer how the FE looks too.
I have one of these on pre-order. It may arrive next year, who knows?! Anyway it'll form the core of a new Ryzen 5000 build in a Corsair 680X case. I know this case isn't everyone's cup of tea (mmm, tea), but I really like it. Anyway, I'm torn between grabbing a CableMods vertical mounting kit and setting the card back in the case where airflow should be OK. This would mean sacrificing PCIe Gen 4 for Gen 3 due to the cable, but I understand that's not too much of a deal-breaker at the moment. The other option is just to mount it normally as you've done here, which still looks really, really nice. Which route would you go, and if you went for conventional mounting, would you recommend an anti-sag device, and if so, which one? Thanks for this and all your other great videos :-)
Hey there! Nice review, even more because I managed to get my hands on this ROG, and I'm glad about it. I have only one little issue with this card (minor aesthetic issue). I do use iCue for my mouse and keyboard, and RGB Fusion for my Aorus RAM (my watercooling is taken care with a separate remote control). But now, my RBG GPU's front plate is no longer working. I have done some intense research on the internet, but no solution has given me entire satisfaction (uninstalling iCue isnt an option, I do need it). I know that Aura and iCue have synchro problems when they work together, but do you eventually know if there is something I can do about this ? Nvidially yours, A new subscriber.

I really like the updated design of the Strix. It's not super offensive or really 'in your face' like some other cards. It's ultimately subjective, of course, but the backplate is clean and I like how you can swap out part of the plate for the ROG logo, if you want that something with a little more flair.
There is a piece that comes in the box that you can place on the top backplate near the far right. It’s got an adhesive stick so it stays. Very subtle though.

Im planning to buy one got asus mobo so for RGB armoury crate and for controlling other stuff like fans gaming mode or perf mode that gpu tweaker? And what mode u recommend to keep it gaming? I also use msi afterburner where i gave my fan curve for my gpu well now for my Gtx 1070 gaming x since i dont have msi board afterburner is great
@@ggzii Pretty sure the production is very low to avoid flooding the market with cards who may or may not become obsolete very soon and need to be replaced with the "more ram" versions. The official "we can't produce more" is all about not pissing off the consumer by revealing they are waiting to see what amd's doing.
if you still have this on hand can you try doing a deshroud for the SFF community who are dying to know the dimensions without the shroud/fans and possibly any other plastic pieces that come off easily?

The 30 series card launch is the first time in history that a manufacturer let reviewers test the cards 3 month prior to the launch. This is also the first time that a few people have been able to beta test the cards by paying a premium or using a robot to enter the lottery.
What I really want to know is how to power it?! I'm sure most GPUs don't have 3 6-pins? I'm buying one of these shortly and that's the only thing that concerns me
I know why there are no 3080 and 3090 availiable, all are with the youtubers. ^^ Im not interessted in those Ampere cards at all, as Nvidia are (bad word). Im happily waiting for Big Navi.

I mean the fact that OCUK is still offering preorder and can't deliver cards - so many people cancel orders after next gen consol un radeon 6000 presentation. Holy crap, that thing is huge. Nice looking card. Looks what I would've expected EVGA to do, but they took the butt-ugly route this generation. Still waiting for EK to announce what cards they'll have waterblocks for. They have done Strix cards in the past.
I can almost guarantee with 100% certainty that EK will have a waterblock for this. Strix are the only cards I buy and EK has always had a block for them.

Holy crap didn't notice the Asus graphics on the metal covers when I saw other reviews. That's really neat.
Just a heads up - the eye comes with the consumer version of the card, you have the choice of gluing it to your GPU or not.

Another awesome review TTL and i totally agree with the design. Although i love the metal work on the front, still vertical. The strip is very , Meh....
I really like the updated design of the Strix. It's not super offensive or really 'in your face' like some other cards. It's ultimately subjective, of course, but the backplate is clean and I like how you can swap out part of the plate for the ROG logo, if you want that something with a little more flair.
I have the same opinion about the looks, it's just not Asus Strix without the ROG eye. I hope they add it to later models.
There is a piece that comes in the box that you can place on the top backplate near the far right. It’s got an adhesive stick so it stays. Very subtle though.
I'm not sure if these behemoths even fit the oxford definition for 'card' anymore. Maybe 20 years ago. These modern 'cards' are too chonky.

Im planning to buy one got asus mobo so for RGB armoury crate and for controlling other stuff like fans gaming mode or perf mode that gpu tweaker? And what mode u recommend to keep it gaming? I also use msi afterburner where i gave my fan curve for my gpu well now for my Gtx 1070 gaming x since i dont have msi board afterburner is great

@@ggzii Pretty sure the production is very low to avoid flooding the market with cards who may or may not become obsolete very soon and need to be replaced with the "more ram" versions.
The official "we can't produce more" is all about not pissing off the consumer by revealing they are waiting to see what amd's doing.

if you still have this on hand can you try doing a deshroud for the SFF community who are dying to know the dimensions without the shroud/fans and possibly any other plastic pieces that come off easily?
Lets hope they made this a bit understated because they are saving the proper ROG design for the 20GB version ;)
Does this version of the card come over clocked? Or is the OC in the name meaning it’s easier to overclock with msi afterburner?

The 30 series card launch is the first time in history that a manufacturer let reviewers test the cards 3 month prior to the launch. This is also the first time that a few people have been able to beta test the cards by paying a premium or using a robot to enter the lottery.
What I really want to know is how to power it?! I'm sure most GPUs don't have 3 6-pins? I'm buying one of these shortly and that's the only thing that concerns me
I know why there are no 3080 and 3090 availiable, all are with the youtubers. ^^ Im not interessted in those Ampere cards at all, as Nvidia are (bad word). Im happily waiting for Big Navi.

Can you please adrress 3080 situation in UK. I mean the fact that OCUK is still offering preorder and can't deliver cards - so many people cancel orders after next gen consol un radeon 6000 presentation. Even I cancel my preorder, but I'm very angry to OCUK that they doing preorder and that they failed in all this lounch together with NVIDIA. As shame to them.

Hi. I want to pair 3080 Strix OC with my 8700k@5Ghz (maybe planning upgrade to 10900K, not sure now :D ). Will it be ok with Corsair RM850x or im better to upgrade it for RM1000x? (Rest spec is 6x 1tb ssd, 1x hdd, Kraken X62 AIO). Thanks for the help!

Still waiting for EK to announce what cards they'll have waterblocks for. They have done Strix cards in the past.
I can almost guarantee with 100% certainty that EK will have a waterblock for this. Strix are the only cards I buy and EK has always had a block for them.
@@mikeschimminger7886 Ya, I checked their site after posting that and they do have them for pre-order. They are also doing the TUF cards, and of course FE and reference blocks.
Not a fan of the ridiculous amount of branding that they slap on these cards. I think it just makes them look silly.
Love what they did with the founders cards but I would of been nice to get some more RGB's on them.
