- Can a car this small really offer luxury?
The Lexus LBX is here to make you think differently about whether you need a huge SUV for a high-end experience.
The new hybrid only Lexus LBX 2024 model range is tiny - just under 4.2 metres long - but with a big old dollop of luxe and plush thrown in.
There are some items that prestige SUV customers might be left wanting for, but for those who are looking to get into their first car from a luxury brand, or maybe they're weighing this smaller crossover up against larger mainstream models, it does make a bit of sense.
I've named a few alternatives in my review, and here's a list you might want to take a look at:
Honda HR-V - • Not like it used to be...
Toyota C-HR - • 2024 Toyota C-HR hybri...
Skoda Kamiq - • $10K more expensive no...

Good review Matt thanks
As always Matt you are a champion at reviews 👍 Big thank you mate after watching many reviews yours has sold me on one of these little gems. Absolutely perfect for my needs 🙌 2wd Sports Luxury in red is the cream for me. Keep up your awesome work and send you 🇦🇺 Melbourne positive vibes ❤
Thats a beautiful little car and great review
Good one mate as always!
No spare tyre option is a bummer and at least a space saver should be available on the 2WD drive models. Back seats not folding flat is also a shame.
Matt why are you so good at this stuff
Great review, honest comments with plenty of facts. Personally i am really pleased that Lexus have brought out theur smallest option with the Lexus quality. Mine is on order, Excited
I love that you suggest alternatives.
Thanks! Glad it’s helpful.
Great review as usual! Where's the location? Is it near Luna Park?
Thanks mate.
It's at the end of Darling Island Road, Pyrmont.
Matt hi - what bi tone color option would you suggest? The one you tested (copper with black roof or the sonic white with the black roof)? Many thanks. Your review was great
Thank you! I really appreciate that feedback.
Personally, I really like the copper colour - but I’m not sure if I would want to own it. Colour is such a subjective thing, I think it’s definitely worth you going to find out for yourself in person which one appeals to you and your eyes. Let me know if if you buy one!
A small hatchback is ideal for economy and manoeuvrability and is all we need (we're in our 70s) for our short local runs, but we insist on quality.
As an alternative, the Mazda CX30 hybrid would offer fair competition. In fact, I'd rate it slightly ahead in that its ICE motor doesn't require a transmission as it's only there to spin the generator to charge the battery.
Do a side by side between lbx and Yaris cross
Excellent review of a nicely presented small SUV. This must be the cheapest Lexus. The interior seems well designed and comfortable. I’m not into hybrids and prefer EV’s, and the battery range is rather limited, but even so it would be cheap to run in an urban setting. If I was in the market for a comfortable small SUV I’d consider the LBX and I’d choose it ahead of Skoda. Thanks for an interesting review.
Carsales Australia just did a review on it.
This is what their motoring editor wrote in the “what’s it like to drive” section:
“There’s clearly been an attempt to imbue the 2024 Lexus LBX with some big-car gravitas. It steers with some heft and sits quite solid and planted on the road, despite its diminutive size and light kerb weight (1330kg 2WD or 1415kg in AWD form).
Add in a significant amount of noise deadening of various types and the LBX is also more remote from engine, road and tyre noise than a typical small car. It’s still there, but dulled.
In 2WD or AWD form it is a well-resolved and enjoyable small car to drive. Its small size makes it nippy around town and its well-resolved dynamics make it entertaining on the open road.
Lexus has taken the same TNGA-B platform as the Yaris Cross for the LBX, but stiffened it to make it more sporting.
For all the work by Lexus engineers, the LBX’s origins are undeniable. There’s still some triple-cylinder growl evident from the engine under acceleration (the sound enhancement is, er, subtle) and the wheelbase isn’t long enough to stop the ride getting a bit jiggy on the rough stuff.
That especially applies at low speeds. At higher speeds it improves, but never disappears. That applies in the 2WD fitted with a torsion beam rear axle and the AWD, which swaps to a more compact independent set-up to help the electronic AWD gubbins fit.
The performance from the powertrain is far from luxurious. Call it adequate rather than abundant. There’s no doubt electrification provides assistance, especially from a standstill, but you’re keeping up with the traffic in this car, not sprinting ahead.
Lexus claims a 9.2sec 0-100km/h time for the 2WD and 9.6sec for the heavier AWD. It feels about right.
Funnily enough, there’s no sports mode to elevate the drivetrain and the Sports Luxury’s paddle shifters provide little more assistance than a placebo.
Left to its own devices, the CVT does some of that inane buzzing commonly found with CVTs, but it’s not too awful.”

Why post this on my review?
@@therightcarsorry mate. I meant no offence.
I just wanted to point out to all the 25 year olds that this is in fact not good value, a luxury car or by any mean’s substantially different from the Yaris Cross on which it’s based.
Everyone was giving this car credit but no one seems to realise it’s just more Lexus jacking up the price and giving us less. They have not differentiated this car enough to warrant the 20k+ price difference over the equivalent Yaris cross. I have watched a couple of reviews where this point was mentioned.
John Pappas’ interview on the car showed just how much regard he has for the Aussie public and their intelligence in my opinion. It was like he couldn’t help but laugh when he mentioned the price.
Ordered the Sport Luxury 2WD in sonic chrome
Congratulations 🥂
Lexus quality and reliability 👍
You mean Toyota, don't you ?
@@buncha5651 no I meant Lexus.
@@GEE819has gone downhill just like all other marques.
Park next to a Yaris cross and you will kick yourself for spending 25K more on the same car.
I used to love Lexus. My favourite car of all time was my first is200 sports luxury in 2001. That car was a work of art with a glorious smooth straight six. Every IS since then has been a cost cutting exercise.
The new cars are just Toyotas with some leather and new badging and NVH work.
@@Allanhyde264 no not at all. Lexus and Toyota have picked up there game with there Japanese made cars compared with the German high end rivals. Lexus has always been the pinnacle of fit and finish compared to other brands. So I won’t be kicking my self lol
@@Allanhyde264A Excel Spec (Top spec) Yaris Cross is £35k. A (Mid Spec) Premium Plus LBX is £35k and has more kit and far better road manners. Unless you’ve driven both stop waffling.
And yeah every Lexus is a Heavily re-engineered Toyota. Welcome to literally the last 30 years, including your old IS200 🙃
Are there vents under the front seats that point to the back? I found out that a lot of cars have this including my 2009 Honda civic. Why do most car reviewers not mention this?
Thanks for your comment. Yes there are foot vents - reviewers know that when you’re carsick, having cool feet isn’t going to help, but having a breeze on your face will. Or even just if you’re sitting in a car and it’s a bit warm… directional air vents are important as a family feature.
@@therightcar Thanks, that makes sense.
@@therightcar totally. Why are consumers so interested in giving large multtinational companies passes nowadays for giving us less and charging us more?
Car companies know they can treat the public poorly because people keep buying crap.
It is an upgraded replacement of the discontinued ct200h.
Spot on about the lack of spare tyre. Even ct200h has space saving tyre such that I feel comfortable to drive into regional towns. This is more for driving in major cities only.
Just buy a space saver wouldn't need to be genuine $100-200.
@@mackeymichael not just the cost. It is the boot space.
@@skymonkey98 if the Yaris Cross has a space saver in shirt it wouldn't be hard to get one to fit the Lexus.
11pm! Geez Matt.
I'm not looking to change my car (downsize) for a couple of years but this is top of my list. My only issue is the power and I'm hoping Lexus will release a more powerful engine before I need to change my current car (Toyota RAV4).
There’s a good chance a more powerful version will come, with a higher price….
Seems like a great little suv but wait, don't buy one yet. The LBX MORIZO is on it's way. That's the one to get !!! 😊
Hands up who wants to pay too much for a Yaris Cross?
😂
Lots of sheep in australia mate.. put a badge on a garbage bin and they will pay through the nose.
A great high quality good looking car but just too small for me. I struggled getting into and out of the LBX
Fair enough mate. It’s not for everyone.
This will be interesting, maybe At least it doesn't have the ugly grill.
Is that a faint sense of an optimistic comment?!
@therightcar
As long as it's a hybrid and not a rechargeable EV .
According to Lexus the LBX is the first of a brand new design style so expect all the next models to drop the angular grills and go to similar to the LBX
I am waiting for Canon vs musso and New dmax vs new Triton video . PLz ..
My parents went to a Lexus dealership last month and looked at the larger NX. He found it a little too big, and too expensive for the hybrid versions, of which there was a six month's long wait for, anyway. The dealer told him a new, smaller model was on the way and suggested he come back for a test drive when it arrives. A week later, he revisited the dealership and checked out the new model, the LBX. He slid himself in behind the wheel and quickly discovered he could barely fit inside it.
He found it drove nicely, but was too cramped inside to treat seriously as a long term purchase. It's astounding the Lexus offer's nothing between the NX, and the LBX.
So he walked across to the Toyota mob over the road, and tested the new CH/R, which was bigger, offered hybrid, and ticked every box for him. The ungainly rear styling of the previous model was now gone, and he found it easy to navigate around. The only negatives were the three month wait and the high price. He couldn't buy the vehicle he actually test drove. He gets his in June.
Lexus needs something CH/R sized.
They have the UX, which is exactly that car. Please pass on my review - you’ll find it on the channel.

It's funny, the dealer never mentioned those. Dad and I are Toyota men, but we really know nothing about Lexus! 😱
Where i live, this kind of car is desperately needed, not more oversized fuel-deficient SUVs.
I have owned Lexus since the is200 was first released nearly 25 years ago.
Since that time, the brand has continued to go downhill. This is a glorified Yaris. It doesn’t even have rear air vents for gods sake. How can you call it a luxury car?
IS200 doesn't have it either. So what's wrong with it? Air vents or not is mainly because of car size and cabin airflow requirements.
@@bernardshum2719 25 years ago many cars that were premium didn’t have it. Nowadays they all should.
Aren't all Lexii based on a standard Toyota?
like it
For an urban car from Lexus you would expect better at this price range. The 1.5 liter engine sounds like a diesel and has a lot of vibrations. It is overpriced in my opinion. I own a Yaris Cross awdi, same architecture, same engine. But I have a panoramic sunroof. I would choose a CHR, a Corolla Cross or a RAV4 in that price range.
Fair points re the rival Toyota offerings. $55k gets you a really delightful AWD Corolla Cross Atmos hybrid.
@@therightcar Corolla Cross would be my choice, too. I had the opportunity to drive test it for a weekend and thoush it's a simple car, it is better than anything from Toyota, considering the price. One minor issue, though, the exhaust protrudes too much under the car. :D That is my only complain. :))
No rear seat center armrest with cupholder should be standard plus no sunroof is bizarrely bad decision. The car will feel a lot smaller.
strange. there is a moon roof option here ????
No moon roof here.
No spare wheel, no deal😂
Why call this a SUV? It's a hatchback. I don't get the idea of calling everything a SUV now. According to FORD the definition of a SUV is "An SUV is a Sport Utility Vehicle. Powered for performance, an SUV should stand up to tough conditions and harsh environments, without compromising on interior comforts.". This Yaris (Strike) Lexus does not qualify being called a SUV. It does not "perform", it will most like not survive tough conditions and its small therefore compromising comfort.
A Yaris Cross with lipstick and $15,000 price penalty. I don't think so.😊
Nothing to do with this LBX the YC.
insane that these models do not have a spare. What happens when you are out of mobile range, your tyre gets slashed and all you have between you and getting home is that puncture repair kit.......you are f...ed ;(
Hybrid engine is not good for offroad heavy duty adventure, diesel engine is the best
No-one’s suggesting you go off-road in this.
@@therightcar if we buy a car mostly SUV and double cabin pickup truck ours thinking only One you can go anywhere around the world without issue problems of engine, easier to get found the fuel no need charging, can go into the water , flooded or heavy rain, uphill and mountains, offroad, highway every where can go so diesel engine is the best for this adventure
We have a NX450H+ and have expected to replace our second car with a small EV. However the 450H+ gives us enough EV range and so we have ordered the 4WD LBX for delivery in August. Having 2 cars of the same make with like systems is an advantage and the Lexus perks make the investment excellent.
Outside design is horrendous looks like a cartoon character
New Mini Cooper much better. If you have a soul. 😂
Haha I can’t wait to drive the new Cooper! 👌
Hahaha, the ad before this is for an Audi, don’t buy one, their DSG gearboxes go to shit. Lexus are superior cars.
3 cylinder + CVT does not sound any good to me. Yaris Cross with a bit of fakery.
Having to stay up till midnight for this overpriced little thing.
He's 6' FFS!

Interior looks cheap.
You think? It’s nicer than the UX, which costs more.
@@therightcar idk, the interior quality reminds me of Renault Capture, Peugeot 2008 look wven better thank this one. Just my opinion
