I think Americans mindset as a American who drives a small subcompact is that they look kinda dorky. At least the modern small cars. The average person also just doesn't see a small car as a true genuine option when buying a car. Safety is a concern as well. I think I would die hitting a wall let alone any other car. Also paying 30 grand for such a small car is a very hard sell. The type of mindset to buy a car like a A class or LBX is just mostly absent in America. 30 grand can be spent elsewhere for a larger car in most Americans heads.

Great review, and I'm really charmed by this little car. I've never understood why there's so little apparent appetite for a "nice" small car. Improving the driving feel and interior materials over the Toyota counterpart and retaining the diminutive engine sounds correct.

Thanks for an awesome unbiased review. I am very concerned that BMW & Mercedes are discontinuing their smaller offerings. I feel like Lexus did an exceptional job creating a much more premium product from their Toyota Yaris Cross. I definitely dislike those electric door-opening buttons. That's totally unnecessary, and when they do fail, you won't have the reflex of understanding the manual release (I think). But I do find it fantastic that Toyota still builds small cars (elsewhere at least). Great review of an interesting car. It's a shame other manufacturers are dropping their small model and it shows up a significant flaw in governments net zero policies. Small cars should be given tax breaks so that remain attractive to build and buy as they have less environmental impact on build and over their lifetime. Lexus is to be congratulated for bringing a new model into this segment and I like it a lot. Nice exterior style and I like the integration of the tech inside. Its conservative for sure but probably way easier to use than a lot of interfaces we are seeing now and it looks a respectable interior for this class and price point. I think this would be an easy car to get along with - good job Lexus !
The 2024 Yaris Cross and 2024 Yaris hatchback now in Europe has a 96kw/130hp model called "Hybrid 130" which has almost identical acceleration performance to this Lexus LBX but for a lot less money. They can be bought in FWD and AWD flavours.
I agree about the engine. Have a 1.5L option for people mainly using it as a city runaround but a 2L with AWD would be a fantastic option for people who tend to do longer journeys…
Very nice premium build car, fit and finish, build quality so much better than the German brands. For a B segment car, this is best of the best... . Why do you compare this car with a C segment A class????? I rather think the German b and C segment rivals from Vw, Audi, Bmw, Mercedes have less materials in the interiors.....to save money.
Regarding the non-premium car details that have been found, I think that as this is a pre-production unit, it is important to report these faults to Lexus so that they can fix them. Great Review ;-)
As an old school Lexus owner in OZ we now have both a 2020 Lexus UX and Corolla in the garage. The 2 cars are exceptionally close and it would be impossible to justify the cost difference to buy the UX. Having said that; no one willing chooses to drive the Corolla over the UX. "Sliding" into the drivers lounge of UX feels like piloting a LC with the comfort of a LS. Jumping into the Corolla is like, well, jumping into a Corolla..... Having said that; the UX rear passenger and luggage space is abysmal, we don't even bother having the rear seats up. So from our perspective Lexus has us beat; the Corolla is a fantastic car but if you want the polish quit complaining and get a Lexus. If the small Lexus is too small; then buy a bigger Lexus. If you can't afford a bigger Lexus then get a Toyota, afterall they are nearly as good. You would be crazy to risk your money on some Euro-trash when your friends at Toyota/Lexus have an answer for everything! The only exception to their cunning marketing is the F Sport nonsense; Lexus is luxury, DUH. If you want an underpowered, hard riding, average handling, sportish car yeah buy one but really any Euro Sports is better. Sure the F Sport will be 1 million percent reliable but that is not the purpose of a "real" sports car.
An interesting review which shows one answer to how a premium brand tries to produce an affordable car which is still premium. To my mind BMW have already cracked this with their Mini Electric, if you do not go over the top with the options. The most interesting feature of this review is how Lexus have used tweaks to traditional suspension and braking to achieve some of the effects which other brands achieve with some form of air suspension. To my mind one or other version of the Mazda MX30 makes a similar trade off of premium quality and affordability.
Lexus of Japan has fitted the GR Yaris engine into the LBX. The Lexus LBX Morizo RR packs the same 1.6-litre G16E-GT turbocharged three-cylinder engine found in the GR Corolla and GR Yaris, and it also comes with a six-speed manual transmission.
Is it possible to turn off the infotainment and driving assist “beep” alerts fully? (Asking on behalf of my Dog who is terrified of beeping). I appreciate my beep-free X3.
I prefer the Toyota - Lexus approach, with hybrid tech, definitely… over EVs. Another brilliant review Thomas, and great to see your trip was not a lonely one! That is a very good package, well done Lexus! All the best to you for the New Year! Cheers, Tom.
electric cars will end up being in the junk yard after EOL of the batteries because nobody will be willing for fork over $15-20k for EV batteries. Meanwhile a 4-5k replacement of the hybrid battery will keep Toyota/Lexus on the road.
Nice video, as usual! Toyota/Lexus said the current battery electric cars are not the right solution. They are working on solid state batteries and also hydrogen which I think is the long term solution, but we need government to get behind it.
Danke, Tomas and Lea (spelling??) I had lunch with a friend yesterday. A buddy of his drives a Lexus plug-in hybrid that needs a new HV battery. Unfortunately he’s just passed his battery warranty period and he’s being quoted ~$CAD30K to replace the battery pack. Quite shocking to hear such a high price for a non BEV. Ever hear of such costs on a plug-in hybrid??
Plugin batteries are tiny and cost rather few K $, Euros, Pounds. Around 5K. 30K sounds a lot. You also have 10 years warranty in Europe if you service car at the dealer.
Surprised you found the seating position similar to a normal hatchback as the LBX height 1560mm is the same as for Yaris Cross. You must have extremely extremely long legs as I'm 6ft 1inch and can easily sit behind myself in a Yaris Cross. The wheelbase of LBX is 10mm longer than Yaris Cross. Anyway whatever, thanks for the review.
Thomas could you go into the durability of these new cars a bit more? One factor of eco friendliness ought to be how long the vehicle will be used for. Do we have to change our cars every three years? Also could you take the cars over a variety of roads. City roads are easy peasy. How strong is the suspension in this little Lexus? I think I would like a cross country version, if they will make one.
I currently have a Mk4 Yaris Hybrid in GR-Sport trim. Have test driven the Yaris Cross Hybrid but the car didn’t justify the extra price tag (good car just not enough to differentiate it from the Hatchback for me). This LBX however, this has absolutely gotten my attention and I’m looking forward to getting a test drive and discussing the specs once the official U.K. Specifications for trim levels is released.
Basically a Yaris Cross that is quieter and slightly better for longer drives, which is actually a very interesting proposition, because in many places in the EU, a small SUV is the best choice, especially is there are dirt roads where you live and wants slightly better ground clearance.
How is the difference 1.5 seconds, when Toyota Yaris will have same engine? How did they achieved that Thomas, do you maybe know? Good job with detailed reviews!
Yes, the much cheaper 2024 Yaris Cross "Hybrid 130" (also 2024 Yaris hatchback hybrid too) has almost the same engine power and torque as this Lexus LBX. Yaris Cross can be bought as FWD and AWD. I do prefer the exterior and interior of the Lexus LBX but the price difference to Yaris Cross "Hybrid 130" is significant. I do agree with Thomas that for Lexus LBX price I expect more power/torque even if the fuel economy is a ~10% worse than Toyota Yaris Cross. Very nice video from Thomas.
@@jdmguy44 the Lexus LBX high-price (so far?) seems to be too close to (next size up) Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD/FWD which has a much better drive-train (35% more power and torque and full 1 second faster to 100kmh) and also +30cm longer with much more room for rear passengers and more luggage space too. Lexus LBX has tried to polish things up, agreed, but so far I can only see this polish appealing to people who just want to buy a Lexus. Anyone comparing apples to apples can either save a lot of money by bying a 2024 Yaris Cross Hybrid-130 FWD/AWD or spend the same money as Lexus LBX and buy a much better car - a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid FWD/AWD. I would consider Lexus LBX if it was significantly cheaper than Corolla Cross Hybrid.
How is it better than a KIA Soul? Both cars are similar in utility, have four wheels, seats, etc. One is vastly cheaper than the other but both perform the same function well.
I've bought a Mercedes B class 12 years ago and am now thinking about replacing it with a new one. Then Lexus LBX and Yaris Cross came into my shortlist. I guess with Lexus you go more prestige and Yaris perhaps more economic. It's hard to decide between the 2 though.
Lexus is always under power for their new models. Not just this little car but also most of other models. It is only in their LS400 to 460 era, ISF, they are on par with the Germans. When the Germans went turbo charging their V6, I6, V8. Lexus did not adapt straight away. Maybe for technical reason, reliability, or maybe the economics reason. When they caught up with their V6 and the 4 cylinder turbo so late in the game, it does not stand out in the crowd. But their late exterior design is getting back in the game, hopefully they can offer sportier characteristics.
It's nice to finally see a inexpensive, reliable vehicle sold in Europe. For the longest time I stopped listening to Autogefuel because vehicles were just too expensive or with reliability repuations impossible to endure in the United States. The base vehicle is at least concievable, although a fwd ICE RAV4 is superior in most ordinary situations here. Meanwhile German cars are fading in US. Defects like the MB premium m278 engine's brief life due muktiplle defects and lack of MB corrective recalss for defects are genading repuations as we settle on Toyota and Tesla as our premium choices.
I agree that interior quality is declining in the “premium” segment. My last 3 cars have been Audis and interior quality is steadily getting worse. Interestingly, the opposite applies to Kia and Hyundai.
I think these vehicles are very niche. Not a lot of people have the money to go for something like this to begin with and also with everything done and dusted it doesn't make sense either. For the purposes this vehicle is made for and costing 30K as a baseline means that people with one vehicle option in mind will skip that one immediately and will go directly to C segment or cheap B segment. The target for this are the few and not only few but also in certain circumstances limiting the appeal.
I think this is a great little car. Don’t have issues with the perceived built quality at all. It’s a Lexus so I know it will last longer than most other cars. Also I don’t really think $30k is what I’d call a premium car anymore. You can’t get much for 30k anymore
I did get a sneak preview and did sit inside in the LBX in my local showroom. As awesome and flashy and kit out it is, it'll be abit tight for someone like me at the back that's about 1.76m tall.
If this is the 1.6L three cylinder this is about to be able to be tuned to 650HP and this thing will be a track BEAST 🤘🤘😎 Lexus is my favorite brand forever
I like it, as a Tesla model 3 owner, I would like to be able to have an electric model. I am living around and working in Paris, France. So smaller car are more practical without sacrificing comfort and quality.
It annoys me when ignorant people say just a Toyota I have owned lots of Toyotas and on my 7th Lexus 👍 Far superior quality above the amazing quality always found in Toyotas can't beat JAPANESE QUALITY 🙏👍 cheers Stephen 🤠⭐
First thing I think of when I hear 45K price and I look at this body size is Renault Megane electric. 100 more HP and instant torque and at least from reviews it looks like it has a better and classier interior than this Lexus. That's what I would go for if I had that kind of money to blow.
Great review, the car will do well, assuming Toyota can keep up with demand. Biggest surprise was that Mercedes is withdrawing from the German taxi market!

I agree about the engine. Have a 1.5L option for people mainly using it as a city runaround but a 2L with AWD would be a fantastic option for people who tend to do longer journeys…
We always enjoy your in depth and unbiased reviews, you have my vote for autojournalist of the year 👌
Highly appreciated! Please recommend and share :-)
Guys, I love you so much. The attention to every detail is always on top 2:47! You’ve the car into shade to show the indicators
glad that people recognize that we always go the extra mile !
@2:40, wipers with integrated spray has nothing to do with premium, C4 cactus had those being a "low cost" car
Not sure how I feel about this. I keep thinking of the Aston Cygnet 😅
Please review the LBX Morizo version as that's the only LBX that's interesting to me.
Came for the car, stayed for Lea
=)
An interesting review which shows one answer to how a premium brand tries to produce an affordable car which is still premium. To my mind BMW have already cracked this with their Mini Electric, if you do not go over the top with the options. The most interesting feature of this review is how Lexus have used tweaks to traditional suspension and braking to achieve some of the effects which other brands achieve with some form of air suspension. To my mind one or other version of the Mazda MX30 makes a similar trade off of premium quality and affordability.
Afaik Mini doesn't offer anything comparable anymore, won't their new gen hatchback be 2-door only? And Countryman got much bigger and is now €40k+.
Rear turn signals are 100% bigger than all BMW indicators.
@@PWCDN BEVs have their pros and cons, but thanks to the idiotic politicians from some countries, BEVs are still seen more negatively then expected.
Nice video, as usual! Toyota/Lexus said the current battery electric cars are not the right solution. They are working on solid state batteries and also hydrogen which I think is the long term solution, but we need government to get behind it.
So, will those wiper sprays function with temperatures below 0? (Sweden here....)
Danke, Tomas and Lea (spelling??)
I had lunch with a friend yesterday.
It’s technically based on Yaris Cross since both are TNGA-B, but kinda not, since only 15% of components are actually shared between the two.
3:40 ; turning indicator is the sama as by the UX250h, little and small indication for a premium car. they don't used Audi lights !
I love it! It's perfect for people who doesn't like super tiny cars and a bit more like mini suv sits higher and looks wise more sportier.
Hi Thomas if audi stops making the A1 will vw stop making the polo
Polo is being replaced with the iD.2
@@GlitterGuru thanks
Basically a Yaris Cross that is quieter and slightly better for longer drives, which is actually a very interesting proposition, because in many places in the EU, a small SUV is the best choice, especially is there are dirt roads where you live and wants slightly better ground clearance.
U say a Yaris Cross is quieter?
Gorgeous windshield wiper!
Taken over from Volvo. My xc40 has this already.
really@@kurtjacobs8834
Nissan GTR and 370Z had these wipers already back in 2008. I have never understood why other manufacturers have taken so long to adopt this
@@kurtjacobs8834 @Robert_Langer
I don't think you understood the comment.
It's the girl not the wiper!
the style and contrasting. colors of the door handles , have a sturdy appearance
Lexus have re-engineered the hybrid drive train in this. It is not simply carried straight over from the Yaris Cross as some seem to think.
@@jdmguy44 Thanks for info. Do you think it will carry over to Yaris/Cross in next model year?
@@mjuresic The changes to the battery and hybrid system will be exclusive to the LBX.
I would consider Lexus LBX if it was significantly cheaper than Corolla Cross Hybrid.
great video, I am excited to try the lbx
Highly appreciated! Please recommend us! 😎
Lexus seems to have put in quite some effort on the details that makes you feel premium
Good job
Europe that's where this car will sell, small, compact & a smidge of class to stand out in the school car park
I love the presenter's sense of humour and he is about treating all cars irrespective of where they are made equally a true professional.
highly appreciated! Please share :-)
Was this a pre-production car?
I'm sure it was. Those quality issues are therefore easily explained.
Subjective of course, but I think that is a very attractive Lexus v rest of the range.
The review of course, objective as usual.
Thanks Thomas. 👍
I have a Yaris Cross so hope this is still around when we change it. Great review as always, well done!
Ditching our Mercedes for one of these, coming in March . Want better reliability from our car.
Audi also does platform sharing, so it is definitely profitable for them.
Just ordered one this week.
Enjoy!
That's a great looking front end in 2024. Appeals to younger folks - unlike a lot of 'sporty' Lexuses.
the Ct200h probably got discontinued for this in the states which isn’t bad but the price is sort of high but not bad for an SUV
9:33 ; glvebox probems ? pre production version maby ???
Acoustic windows in the front ? wich version is this?
Glad to see you in Valencia! I hope you are enjoy the sun :)
I really hope this will be offered in Canada I love it
I agree that interior quality is declining in the “premium” segment. My last 3 cars have been Audis and interior quality is steadily getting worse. Interestingly, the opposite applies to Kia and Hyundai.
Shoutout for your beautiful assistant :)
Great review. Thank you.
Best reliability and durability, very fuel efficient and low depreciation.
No contrast stitching in the steering wheel :/
🙄
I think this is a great little car. Don’t have issues with the perceived built quality at all. It’s a Lexus so I know it will last longer than most other cars. Also I don’t really think $30k is what I’d call a premium car anymore. You can’t get much for 30k anymore
even a peugeot 208 is 30 k nowadays 🤣
Some comment that the LBX is too expensive. I think they need a reality check. A Vauxhall/Opel Corsa is around £20k new.
Actually, Lexus and Toyota are the longest lasting brands in existence.
Love your reviews. Keep it up!
cheers m8 !
Thank you Lexus… Ignore the pessimism- we need to get to work & back without stress
South Africa is ready for you🤞🏽
I did get a sneak preview and did sit inside in the LBX in my local showroom. As awesome and flashy and kit out it is, it'll be abit tight for someone like me at the back that's about 1.76m tall.
Excellent review
Will this undercut the UX?
Can you review the DS 3 crossover?
If this is the 1.6L three cylinder this is about to be able to be tuned to 650HP and this thing will be a track BEAST 🤘🤘😎 Lexus is my favorite brand forever
imo it should have a F model with the Yaris GR drivetrain and it would be complete.
How is it VS the UX?
I like it, as a Tesla model 3 owner, I would like to be able to have an electric model. I am living around and working in Paris, France. So smaller car are more practical without sacrificing comfort and quality.
It annoys me when ignorant people say just a Toyota I have owned lots of Toyotas and on my 7th Lexus 👍 Far superior quality above the amazing quality always found in Toyotas can't beat JAPANESE QUALITY 🙏👍 cheers Stephen 🤠⭐
Hi, Thomas The new Lexus LBX it's very cool!
This is good size for the euro market, i dont think it will do well in the NA market
When a review of the Mercedes GLC 450d?
This would be great for my parents. They don't need a big car, they live in a city, they need trunk space, they need a little luxury.
