  • Spooked: A Very Australian Guide to Halloween bit.ly/POPHalloweenInspo * unless it's through a prescription. I thought most of you guys probably wouldn't know this about contact lenses, and now is the perfect time of year to help fix that! Safety first. Subscribe to Freakmo here: bit.ly/1QHJigm
    A couple of news articles on the topic:
    www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/...
    www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/Consu...
    makeupmag.com/top-make-artist...
    metro.co.uk/2016/10/24/health-...
    There's two websites that optometrists or lens techs have told me are safe, which are:
    Samhain Lenses, these are all hand painted, so they will be a higher quality and more realistic lens:
    samhaincontactlenses.com/
    And exoticlenses.com/ which have mostly printed lenses.
    There's more websites that are safe but I'm not 100% sure on them until someone inside the industry has given them the thumbs up. But as I said in the video, I'd avoid buying lenses from anyone who doesn't bother to verify a prescription first.

    Trust me, you don't want to lose your vision. I was diagnosed with an eye disease in 2014 that came out of nowhere and it caused me to lose about 75% of my vision. And it is the worst thing I've ever had to deal with. I'm getting my vision back slowly but I have to go to monthly appointments to get shots in my eyes. Yes, in my eyes. PLEASE, be careful with your eyes, even though this disease came out of absolutely nowhere you always need to take precautions.

    yes! I'm an ophthalmic technician, and will be going to optometry school in 2 years. Every year we see soooo many terrible contact lens cases. Abrasions, ulcers, horrible infections, acanthamoeba, etc. We saw a 16 year old girl yesterday who got an infection because she overwore her contacts. She will have a permanent scar over one eye now. She'll end up needing a cornea transplant some day. Her vision went from 20/20 to barely counting fingers :/. Eye health is so important!

      ***** she was correctable to 20/20 (with contacts.) Now her best corrected vision is counting fingers.

    Oh man, it amazes me how there are a lot of people out there that just buy the cheapest contacts possible. I work at a haunted house, and there were people who were swapping contacts directly from their eyes into other peoples eyes!!! Or they were offering other people to borrow their own pair! What the heck!! who does that?! Thanks for making this video so people stop getting hurt!
    Looking forward to the sclera video!

    Yo! It's Saturday night Halloween weekend and I'm sitting at home uploading videos about contact lens safety XP
    I've put the comments on this video to "approved" only, so they won't show up publicly until I approve them. This is just a precaution because the last time I uploaded a contact lens video, some of the comments were truly idiotic.
    I'm about to head to bed, so I will be able to approve comments and respond to stuff in several hours when I awake from my slumber :D

      Literally any website that you can add contact lenses to your cart and check out without them asking for your eye measurements, or telling you the BC, diameter, power, and asking for your prescription.

    I used to work at a costume and novelty store and we always got questions and requests for these. Especially during Halloween season. We insisted people not buy colored contact lenses from anyone other than a licensed optometrist because the contacts, like any other form of eyewear, would need to be prescribed lest they damage their eyes. Of course, some people won't take this seriously and will purchase them anyway, but I really have to insist. I'm glad this is being put out there.

    I don't know if youtube recommended this to me because it's close to halloween or they know an Ophthalmologist gave a lecture at my Pre-Med club and mentioned he get a lot of business around halloween because of non-FDA colored contacts. Damn those cookies.

    I was in a Facebook group and some of the members were talking about buying cheap, non-prescription contacts for $3 USD (yes, $3) from a China-based website. I was kicked from the group because my opinion about buying them was wrong. I was trying to prevent people from temporarily or permanently blinding themselves by offering some information about the dangers of being careless with their eyes, but oh well. Anyways, thank you for this informative video!

    I wore prescription contact lenses for years until I got Lasik. If they ever seem "stuck" in your eye, first wash your hands, flood the eye with Saline solution and only then try to move the contact lens to get lubrication under the lens. Then you can remove them. If you rub your eyes or attempt to remove them while your eyes are dry your corneas will get scratched.

    I've been in bifocals since I was 4 and contacts since I was 9, and seeing people promoting websites for contact lenses that don't require measurements or a prescription scares me so much!
    I only once tried contacts from a skeevy website, and even though I was careful and knew how to properly do everything, the lens was too small and as soon as I put it in, it felt WEIRD. I took it out, and went to see my optometrist, and I did end up with a corneal abrasion.

      They suck so much hey! Mine was from a storm blowing up some debris into my eye, took me out of commission for a few days where I just couldn't open my eyes from the pain. It hurt so much that I went to the hospital, only to be told there's nothing in them and there's nothing I can do but wait for them to heal and use eye drops to help hydrate them.

    Thank you for posting this! I've always wanted to try out coloured contact lenses but never knew where to start, who to buy from and so on. I didn't even know you had to visit an optician before buying them and make sure you're getting ones that fit properly, I thought they were all one size fits all haha! Shows how much I knew. Thank you for educating me a little more.

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah I thought that too when I was younger :) But it's one size fits most, not all, and if you fall outside of that then it can do serious damage. Then there's all the other risks not associated with the size but with use - like scratching your eyes while putting them in, storing them hygienically and causing infections, or the lens being too low a quality and not allowing any oxygen to get to the eye.

    Im so glad you make these types of videos for those who dont know!! I've had a couple of friends who have worn cheap coloured contacts from random street stores and i was super worried about them. • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Hey! There's a chance the lenses are a fine quality and will fit your eye, it's just better to know before you wear them for a few hours, rather than find out later haha. Take them to your optometrist and they can measure you and let you know :)

    I remember when I was in high school and colored contacts became a huge thing. They'd sell them in random stores like they were jewelry. Everyone was wearing them, but I never trusted sticking things in my eyes that weren't approved by an optometrist. Granted, I know I push the limits with changing out my contacts to a new pair, and my optometrist chewed me out the last time I was in there. He told me there's a coating on the contacts that fights bacteria and it only lasts about thirty days. After that, you're risking infection. 😂 He even compared them to wearing the same pair of underwear for thirty days. Said that was nasty and I need to change my underwear. I about died laughing. He made a great point though.

    I went to optometrist about a year ago, and after he checked my eyes, he asked me "any questions before you go?"
    And I asked him about color contacts.
    And he said, "for cosmetics? Don't buy them, only good for Halloween. A waste of money."
    And then he didn't tell me anything more about colored contacts other than that.
    I'm really interested in buying color contacts, but I don't want to buy them without knowing my measurements.

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Haha yeah some people are like that, it's frustrating. Not all optometrists will sell them here, but so far most have been willing to help me which is good. There are definitely some judgemental ones, and it's like "hey I'm trying to do the right thing here and be safe, so are you gonna help me or what?" :(
      I'd try calling a few different optometrists ahead of time to check that they are able to assist you with it, there should be someone who is willing to help.

    Thanks for making this video. I've always thought about buying lenses from the online Asian companies but there was always something shady about them. My eyes are first not my money. I've found so many coloured contact lenses selling on the internet (I'm from Malaysia) and it bugs me about all the risk of wearing it when I see them selling those. I have many friends who are online sellers and they sell a lot of it and even bought it for themselves! Yes, it may look pretty and cool, but look what fake eye makeup did to me; an eye infection. This is my third time this year suffering one. By that, our eyes are very sensitive and I often notice that most people don't really care about their's unless something is happening to that area. So, thank you for making this video, I will definitely share this to my friends that are thinking to buy one online.

      If they allow you to put a contact lens in the cart and check out without you putting in your measurements, and don't ever verify your prescription, then I wouldn't buy from them.

    how much do the ones you have cost in the US? im very curious and i really want to get eye contacts. but also GET IT SAFELY ^-^

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm not sure in the US. My cheapest ones from the optometrist here were $50. I've seen some printed ones in the US from exotic eyes which might be like $35 through to $70, and they verify prescription, and then the custom hand painted ones can be like $200 to $500 for a pair, but they last much longer than the printed lenses.

    You mentioned youre aussie, does Medicare cover the Optometrist visit?

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It sure does! It's free, then the lenses I got from my optrometrist (they stock colourvue and it fit my eye measurements) were like $40 - $50.

    so i wear contacts anyway is it safe to use the measurements and prescription etc of those to buy some contacts? online, probably colourvue lenses

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yep! That's what my optometrist sells. So my eyes will fit the 8.6 base curve, and 14mm diameter of the Colourvue ones so I have used those before and it's been fine for me. Other brands aren't sold in optometrists in Australia, I'm not sure if they're just too low a quality or what the deal is.

    Will the fake eye blood just disappear after time, or do you have to rinse your eyes with water?

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah it disappears fully after about 10 minutes, if it feels too sticky I use eye drops to help get the rest out.
