A lot of it is bollocks though. Eg The tiger head and the dolphin. Just because you draw lines on it, it's not golden ratio. The length of a dolphin is considerably more than its height+0.6 of its height.
The golden ratio is not 1.6 it closer to 1.618 and consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci sequence do not give the golden ratio however the limit of the sequence is the golden ratio. It's use in art and design is way over stated and forced to appear in many cases.
Been an architect for 35 years and use the golden ratio for laying out the building design. In fact, I use it for everything. Works every time it's used!
35 years? What are you bragging about, like it is some great revelation by you ? This is 'architect 101' and has been known and used for centuries all the way back to the ancient Greeks.
You'd be surprised at just how many practicing professional ignore this and churn out computer based designs that are nearly all mis-proportioned and awful spaces to be in. Not taught. In schools anymore is my guess as to the reason why.
@Subaru Natsuki 'phi' 1.618 is as common a known mathematical thing as 'pi' 3.14 and has been known and used in architecture to observed in the natural world for centuries. There are others, Google it. Start with Pythagorus or Archimedes.
@Subaru Natsuki It is a math/engineering basic principal formulated by the original mathematicians and engineers of ancient times. Do todays use the same laws of physics and math? What do you think idiot? Do a TH-cam search on phi in nature and in engineering, architecture, ancient and modern. Search on phi and art, biology while your at it. From Parthenon and Pyramids to Empire State Building and the White House You need proof that todays engineers don't use pi or phi...etc. Basic math functions? That question is a really special kind of stupid.

I’ve been familiar with the golden for many years but I’ve never seen anyone explain it with such passion & enthusiasm. This video is golden. Well done!
The passion is wrong. Some of the examples are true (number of spirals.) but overlaying the golden spiral on shapes of galaxies, nautilus shell, fetus, waves, and hurricanes is absolutely wrong. also "count the seeds" is meaningless. it is pleasing to the eye, and it is found in nature. but not in EVERYTHING

@@deborahhammonds6552 you can't do it without math, atleast that I know of. but it's easy, let's say you have a width of 5, multiply that by 1.6 and you end up with your length of 8. Speaking of a symPHOny the golden ratio in the musical scale is the Perfect 5th. We even say Phi in Five like Phive. 1plus the square root of 5 over 2. The significance of this is the fact that the dominant note of the whole scale is the Perfect 5th. It's the second most stable next to the root. This is why we call it a Power Chord. Every single chord contains the the root and 5th it's the basis of every chord except diminished chords. In western music, which is mostly written in Major, we omit the 7th scale degree as a chord because it's diminished and contains the tritone which is also known as the Devils interval. It's the same numbers in the number of spirals in pine cones and pineapples. It's even why we called them Adam and Eve for A-E or the symbol Æ but that's another long story. Let's just say it's the evidence for creation. God.
From the Introduction of the book "Liber Abaci" written by Fibannacci himself: 1) "I am the son of an official working in Bugia, Algeria". 2) There was a colony of Indian Merchants in that city. 3) "It was there that I was introduced to Indian Mathematics". Fibonacci further says- " I loved Indian Mathematics to such an extent above all others that I completely devoted myself to it" "I was also introduced to Greek, Arabic & Egyptian Math" "But I found ALL of them, EVEN Pythagoras, to be erroneous compared to Indian Mathematics" Fibonacci further says: "For this reason, basing my book COMPLETELY on Indian methods and applying myself with greatest attention to it, but not without adding something of my own thought, I forced myself to compose this book. I demonstrated everything with proof" Finally, Fibonacci says: " In my book, I have published the doctrine of Mathematics completely according to the Method of Indians. I have COMPLETELY adopted the (Mathematical) Method of Indians because it is the MOST effective" In his book, Fibonacci does NOT refer to #Fibonacci Series as "Fibonacci Series" Rather, he simply calls it "Indian Series". Unlike many other Europeans, Fibonacci was NOT a plagiarist. He clearly mentioned his source and acknowledged his credit to ancient Indians. Most good designers and artists purposely use this ratio all over in their work, but in spite of that, in my own experience with art composition, this ratio seems to be hard-wired into our DNA. In other words, this ratio just naturally shows up everywhere in art and design, whether intentionally or not. Awesome video. Thank you!

I'm a 76 year old pianist. I've been fascinated, first intuitively/audibly with the Golden Ratio and then intellectually especially related to painting which is one of my passions. In my non-mathematical brain I decided it's a lot about thirds, or the number 3, pi. You did say it pleases the eye. Absolutely and I may add the ear. I'd like to hear more about why this is pleasing to our brains but that's probably due to the Golden Ratio. Thank you.
I’ve had the gist of The Golden Ration but I have a much better grasp and understanding based on how well this is explained. Thanks for making it so simple.
I’m a woodworker and often use the golden ratio to get something in proportion so it looks right, (or pleasing to the eye.) chopping boards, serving platters, turned items, wooden bowls, etc.
Honestly. I stopped watching at 5:55 and read some comments. I got curious and then divided the total video time of 9:45 by 5:55. You have to convert to seconds because minutes arent base ten. Guess what happened. 585/367 = 1.594 which is approximately 1.6. It's just circumstantial though. The length of the video doesn't depend on how long I watch it and vice versa.
Are you implying that it's not really there? Because that's what that quote is meant to imply, that you're finding something that isn't there and that is just idiotic to believe about the golden ratio! Thank you for this presentation. I've studied the Golden Ratio quite a bit, and I must say that your explanation is the most enthusiastic and enjoyable video explanation I've seen ever. However, I must nitpick about Noah's Ark at 6:50 in the video. The video shows a ratio of 25 cubits to 15 cubits (length x width). In Genesis 6:15, the ratio is given as 300 cubits long (450 - 510 feet, depending on which historical version of the cubit you accept) and 50 cubits (75 - 85 feet) wide, a ratio of 6:1, not 1.6:1. The Ark of the Covenant (6:51-6:52) *did* use a 1:1.6 ratio in both length-to-breadth and length-to-height, being 2.5 cubits long, 1.5 cubits wide, and 1.5 cubits high (see Exodus 25:10 and Exodus 37:1).
Good point about Noah's ark. I had to look it up. It works using the height rather than the length. The face, if you will, was 50 cu. wide and 30 cu. high. That is 1.6:1. The picture she has in the video is misleading; it is only referring to the draft of the boat. It doesn't have anything to do with the dimensions.

As an artist and art teacher I do impart this to my students, as well as use it in my work... and subtle as it may be it certainly makes things feel "wrong" when I don't employ it in a composition. Most of my students listen to me talk about it but never think about it again, haha, until they question their design results it usually falls to this not being present.
@@cougar2013 Oh?... and your reasoning behind your dubiousness? Have you also doubted the others who have made it known that it broadens and increases the proportional appreciation of their designs?
@@chrismaggio7879 it’s very simple. If I took something that had proportions equal to the golden ratio, and altered them slightly without telling you, you’d never notice the difference. If you’ve somehow convinced yourself that a certain proportion is beautiful, then that’s on you, but there is no scientific evidence tying this particular proportion to “beauty” (which is obviously not a scientific term). So really, the ratio blows your mind and you love it, and that’s awesome, but it has nothing a priori to do with beauty.
@@cougar2013 But the simplicity of beauty in numerous features in the natural world fall on or close to the ratio. These items we have accepted as a standard for what we perceive to be beautiful or attractive. Granted the human mind likes what it likes and some are not either matching the golden mean to their aspect of perfect nor inclined to use the mean to create their art, and that is not a fault or problem. Art is subjective. My point is that when something is not proportional or is intentionally misaligned then it tends to be a minor shock to the perception most people have, and that can be a feature of the art created, as art is supposed to evoke emotion, both in the creator and the viewer. You seem angry about this, and I hope I'm wrong. Left brain vs right brain shouldn't cause anger but instead invoke interest. Cheers!
@@chrismaggio7879 I’m not angry and I apologize if I came off that way. My background is in physics, and all through my PhD process I did a lot of teaching. I have to admit that it is kind of annoying when science topics are presented to the public in misleading ways. I read a book by Mario Livio years ago called “The Golden Ratio” and it was eye opening. He makes a very strong case against what you and I are discussing. He shows that “number juggling” can be used to make pretty much anything look like it has the golden ratio built in. The ratio itself is about self-similarity, which is something we see in nature, but it’s one of countless patterns. In my opinion, it’s great to appreciate the golden ratio for what it is, but it’s almost an insult to Nature to put this one simple number on such a pedestal.

Great video and it gets even better. The golden ratio is not just present in the visual world- it can be used in every aspect of your life including how you speak and move your body. To begin learning about this imagine that you are not walking/ moving through air but, water. Slow gentle starts and slow ends mimics the Fibonacci sequence especially in body movements. Once you get good at this you will find that you induce others into your own state of well being. Pet your cats/ dogs with this in mind- in fact, your cat already understands this and has been trying to teach you with their unique purr and undulating body movements. The perfect hug between two people? Yep, it follows the Fibonacci sequence (up then down) with the big squeeze right in the middle. Once you master this process you will automatically become magnetic to people and animals because they are subconsciously attracted to it without even knowing why. Thank you. Jeffrey Z. in SC
The most trippy thing is this... almost every song I’ve tried, this works with. 9/10 I’d say. Take the length in seconds and multiply it by 0.618. At that point in the song, there likely is a climax, or important notably different portion. They call it a phi moment.
Easily debunked: many songs can be played in different versions with different lengths, so the parts of it actually don't have an exact place. Probably you just consider important parts to be long and likely to fit somewhere just after the half which is logical. Or maybe there is some magical wave that comes to your head when writing a song that forces you to place the most important part to 0.618 😂
Thank you so much for your elegant presentation about the golden spiral. I will show this to my grandchildren when we do our weekly Zoom meeting on creation/science.
And those measurements of your body parts, no way on earth are they accurate to 1:6 , a “very rough guide” maybe, but if it’s not accurate it shouldn’t be mentioned and shown in this way. Maths doesn’t give awards or accolades to approximate maybes
Love your video. My addition of fun facts: 1. The ratio is actually an irrational number (like pi for example). I love the idea that so much, perhaps everything, is based on an irrational number! 2. The two most popular film formats, past and present, are very close to the Golden Ratio: 35mm (still and film) is 1:1.5, which is actually "rational". And 16:9 in video/film, is 1:1.7 (actually irrational). 3. There used to be a quirky band called the Fibonaccis. I won't comment on whether they were rational or irrational. They probably won't either.
Its known as Mrityunjay number. Hindus use it even today in Yantras & architecture of hindu temples. European mathematicians renamed it and stole it. Nothing new, same as fraud of Newton and apple falling from tree.
Granted, I do find this sort of thing fascinating. SOME of it, however, is a bit of a stretch in usage. We see pics of the Golden Spiral superimposed over countless photos that certainly suggest that this ratio is used in a cognoscente manner in everything we see. Yes...the 1:1.6 ratio IS certainly used in designing many things and it most certainly has a grace about it that is pleasing to the eye. However, I think One could just as easily superimpose that spiral over just about ANY image (in one orientation or another) and see the same 'proof'. What DOES strike me curious, however, is how the Fibonacci Sequence (which IS actually a separate entity from the Greek Golden Ratio) shows up in Nature again and again. As she had allured to ...the number(s) of spirals in a pine cone, pineapple, or sunflower seeds (One has to count up ALL of the spirals possible on any given object to see this to be true). The number of petals on a flower, etc. How it is that what is, essentially, one of the most eloquently simplistic mathematical sequences manages to describe the world around us in such a precise fashion is beyond my reckoning.
How so? Nothing is by chance. Life is by design or one does not believe in the creator who is the best of designer ... comprehend what is incomprehensible and you will be a step closer to God this is simple compared to the wonders of the galaxy and annunkai

Is it just me, or is this just like finding images in the clouds? With an infinite samples to choose from, OF COURSE we can find two data points to match any ratio! 1.8, 1.9... I bet we can find those relationships too.
Yeah that's true, also if you draw an asymmetric painting there already is a high chance for it to automatically contain the golden ratio in some way unintentionally. The golden ratio is still special though because there often is a mathematical reason for it to appear. Seeing it as proof of a higher beeing is confirmation bias.

I wonder if you make up any ratio and start looking for it, you'll also find it everywhere. How can we be sure this is not just a case of seeing what you're looking for. Like when you get a new car and start noticing your model on the road. Or like when you obsess over a number and start seeing it everywhere. This video is interesting, but it makes no strong case for me that the golden ration is actually unique.
One more interesting fact: the reason why golden ratio is perfect to us? It is because human eye moves 50 degrees up(20°)-to-down(30°) and 80 degrees left(30°)-to-right (50°) which is 50°:80°. Left to right consideration was for right eye and left will be viceversa. (The angles are approximations)

There’s a great video (probably multiple videos) here on TH-cam that de-mystify the golden ratio. I can’t remember the details but essentially the golden ratio is just the path of least resistance. It’s the most logical way for groups of cells or objects to evolve. Basically it’s just math. That’s what math IS. It’s the language of the universe. There’s nothing mystical or spiritual about it. It exists everywhere because it WORKS. I am not doing the video justice but I encourage everyone to seek out objective explanations instead of videos by people who only scratch the surface. It’s easy to believe this is proof of intelligent design when you don’t look too closely. But when you really dig into this mathematical principle you’ll find that it’s a lot less elegant than it at first seemed. Edit: I found it. It’s called “Golden Ratio: Myth or Math?” by BeSmart.

"This is rather as if you imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in - an interesting hole I find myself in - fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I’m.a graphic designer and I’ve taken the golden spiral and overlaid it on top of many different real life spirals that occur in nature. Not one lines up with the golden spiral. The golden spiral is made up of many different quarter circles and that is not how a natural spiral is done. When I have overlaid them they are immediately off from one another. People are in love with the idea but the idea doesn’t match anything.

Tessa, I thought you would want to know that there is an error in the graphics beginning at 01:31 and continuing for the next 10 seconds. In the number sequence, between the sum of 55 and 144 the sum of 89 is missing. Otherwise, a nice presentation.

God.

Learning never exhausts the Mind. ~ Leonardo Da Vinci
From the Introduction of the book "Liber Abaci" written by Fibannacci himself:
1) "I am the son of an official working in Bugia, Algeria". 2) There was a colony of Indian Merchants in that city. 3) "It was there that I was introduced to Indian Mathematics".
Fibonacci further says- " I loved Indian Mathematics to such an extent above all others that I completely devoted myself to it" "I was also introduced to Greek, Arabic & Egyptian Math" "But I found ALL of them, EVEN Pythagoras, to be erroneous compared to Indian Mathematics"
Fibonacci further says: "For this reason, basing my book COMPLETELY on Indian methods and applying myself with greatest attention to it, but not without adding something of my own thought, I forced myself to compose this book. I demonstrated everything with proof"
Finally, Fibonacci says: " In my book, I have published the doctrine of Mathematics completely according to the Method of Indians. I have COMPLETELY adopted the (Mathematical) Method of Indians because it is the MOST effective"
In his book, Fibonacci does NOT refer to #Fibonacci Series as "Fibonacci Series" Rather, he simply calls it "Indian Series". Unlike many other Europeans, Fibonacci was NOT a plagiarist. He clearly mentioned his source and acknowledged his credit to ancient Indians.

It's not really a big deal, unless you're doing the math yourself - would definitely proof confusing if you were calculating the Golden Ratio using anything above that point. Still interesting information despite this oversight.
Just carry on and the sequence will self-correct itself within a couple of iterations.
This is a dubious claim
1:29 how can 34+55 be equal to 144? See the sequence of Fibonacci in the video at 1:29
She did say maths wasn't her strong point. Someone editing the video probably forgot to include 55+89
@@eamonahern7495 yeah true and therefore the sequence shifted by one index
@@eamonahern7495 Nor probably, actually. 89+55 was accidently omitted.

@@jamesdavis5517 I think you have the same rights and freedoms afforded to all in most countries, that you can have a personal opinion and can publicly express it.

Really cool stat tho. 🙌🙌🙌
I tried this with 4 songs and failed with each, so I gave up
Easily debunked: many songs can be played in different versions with different lengths, so the parts of it actually don't have an exact place.
Probably you just consider important parts to be long and likely to fit somewhere just after the half which is logical. Or maybe there is some magical wave that comes to your head when writing a song that forces you to place the most important part to 0.618 😂
@L0ve & Gratitude He has a hobby. He's just described it. Lol.
Seriously, this is mind blowing stuff.

And those measurements of your body parts, no way on earth are they accurate to 1:6 , a “very rough guide” maybe, but if it’s not accurate it shouldn’t be mentioned and shown in this way. Maths doesn’t give awards or accolades to approximate maybes
I've had the Golden Ratio explained to me dozens of times and this is the only one my smooth brain could understand. Pretty neat!
Love your video.
My addition of fun facts:
1/1.7 is rational. How do I know? Well, it’s the ratio of 1 to 1.7. There is no way to express an irrational number as a ratio.
Its known as Mrityunjay number. Hindus use it even today in Yantras & architecture of hindu temples. European mathematicians renamed it and stole it. Nothing new, same as fraud of Newton and apple falling from tree.
I've been watching Golden Ratio vids on TH-cam. This is the easiest explanation of the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio. Thanks a lot!

Listen to Lateralus by TOOL for an auditory Fibonacci sequence...
Never in my life have I seen anyone so enthused by a particular numeric ratio.
As she had allured to
...the number(s) of spirals in a pine cone, pineapple, or sunflower seeds (One has to count up ALL of the spirals possible on any given object to see this to be true). The number of petals on a flower, etc. How it is that what is, essentially, one of the most eloquently simplistic mathematical sequences manages to describe the world around us in such a precise fashion is beyond my reckoning.
Intelligent Design :)
How so? Nothing is by chance. Life is by design or one does not believe in the creator who is the best of designer ... comprehend what is incomprehensible and you will be a step closer to God this is simple compared to the wonders of the galaxy and annunkai
I've been blocked with my creativity in learning the gimp program where you use a particular tool. I just couldn't get it, until now. Thanks for sharing your experiences and enthusiasm. I truly appreciate this video.
Love how you explained the golden ratio! Perfect for my math students to see the application. And just love how you mentioned how a perfect God created us this way. How wonderful that you incorporated the Biblical and everyday realities of it! Thank you!!!!

I have to write a paper about the Golden Ratio, and I had no clue what it was. This is the best video yet! Thank you so much for helping me understand.
Kudos to your instructor
The ancient Indians knew about the Fibonacci series and the golden ratio even before it was invented by Fibonacci and we have evidences for it in some of the Hindu texts and mantras..can get clear info abt this in Praveen Mohan's Video abt Fibonacci number ....the golden golden ratio is a divine proportion 🙏.....great job sis you have explained it very well
the Ancient Pyramid of Giza is the golden triangle. It was intentionally designed that way.
kepler triangle, actually
This is a great explanation, easy to understand. what is excitement in this video is her excitement to explain the Golden Ratio. It definitely changed my thought on how I can use this Golden Ratio technique to make things better, thank you.

I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for."
Anthropic principal. Things are the way they are because if not they'd be different. It would be very odd to find ourselves in a universe inhospitable to life, maybe then you'd have a point.
