ENGINE REVEAL | Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Engine Swap Part 2

  • In this episode we reveal the new engine and we prepare it to go back into the car.
I realise the voice over sound quality isn't that great and i'll try to improve it in the future.
The engine going into the golf is nothing special like a VR6 or a G60 motor because engine laws in Belgium are pretty strict. Thats why I kept it conservative. But hey, it is still going to be a massive improvement to the 1.5L that was in it before.

Hey man! I really loved the energy, the edit+music, and your passion for cars. Thnx for this video *(really really helpful ). I'm also looking to buy an mk1 cabriolet and also found one without an engine! Now I'm researching to see what I need to do next. Keep it up!!

This engine is a beast in Brasil there are plenty of forged parts for it, this little engine i´ve seen reaching more than 1000hp (brasil racing scene is best known for having this engine doing crazy amounts of horsepower!, my Santana had a 1.8 which was converted into a 1.9 turbo runnign on etanol with forged internals packing more than 400hp!

    Great job indeed.
I'm rewatching the video. It seems odd in a way. Here in North America it used to be everyone thought European Cars were so far advanced compared to domestic cars. Thing is that Mark I Golf's (Rabbits) all had fuel injection by 1980. The one I saw was a 78 and it had both electronic ignition and fuel injection from the factory. Then again, our 81 Volvo 240DL Estate had the 2.1 litre with points ignition and a single side draught carburetor. Canadian market car. In the US, with more stringent emissions standards, fuel injection was standard across the board. Electronic ignition was standard fitment in North American cars by 1974, and had been standard on some as early as 72. It is really interesting seeing the differences in equipment and technology on the same car built for different markets.

Well those Aluminium shards are gonna have some fun when they reach the radiator...
BTW downgrading the carb doesn't reap almost any benefits of a bigger engine. What more you need to jet it so it wont run lean not to mention airflow restriction.

    I have hints for you:
1- the crankshaft pulley, if you removed the central head you are going to have acess to the threads of the allen bolts (i've had the same problem and spraying wd40 there was a easiest solution)
2- usualy there is a little mark of alignment on the distribuitor and in the rotor, if you aling them together it means spark on n1 cilinder

I never saw so many snapped bolts in my life, heat before trying to loosen it (use penetrating oil) and/or use a correctly sized impact gun, I've taken out and put back the engine in my mk1s about 4 times now ( upgrades) and I've yet to snap a bolt, but I give you points on trying to do it yourself

Out of what car is that 2l engine you got there or better what's the engine code? I like to find a similar engine here in the US. Thank you

    Memphis:
Surprised with all the cleaning you did, you did not even bother to fill-up each valve (intake/exhaust) chamber with gasoline to check to see if the valves and seats were 100% sealing.
Simple hand-lapping of valves and seats or a couple hundred bucks to the machine-shop would make a big difference engine power and fuel-economy.
